While I think the article is pretty bullshit and butt-patting it's pretty legit to feel anxious at a larp if you're an anxious person. LARP (ideally, and in a roleplay-heavy game) can open up a lot of situations and scenarios that would never happen in day to day reality.

I am not someone who gets into a lot of conflicts in real life, but I frequently get into them in game (because it's part of the game and conflicts are what makes it fun!). Sadly, I quickly realized that confronting people in game made me feel nauseated to the point of throwing up. Nothing is more embarrassing until that time that you're finally confronting your knight because he murdered people, only go to "Oh, shit, hang on." and fleeing to the bathroom to puke.

KoA is a retailer and distributor. They don't make anything in-house and they carry a VERY wide range of gear. That isn't to say they're bad; on the contrary they've been known to carry good shit every now and then and the majority of their stock is functional at least. You just have to be careful about what you buy from them. If you ever intend on buying anything expensive from KoA, I'd recommend that you familiarize yourself with the brands they carry beforehand.
My first gear for HEMA that wasn't second-hand came from KoA and it lasted me for quite some time.

I have social anxiety and it's helped me be a little more outgoing. Most of the people in my local community have been really nice and really welcoming. I've made a few friends and I've been invited to do social stuff (going out to dinner, going over to peoples houses, etc.) outside of our regular group meetings.

Custom masks (like, I sculpt it, mould it, and cast it, paint it) go for between $80-$140US depending on how complicated they are. If the customer wants silicone rather than latex, it's an extra $30 (I have to special order it) and then things like embedded fur, attached jewelry, gold leaf, etc are an extra $15. Then there is shipping, which depends on where you are from.

I do heavy discounts on bulk orders for local games because they give me nice in game perks for it.

So, here's a weird question that occurred to me. I've seen several videos and the like floating around of larpers using the madu in combat, and I was thinking I'd like to make a pair. Looking around several forums, though, I'm seeing a fair bit of concern about them safety-wise. As long as you're not punching with the shield, and the tips are thrust-legal, it doesn't seem like it would be a problem to me. Have any of you run into this issue? What do you think about the madu's legality as a weapon?

>> No.8523063

>>8523039
These got popular in Amtgard around 2000 or so. Seemed like everyone and their cat was making a fucking madu if their class allowed for one. Never really saw any safety concerns except for inadvertent groin stabs, since you couldn't slash with it anyway. Personally I think they're retarded and humbling madu users always made me smile, but legally I didn't have a leg to stand on to argue against them.

Most of the debate I found was from about 2010/11, and I got the impression that they were a fad weapon at some point, yeah. The main argument against that I saw was essentially "our rules don't allow for something to be both weapon and shield," which seems to me like a silly reason to ban them.

The primary safety concern seems to me like it would be accidentally punching somebody with the shield when you try to slash, which, as you mentioned, is no longer an issue if they're exclusively stab weapons.

>> No.8523272

>>8523039
They were very popular around here for a little while. The central round was usually a lot smaller than your pic because Alliance has a maximum square inch surface area for shields. Never saw any safety worries, but nobody ever tried to thrust with the tips.

the 3 larp thread are ded. sad.

>Retaking my name cuz i'm a fag.

I had a 3 day larp last week, and I'm a bit lost.

I played as NPC. Comming with a friend. And boy I was suprised.
To put it in perspective, it was the 9th, and last larp on their setting. The conclusion, the final chapter. I would have though that people would have wanted to go with a bang, to think "It's the last, I've got nothing to loose !" and all go and try to do dramatic things, to end feud with a bang, to capture hated enemies, make hasty judgment and cinematic executions.

Well, none of that. I've only saw one real battle between PC. They were... so fucking inactive... They disregarded most of the main plot. spent most of the time in the tavern. Did they feared for their char and wanted to have the non existant "I survived" pins ? I saw that some took really bad their death.

I heard that they was a good amount of backstabbing but very few open conflict. Still, the larp feld dead. few pc paying attention to the main scenario, not acting at all on the night attack...

Is this unique, or normal on a Larp ?

We have a main plot. But it's one of twenty things going on at once. And I imagine if the event went belly up for some reason and couldn't be continued in some way (hard to imagine) then we'd have plenty of reminiscing to get through and wouldn't be especially interested in the GM plot either.

I mean no one would actively avoid it. But it would be one of twenty important things going on at once.

But I can understand how a newcomer wouldn't relate to the nostalgia and might instead feel the main plot gets too little attention. LARPs have layers.

Yea, thought so. but as a npc, we waited so long...
Did group up as a legion, we have taken defensive postition in a camp, far away ( shield wall between a wooden camp and the main road, archer on a hill, called for ambassador ( 3 came ), Made stupid boast about their claim, and waited for the storm.
Fluff wise they were united vs the legion.

We were sorta 40 NPC. They were 200 PC

So, nothing. We were dessicating ourselves in the heat in heavy armor for nothing.

So we marched, and began to form a line just facing the plain were the palio ( the center of interest of the larp ) was taking place. Nothing.

What I've heard later was that they were scared as fuck. The emperor and golden guy were orgas. Players knew they were experimented in historical reconstitution, and good at formation.

Not really what I saw, but a reputation is a reputation.

You can find a Bel/Dag/Amtgard group pretty much anywhere there's even a distant chance at a "LARP" being there. As far as the population of US players of what they'll call a LARP goes, they dwarf even the next biggest population (NERO, then Alliance) of players, although there's plenty of under-50-player games scattered around.

"High population" for most non-Bel/Dag/Amtgard LARPs in the USA is around 200 people at a given event. A single event like Ragnarok can often singlehandedly outnumber an entire year's worth of events for most games in the USA, never mind something like a big SCA war event (and Pennsic of course is easily up there in event counts with even the German stuff like Drachenfest/Mythodea).

What's hilarious is getting the same people running around in the woods at night and watching them die horribly from being backshot, chopped below the knee, etc. etc.

SCA fighters can be wonderful meleers and shieldwall types, but the second the rules change, they can end up the most awkward player out there. I was at a game a while back with some really decent guys. Shieldwall, sword-and-board, ate up anything that got in front of them.

They ended up dead to a man because half the NPCs stood in front while the other half just kept running laps around them while pelting them with shortbows.

They got better once they realized that people could and would go around them or hit low, but it was that first wipe to a bunch of goblins that started the whole learning process.

Exactly. 1800 would be a largish regional SCA event, for example. The biggest Dag Ragnarok event (one of the big wars for them) had a gate count of just over 1600.

i dont know, i always tend to bring the ''bang'' everywhere i go in larp anyways.

I remember in a post apo firing my last bullet while injured and just started laughing at an aproaching zombie horde made of npc and converted pc and just fliping them the bird and started laughing like a madman while going.

''Yeah?! well fuck you too ugly motherfuckers!

and continued laughing as i got ''eaten''.
Then i ''respawned'' as a zombie right on the spot and lets just say i really like playing zombies because i just have what is needed to freak people out.

(i used to be deatly afraid of zombies when i was a kid but now i just dont care, so i know what is really really freaky about them and its not screaming and acting like a monster to get quickly killed but its actually to be this presence that is always there and keep harrassing the players.

in the end i got healed and i had no idea a zombie could even get healed wtf, i just went with it.

I do love fest events. They feel like a living breathing world, and the set piece battles are amazing! Monsterous creatures and charging hordes!

Smallest event I do is Animatium which has about 40 players. But has a massive amount of personal player plot and downtime focus. Think Pride and Prejudice meets Sharpe. Last event was in a old boarding school a bit like Hogwarts. Was amazing!

Yea, I don't understand this state of mind either.

But some people got really pissed that their char was killed. Like, this one girl who had her char since the first larp of the series ( so 9 years ) and, when she ended second on the fencing tournament, was unconscious, and had to be healed ( because last duel was with "real" weapon ), and was dragged and finished by his apoticary.

I waited her to join the NPC team, but she just went to sulk for the rest of the larp.

Others were just piss off that theirs death was just "suprise attack at the camp + be beaten+left to die" without any rp.

Another note. Is it me, or are the common larper pretty bad at duel ? Most were okayish in teamplay and line-combat, but what I saw at the fencing duel left me... very un-impressed.

Not only the placement of their weapons, but also the distance between the players, (always too close), and the lack of lateral moves while attacking.
Without judging about the attack themselves. They look bad, but when your weapon is shitty balanced like the cali it's not like you can do much about it.

The only ones who seemed decent were somes weaboos, armed with a yari, a naginata, and a nodachi. May have done kendo before, but I don't know what it look like, so can't say.

Still, good footwork, moved with each attack, and really had their weapon in a position that protected them. shame for them that they had no hilt.

After experience, with matching training, a good 2h sword will beat reliably any 2h lance. Larp lance, dunno about boffer.
Can aim and hit their hand without risking mine, can block a blow, and just slide/push the thing while keeping them from do anything nasty, and in general can be more offensive without risking as much as the lance guy.

I can remember a case where at a LARP, Team Evil basically rolled everyone else courtesy of getting Plot to allow them to summon a major demon. Goodie-twoshoes, neutrals, didn't matter. Blood for the blood god, skulls for the skull throne. The only ones that actually lived through it were in the Healer's Guild, by sheer good fortune and protective magic circle.

The resulting backlash at Plot resulted in the entire Team Evil leaving, the Plot team getting off the game entirely, and anyone going full Evil becoming a Plot NPC for the new people running things.

On the other hand, they ended up starting with another game and that's part of what made Knight Realms, so silver linings all round.

Also, fuck, a bunch of strangers from different nationality, with different stuffs, culture and shits, working together in a glorious fucking adventure, isn't that one of the biggest thrope of larp, and p&p ?
Wouldn't that be really nice to do this, but with real strangers this time ?

about this, the one thing I learned in the LKL that as long as everyone gets the idea the language isn't THAT important in combat.
I mean we did a lot of formation drills during the game and it went pretty well if you realize that there was one whole rotte that didn't spoke german (I was there with 5 estonians) and even the germans had sometimes difficulty to understand each other as they spoke different dialects. I mean there were some german germans, some germans from switzerland who spoke some kind of half german half french language and there were guys from southern tirol who are basically italian germans. The list goes on.
But during the battles and the formations we didn't had too much trouble, if the most part of the people there now what to do the rest can just simply follow

>> No.8545271

>>8545253
Come on now. Südtiroler are really easy to understand. Austria has much more challenging dialects.

And you got the impression that Schwizerdütsch sounds French? I'm German, and I'm a little insulted. But I imagine it will be much worse with the Swiss, or the French. Try not calling the Swiss Germans, they really do not appreciate that.

I think Schwizerdütsch has a very dynamic melodic structure, while French has a dramatic melodic arc.

Anyway, sounds like a great camp. What was the lingua franca? English?

This is not true.

For one linguists across the world keep reinterpreting relics and adjusting the meaning of words. It changed quite a lot for some words over the ages and regions of the empire.

And the Vatican very much uses Latin as a living language, inventing words for airport or nuclear reactor, space station, or Internet all the time.

Drachenwald is centered in Germany and is one of the largest SCA kingdoms.

Maybe I can help answer your questions, Anon? Most people who say shit about the SCA are bitter former (by social shunning for being a dick, or just asspained by certain people) SCA members, who set up their own groups (Amtgard, Dagohir, Adrian Empire, Empire for Medieval pursuits etc were all founded by former SCA) and would tell folks who passed on second hand rumors.

Now, many people crossgame and don't let the shit get to them.

> Why not try talking to one of us?
Haven't found a single one of those in my area. SCA is non existant in France. Not even a website, the wikipedia page is barebone. they don't exist. thus the "do they exist in yurop ?"

And nearly all others org that know their existance talk shit about them. Histofag, hema fag, larpfag. For differents and sometime opposed reasons.
The english wikipedia page don't help, pict related is the illustration. Look at this fucking photo. They didn't even removed the sticker from the helmet, and it look more like bloodbowl than anything medieval themed with that helmet.
Why is that the image they choosed to use for their description, if you have some armor like on your pic ?

>Say wut? You don't have to pretend to like anyone

My personal blacksmith has stumbled on their forum, looking for some template, and found some "historical" with welding only doable with a blowtorch. After he had corrected some broscience on another thread about metal resistance, he got banned because the broscience emanated from an admin/officier. The rest of the forum seemed to be bathed in "praise everything that the officier say".

Cue the deepthroating conclusion. Just browsing the rules, hierarchy seem to be powerful. giving power to the guy who win the tournament seem also a big way to invite all the bad sport practice. Depend if everyone is people are all Serious business.

Heard that you begin as a squire, have to serve a knight, and that for that he could get training from him to be knighted.

Blacksmith concluded that you can repay the guy that do you chores by beating him up, and that this organisation was taillor made for him and that he wanna join.

he can't source this shit, other than "sca forum"

so, no direct source, hence the "if half of this shit is real"

>Ork monarchy

Fighting to get your crown is normal, yes, but I would prefer to get a leader based on personal charisma, reputation and lawfulness. If he has to be the leader of the group, and the arbitrer of the rules on his org, taking the winner of a tournament may not be the best way to get the best people on this job.

It look like people with grade In character also have authority out of character, like for things like checking weapon and armor validity.

Seem weird for me if the arbitrer are involved in the game. DMPC in p&p, or Orga with permanent roles in larp seem to be a recipe for abuses. And srs bsn about the role rather than be laid back. In short, assholess.

But maybe i read wrong, and peer like marchall and shit are not in game role, but orga.

depends. Nowdays there are larps when I just bring some of my older costumes. If we doesn't count the price of those stuff becasue I already had them then we can say there are larps where I spend more on transportion.

Yes, it's second hand. Because they don't fucking exist in my country, so I can only have second hand opinion about them, and every singles of them ( exept for their DIY skill, and household items ) are bad.

This is why I writed on my first post about them" if half of that is true", "Can't be sure because..."

But now that I have a real one at hand, I write all those second hand thingy and ask what of it is true.

I think the core of the question, about their reputation is what >>8549438 said.

What is their position about what they do ?

A big part of SCA people seem to really want to distance themselve from the LARP, hence their "pretentious asshats" reputation who disregard the larper and his foam weapon ( somes reflex blow on the head by crossgamer didn't help, I guess. ) .
Another argument that seem to be throw arround a lot when differencing with larp is "they try to be accurate". hence next thing.

Some among them believe they are a historical re-enactment group. They are seen by the common public as such, and even have "educationnal statut". If this is their official position, "true" reenactor can shit on them for inaccuracy.

Also heard somes brag about it was a martial art or sport, and that they recreates the fighting styles used in the middle ages. But it is no Hema or Behourd, and so they get shit on by them.

So, the question is. What is the official position on that ? what are they, officially trying to do ?

The truth is, the whole "historical re-enactment" bit is more for tax purposes than anything else. There are people who do SCA and indeed work up a persona, try to be super historically accurate, etc. etc.

There are SCAdians that just like hitting bros in armor with sticks.

There are SCAdians who barely dress for the occasion but like the social aspects, hanging out to drink mead, listen to songs, and maybe some light shopping at the merchant's alley like it was a games convention.

The reason the SCA has trial-by-tournament rulers is literally so it CAN'T be too serious. Sadly, there are always No Fun Allowed types that fuck this up, and that's why there's plenty of SCAdian splitoffs.

Okay consider my jimmies rustled.

First off what forum are you talking about, as far as I know there is no official sca forum.

So I'm not sure what power you think the King and Queen (crown) has? While it's true that they can change laws, kick members out ect. It has been my impression that sort of power is very very sparingly used.

Mostly the Crown sets the example for the "game", gives events an additional ceremonial and regal touch, and gives out awards. It's considered a time consuming and often tiring job. For example my kingdom; The East Kingdom covers Delaware, eastern Pennsylvania and New York, the New England states and eastern Canada. Royalty must travel all over the kingdom attending events.

Also the reign is only half a year long. If someone decided to be despotic, then it's likely that they would be shunned and considered bad sports, basically blacklisted. Totally not worth it.

In terms of considering ourselves better then larpers, that is something I have never heard before. The SCA started before larping, and we are just something different. I don't see the deal

So yeah historical accuracy. We aren't a reenactment group that checks to see whether the thread count of your linen is accurate. Accuracy and research is encouraged and rewarded. For instance if you want to enter something in an arts and sciences competition you need write of documentation of your research and sources. Sca members have done mountains of historical research; and also actually do try out theories. You think that viking dresses were constructed a particular way? Make that shit, write papers/websites about it, show how you are right! You think that person is wrong? Make your shit and show how it makes more sense!

>> No.8550468

>>8550464
That is another thing, it's not primarily a battle game. While many members are very focused on the martial aspect of it, it's a small fraction of what is done and researched.

So yeah congrats on the prime bait, got me out of larpthread hibernation.

One of the things that does frustraite me about the sca is the fact that all the research the members do can be hard to find but here are two example I like.

That seem to be the problem. no official forum, so anyone seem as legit as another.

And about that. For sca and larp relation, just type "SCA LARP" on google.
no "vs", no "better", just that.

The first result, from "utrama-imperium" don't really need commentary.

On the second, a video of a SCA guy, who explain that for him light fighting is the most realistic form of battlefield fighting there is, and then taunt Larping with their mage with beanbag of doom.

Disregarding any not D&D fat friendly larp, while considering SCA the "most realistic" thus disregarding any reenacting done without football helmet and with steel sword. or sport like bohurt
This rustle my jimmies.

The commentary seem to have the same idea.
"When someone asks me "do you LARP?" I say "God no!" for one reason, I do not wish to associate my attempt at historical re-enactment fighting with face painted LARPing crazies..."
Well, youtube commentary. But you see that's the popular idea. It's not "SCA is different", it's "Larp is for fattass".

But yes, the people who do both seem to have more moderate opinion on it, like the third result.

But the others are just more than enought to create the "What an elitist douchebag" impression.

The not-battle thing isn't as discuted and don't seem to have this reputation. In fact very few others organisation try to recreate all aspect of life.

So yes, of course a whole organisation can't be made of asshole, and can have very wide rechearch and works, but... you know what make more noise.

On the research matter, are they not more on the "not fighting" part ?

Last weekend I was part of the crew for a 40k Rogue Trader larp.

Highlights include:
Setting up a pitch black room, only illumination is a couple of glow sticks. Meant to be horrible psychic visions. Get one member of crew to dress as his dead PC, crucified to a wall. Me and another crew wear hooded robes, latex demon masks, tied red glosticks behind our ears so it looks like disembodied heads in the dark.
Players enter and the door slams shut behind them. Dead PC guy starts singing his old war song as the two demons come out of the dark corners cackling. Players shit themselves and start banging on the door to get out. Guys on the outside frantically trying to unjam the door to the sounds of screaming and fists pounding on the other side. That room on the site now dubbed Terror Room.

Oh and playing a false vision of Malcador taunting the players as they navigate a tesseract labyrinth in the dark while being slowly stalked by a C'tan shard.

*clothing of a suitable nature as to resist cuts and tears
*A punch-test passing layer around the entire torso (spectra, fencing jacket, heavy wool, leather, kevlar etc)
*100% coverage of skin with no exposure durring movement.
*Groin protection
*A heavy/three weapon fencing mask (preferenced for perf plate visored helms)

Most of all, they must pass the Society's and their kingdom's combat authorization.

Esh Just finished these for a guy in a fantasy LARP, and who is also apparently taking them to Burning man here in the US.

Different from her normal bracers of light, these are made from real leather.

Pretty much this.

So Sadly not really lightsaber-able to scale using crystals. Resign rods, or plastic rods yes.

Funny thing is we saw 'murikans bath in the river and shiver in the same week.

But yeah, what a californian would consider normal is what a canadian would consider a good temperature to pass out.

Just as a normal temperature in winter here is considered as being the second ice age by a californian.

So I'm going to some local LARP as a 'poor' fighter, like a dude from the slums. However I'm in the frontline fighter group of the thing.
What sort of armour should I use?

Camp moms are best moms. Unless they are your real mom. Then it can get weird when people hit on her right in front of you.

Still, my mom has kept me fed, alive and armoured...

What kind of florintine? Why the fuck would a frontline fighter handicap themselves like that?

Either go sword+dagger/buckler as a common street duelist/muscle for hire, or get a shield.

she brougth her kids , both around 10yo, i was not comfortable at first but they ended up being really nice kids with a quick wit and a very compatible humour, plus, since we are the Mangy dogs , we can call them the little Son of a bitch and they like it.

>Holy crap, is that really her parrot?
Nope its another dude parrot , the photo is still pretty nice, one of my favorite.

No, I mean my mom is actually the matriarch of my household. She's Mama Scungilli and her word is law. Pic related.

So I've been assembling a viking kit for TRF this year and it's the first time I've ever attempted to make a costume. I gotta say man... I should have just bought the damn costume instead of making it. I probably could have saved a lot of damn money...

On that note, does anyone here do metal work? I'm looking for a tool with which to make this pattern

Would join if they were parisian.

Also, I'm a bit at a loss here. I got a star wars larp soon, theme is a sith academy on Kesh, a planet where a lone sith ship crashed long ago, seen as god by local pop, ect.

Game should be a GoT-like with 4 clans of sith disputing powers and reputation.

And the orga just updated their rules and player list. and the thing is.. a quarter of the players are hight level sith, with insanely OP power. others class are shit, compared to. Nearly unfuckable in frontal combat, and RP say "they rules, you suck theirs dicks"
Asked Orgas about that, they said "yes it's totaly unbalanced, and it's meant to be", offered refund if i'm not happy with that.

I'm playing a grunt of the guard. they are 18 hight level sith, 12 guards, 16 initiates sith, and 12 aliens, which have even lower statut than standart human.

I'm asking myself if I should take their refund offer. Can a game be fun if a quarter of the players are just totaly op ?

I'm guessing the orgs expect the other three to work together long enough to take out the "big guys", predicting somewhere along the line one of the other three factions will then backstab the other two in traditional Dark Side fashion.

It's actually pretty realistic in terms of how the Sith Empire worked. You had a dominant group and the others kissed their ass on the outside while attempting to bring the whole thing down without being crushed.

Be visibly useful. Stab the dominant clan in the back at any opportunity that you can either pin it on a rival or at least not be caught on your own.

Padded jack, a shield, maybe a metal skullcap or the like. Slummers don't really have or need "real" armor, being as most of what you're fighting in there is thugs with clubs and knives vs. serious weaponry.

seem good. after looking at the roster, the dominant group, the one with the ruling emperor, is the weakest. so it's gonna be hard to rule, if discension happen in the family, and even more to have a common front against the common folk.
