I feel like apart from wearing lolita, they don't really do anything interesting. They're not really amazing at singing or dancing and honestly I think their coords aren't that great. They kind of have a "babby's first coord" vibe. I feel like lolita is just their gimmick and without it they would be just another generic idol group. They don't really. Idols have a very, very strict set of rules regarding what they can and can't do, unlike any old musician. Surely you heard about the AKB member who shaved her head in a video apologising for meeting with her boyfriend (and she was very much an adult at this stage afaik) but she was still kicked from the group.

My favourite one is the one in purple ( I know they posted an introduction video but it was in Japanese with no subtitles) I think she has a lovely voice and a great stage presence but the thing I love most about her is she's clearly not a dancer. You can tell she's thinking her way through the routines trying to keep her place and really has to concentrate I'm like that so I guess I relate to her best? I don't want to say that on their youtube channel though because I'm scared their manager or someone will read it and take it the wrong way,

Yeah, they have pretty shitty lives. What's awful is that because they pick girls up pretty young, the promise of adoring fans so long as you pretty much forfeit a social life seems fine. 17, 18 rolls around, and they realise that they're fucked. They can't afford to gain weight, let themselves go, get out of shape, or do most of the things that people their age normally do. The idols that stay in groups until they're 20+ aren't even allowed to have boyfriends or act in a way that would tarnish their pure image. It's awful.

I saw Meltia live. I don't know, I'm already an idol fan so I guess my standards are pretty low?

I really liked it anyways. They're not great at performing even for idol standards, but they also have much lower production values. Groups like AKB are better yeah (even when they were indies), because they had the backing of Akimoto Yasushi who is really well known in the Japanese entertainment industry. Given proper training, I think Meltia would be much better.

I met Nadeshiko and Mero. Mero asked me what brand dress I was wearing and I said Emikyu, but she didn't have a reaction like she knew what I was talking about. (It could also be my poor Japanese). But I won't fault them for it, not like Babymetal liked metal before.

I think they do have their own niche even in idol world in terms of music in addition to the outfits. It's really cute and whimsical. There's not a lot of other girl groups in the market like that at the moment. A lot of them are following the Kpop trend and doing EDM music.

I'm pretty sure Meltia is just a part time gig for them considering how indies they are. So I don't think their life is as suffering as Girl's Generation or something. Not all idols are created equal.

/jp/ here, Nadeshiko is my waifu. Would hold hands with her again.

I don't into dresses and all that other stuff, but they are one of the more fresh things to hit the idol circuit. Their music does stand out a lot too, so it's not just the outfit gimmick.

Last but not least, you can't see this in the videos, but their live events are some of the comfiest ones I've been to. It's almost like a picnic where everyone gets to hang out and have a good time afterwards.

Seconding these guys. The lives/performances are super comfy and there is a pretty even ratio of male:female fans. Many of them aren't very pricey; the one I attended was a fee of buying something at the cafe. I wore lolita and got a coupon for a free picture (otherwise they cost about 1000 yen I believe. Pictures come with handshake/hug and signature).

But your main point here is that it's sad they can't let themselves go". First of all, 17 year olds don't "let themselves go" and gain a shitton of weight, 30 year olds do. What's more sad is the lack of education these girls get and therefore, once they "age out" of the idol group, unless they were very popular, their career choices are very very limited. Saying that it sucks that they can't gain weight completely trivializes the legitimate struggles that many idols have, like not being allowed contact with the opposite sex.

Now that I'm watching their lives, Aira is my favorite. Her dancing is super smooth and her voice is pretty, and she's professional to the point where she's very comfortable on stage and can smile/look cute and interact with the audience without worrying she'll mess up. Ruru is also adorable though, as is Nadeshiko~

Small steps. Babymetal also started small and low-budget, despite being a part of a major idol group (Sakura Gakuin) backed by an even bigger agency (Amuse).

Meltia is doing the smart thing catering to the West from the get go with English subs on their videos and other stuff. And they seem to be going strong enough in Japan, doing their solo lives and appearing at festivals.

One thing I don't get is where do they get the funding from, but unless they decide to pull the plug overnight, I don't think they're going away.

I really liked the straightforwardness and apparent sincerity of this, it's quite refreshing. Having a female producer also helps to take their image away from the slightly creepier aspects of certain moe type idol groups with largely male fans.

I can see this group appealing to men, women and younger people as well. I just hope they don't get encouraged to promote the whole 'pure maiden' aspect too much later down the line.

True, it's mostly just that watching that one short docu where journalists followed around AKB's Acchan was the first time it hit me how bad some of these girls have it. She wasn't even treated that badly so to say but god that girl was depressed. And after delving into learning about the less then savory parts of the idol world it just feels refreshing to see something like this.

Oh lol, Hellopro and AKB are worlds apart in this respect. AKB is basically a sleaze factory compared to all other (mainstream) idol acts.

I really wonder what Meltia's game is. They seem to perform every couple of weeks at joint lives, they have their one-man lives every couple of months, they release new songs on youtube, although with bad audience cheering mixed in.

What I'd really like to see is some kind of progress towards being a more established music act - a music video, even a least effort one, but something to differentiate from a live performance recording, a single for purchase, even a digital only one if that's absolutely the only option.

It sucks enough being stuck away from Japan and not being able to see their lives, but then not being able to tangibly support them from abroad makes it a torture.

For example one that recently graduated owns a restaurant and I believe another girl owns a nail salon plus a few other businesses. It really depends on both the individual as well as the forces behind them (agency, parents). Some end up with low key careers in entertainment (newscasters etc.), some follow their older sister's footsteps and become porn actresses, and some just fall off the face of the media, presumably to lead a boring career or marry the first lucky guy and become a housewife.

At least there seems to be more emphasis now on their overall well-being and education that there was even 10 years ago. But even with the most caring agency and parents there isn't much they can do if the girl is a delinquent and drops out of schools as soon as she finishes the compulsory education.
