Very few people, it was around the size of Brocon, no chairs to sit down, the con was very quiet, less traders than any year before, one of their guests could barely speak English, the old school Eirtacon formula didn't work for Nom, also being right after Brocon and Arcade Con and just before DCC and MCM really hurt them. This might be the last or second last Nom Con.

It was alright, but some of the panels were so empty, I would often walk by the screening room and it was often packed. I don't understand why people go to a convention just to watch more anime, when they can do that anywhere else.

On the Spot was probably the best panel I've been to in a long time.

Banned from DCC. Generally, a google search for Dublin Comic Con will spit a lot of MCM-sponsored search crap. Including nearly every 'Dublin Comic Con' domain.

MCM is just corporate generic con product. It's not even a con - it's a bootleg tradehall.

Say what you want about the 'lesser' cons, but at least they're being run by genuine fans who are making an honest attempt to put on a decent event, where the sole purpose is for the event itself to keep the aspidistra flying.

So. Was at NomCon this weekend and felt like saying my piece on it.
The trade hall was awful. It felt empty nearly all weekend and they let in that mental bootlegger Magicians Merch and the over priced game seller. There was nothing at all that caught my interest other than the top stall with the figures.
The timetable was so boring, Which i was highly disappointed in. Nom always had hentai panels and fun late night events but this year they had pretty much nothing. The events during the day were dull bar the Lolita panel which was actually really enjoyable. The guest panels weren't all that amazing either although the guest herself was nice. The whole con felt empty and very underwhelming for a con that has been running as long as it has. I can't believe i'd say this but last year was far better even with the leaks.

The guest announcements at the closing ceremony were good, Michelle Ruff will be at Eirtakon and Kaizuko con basically got robot wars with shitty robots which looks pretty fun.
however, Akumakon announced a guest and it was really awkward because there was pretty much silence. It was highly shocking but everything was on time this year so there were no super long waits.

But the best thing of all, was NO WESTY VIDEO!

>> No.8528984

>>8528819
I don't really watch much dubbed anime but I'm excited for Michelle cause she's Yoko Littner and Yuki Nagato and they were some of the first anime I watched dubbed a few years ago. She's also in the latest Sword Art Online but I've only seen the sub of that. It's cool that Akuma have a Japanese guest again but like I've no idea who the dude is? He doesn't seem to have done anything major?

Nom was really quiet but it was okay. They could've done with some places for people to sit and just hang out since that's what a lot of people do at cons. There were so many people just sitting on the floor everywhere. The games room was fun, nothing outstanding but well run all the same. I felt like the timetable for the event was budgeted a bit imbalanced... like, the cosplay masquerade finished nearly an hour and a half ahead of schedule so that room was just empty then, but a guest signing later was over running by well over half an hour? Just seemed like they'd given too much time in some places and not enough in others which I would expect with a new con but Nom should know better by now.

I thought the Trade Hall was alright. Not amazing but not terrible. Pity about that trader's anime stuff not arriving though, must be a pain.

I won one of their shirts in a raffle at Pokécon this year and I was so upset because not only was it stolen artwork (those Eevee valentines), it was absolutely awful, awful quality. The print was off-colour, cracked, there were huge portions missing, it was a mess.
I'd question how they thought it was okay to donate a real dud like that to a charity raffle, but then again, yer man has lied to my face claiming to do all the art in that folder himself, so I guess I'm not really surprised.

Really? What a liar! All their "work" is straight off google and DeviantART
It is shocking they claim blatant art theft as their own work. How they get into any trade hall is madness at this point. It is really bad and will make conventions look bad if they are allowed to continue on selling stuff like that. It brings down the whole feeling of a con when that sort of thing is let slide.

As someone pointed out on the other thread, Most conventions do not charge Artists entry. If they do is it a lot less than an attendee ticket. Leigh was an Artist at NomCon so she is asking for a refund on either a reduced ticket or no ticket at all!

While i agree the convention was one of it's worst years, Asking for a refund when you paid less than an attendee ticket or Free is utterly retarded.

>> No.8529084

>>8528819
In fairness, one of the main traders got fucked over by a courier not delivering their stuff so there was a lot less there than there should've been. Sub City is also good for throwing up the odd interesting thing if you're willing to look through the boxen. Dublin City Comics overdid it on the Gundams.... they could've brought more variety.

I found it a bit sterile in places this year. Most of the panels weren't to my interest, but the ones that were were entertaining. A good selection of showings was also on offer.

It seems like, in some places, the administration allowed for leeways for the usual nom-con scheduling issues, and they just never happened.

I liked the lack of overcrowding. Much over 900-1000 starts getting uncomfortable quickly.

I've been fairly bored with cons in general these days. The only reason I enjoyed Kaizokukon so much is not necessarily because of the con itself because it's also a weekend away with a lot less restrictions than getting home in dublin so there's less fluff and worry about getting home. It's easier to stay at the centre of things for the late night panels.

>>8529003
PR was about the only thing they seemed to lack., inspite of the more professional branding and image. Their website had content like a podcast and everything on it, but nobody really heard about it. The con had very little mind-share.

I just checked out their petition and I nearly fell off my seat laughing. What the fuck like? They've obviously been refused a spot in Eirtakon's trade hall and somehow they think that if they get a bunch of signatures they'll somehow let them in? How about making promises not to use stolen art or sell bootlegged material instead?? Fucks sake like.

I'm fucking delighted someone turned them down, the more cons who let them in the more they think what they're doing is ok and don't see any reason to change. Hopefully Eirtakon gets some proper trader in their place.

Magician's Merch really frustrate me, and I hope they don't get into Eirta. When I was talking to yer man I pointed out a few different things from the folder, completely playing dumb. First, I pointed out the Skyrim Charizard, he said he designed it himself, then, a completely different design, funnily enough the Eevee valentine, and he said he'd also designed that. Still playing dumb, I said that I'd seen it on the internet before, passed around tumblr, and on deviantart. He said, bold as brass, that he shares his stuff online a lot.

I was also staff this year at Nom, numbers were around 500 from what I saw (may be a little more) but I know there was about 200 pre reg.

The traders hall was a joke and I knew it would be from the moment I saw the bootlegger, he threw so many hissy fits I just wanted to chuck him out myself, as for the artist who wanted a refund I can't really blame her for wanting some form of compensation, they closed the traders alley hours before it was due to close losing out on the usual last minute sales (which for her at most cons doubles her income I heard her say) and no one knew it was closing.

All in all seeing it first hand there is a LOT of backstage issues that need sorting and they have to get a real advertiser as this year was so bad.

I only really want to go out to meet up with a few friends & enjoy a day out, which I likely won't get easy at an Irish expo, a place where they can't even plan a few tables for card games. 30 quid into some building is not worth it, the friends are.

>> No.8529940

All this stuff about poor attendance really makes me think it'd be better if all the cons in Ireland teamed up to have one huge con so people wouldn't have to be picking and choosing all the time. I mean, Ireland's only the size of a lot of American states, most of which only seem to have one or two real cons. I'd rather go to one con a year with a fucking rake of people at it than 4 or 5 in a year with 500-ish people at each. Probably too many big egos on each con committee to make something like that work, though.

The death of Arcade might have paved the way for Nom Con to do better next year (since that's one competitor down) but I wonder is it too late? Will they even have enough cash to run next year? Even if they do, they won't have made much profit so it'll be very difficult for them to up their game. You need cash to expand and without it they won't be doing anything spectacular... it kinda sucks really cause I want the cons to do better and to give me more stuff for my cash. Nom seems to have stagnated and even declined though - have they ever topped their first year numbers? Seems like they've only dropped every year or remained the same.

>> No.8531363

>>8531113
I think it would a big loss tbh if nom went down.

A new con could maybe come along for the summer but it'd be starting from scratch whereas nom already has the equipment and some following to take off from and I think we need 1 good summer con. Eirta has Nov, then Akuma in Jan and Koizoku in Mar.

It just needs an active committee willing to make it happen. This year I don't know what happened. As someone said last year was much better and was probably their best in years even with the leaks and weather. But still even when that happened I remember coming in on the Sunday and it was all organised with no fuss despite losing a whole section of rooms. They had signs up everywhere. Also last year they had more events, more traders, and the website was better. These aren't things that cost more them money to improve just more effort from the committee. It wasn't a terrible weekend in the end as it did run smoothly aside from the trade hall closing times being wrong but it was disappointing.

They also need to advertise more at other cons.

>> No.8531381

>>8531363

Have any of ye brought something to sell at Eirtakon before? I know they opened it up to regular con-goers so they could just bring anything they wanted to sell with the con taking a cut. Anyone had any experience with it? Wouldn't mind taking some of my limited edition vidya to sell.

Yeah look on the website for bring and buy sheet, fill it out, label your stuff and then just hand it over to them and it'll probably sell if price is good and items of interest. Con takes 10% commission only on items sold. Several cons use the same method and it works well.

When that happens, neither weeb nor mucksavage will be safe, nor will they be spared.

RALLY SOON

I'm at DCC right now and got to same am pretty disappointed. The place is black but there's no structure to it there's queues everywhere no one seems to know anything thats going on, the volunteers are rubbish and aren't too friendly and the amount of young children and infants just hanging about is ridiculous.

Like I queued up for the michael rooker panel 40 minutes early and didn't get in, the panel rooms are a joke they're so small.

And to top it all off someone robbed my wallet and the security couldn't give a toss.

This is what I feared. Are any of the stalls any good at least or is it just comicbook shop stalls and a few random stalls that look out of place at a comic con?

>> No.8540272

What I was talking about was erasure of the history of Pride, which is actually a huge thing at the moment with the Stonewall movie coming out. Just the other day the guy I was arguing with actually completely unironically promoted the movie on the CGP wall, a couple of queer activists engaged him after I was blocked for linking to a counter narrative and he was patronising as fuck. He's basically like an even more annoying, elitist version of Declan anyway.

So whether you agree with me or not, don't pretend I'm a lone crazy on this as trans activists in general are pretty united on this. I also have a bunch of other orgs behind me on this, Anti Racism Network and Sex Workers Alliance Ireland, since i was also talking about erasure of sex workers & people of colour. If EmuFields are having a laugh on this, then it bullshits any (laughable) claims they don't have something against the trans community. Just about anything I do is going to be spun into something negative anyway.

People need to butt out of politics they don't understand. Butting out of stuff would probably make the con scene a lot more bearable too, but this is /cgl/.

DCC has a bunch of people put there flogging this event to the masses like it's gold. Sadly seems to have paid off for them.

Seriously why would anyone suffer and pay so much just for a few seconds with a special guest. You really have to be huge fans of these guests.

I booked for a photo with michael rooker and I literally only got 2 seconds with him I was shocked.
