Using a wheelchair for cosplay, is it bad?
I want to cosplay a character who uses a wheelchair but I worry that it would be offensive to use one for cosplay. I want to keep accurate to the character though.

I agree with this
Especially if you're walking from your hotel to the comm

There was a girl at a recent comm who was dressed as Ariel with a mermaid tail and she was in a red wagon and everyone was always bumping into it and were getting their toes ran over by it

From someone who was in a wheelchair and went to a couple cons, I'd err on the side of no. Not because it's offensive, but because it's a huge hassle believe me. Hard to navigate halls, being late to panels because the wheelchair access areas are in BME, ect. Also, I admit I'm a little bitter because the more people who can walk fine using wheelchairs for characters the less people who actually need them are taken seriously. For every ten nice people who cleared the way for me and opened doors, there were jerks who acted like I was blocking the hallway space/area in front of the dealers on purpose, people telling me to stand up so they could hug me, asking to sit down on me since they're tied of standing (wtf?) ect.
I have a lot of horror moments from those two cons too, like someone trying to wheel me away as a joke (wasn't funny), someone who saw me trying to reach for the last of something in the dealers room rushing over to grab it for himself and buy it before I could make my way through the crowded space to the seller, being stuck behind six other wheelchairs in this badly placed teeeny wheelchair access area for a show only for the first three to literally stand up and wheel their chairs away afterwards, having someone grab the chair on either side, lean down, and say they've always had a thing for 'crippled lolis', and more but I've already turned this into a stupidly long rant.

Er, I guess do what you want, just don't block access for those of us who actually need it. It's less hassle to just just bring a towel or something to sit on for pictures, and you'd be less likely to get the stink eye from people made bitter like me.

I don't understand this, if someone is enough of an asshole to think talking to someone that way is okay, and also had an obscure fetish, you'd think that they would have the intelligence to at least try to treat you like a human being for a maximum chance of getting into your pants.
Still, I guess it's for the best that most horribly rude people are obvious to spot. Sorry you had to deal with that.

The general consensus around Tavros cosplayers was always that 1) don't take up resources that could have gone to someone who actually needed them (such as "borrowing" wheelchairs from the con center etc) and 2) don't actually pretend like you ARE disabled, as this only harms people with actual disabilities who aren't taken seriously.
With that said, it's still a dumb idea at a crowded con, and people ARE going to give you the stink eye when you get into the elevator with a wheelchair you don't actually need.

I say no, for one that character is not disabled and is not dependent on a wheelchair to get around. Secondly I agree with with other anons, wheelchairs at a con are a hassle and people with actually disabilities get shit on enough. The last thing they need is people rolling around in wheelchairs because of cosplay. It makes it worse that the character you're referencing isn't bound to the wheelchair and can actually walk so there's no need for you to even use one for the cosplay.

OP just said for cosplay, not for cons.

I hate going to cons with a wheelchair, more so because I don't use one all of the time, only when my knees are stiff and painful and walking is agony.
I see the looks on peoples faces when they see me walking while I was in a wheelchair the day before and it sucks.

People will treat you like shit and you wont be able to actually manoeuvre around the con very well.

I only cringe at mermaids in wheelchairs (esp Free) because they're just being crowded assholes who couldnt bother to make a walkable tail, or slip one on and off in the appropriate place - which is NOT the dirty con floor. Pics of girls dressed as mermen laying on the floor are disgusting.

I wouldn't be bothered by OP's character because its accurate, not tumblrina mermaid.

Oh yes, the butt view, I'd forgotten. It was really horrifying around the Rave day. So many gross jiggly halfbootys in your face, and the thick rank smell of people at that level is way worse.

>>8532981
Yeah, I started having to use a wheelchair very suddenly right before one con I'd already paid for, and went assuming it wouldn't be to bad. It was, and I'm very glad I should be able to go without one for the next con I go to in a few months.

>>8533009
90% of the people were very nice. Almost unbearably so, but in a way you know they meant well. Except in the dealers room, where people were really rude all around, most people would clear the way for me and open doors. It's just that the other 10% didn't even seem to think I was human? Asking to sit on me, asking to put their bag in my lap in line, and stuff like that. That guy was the absolute worst though. I was actually really scared, and I'm glad I had someone there to scare him off. I don't know how he thought that tactic would work. He seemed like he wanted to scare me, so maybe that's also his fetish.

I'm also still mad about the dude who grabbed the last item I was clearly trying to reach myself. Goodbye adorable ram plush, we could have had so much.

>>8532763
Another thing to consider is transport. Which floor is your room? You won't be able to catch the elevator in most cons now. Do you want to lug it up and down flights of stairs? If you ask for a wheelchair access room on the first floor I will have to cut you, I'm sorry. I mean, I'm still saying you can use a wheelchair, just don't take away from those that can't choose. Also that you really will find it more hassle than anything else.

Just another case of people being offended for the sake of others, while those others are fine with it. But they have to talk over us for justice, right? Seems like most of us who have been or are in wheelchairs in this thread are fine with it, as long as she doesn't take resources from those who actually need it. Many people who use wheelchairs can walk at least for a while, so it's not like most people would honestly know the difference. I'm in one and painfully took the short flight of stairs in the con I went to (around six steps) rather than go a thousand miles around the floor to the access ramp. People were still kind and offered to help/brought my chair down them for me.

Look, if you're going to a big con, ditch the fucking wheelchair since you don't actually need it obviously, it's not even a matter of offensiveness at this point, it's a big safety hazard if you're going to a packed con, taking up more space, worrying whether you're gonna be running over people all day long, it's not worth it unless it's a tiny ass local con.

>> No.8534411

I think its cringy. Imagine all the people at the con who think you're actually disabled, you'll look like a huge attention whore if you ever get up to walk. If you choose to stay in character the whole time and pointlessly lug yourself around the con in a chair you don't need it'll be even worse.

>> No.8534432

I'd say don't do it. Not really because it's offensive, which some disabled people might think it is but I don't really, but because it will probably detract from your enjoyment of the con.

I'm paralyzed from the waist down and getting around cons is a god damn hassle. Plus I get a lot of people thinking I'm faking, or telling me to get up so they can sit down for a bit, and pretty much no one gets out of your way. Last con I went to my boyfriend just carried me for a while because I'm small and it was impossible to get around otherwise.

If you want to just do a photo shoot with one, that's not a big deal. But navigating the whole con with one will suck for you and make things more difficult for other people.

Go for it, OP. Feelings can be nice & feelings can suck ass, but we're not beholden to them all of our lives. We're allowed to get shit done when we desire to. This. I don't think it's offensive but save the wheelchair for the photoshoots etc. not the actual con venue. It's too much of a hassle and a bother for those who are actually wheelchair-bound. You should get a collapsible folding chair of sorts and mod it to look like a wheelchair.

You can carry it around with you, and just bust it out/sit on it for pics, then fold it up and walk with it after pics.

Unless you are actually disabled, try not to cram the halls with a goddamned chair on wheels.
