I guess this is where I shoud ask.
I want to know if you guys know about good armor tutorials? Me and my friends know nothing about making armors, but we want to cosplay as characters from monster hunter and would love to do it with quality.
Pic related, is the armor I want to make

>> No.8527309

>>8527138
Just gonna be honest: that is a terrible first project if you know nothing going in. I'd suggest trying something simpler first.
But if you want to do it, keep in mind the golden rule of cosplay. Quick, cheap, accurate/good: you can only pick 2.
Some good starting points:
http://entropyhouse.com/penwiper/costumes/helmsdeep.html
http://amenokitarou.deviantart.com/art/Foam-and-Worbla-armour-MEGA-TUTORIAL-467770119
http://www.cosplaytutorial.com/list/armor.php
Be prepared for a ton of work no matter what method you use, and likely a decent amount of money even for craft foam (which couldn't probably do those shoulders).
But really, the smart thing to do for babby's first armor is to do something simpler and/or smaller and get a feel for what works for you.

whats the best way to go about the bottom of the staff? I want to make it more rough than in the game, like a gem that hasn't been "properly" cut, unlike how evenly cut it is in the game.

Should I make a pattern and cut & tint plexiglass into the weird gem shape and glue it together? Or would this be awkward since the shape is going to be so uneven that it might be hard to apply pressure for the glue?

Would making a base and using transparent worbla and tinting that be better?

Not cosplay, but still sewing related:

I need to sew some screen door material (nylon I believe) to canvas. Would it be safer to hand stitch the two together or will a needle meant for heavy fabrics work fine? I've worked with canvas before but haven't with this nylon material so I don't want to break my machine from it.

>> No.8527805

>>8527449
>transparent worbla
Please stop calling it that. it is very disingenuous.

Also, TranspArt won't be sturdy enough for the base of a staff. It is durable, but will bend and twist if you applied that much weight to it. It'll snap back fine, but posing with the end touching the ground will not be good.

Your best bet would be to resin cast it. A solid block like that would be strong, and durable, and you can add some leds into it while it is curing and get it to light up nicely.

I second casting it. If it's a solid block of resin, you can rest the tip on the floor with no trouble at all. However, if you don't have a pressure chamber, your casting is going to have a lot of bubbles in it. Kamui cosplay made a shadowmourne axe with bubbly clear resin and I think it looked fine. You could scuff up the surface with some sandpaper for a frosty look.

https://www.kamuicosplay.com/2015/07/24/shadowmourne-no-time-for-farming/

Smooth-On's website has a TON of video tutorials on basic casting. A brush-on mold with a plaster and gauze shell would be cost-effective, but a block mold of solid silicone would be more durable and reliable. It's up to you how you want to approach it. Another learning resource is the youtube channel Brick In The Yard.

here's another build you can look at. http://imgur.com/a/5d8io It has some relevant links in it. You can also witness the danger of making a thin mold; his first casting was a bit of a disaster.

Anyway look into casting. There's a lot of relevant information in the links I posted here:
>>8529074
>>8529093

A really simple silicone plaque mold is what you need. Try Smooth-On's OOMOO. There is a very easily obtained clear resin called Easy Cast, but the directions advise against using more than 6oz at a time. I dunno how big you wanna make your rupee. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-BEya1xsjA Here's a good video showing an overview of what you need to do, but TAP plastic's products are often overpriced.

Though if casting intimidates you I think a cartoony paint job on a carved EVA foam jewel could look cute.

Google "varsity letters" if you want something pre-made. If you have access to a sewing machine, you can use double sided iron-on adhesive (one brand is Heat n Bond) to glue layers of fabric together, then go around the edges with a very tight zigzag on your sewing machine to secure it. You can get a special foot for a machine called a Satin Stitch foot.

Dude, Chaos Costumes hoof shoes aren't super expensive. (Look her up on Etsy.) I've dabbled in making hoof shoes and it's a fucking pain in the ass. Even cutting the heel off the shoe is hard; there's usually a big steel pin in there. But if you want to give it a shot but don't want to do casting, you can try carving them out of wood. If you don't have any tools at all, tool cost + time invested figuring out versus spending $170... I'd pick the $170.

It looks like you could get a red hoodie and a blue one then cut them both at just below your nips and sew the red top to the gray bottom. the light red looks like an overshirt. it depends on if laminating it is going to make the cards shiny, when you want the matte. if you have a good printer you should just print them out on a heavy cardstock and make extras for when one gets ruined.
although the issue with that then is that you're going to have to match the paint you use for the mask perfectly to the color the cards print out as, but if you're handpainting that wont be too hard. (unless youre using leather)

I'm planning a cosplay of a character with a hip-hugging skirt. I'm kind of self-conscious about my hips and worried the style will be unflattering on me. Would it be better to go with a slight a-line to look less unflattering, or go with strict accuracy?

This is more of an advice question, but I've moved to a new place and there is a small Comic Con here that is still being built up/worked on. One of the prizes this year for the cosplay contest is a round trip ticket back home to the states and I really want it. I was told the way the contest was worked last year was based solely on how much the audience cheered for you, and the winners were the 3 witches from Hocus Pocus while the runner ups were a bunch of Storm Troopers. I'm on a military base so there are American casuals here and locals (most of which are Japanese) occasionally. I really want to do something that looks traditionally Japanese but I'm afraid no one will recognize it and the judges might just go off of what the crowd likes and not craftsmanship.

Should I do what I want and do it well anyway/hope for the judges to be worth their salt, or just I just give in and figure out an easy crowd pleaser that is more "Americanized"?

Sabatons are made of plate, they don't "flex"

They rely heavily on the rivets for articulation.

So you should probably use a firmer material so it doesn't move, and then use some kind of sealant once you'e painted it to provide protection for the paint.

The alternative is just to make the whole thing rigid and put it over some kind of shoe.

Another trick I like to use for tricky seams is to use bias tape (or something) to stabilize it. I sew down the stabilizer (usually bias tape but elastic horsehair braid or anything stiff and bendable) along the edge and then fold it over so it's encased in the fabric and sew my seam like usual.

That's... Not screen printed. It's literally glued on sequins. You could pull some off if you wanted to.
I think the sequins are big enough that using more sequins in a different color world fill just enough space to look mostly solid, but a little translucent from a distance, which is what it looks like on the dress. Most importantly it won't add any dimension or mess with the flow of the dress like appliqué is going to do. Appliqué gives off a very old fashioned granny feel, there's nothing cyber about it, so it's going to ruin the feel of the dress.

Technically they're not. Sequins are essentially flat shiny beads. I've dealt with fabric like what Anon is using before and they're basically a thin foil securely glued on. They're not "printed" but they're also not removable without leaving gross yellow glue dots behind. It's usually called "holographic dot" spandex.

But anyway...

Nico Anon, the shapes look fine, its just the pink fabric that's throwing it off. Maybe it would have been better to go with a plain fuschia spandex since something that sparkly is going to have problems in photos anyway, and it would be easier to apply the shapes when you don't have to dodge the hologram dots. At this point you've already bought the fabric and it's close to the con, might as well keep going with it and if you really hate the result, just buy new pink fabric and remake it for your next con. The pictures you've posted are mildly blurry, but I don't think it looks too awful.

I'm going to be cosplaying as Bridget (Guilty Gear) in March of next year, and I'm wondering how to go about doing the props. I'm working with a seamstress to get the habit, headdress, shirt, cuffs/cuff links, and gloves done. I need to get the shoes, golden crosses on the cufflinks, and the props (the large yo-yo and the handcuff...thing, around his waist) done, but I have literally no idea how to go about doing any of these. I do know that in-game, the shoes function as roller blades, so maybe I could start with a pair of those Heelies or whatever, then paint over them?

Help is appreciated!

Imo you should carry Roger or his yoyo since his handcuff belt seems like it'd be cumbersome, especially if you're going to be in a convention hall.

>>8539426
If you're going to add stripes, you should do it before you cut the fabric.
Also you should screenprint the stripes on instead of dyeing. Fabric dye is liquid and will bleed whereas you can control where the fabric paint goes if you screenprint it.
Screenprinting by hand sounds hard but it's actually pretty simple.

I was asked to make some props for a small event to showcase cosplay for a photobooth. What kind of easy props would children/teens find fun and recognizable? I'm out of touch with anime these days so I stuck to more recognizable stuff like Sailor Moon, Studio Ghibli, and Pokemon. If there's anything else that's quick and easy to do, I'd love to hear it!

my girlfriend and I are cosplaying Alette and Eyvind from Banner Saga for DragonCon this year. I'm about to start on the staff for my costume, but I'm not very experienced with prop-making. My only past experience was a couple of resin accessories. I'm not really concerned about time or money, but I don't know where to start.

I'm looking for something that can be done realistically in a few weeks with materials that can be bought from local craft and home supply stores. The only real limitation I have is that I can't do a lot in the way of power tools due to lack of space. My first concern though is how to go about making the staff itself. Would I be best buying actual wood and carving it, or is there a better, more practical way to go about it? I've seen some suggestions about PVC piping as a base, but I don't know how well I'd be able to get the shape.

Hey guys -

I'm a complete noob to cosplay (and working with my hands, really), and my first project is Guts from Berserk. I have access to a shop and some power tools, so I (with help, of course) was able to cut a tapered, straight edge blade with a table saw, as you can see in this album (hand for scale):

http://imgur.com/xW9od9D,0FAZF72

However, I need help cutting the very tip of the blade. That edge does not stay constant throughout the whole sword, and instead changes angle at the tip of the sword. Any suggestions on how would I make it so that the sword does this?

From what Arda wigs told me when I asked in the forums Desert brown could work or light brown.

They say that a Derek would be good for straight out of the package with little work but Magnum has more volume if you know what you are doing. If you want the original thread I have that too.

Ken's hair is between colors so Light brown or Sandy could both work if you look at the Arda chart.

I think I could go with light brown, just judging by that picture. Desert brown seems a bit too light.

So basically, Derek is good if I want to put in less work, but Magnum is better because it has more volume and I know how to style? Unfortunately I'm not confident with my styling skills but I'm also not too confident that a Derek can work. Although apparently, looking through the gallery, someone has used a Derek for Ken before, albeit in a darker color than what you suggested.

I think the most important thing is to be able to do his bangs and how they do the... pardon the lack of better words, but side... sweepy... thing?

Besides commissioning an expensive vest, what would be a good substitute for Immortan Joe's body armor?

I asked a similar question a few weeks ago, but I wanted to get some brainstorming help.

I am thinking perhaps a football vest or even a tank-top for kind of a casual Immortan costume.

Also would Immortan in a kilt work? I always felt like the kilt would fit well in a post-apocalyptic costume, but the mask and armor+accessories would make it Immortan.

And what would I want to get the ashy, white skin-complexion?

I work as a face painter, and overall my favorite brand is Mehron's paradise line. It's really lightweight and smells like an almond joy. However I wouldn't reccomend it for body painting as it can get a little patchy when applied over large areas, plus it wouldn't give you the slick, shiny look you're going for. TAG is a brand I recently started using because they actually have a decent lilac color. I was pretty impressed with the quality. It's wax based, which gives better coverage and is more reflective. I found it more comfortable to wear than Wolfe bros, another wax based paint that is extremely opaque and durable, but can feel kind of sticky after a while. I can't give advice on Ben nye or snaz as I've never tried them.

For what you want, I would suggest trying TAG. It's lightweight and easy to apply, but has better density and shine than typical water based paints. Plus its fairly inexpensive. Here's a link:

http://sillyfarm.com/shop/face-painting-supplies/face-paint/tag-makeup

Also, I would suggest getting both red and a lighter color like pink or orange so you can add dimension. I'm so sick of seeing Steven universe cosplayers that just paint their face one flat shade of blue/red and call it done. It always looks like shit.

Well, I know that my Mehron red is weird in that it looks like a darker, murky red until you actually wet and apply it. That could be the case with TAG. Bright red is a pretty important color, so I find it hard to believe that their primary red would go on that dark. Purple is the only color that has ever given me trouble in that way, and since TAG actually makes good purples, I would trust their reds are fine.

Consider sending sillyfarm an email asking about it? They're usually pretty helpful. Also if you want a true neon, search for fluorescent, neon, UV, etc. Orange, pink, green, and yellow are the most common but you may find a neon red.

Get a seam ripper or small pair of sissors and carefully open it. Don't cut all the way to the ends, just snip a little bit and wiggle the button through.

If this gets lengthy I apologise.
I really want to cosplay Pic related (notice it's the first version of Senketsu, not Godrobe Senketsu so slightly less work) but I have absolutely no idea where to start.

Just some info:
>I'm a shit tier sewer, but I can get help if something is too difficult.
>I have an -okay- budget. Not too expensive but not dirt poor either.

Okay my questions:

>What fabric could I use?
I think this outfit works very well with shiny fabric from seeing other people's attempts, but I don't know a) which to use or b) which would be suitable to use based on my abilities.

>The breast plate....thing. Senketsu's eyes.
What material should I make this? I've never made a prop or anything remotely similar before so I'm at a complete odds with this one. I don't want it to look like paper mache. I want this part to look fairly professional so I am prepared to sink more money into this part of the costume.

>Keeping my nipples concealed.
How would I make the straps stay in place?

>Should I make fake boobs?
I'm a C cup. Ryuko herself isn't all that well endowed herself (maybe like a D?) so I don't know if making these would be necessary.

>The skirt part.

This has always confused me. Should I make the underwear separate and have the skirt part an attachable belt-type thing or sew it all together?

Sorry this was really lengthy.

Alright /cgl/, so I'm attempting at making my first cosplay. My cuts are just craptastic, same with my beveling but I think it's a pass. My question is, if I hot glue 2 pieces together and then plasti-dip it, will the plasti-dip go into the seams of the 2 pieces or become a smooth layer? If it doesn't mask over the seams smoothly, should i put tape over it to smooth it out?

Thanks.

Are you sure about this? Picking the nerfed version will make it seem more like you couldn't get the actual version right and the two outfits take very similar amounts of effort and skill to pull off accurately. If you must, break the costume down into pieces and just work on it one component at a time to see how it looks.

I decided I wanted to do this version seen as it's less popular. You do have a point that people might think I've been lazy, but it is a canon costume.

In all honesty I'm more interested in how I would actually make it theoretically. Which is why I made the post here. If it sounds too hard for me I will put it off. I just wanted some perspective as to what it would take to make.

It already sounds like it since you've asked so many basic questions about the costume, from even fabric choice to patterning to basic prop/armor construction to sticking things to skin (hint: fashion tape for most fabrics). You're not personally ready to pull off the entire thing and if you have someone helping you, good for you & direct your questions to the experienced person.

no, plastidip goes on pretty thin (assuming youre using the spray version) and putting multiple coats just to get rid of the seams might be a waste.
just use something like wood glue or maybe even the hot glue to fill those seams.

of course, sand everything.
that goes for your "craptastic" cuts.
just fucking sand everything down and it will look fine.

Seems like it's just messy.
If you haven't bought a wig yet, get one that looks kind of fluffy/spiky in the picture (basically, not smoothed down). These wigs are pretty easy to spike like that, they pretty much do it on their own.
All you'd really need is hairspray to keep it in place (a common favorite is Got2BGlued).
If you've already bought a wig and it's the smooth kind.. you might want to get another one.

/k/ here with a quick question
What have been you guys and girls general experiences, if any, with using deactivated weapons or very realistic weapon props at conventions? Obviously not Nerf toys or orange-capped Airsoft guns, just anything that could have been mistaken as a real weapon.
Have you been ejected/asked to leave because somebody got butthurt over a prop looking too real, for example?

I'd like to start incorporating firearms I already own into some future cosplay ideas because I think it adds a lot more detail than most toys or props, outside of custom built commissions, and I was wondering if anyone had any experiences doing such.

Even if you completely gutted your guns of their firing mechanisms, the con staff might still get on your case about them being made of metal.

Always check a con's prop/weapons policy on its website before you go, but generally speaking any weapon made of steel is not allowed; at least, I've never been to a con that allowed live steel.

>> No.8555856

>>8555702
As the other anon said, most cons won't let you use them just for it being made of metal.
If you do get in with them, don't tell anyone that they are real or else someone might get you thrown out.

If you just want nice pics, just have a photoshoot outside

I took it to weapons check anyway and they were fine with it.

If you do whatever you're planning on doing, get a hotel room or somewhere nearby, take your guns to weapons check, and if they reject them, leave them in your room. You might have to explain yourself a little bit (I had to explain the lighter thing and show them how it worked).

This is one of those cosplays where natural hair might be okay, but you're going to be pretty unrecognizable without the tentacle-ponytail.
Hunt around on Amazon for blue hairdye, and stay away from the spray-on kind.
For the tentacles, I'd try to make a separate clip that attaches to your existing-ponytail.
