Can we get a thread of cute outfits that are appropriate for everyday wear? Lolita inspired or what not.
Or self post cute outfits you wear on the reg and where you got them?

I see these cute outfits and know I could put some together of my own but when it's time to get dressed for the day I grab a pair of casual shorts and a shirt because I can't spend an extra 10 seconds buttoning up a shirt or putting some shape wear on.

At what point is something "jfashion"? When is it kfash or cfash? I usually consider stuff on taobao cfash if it's text don't include lolita, amo, liz lisa, or other jfash names. kfash is just stuff from korea for me. But since this board is for jfashion, when do these outfits become jfash?

I couldn't really tell you for cfash, but it's more the styling, not really the brand. Kfash has more emphasis on the legs, I've noticed, and not as many patterns. So you'll see lots of plain coloured jeans and shorts. It's also very monochromatic; there's not nearly as much colour blending as there is in jfash. Jfash is a lot of flowy, patterned stuff, with more emphasis on being cute, and a higher chance of having weird clothing choices. It's hard to explain; it's something that you just pick up the longer you're exposed to it. Examples in this thread,
>>8515655

These are all kfash.

I guess stuff like >>8516251 would be more cfash, as it's definitely not kfash, and something about it isn't setting off my jfash bells.

I think either tucking in the shirt to the skirt or replacing the shirt with a more fitted one would look better. Every piece is equally loose and layered so there isn't much of a silhouette in your fit. All the pieces definitely look cute separately as another anon mentioned though, especially the BJ skirt. I hate to be that guy, but this is a mess. The shirt and skirt don't match at all, and the accessories feel forced (pearls don't work with any of the colors here). Hairbow isn't adding anything here either.

Even though you've blurred out your face, your hair looks limp and greasy, and the bangs don't look like they're flattering your face shape. Hair styling and makeup is just as important as the clothes imo, everything needs to work together, you can't have one or the other.

That way you can still use the pearls, but get rid of the silver looking pearls. Do you have a white colored ring anon? Throw that in and see how it goes.
Do your hair into a ponytail, and probably use dry shampoo or something.

Your dress isn't very structured and honestly doesn't work well for the type of cute you seem to be going for; it's more suited to a casual, flowy feel IMO. The baggy, high-necked top and puff sleeves give you a brick-like silhouette, so try covering it with a cream-coloured cardigan like >>8518864 suggested. A longer/looser one would probably work well. Same with the necklace: go with a longer one and ditch the pearls, they play up the frumpiness of the blouse. Something like the lower layer of the necklace you have on now could work.

Also, wash/comb/style your hair, put on some socks/shoes, and don't take photos kneeling on the carpet.

What's worked for me is to put together a sort of wardrobe guideline for you to build towards.

> Gather up a bunch of inspiration pictures for the look you're going for.
Continue to go through them to make sure it looks like a fairly cohesive collection.

> Study your inspiration and break it down into its elements.
What kind of pieces do you want/need to create the look? Short skirts, long skirts, peterpan blouses, jeans? What style details should you look for in those pieces? fabrics, trims, patterns, etc.

> List out how much of each type of piece you want.
You don't want to be too vague or too specific here. Example: 3 mini skirts, 3 long flowy skirts, 4 blouses, 2 cutsews... etc. You can organize it how you like, but I did two versions, one for warm weather and one for cold, and organized it by tops, bottoms, etc.

>Pick a cohesive color scheme.
This is important for starting out. You don't want to buy a bunch of stuff that's cute and find out none of the colors work! If you like to have a lot of variety of color, build up your preferred neutrals to start and then add color once you have enough of your basics to work with.

>Go through your current wardrobe and see what fits or not.
I did a rating system for my clothes 1-5. 1 being "I almost never wear this because it's ugly or doesn't fit right" and 5 being "Perfect, would buy again right now". I tossed anything that was a 1 or 2 (you can pack it away if you're still unsure) and am planning on slowly replacing 3s over time.

>Figure out what's most important.
Based on the clothes that you have, what do you need the most? For me it's cute, well-fitting tops, so that's what I'll start purchasing first. If you don't have anything in your current wardrobe that works with the style, then you'll obviously want to concentrate on having a good mix of tops, bottoms, etc, and may want to start by purchasing full outfits one at a time. Just remember your color scheme so that you can mix and match.

I used to be a jeans and tshirt type of person everyday. I'm not sure if my way of going about it is the best, since what I did is that I saved up a ton of money and essentially bought a whole new wardrobe but that's not really feasible for most people. I'd also been looking at jfashion stuff for a while so I felt I had a pretty good grasp of coordinating. I just needed to take the plunge.

Maybe you can start by getting things that can go with your tshirts or jeans. Start out with nice blouses to go with your jeans and cute skirts to go with the tshirts (black is always a good choice). Eventually you'll start pairing the blouses and skirts together and your other stuff will fall to the wayside.

is the best advice because you have to experiment to develop a fashion sense. It would be a shame to drop all of this money on a whole new wardrobe all at once only to discover a few months later that none of it looks good, or that your interest in the fashion was fleeting, or that you love how it looks but don't really like wearing it every day, etc.
On top of that, it can be pretty jarring to flip your style 100% on a dime like that. It's not as big a deal since you're in a time of your life where you can do that and most of your peers won't know the difference (moving away for college, etc) but to your close friends and family, they might not be immediately supportive if you suddenly become unrecognizable to them.

I'm working on transitioning to a new style like this as well, and to build off of >>8521592
I've been really interested in something called a capsule wardrobe. The basic idea is that you put together a wardrobe of 37 items (typically including shoes, but not including accessories and undergarments) and pack away your other clothes which don't fit in to the wardrobe, and you develop a new one each season. I love this idea for several reasons.
1. It limits your spending, so even if you try out the style and absolutely hate it, at worst it's only 37 pieces which you wasted money on, which sounds bad but honestly most people probably have close to that number in their closet which they never wear anyway.
2. It keeps your purchases focused. With limited space in your wardrobe, you're forced to really consider how every piece will mix with every other piece. Not only that, but with a smaller number of options it's also easier to do.
3. You can switch out a couple of items each season, so that you're actively developing your fashion sense as you grow. You're not married to one large wardrobe because you were modest with your starting point.

>> No.8524107

>>8524099
You can read a lot about the capsule wardrobe in general online, there are several really good blogs which go in depth on what it is and how to start making one.

Not to totally self-plug, but I've also just started a blog of my own where I ramble about my process in trying to transition to a cute fashion (I'm aiming for Himekaji, though even as a fashion with few rules I admit my first attempt might not be spot on) so I can link that if you'd be interested in seeing some more in depth thoughts on all of these steps.
(And if anyone else runs any j-fashion related blogs, I'm trying to get into blog stuff so please show me so I can subscribe to you!)

That's why I said it wasn't the best advice. It was simply what I did. It worked for me though because I probably wouldn't have done it otherwise. I donated a majority of my older clothes so I couldn't crawl back to them out of comfort. I was forced to wear cute stuff because I literally had nothing else to wear after that.

>> No.8524131

>>8524121
Hmm, yeah for some people I guess that's the only way. Although for most people, just packing up the non-cute clothes and putting them somewhere inconvenient to reach would probably be good enough. For me personally, since I live in a small studio, I put them in a box on top of my dresser, and just having to stand on my chair to reach them discourages me from accessing them unless I really need to.
Certainly, at a certain point you have to make the decision "ok, I'm going to drop a bunch of money on this new style and no one's gonna stop me"
But that's another thing I like about the capsule wardrobe is you don't have to do it all at once, you can do it roughly one quarter at a time (since you make one each season). It's similar to what you did, but just a tad bit less committal.

I managed to get to my sweatpants that were on a high closet shelf (accessible only by a stool) under two other precariously balanced boxes. I seriously have no self control just get this shit away from me.

I always revert back to what's "comfortable" even though a lot of my clothes now are more physically comfortable than my jeans. Socially though, I guess they're less comfortable. What I mean is that I get a few curious stares and that used to make me want to hide and give up but I took away my ability to do so. But in my experience having ruffles over your chest and tummy is a no, but ruffles just above your chest (like along the shoulder) look good. High-waisted things are your friend, since you're thin but have big boobs, clothing that doesn't cinch at your waist will just gobble up your waist.

Fine. Sorry for the length then.

I'll leave thrifting girl alone (in the picture on the right) since while I think it looks bland, perhaps others would like it. Change shirts or change skirts though, they look weird together.

But the other girl, there's too many patterns and it looks overall bad. The top is hideously childish. By that I mean on a child, its cute and quirky-ugly, on people over the age of 7, its just ugly. There are too many adornments on the top (bows, lace, scallops, all on one item). And paired with the skirt that already has two contrasting patterns, its too much. She needs a neutral top with simpler (or no) adornments - preferably in cream since the skirt looks like that color but it may be the lighting. If that is the case, then use white. I'd stay away from other colors and let the skirt be the focus and stick with some nice simple heels, kitten or higher.

Idk, this dress has some weird elastic shirring around the waist that makes it seem kind of cheap. And the fabric isn't the best quality. Plus the colors are a little out of the ordinary (j got it in green.) Its a really cute style but imo this dress in particular isn't good for most grown up settings, but its fine for casual outings.
Plus I just started a new job for the state govt and I'm one of the youngest there so I don't want to be seen as any more immature than I already am.

I only took a rly bad quality quick pic in it when I first got it, but when I get to wear it out finally I'll make sure to take one and post it here.

>> No.8526443

I think shirring is pretty common to j-fashion. It's not a cheap detail, but even I thought it looked cheap when I first started getting into it just because shirring is used so little in western fashion. But now that I'm used to it I think it's pretty cute actually.

Photo on the left... Were you going for pastel basic bitch? Ain't nothing kawaii about leggings worn as pants. Those tennis shoes are also really not cute, and the jacket just looks like something from the 80's you'd find at the thrift store.

The second one is OK and decently cute but it just looks like it was hot so you decided to wear a skirt. The pieces have nothing to do with each other, and there's no center piece making it remotely interesting. It's not communicating any kind of style. It's just "clothes you happen to be wearing".

Both of your outfits have zero to do with j-fashion or even cute fashion at all, and I honestly have no idea why you would think it was remotely relevant to this thread.

Yeah that makes sense. It just kind of gives off a "one size fits all, but not really" kinda deal. It's not super flattering. Plus the buttons down the front aren't functional and they just kinda hang there which adds to making it look like a costume. I don't hate the dress by any means and I knew what to expect when I ordered it. If the fabric was just a little nicer I'd be perfectly happy with it but since it wrinkles so easily on top of everything else its just hard for me to imagine wearing it to work etc.

Agree to disagree on leggings as pants. Sweatshirt was long enough to cover my ass so it felt modest enough and I really like the baggy/tight look. I do think I should get a nicer pair of leggings to wear with it but I still plan on wearing it with leggings. And yep it was found at a thrift store ha-ha, but I really like it. I don't know why that's necessarily a negative thing. I feel like ive definitely seen sweaters like tht in jfashion before. + I thought the sneakers made it seem sporty/casual? Do you think different color sneakers would work better? I don't know what other kind of shoes I'd wear with that sweater.

And yes, again you're right I did just wear the skirt because it was hot. But I liked that both the skirt and shirt were deep colors. I can definitely see how there needs to be more coherence in the outfit though. But it was cute enough and comfortable for a hot day.

A lot of Japanese brands use shirring as a style choice without trying to make it one size fits all. On really slender banana body types it looks really flattering I think, which makes sense since it seems like that's the most common body type in Japan. This dress does just look like a cheap dress, but it also looks like your bust and hips are filling out the dress too much, which adds to it looking cheap. I'm guessing you have more of an hour glass figure, so for you shirring is always going to be hit or miss.

Even if your ass is covered, your whole thigh is just out there on display. In any case, it's not about modesty, it's about silhouette. Skin tight pants aren't a part of any of the styles we're talking about in this thread.
Your response to my criticism highlights your problem. You're so focused on liking how individual pieces look on their own that you're not willing to step back and look at how it comes together as an outfit. You saw pastel windbreakers in a decora coord (or something) and thought "pastel windbreakers are j-fashion" but just wearing one single item from someone's outfit doesn't make your outfit related. That jacket is appropriate for some coords, but the way you chose to wear it took it completely out of that context. You liked the jacket you saw so you didn't bother to take any note of what you saw these people wearing it with that made it look good.
Casual sneakers are also not a part of any of these styles we're talking about. Maybe something like creepers or boots or those fairy kei high tops or something, but there's nothing stylish about plain tennis shoes. It's OK to wear what you want, but if you think what you're currently wearing is a cohesive style that fits into the j-fashion world you're totally diluted.

The first windbreaker would look okay in a casual fairy kei coord. Any other pairing looks white trash honestly, or like a granny jogger. Just really bad. If you insist on wearing tennis shoes, go for the cute decora ones you can find online with all of the pastel colors. Maybe cute ruffle shorts or a ruffle decora/fairy kei skirt would look cute, but then accessorizing is important. No matter what color leggings or what they look like this will just not look good together. Like I said the combo is going to look very 46-year-old-woman-who-lives-in-a-trailer-with-6-cats

Preach. I really can't be bothered by other people when it comes to wearing what I love. I think it's sad to let others expectations force you out of doing/wearing what you love.

I'm 26 as well, and getting into otome/cute wear because I feel it fits my personality and how I carry myself compared to a lot of the fast fashions others my age wear or the whole jeans/tshirt look. Prob will be wearing it long term.

If concerned about society I believe you can always mature your look/pieces that you wear and still look very cute. Style can age with you.

>> No.8528257

That is cute! I love the top and don't see the problem with it that the other anon sees. Maybe it's because your skirt is slightly off center and its throwing them off? That's my only gripe. I think the color looks nice on you, I wouldn't worry about that suitable skin colors thing. Just look in a mirror to see if something looks good on you. I don't wear much bright yellows because it makes my face look like a puckered lemon, but I did find some more muted versions that look just fine. It's just a matter of finding the right hue. Also smseparating the color from your face can help. So color that doesn't flatter as much on your skirt, flattering color on your top.

I posted about this dress in the AliExpress thread before but I'll quickly offer my two cents. I bought this in navy and it looked really lovely. It ironed fine and looks a lot nicer and flattering in person.
Honestly maybe it's the pale colour that makes you feel like it's a bit costumey but how you style it makes a big difference too. I'm 21 and styling these with white oxfords or heels in general may help.
Sorry for the horrible picture but I think it's a really lovely dress and would recommend.

Navy does look a lot nicer. Also I find that Korean brands more often have clothing that emphasizes the shoulders, like pads or ruffles or stiff shapes, and slender waists and hips, with sleeker and plainer designs, more beading than lace, etc. It always has a bit of a mature look. Chinese fashion has top-heavy proportions as well but not to the same extent, and lots of emphasis on making the legs look long with short skirts and stuff. I think the fashion that looks most like anime is usually from China. J fashion tends to be baggier most of the time, still short skirts but looser usually, and more bows and lace and cutesy appeal. I think it's more flattering in a Western way, but it can also be kinda frumpy. These are all blanket statements since there's so much variation in all of them, but I think all of this applies a lot of the time.

I'm trying to dress more himekaji in daily life, and while this dress is not very himekaji in and of itself, I was wondering if it might be possible to pair it with certain accessories and possibly some kind of undershirt that might make this work for that style?
Of course I can just keep it around as a special occasion dress if it really can't work for my daily look that I'm going for, but I wanted some input before deciding that myself.

Would something like this work? Given that the pinks all match, of course.

Those shoes say pure hime to me rather than himekaji. And instead of worrying about matching pinks, I think a neutral color would look a lot better, like off-white or tan. Pic related with some see-through ankle socks would look nice, I think.
I'm also not a fan of the choker, but that's more personal taste.

thanks for the advice! I might go for shoes more like pic related, but I think it's a similar vibe to the ones you posted.
I might go with my melody themed jewelry instead, for some reason something about the top and the neckline is screaming my melody to me, haha.

This dress/coord are perfect for larme. I don't see it working for himekaji nearly as well as it does with larme.

Buy a couple of cute shorts, wear with shirts. Ease into skirts if you feel comfortable. Buy 2-3 cute, plainish dresses that won't stand out too much but still retain Jfash elements, preferably ones you can wear in a variety of settings. Start accessorising, wear tights (plain are fine too if you're really not comfortable with patterned) and wear baggy knitwear when it's cold. It's how I started dressing cute and although my wardrobe is not nearly as nice as it could (and eventually will) be, I found that it gave me more confidence and more sense of style in general. Doing things like painting nails and wearing Asian-inspired makeup (gradient lips, high blush, etec) help to pull the look together, but you have to experiment to see what works for you. Even small changes really make a big difference anon, and being tall won't be a problem if you trawl through the shopping threads here for ideas, plus you could always look at Western brands for clothes. OP's pic is the sort of thing you could find quite easily in places like Forever21 or Lipsy even. If you don't want to look costume-y, don't go for stuff like >>8521214 before you know how to co-ord your outfit properly, start small and simple and you'll be fine.

Ease into it. Buy a normalfag skirt and wear it with your shirts, buy some cute shirts and wear them with trousers instead of jeans. Buy a normalfag dress once you feel more secure and go from there.

I went from never owning a skirt until I was 19 and only wearing Jeans and Tees to wearing girly clothes every day. Haven't worn pants in a year. I'm sure you can do it too, anon, wear what you like!

I never wear a bra with backless/halterneck dresses. If you want support/perkiness you could try tape or stick-on bras, but I'd stay away from anything that has clear straps that show. I always find that they end up being noticeable anyway and they're not the comfiest things to wear IMO.

Hmm what about it do you think makes it larme? I don't have anything against larme, but it's not something that I see as a cohesive style yet.

Even if this particular outfit seems more larme, do you think it would stick out too much compared to other more true himekaji coords?

So how do you make short skirts work? I have enough of an ass that my skirt is always shorter in the back than the front, and I'm always paranoid about my underwear sticking out etc. Any advice? Do you all just tend to go for "safety shorts" or whatever they're called?

Shorts. I never go out in a skirt or dress without shorts underneath. I usually just wear PJ shorts because they're comfy and multi-purpose, and my skirts are rarely longer than mid-thigh on me since I'm tall, so I'd rather not risk it. I also wear tights to feel a bit more covered, but that's just me.

My butt is pretty big too so I do like >>8536306 and wear something underneath all skirts and dresses. I wear beige shape wear from Uniqlo instead since they're less noticeable and make everything smoother. The first wear is a bit tight but after a few wears they stretch out and are comfy while still retaining their shape. If you don't want shape wear you can buy some compression work out shorts. I had a pair by Nike (2.5" inseam I believe) and they were really comfy.

Also recommending shorts under short skirts. Black bike shorts are comfy and versatile, or you could get frilly ones like pic related - they add volume and look super cute peeking out from underneath skirts.

Not that anon, but it looks like a coordinate that could be In the magazine. The dress reminds me of mon lily or Swankiss, the choker is a nice trendy element that is perhaps even a bit too trendy for himekaji. The undershirt is a nice touch and also looks to me like something one of the Larme magazine brands would put out. There are himekaji brands in Larme but they're styled a bit less princess-y and more trendy, so that's kind of the vibe I see going on here. Only thing that imo doesn't work for Larme is the shoes. Those are very hime, like other anon said. But they don't ruin the outfit by any means, it just makes it more of a blended style which is perfectly acceptable. Good thrift find, that dress is very cute!

Anon, don't worry too much about what other people think if you suddenly change your look bc that's what everyone in high school does. No one will really notice of you start wearing skirts tomorrow, so do it, and then you might actually get the hang of it before you get to college. Also, maybe check out fille de porcelain's video on YouTube called "normal to Lolita in 5 steps" or something. When I was in hs I followed it super carefully transitioning from tomboy to otome/lolita.

I feel you anon. Im 6ft and chubby.
I have enough trouble finding normalfag clothes let alone searching for pretty things in niceglattering colors.

I find that if I want a shot at looking lovely the garment cant have sleeves cause they will be too short. It cant be anything fitted cause it wont fit and even if it does proprtions will be wrong. It cant have a waist cause itll be in the wrong place. It can't be a skirt cause it will show all of my leg because too short. It cant be undergarments because no one thinks anyone bigger than a 38b should have cute bras that don't cost $40. It cant be shoes cause wtf you boat footed size 10 wearers don't deserve cute.

Just so many restrictions when you even try.

As long as you keep yourself in good shape, regarding diet, exercise, and skin health, I don't see why you can't dress cute into old age. Maybe a few more layers and more conservative styles when you pass 50.

I'm 24 and just getting into nanchatte seifuku. If I wish to be the little girl, I damn well will be.

No reason being past your teens means you need to dress in Gap khakis and old catlady sweaters.

Does anyone know if hi-lo skirts (the version where the lining aka inner skirt is shorter than the outer) are still a thing in asia? When I was living in Taiwan in 2013, I saw them all over the place. Going to Japan next month and wondering if I should pack or leave my hi-lo skirt.
