Ok, so I'm considering selling what was my original dream dress because, even thought it's a beautiful, great-quality dress, I guess it doesn't have the same appeal to me as it once did. It was my first brand dress, too, and I'm afraid I'll regret it if I sell it. At the same time, it's very OTT and rarely gets worn.

Has anyone ever had this sort of experience? Did you regret selling your dream dress if you did sell it?

>> No.8513570

>>8513556
I was in the very same situation last year.

I sold my dream dress, which was very OTT. Sadly I only wore it once to a con, because otherwise I'm wearing lolita really casually. And I knew I wouldn't wear the same dress twice to a con. Seeing it in my closet without wearing it made me like the dress less and less. I ended up selling it when a new print came around that was very appealing to me and I don't regret it.

I sometimes see it on sale and think "wow, what a pretty dress, I should buy it." But then I remember I already tried it on and won't wear it and I don't feel as bad.

I'm in the same boat whereas I don't feel I wear my OTT sweet prints enough anymore, but I fell in love with the prints and their uniqueness, not necessarily my ability to wear them.

Unless I get desperate for money I don't see myself selling them. Even if I don't wear them they're cool collectible pieces. How awesome would it be to be that friend/relative who collected the quirky fashion dresses from Japan that can't be found anywhere else?

The advice I've often heard is to pack it up and put it in a box somewhere out of sight. Then, mark your calendar and have it remind you to re-evaluate the box in a couple of months' time. If you did not miss the dress at all, or you even totally forgot it was in a box and not in your closet, sell it.

If you find yourself missing the dress dearly, keep it, clearly you like it for more than just wearing to a con.

How do you gulls feel about getting notes and small gifts in your purchases (from LM, EGL, FB sales etc)? I recently sold a dress, giving the girl a few extra weeks over the agreed payment time as she said she'd been having some issues at work and school. As what I thought was a nice gesture, I included two teabags from by book of tea, a tab of cute page markers, a small packs of sweets and a hand written note saying I hope the dress would be a pick me up and that things improved. Her reply when the dress arrived was 'don't include unsolicited items to drive up my shipping'.

Thanks for your input anons, I was quite mindful of weight and the items I included didn't drive up the package over that weight bracket for shipping, I packed her item in one separate bag, should the sweets melt in transit (those packs that have 4 small sweets in them) as a precaution. Laws surrounding hijab oppress women by saying you HAVE to wear one. But the physical idea behind them is that a woman is worth more than her appearance and that beauty should be kept for friends you already know so people will not prejudge you.

The biggest thing is you don't want to sell it if you're not sure you're going to feel remorseful later because dresses become hard to find or hard to get, you don't want to part with it until you're sure you're ready, especially if it's a dress you love. Hi, I'm sorry I didn't notice your reply in the last thread!

First of all, you should really download Mercari! I don't live in Japan either, but I still managed to get the app. All you have to do is make a Japanese iTunes account. Here's a guide to doing it: http://www.reddit.com/r/bravefrontier/comments/24ssc6/how_to_create_japanese_itunes_account_no_credit/ (no, you don't need to download that exact app. any would do as long as it's free). Now once that's done, you're all set to download Mercari.

My shopping service is Kairai (http://kairai1414.livejournal.com/)) He's not a lolita-specific ss but his rates are fair enough. I think no country for tall men and chibitenshi also use mercari so you can check them out too.

I hope this helps you, good luck!

Well, it's like the smattering of western women that want a resurgence of modesty in clothing.
I read a thing floating around facebook the other day that that essentially said, the less clothes you wear, the more you're just a body, just meat to look at, and the less other people have to wonder about your personality/personhood.
It's an oversimplification, and might not apply, but I see how she could see that (as an outsider)

As an outsider, I know a couple things, one, that Sharia law basically says a women must cover herself for protection against the lesser natures of men, that men can't help their baser urges. People see this in any number of ways, that men have an easy 'out', that women are oppressed, that and that women do have personal responsibility to protect themselves however they have to.
Western culture has gotten past a few things. Showing hair is no longer sexual, we don't beat it to pictures of ankles and knees anymore. Just because we're that far down the line doesn't mean every culture is. Hair might not be sexy to YOU, but it might be to that middle eastern guy that's staring at you on the subway.

No. Stop. We're dressing in a way that people are going to see as, at best, cute but weird. At worst, like fetishists. Lolitas are categorized as "henjin" (weirdo) in Japan. I study in there so I'm rather cautious of my professors seeing me in lolita due to that. I wish the general public in Japan doesn't know about lolita so they'd just think I'm on my way to a fancy dress party or something instead of immediately thinking I'm weird.

Nothing good is going to come out of trying to make it so that the general public knows about lolita imo.

Have any of you been wearing Lolita almost exclusively for so long that it's, idk, part of your identity in a bad way? Like everyone knows me as "the girl who wears Lolita", but it made me realise that if I stopped wearing it, there'd be nothing else notable about me.
It's a bit scary. I want to branch out into other fashions like Larme-kei and gothy stuff, but I just feel like my relationship with clothes is a bit over the top. My life literally revolves around dresses. If I was a great blogger or something then at least I'd have something, but I'm so-so.
I guess I'm just a little scared, I don't know what I'm like when I don't have Lolita to obsess over.

Ought to add that being thought of as "weird" in Japan is pretty bad, it's nothing like "omg i'm sooo WEIRD XDDD" or quirky.

>>8516714
Not really sure, but people tend to leave you alone if you're dressed outrageously. I get people attempting to pick me up (nanpa) and people handing me flyers for recruiting for dodgy "girls bars" when I'm in normalfag but almost never in lolita.

Same here. I'd much prefer people thinking I'm some kind of lone weirdo who got lost on her way to Disneyland than have the general public know what lolita is. Especially when that view is tainted by the idea that we're all sad little infantile histrionic weeaboos with a peter pan complex because let's face it, media exposure is practically never flattering. I'd like to keep my infantile weeabooism private thank you very much.

>>8516711
I get you. Besides lolita I also wear otome and mori-ish clothes but I practically never dress plainly. The last time I went out wearing jeans and a hoodie people didn't even recognise me, and the few that did immediately jumped to the conclusion that there must be something wrong when honestly I was just being lazy.
Lolita is pretty much my main hobby right now. I have a few other interests but lolita takes up like 75% of my daily thoughts. I sew, but all I sew is lolita. I got into knitting because I want to knit myself cute lolita boleros. My main non-frilly interest is biotech which is kind of required for my studies, but if I have to chat with someone who isn't into lolita/sewing/knitting/science I have absolutely no idea what to say. Nice weather we're having?

Hair is seen as being sexual and that if one wears a wig then men would not be able to control themselves. The thing with that though is that Muslim women only have to cover up when at the masque and at the mosque women as supposed to pray in the back or a separate room so that they don't distract the men. There are Christian groups that do something similar with women having to sit in the back and wear head coverings when they are at Church.

I know that with Jews there is such a thing as a Jewish wig which is ON for Jewish women who belong to the sects that state that women are supposed to cover their hair.

My issues with Lolita that wear hijab is that the point of choosing to wear a hijab is a choice to be modest. And when you wear something as ostentatious as lolita you aren't really being that modest are you? I also have issues with reverts because I can not comprehend why any female would do that to the selves opting for a religion that literally has so many rules to make you less then a man.

>> No.8516790

This so much.
And this doesn't mean that Lolitas are dressed like whores, au contraire we are all covered up perfectly well, but lets be honest here: Imagine you're a guy and you're walking in the street and at your right you see a girl with a short red cocktail dress, high heels, long hair, and at your left a girl wearing Cristal Dream Carnival with matching bonnet and tights, tea parties and a hijab, who do you think is attracting more attention?

Grew up strict Catholic. I went to one of the churches that required loose below-knee skirts or dresses, covered shoulders, and a veil or hat (usually a veil). The goal as I was taught it was not that it was any sort of sexist thing, but that it was because if you spent time worrying about your appearance for church you were neglecting the real purpose of church, which was worship. Worry about appearance is vanity, vanity is a sin, sin distracts you from God. "Modesty" is maybe not the best term, "humility" is a better word to describe what I was taught.

From what I understand, Islam focuses on the detachment of oneself from the physical world, and that's part of why some practice hijab, similar to what I was taught (why some women choose the all black head-to-toe covering). Either way, Lolita doesn't fit that model of thought. It's neither modest nor humble, and its focus is very vain and materialistic.

I feel pretty similarly. My only other hobby besides lolita is video games, and honestly I only play a few games really casually anymore because between work, my studies, and lolita I don't have the time. Like the other anon said, I picked up sewing specifically to sew lolita, I spend a lot of time searching out new dresses and planning meetups, and I don't know what I'd have left, personality-wise, if I suddenly left. I've tried dabbling in otome but found it much more difficult to get right without looking frumpy and/or like a half-assed hipster. I get pretty positive reactions to my lolita coords now and I feel comfortable in it.

I don't really think of this as a scary or bad thing though, I mean unless it's a bad habit (like you're wracking up credit card debt to fund your shopping) there's nothing wrong with having a solid hobby to devote your free time to. Just because it's a little more eccentric than like, stamp collecting or gardening doesn't mean it's wrong. Plus, having more than one really dedicated hobby is super expensive usually. But I would say if you feel uncomfortable with the idea, then branch out to try new things and see if you can strike up the same obsession in something else?

Wearing a hijab is a choice, it's not forced except in a few countries where it's illegal not to wear it. You can't say that every woman who makes the choice to wear hijab does it to be modest. Do you wear clothes instead of going out naked because you want to be modest? No it's cultural and some women may feel "naked" if they don't wear hijab, or they may wear it for traditional reasons, respecting ones culture, etc. I don't see the "issue" of wearing hijab with lolita or any other fashion, if they feel happy with it then it's no concern of yours is it?

That girl in particular though is a revert. So I suppose you can call it a tradition of her new religion but it wouldn't really be a family tradition then. Like there are all kind of rules when wearing a hijab that are supposed to be followed and my point is that those rules aren't being followed when wearing Lolita. for example my step grandmother is Muslim and if she has her head covered then she is also not wearing any makeup and is in loose fitting long clothing. But she only does this during Ramadan, while praying, or at the mosque. Other then that she's normally in some fancy designer garb.
