To answer my own questions,
Yes gems need paint, even if you think you're already Pearl pale or Garnet's shade of maroon-brown.

And there were two Roses I liked in the last thread, >>8508959 and >>8509977, who both had nitpicks (the former needs to pose better and a better skirt shape; the latter needs to apply the same gathered draping technique to the bottom-most part of her dress because it looks unfinished), but were generally on the better side of Roses I've seen

Okay, so I've been lurking these threads for a while now and I actually really want to cosplay Rose Quartz- and do it well.

I've got a pretty good idea on how to do the actual dress, but I'm at a huge loss for the wig.

I was thinking about kinda styling the top like a hime gyaru bumpit sort of wig, sewing in additional wefts for length and volume, and doing a mix of the tube curls and tight ringlets so it looks a bit more natural.

Anyone have any tips/irks/not to dos to keep in mind while I'm trying to get this shit down?

After seeing a bunch of Rose wigs, it happens that most of the ones I liked had exclusively big cartoony tube curls. It's possible (or likely) that this is because nobody's been able to pull off the tubes+ringlets combo well yet.

I think a problem with ringlets is that they tend to relax over time and look messy. You'd need to be very neat and very deliberate in your tube vs ringlet placement and spray the sucker down to keep all the curls in place, but otherwise your method has the potential to be good.

Oh, also seconding on getting the silhouette right. A lot of wigs have fantastic volume on the sides but woeful flat tops that make the cosplayer's face look more squat and wide.

I normally refrain from posting bathroom selfies, but on an OT note this girl should cosplay Brandy's Cinderella.

You're on a good track with the himegyaru bump, but a bumpit won't be enough. There are tutorials from lolitas that use matching clip-on ponytails to make a hime bump if that's helpful. Good luck!

The mix of ringlets and tube curls I'm still debating because I've seen so many strictly tube curls that look shitty, but the solely ringlets do end up looking flat and disgusting. Pic somewhat related, I rather like this style of ringlets but I want to put more volume on the sides/back + length...

As for color, I was thinking of something like Arda's Rose Pink.

I'd say baby pink is closer buuuut I'm not sure if we have a really good canon color reference for rose yet and also remember to pick a hue that won't clash with your gem color. Seems off. I think blue blush/makeup is more appropriate on a pale white person doing Pearl than full paint. Same on a brown person doing Garnet; makeup to make them appear garnet-colored, not full body paint.

A brown person painting themselves slightly-pinkish-brown for Garnet, especially her old color scheme (seems to be the more cosplayed one), would just be...ridiculous.

10/10 agree. A lot of them are so massive or unnatural they basically become a fabrication challenge. Don't just rely on wig fibre to hold its shape and volume, it won't survive.

It's drawn pretty hair-like a couple times so I think that's the right way to go, it would just work better with a stiff base underneath the wig hair rather than just a wig styled into some points. Same with Garnet, Sardonyx, or any others with hair that is just a simple shape like that. I am not a fan of the ones that just make it helmet-like with no actual hair.

What concerns me more than Garnet is Amethyst here. Ice Violet is way, WAY too saturated and blue for her. I'd also think that a Claudia would be a better base for her. I had one a couple of years ago that I straightened slightly and teased. The thing was bigger than John Cena.

I'll bite, I'm working on Young Amethyst as well as finishing up the rest of Connie's outfits (as well as a super trashy Utena design for the lols) for my bingo!

(Excuse my room) I don't know if I should just keep this color for Amethysts top, because it matches the color of my paint/tights, but it does have a bluer, darker hue in the show. Also it feels like something is off, are the ruffles on the bottom too much? I really like it, but it's giving me a pearl vibe. (Disclaimer, the shirt is the only thing somewhat finished. Still need to get a gem, make a collar and dye wig haha)

Yeah, I'm pretty confident that I have an idea that will work and it pretty much just involves a bunch of foam (and MAYBE a harness if I decide to make the lower part of the wig a separate piece for weight distribution's sake) and I'll post a bunch of pics and I guess sell the wig after because I don't actually have plans to cosplay Rose. I'm not saying they don't have hair, I'm saying that wig fibre alone won't hold the exaggerated shapes that some of the characters have (or at least not with the lack of experience every SU cosplayer seems to have). One of the better Peridot wigs from last thread started as a fabricated base with wefts stuck on top, and it looked a lot cleaner than the just straight hair ones.

Baby Pink and Bubblegum are definitely the best bets, imo. I personally don't like Rose Pink at all (for anything) as it sometimes looks way too close to that ebay color in certain lighting. I think that Epic Cosplay's Princess Pink also seems like a good choice, as well as either PK03 or SPK07 from Classewig.

I need a little advice for my lapis color. I'm having a pretty hard time finding tights in the color I really want, so I'm going to bite the bullet and order from welovecolor. I'm leaning towards sky blue, but I'm not totally sold yet. I'll match the makeup to whatever color I end up picking.

Re: Lapis colors, what you choose probably should depend on your dress color. IMO it always looks kind of weird when the skin tone is very close to the dress tone. Pic related, skincolor references I've been making for myself.

EVA foam with Worbla/Wonderflex on top for damage proof. It will be pricey, but if you expect them to take some hits, it will help.
The only problem after might be the paint chipping, but with a good primer, multiple base coats of paint, and top coat, you should be safe.

I just noticed the lace edge on the Roses gem cut out and now I'm horrified.

So I'm contemplating possibly cosplaying Rainbow Quartz.

However, I might commit one of the /cgl/ cardinal sins: being inaccurate on purpose.

I have personal aesthetic issues with Rainbow Quartz's hair. It's either mostly blonde with only subtle pink/purple highlights, or it's actually completely blonde with the "highlights" only coming from the lighting in the room reflecting off the hair. Either way, I'd prefer the pink/purple to be stronger.

So I might use one of the wigs in pic related, or get a fluffier blonde wig and dye streaks. I really like those wigs tho and I might just say "fuck it" and go with one or the other.

If I end up in a SUG thread with "the clothes are fine but the wig is all wrong!!!" attached to an image of me, I can live with that.

That's the double-edge sword of hiperlon fiber: easy to style, but also easy to tangle.

I think that applies to most complaints on the web. If you honestly pay that much attention to what tumblr thinks you're just asking for trouble and a migraine. Ideal Rose, Not an actual ham planet.

For real, Rose is drawn near identical to Jasper in terms of body type, yet people still get mad at rose being anything but overweight as all hell.

But, moving on. Most rose wigs I've seen have been horrid. I think its when people try make the beehive look is where they all go wrong. Maybe something more naturally styled would look better, albeit not 100% faithful to the show.
As for the belly button, when people actually have a star cut out, due to the being hamplanets in every example I've seen yet, it looks awful. And those that have skin coloured fabric for the start generally don't match the skin colour of the cosplayer. I wish people would play around with the design more, maybe instead of any actual hole do it as lace or something. Getting legit mad about people butchering basic wedding dresses they found at the thrift store.

Shield prototype go. The photos isn't catching how day glow the edges are. Black sharpie marks on the edges so I can line it up in the machine again if I want to make another etch or add the screw holes. I have nylon screws to get clear vinyl handles attaches to the edges and then try to paint the rim with light blue plastidip or some cheaper alternative
