Small update, unpacked, settled in, got 20 minutes of pure walking around the convention video to bring. It also has a few pictures I took of random cosplayers. Video is still rendering now, should be on youtube in about an hour or so.

I think 90% of my con was spent waiting in line for Initial D.

Did it seem like otakon went by really really fast for anyone? I felt like it was over in no time, and not for any particular reason. It wasn't even like I was having so much damn fun that time flew by, it just....ended.
It was so nice that it wasn't nearly as crowded as it's been in previous years. I could actually walk around and not have to rub arms with sweaty, smelly people.

My highlight was being dressed as Cinderella and talking to some little girls also dressed as Cinderella who were super excited about seeing all the "real life" princesses.

I didn't go to Otakon this year, but I've had the feeling that it went by super fast, too. I was expecting to mope all weekend because I wasn't there, even though I usually go a lot. I barely moped at all. It isn't that I don't miss it, because I definitely do and I really miss going to huge cons (the cons here are small). But I'm pretty hyped for next year being the last year in Baltimore and the move after, so maybe that's also why. The excitement over the move (for me) makes it feel like this year's gone by much faster compared to last year? Or something.

I think they were understaffed for the 'rave' which was pretty meh in terms of other con raves

I had a really fun time. Can't wait to go next year for the last time before the con goes to D.C.

My only problem that I cringe about this year is my awkwardness and shyness. I wish I could apologize to the people that I purchased from after probably making them think that I'm some anti-social sperglord or something.

I just dunno how to talk to strangers really well without having my friend or someone with me so I don't feel uncomfortable at all.

Otakon was mad fun. I didn't take any photos really though sadly. It's probably the most fun I've had at Otakon in a while. Probably one of the few pictures I have. Thank you p3 cosplayers tolerating my drunk ass.

It opened at 10 so 10 - 6 is an eight hour shift. As a dealer I know a lot of other dealers don't like the expo hall open much past 8 hours because then they have issues w/staffing, breaks, ot, whatever. Also working a ten hour day in a concrete bunker sucks. Ota probably is looking at the same issue with the guards covering the doors, you have to get a whole second shift of people coming in that you could of used somewhere else...

This year's Otakon was seriously a blast for me. As always the highlights of Otakon were the /cgl/ meetup both nights. Overall the con was a solid 8/10 for me. Spending time with you guys really helped that score.

I tried to make it my mission to find the socially awkward people and/or new people and try and get them talking to me or anybody else. My end goal was to make sure everybody had a good time at these meetups, even if it meant I had to sacrifice some of my own fun for it.

I guess now I'll just say something about each of the people or groups that I met that stand out in my mind. I'll either use the character you cosplay or some other way to identify you since I won't put your real names out there.

I've actually known this guy since the Otakon 2010 meetup but we only recently realized we knew each other at AnimeNext a few months before Otakon. I had a fun mini game where everytime I saw him in the crowd I would just say "Hi -his real name-" and just walk away. I think this occured 7 times total at random.

I know there were alot of people I talked to Friday night but I was so wasted alot of it is a blur. There was nobody I met that I outright disliked. I don't have alot of "nerd friends" in my day to day life so hanging out with people like you is my one real weekend of fun a year. Even if for whatever reason I came off as disliking you, believe me, I would hang out with any of you on my freetime assuming you lived near me. I've made alot of friends from past meetups and I will hopefully retrain most of you as internet contacts that talk every now and then.

As for the future. I mentioned it to some of you but for the most part, the only con I hit a year is Otakon and I don't see that changing in the future. Otakon 2016 is likely going to be the final con I goto. The reason is I don't feel like dealing with the move to DC. I've been to every Otakon since 2006 and I've been burning out over the passed few years. I really need to secure a family & career at this point in my life. So Otakon 2016 is the finale for me and I'll do everything in my power to make sure the 2016 meetup is best one yet.

All that being said, I only adopted the trip for Otakon threads, once these threads are done I'll fuck off back to infinitech@n. You'll all be free from my faggotry.

This was the first Otakon I've ever been to and the second con in total, and I gotta say I had a lot of fun.
The people were great, the panels were pretty good too, and the dealers room was even better. The only problem was the group I was in, they just wandered around everywhere aimlessly sometimes and only went to the AMV panels. My friend that I was cosplaying with was pretty cool, but I feel like he really went out of his way to meet people, since he ALWAYS took as many pictures as possible and met up with a ton of people, I'm just not that kind of con-goer. I like the spontaneity of running into people after a good panel or event and chatting it up. Plus, I feel like he hung out more with the people he met than us in his group, which is kind of disappointing since no one in our group ever saw him.
The rave was definitely the best part for me though. There was another group that another one of my friends from high-school was in, and they were WAY more into the rave than my current group. My group was pretty much like "yeah, we might as well go to the rave" instead of "I can't fucking wait for the rave". Plus I purchased a ton of rave gear and everyone in my group made fun of me for looking like a total furry.
I loved the drum n bass DJ on the first night, but I went to the rave alone and I just stood around and tried to get a good idea of what goes on in there. The DJ's on the second night were pretty bad, they just played a whole bunch of that big room stuff that's actually pretty hard to dance to. But I stayed the whole night with the group I was in because it was almost everyone elses' first rave (including mine) and we were all having a fucking blast. It was a great first experience since I've never really had a chance to actually dance like that; and I'm glad I did it with a group of people that I loved being around and were just as into it as me.
Overall, it was fantastic. I can't wait for next year.

Reason he went there is because he wanted to find a place to smoke weed and my dad has a vaporizer. This was also my first Otakon. The sets for the first night was alright. All dnb, it was pretty hype. The second night, I was over the electronic music. The first DJ was meh. I didn't really like the trap DJ, and neither did anyone else in my group, honestly. None of us are that into that kind of stuff anyway.
It was just SO hard to dance to the music for the first two hours, since all the synths for the big room DJ's were unbearably loud compared to everything else in the song. That definitely didn't stop me, though. I would have had soooo much more fun if the music was just better! I would have loved it if they played dnb the whole weekend, but that's just what I like hearing in that setting.

It was pretty funny for one person in our group though, since he's never danced before and he said he was just going to stand around and take pictures inside. When we got in, he eventually settled into it and started dancing with us, was really fun.

We never made it to any of the meets because of how late we put on the costumes and factoring in how long Momiji and Remilia took for make up. Rooming with them was a blast though and I would have never slipped into a 2hu cosplay had they not offered.

I think we must have been dancing for about 2 and half hours, since we got there at little before 10 and left at 1:30 with three breaks in between. I didn't get anything from that shitty tap at the rave, I needed some ice cold water (that's only one dollar).

I don't understand why people go in there with thick or big clothing/outfits. I had to pull my shirt up half way through because I was tired of feeling how sweaty my tank top was getting.

1449 is kind of a joke, and while they technically don't lie about what they do at parties they certainly don't tell most of the truth. Kinda like a fat girl taking face only shots on tinder.

Having been to these parties, they mainly consist of 5 to 10 people doing the shit that was boring even back in high school, the rest wondering when the party will actually start, and those same 5 wondering why there are any new people at all, out loud, obnoxiously

Masters of sleight of cam, they make sure their page looks like their parties are the shit online. Whatever you see there, remember it was only like that for a moment, and intentionally.

The rest of the the time is filled with people staring at their phones or playing first year frat house drinking games. If you're lucky you'll catch the occasional video game being played on the side

My first time cosplaying did better than expected

'Sup noobs. Namefagging here because despite my boyishly youthful countenance, I'm actually an old man who still can't figure out how to tripfag despite posting here for over a decade. Anyways, my Otakon report.

I had such an amazing time cosplaying as The Rocketeer. I was surprised at how many people recognized the character since the film wasn't that popular when it was released. It made me so happy whenever somebody said it was their favorite childhood film or a parent would tell their child "look, it's The Rocketeer!" and he or she would look at me in wonder. However, I always felt bad whenever someone complimented me on the appearance of my costume because I myself did not actually do any work on it. The jacket was from a company that does hollywood film jacket replicas, helmet was done by a propmaker from California and I commissioned my brother to make the Cirrus X3 rocketpack which he spent many weeks to create. I always gave credit to these individuals whenever someone asked because I want to be honest and honor the work of these people and not mislead anyone into thinking I did any of this myself. I know I am a mental retard when it comes to the arts and crafts and I don't have the time or the skill to create the cosplays that I want to. The reason I cosplay is because I view it as a ritual to align myself with a story that resonates with me. By dressing up as the character, it gives me a connection to the mythology of the story that I enjoy and allows me to share this experience with other people. That's why I'm a lot more satisfied when someone says they loved The Rocketeer movie or how it was their favorite film as a kid and we get into a discussion about it than someone simply saying that my cosplay looks awesome.

I totally respect the crafting aspect of cosplay and truly admire the dedication and skill that goes into creating an outstanding costume. The creative process itself I feel aligns you even more since you yourself are going on a journey as you yourself construct a character that you love and enjoy. However, I feel there is a dissonance if you are simply creating a costume simply because you like the design or the aesthetics and don't use that as a stepping stone to get more involved into the mythology of where that appealing look came from. I agree with this. I haven't missed an Otakon since 2006. And it seems every year less and less people are cosplaying. Otakon is slowly becoming a more normalfag thing every year.

Thats how it seems to me anyway, I have no numbers to go by, just observations. This was the first time I ever actually "cosplayed" and I put that in quotes because I looked nothing like Bane from the movie. I was just trying to act as an icon to coordinate the meetups.

My other problem is there are no interesting panels for me. I either watch super old anime, or currently airing anime. There are panels for old anime sure but theres nothing a panel can teach me about those series that I don't already know.

An example, i'm a big JJBA fan, I had no urge to goto any JJBA panels because once you've been to one, you've been to them all. I can't wait to be told how many stands are music references again. I might just not see the appeal of panels.

As for the anime viewings, my attitude towards them was adjusted slightly this Otakon. I used to think they were pointless because if i'm going to watch Chinese cartoons I'm going to do it in the comfort of my own home. On Saturday I watched one of the Lupin the third movies with an audience and even I have to admit the audience interaction made it a bit more hype.

As for the dealers room, they only sell junk in there. I picked up one junk item that I regret and I picked up a very specific type of controller I needed for a personal hobby of mine. Again, i'm sure this is just a personal problem with me. I download everything; anime, manga, doujins, games, you name it. If you collect then the dealers room is probably awesome for you but its just not for me.

So with all these factors its really hard for me to have fun at Otakon pre-seagull meetup.

I was on /fit/, where I was linked to an /r9k/ thread about some autistic guy roaming about Otakon and asking about what to do because he didn't have the balls to speak to anyone and try to make friends. So i have a few questions, I've never been to Otakon which is sucky, but i've wanted to for years. They're now clearly going through a transitional phase, so the cost of traveling across the country seems a bit shaky. so here's what the future looks like

I've been going to Otakon since 2002 and I can tell you guys, shit has barely changed. Yes, I admit there is less impressive cosplay than there once was, but the con itself is as it always has been. When you're talking about a con that's had 10s of thousands of attendees for over a decade, you're always going to be talking about a con with "normal fags" by nature of its enormity.

It was really sweet meeting everyone on Friday at the meet and I'm really sad that I couldn't go to Saturday's. However, definitely going to try to go to Katsu! Spent a shit ton of time in the dealer's room. Was cosplaying as Uzuki Shimamura for iM@s but was veeery seldom recognized, and when I was recognized, it was by a bunch of middle-aged men who had gone to the 10th anniversary live. But they were really excited to see a cinderella girl cosplay, so it really made my day!

So my hotel room ceiling caved in when it was time to go to the meet so that sucked OTL but it was still a really good day in general, and I ended up meeting Kohime Bashiri! She was in im@s cosplay so I waved and then she came over to me running and hugged me, I was so overwhelmed by how cute and sweet she was! Felt badly for interrupting a shoot she was in, but then we got pictures together. It was all in all a very good time.

Dude the badges were a hot mess. They really were. With the mailing the person I know who had theirs mailed to them never received a confirmation email, nor did they give her a number after she emailed them so she had to go to the post office on a whim two days before the con to get it. The convention attendance dropped this year yet the lines were still hella backed up thursday night... for the years leading up to the last two I have managed to wait in line maybe 20 mins for my pre reg badge. last year I had to go Friday morning and waited 1.5 hours and this year I waited for 1+ hours in a line for Artist Alley that literally did not move AT ALL in that hour and a half before they basically told us to leave and come back in the morning for our flags.

the con as a whole felt really weird. it went by quickly and nothing really happened? the panels i went to were disappointing. revenge of the tentacle was fun but probably only because i'd never been to any others beforehand. tried to get into a few others but they were full with about 100+ people still in line (myself included).

one of my roommates would not stop bitching about every little thing the entire time and was extremely rude to anyone around them and really put a damper on the weekend.

was it just me or was the dealer room and aa lacking this year? obnoxious yaoi booth man was sorely missed and not many things in the aa really caught my eye.

everything mostly just felt off tbh. i've spent the last few months in a weird slump and i'm realizing now that i barely ate anything all weekend for some reason. a funimation guy did say i was the best sabo cosplayer he'd seen all weekend though so the con wasn't a total loss.

the panel stuff honestly should be fixed. before this year i'd been to the worst anime ever panel every con and it's always been packed. i fucked up at first and headed to panel 7 because i thought it was being held there, but some sailor moon movie was playing. a guy walked out of the room and said not to bother watching because it sucked, and the room was pretty fucking empty.

panel 7 is monstrous, and seeing as worst anime ever always draws a crowd, it should probably be locked into there. friday morning i checked out the women and gender in one piece panel and it was in p7 and also fucking barren but i knew it was going to be like that from the start. with the amount of available rooms for panels, i would think otakon would do a better job of assigning appropriate locations.
