Some new questions to start us off

>What do you think are nanchatte faux pas?
>What makes an outfit not nanchatte to you?
>How do you judge balance in a coord?
>Favourite and worst things in the fashion?

And copypasta from previous thread for discussion:

>What is your favorite style? Are you more kogal or do you fall more along the general preppy route?
> Leg wear? Do you prefer tights, thigh highs, knee length?
> What's better: loafers or will any preppy shoe style work for you?
> Your skirts: plaid or solid? Cardigan or blazer?
> Any certain hairstyles you fall on when you're wearing it?
> Where do you wear it? Is it your uni. wear, con only, daily...?
> And where are your favorite places to shop? Obviously there is bodyline, ebay, thrifting...but do you also wait until things pop up on y!jp auctions to get more authentic things?

>What do you think are nanchatte faux pas?
Cleavage showing is the prime no-no.
>What makes an outfit not nanchatte to you?
Getting a halloween store slutty schoolgirl outfit and trying to pass it as nanchatte.
>How do you judge balance in a coord?
Depends on the body shape really, if you are skinny you'd look better with baggier clothes, if you are curvier, more form-fitting clothes may be best since with baggy clothes you risk looking frumpy.
>Favourite and worst things in the fashion?
Favourite: the whole put-together and serious look. I'm more of a preppy gull.
Worst things: Those mock thigh-highs with cat faces. Shoehorning weird tumblr apparel like galaxy print or skeleton tights.

and...

>What is your favorite style? Are you more kogal or do you fall more along the general preppy route?
Preppy. I'm a tad too old for kogal.
> Leg wear? Do you prefer tights, thigh highs, knee length?
As much as I like OTKs and thigh highs, tights help keep everything more serious.
> What's better: loafers or will any preppy shoe style work for you?
I like low-heeled Mary Janes a lot. Oxfords also go a long way.
> Your skirts: plaid or solid? Cardigan or blazer?
Both kinds of skirt work for me, but I'm more of a cozy cardigan fan.
> Any certain hairstyles you fall on when you're wearing it?
My hair is pretty short, so I wear headbands. I plan on growing it out to rock some ponytails.
> Where do you wear it? Is it your uni. wear, con only, daily...?
I'd like to wear it daily, but only for special occasions. For now.
> And where are your favorite places to shop?
Thrifting is my game.

Also, question: what magazines do you look at to have inspiration, like Popteen?

>What is your favorite style? Are you more kogal or do you fall more along the general preppy route?
I like both, but preppy is more easier to wear day to day.

> Leg wear? Do you prefer tights, thigh highs, knee length?
Tights or knee highs; I don't have the legs for thigh highs. I've been looking into crew length/ankle socks for a more sportier look.

> What's better: loafers or will any preppy shoe style work for you?
Loafers are a classic, but kinda uncomfortable (at least the ones I've found). I go for oxfords and classic sneakers instead (Adidas Superstar, Puma GV's, etc.)

> Your skirts: plaid or solid? Cardigan or blazer?
Skirts: Both! (more coords to make from!) Cardigan or Blazer: Blazers for cooler weather, Cardigans for warmer times. ATM it's just lighweight cotton knits or a fitted polo.

> Any certain hairstyles you fall on when you're wearing it? I play with my bangs a little bit, but otherwise I just do a simple ponytail or comb.

> Where do you wear it? Is it your uni. wear, con only, daily...?
When I'm not at work, which is ironic since I work at a call center.

> And where are your favorite places to shop? Obviously there is bodyline, ebay, thrifting...but do you also wait until things pop up on y!jp auctions to get more authentic things?
I often thrift for things like blouses, knits, socks etc.: Fairly plain-looking stuff you can find anywhere. For more unique pieces I go on taobao or rakuten.

>What do you think are nanchatte faux pas?
Like>>8505113 said, showing off the girls is a cardinal sin in Nanchatte. Also, putting on high heels; it just screams porn star.

>What makes an outfit not nanchatte to you?
I think length and silhouette plays a part in it. A too short and pleated skirt looks costumey, but a long A-line with other seifuku pieces is just a regular office outfit to me

>How do you judge balance in a coord?
Most seifuku coords are fairly easy to put together, so I look at fit and accesories.

>Favourite and worst things in the fashion?
Favorite: The versatility. How just simple pieces like a sweater and skirt can look so cute together if you put them in just the right way!
Worst: It's surprisingly hard to find a simple button-up blouse without buying from Japan or something.

I disagree with this bit, generic heels are a no I think but elegant heeled court shoes etc can be a nice way of adding a more mature look. You could look at uniforms from the colder areas of Japan for inspiration. Do yourself a favor and get yourself a pair of these: http://www.warmlegwear.com/tights/wool-tights.html

Sorry the site looks a little sketch but I've bought tights from there before and they are a godsend in the winter. If you live in the us/Canada and buy $35 or more you get free shipping. You'll reach that if you order two pairs of tights. They do run a little small though, so go by the larger of your two measurements when sizing. So if you fit the weight restrictions of the small but you're tall enough for the medium, get the medium instead and vice versa.

Mine lasted me most of the winter, except for a few days where it was too cold to do anything but wear my warmest, ugliest clothes. I'll probably get another pair this year.

not to be a fun sucker but I would say these are the only way to use pastels/brights in nanchatte/preppy. Unless you're purposely trying to look cheap and costumey. I feel like the point of nanchatte is to look clean and preppy/academic, and if you make it too pastel and cutesy it comes off more like a cosplay.

if you're really really desperate to use those tacky pastel tumblr seifuku, I would go with this look >>8509522 and even then I'd probably try to tone it down with a cardigan or something.

but this could all just be my own personal opinion, I'm not sure if nanchatte has any actual style rules and I didn't invent the style so take my opinions with a grain of salt.

There are ways to make it not scream schoolgirl fetish costume, actually we should probably stick a section in the guide about it if we end up making one. Basically stay away from tartan and ties; solid skirts and plaids in patterns like brown and gray move it more into nanchatte. Use bows and ribbon ties as those are rarely (if ever?) seen in school uniforms in america, same with sailor collars. The baggy cardigan look is more uniquely japanese too, whereas blazers are more common in actual uniforms.

And I think if nanchatte moved into a professor-Student type dress, I think that will suit more mature looking ladies, or people who want to look professional.

This. Nanchatte can look good on anyone in their 20's, you don't have to be pedobait to wear it or make it look like an ageplay fetish. Just avoid the cliches of a fetish costume like a see-through white tight-fitting blouse, a generic cheap-looking red tartan skirt and white kneesocks.

And for the love of god people should ban those tumblrcore galaxy print sailor fukus and cosplay-looking pastel wigs with nanchatte. That shit should be illegal.

About red tartan, is there a way to make it work in nanchatte? Or will it look like a prostitute in training no matter what?

I've got lots of neutral coloured cardigans and the skirt reaches to halfway down my thighs. I bought it (and a matching ribbon) because I though it would be cute for days when I feel gaudy, but if it screams 'sexy schoolgirl costume', I'd rather not wear it. Pic related.

Its about the length, not the plaid and your other styling. Don't dress like a halloween schoolgirl reject and you should be fine.

No belly shirts or otherwise obscenely tight fitting tops. No stripper make-up. You're already wearing a ribbon which helps set you apart...

You know when you look in a mirror what is appropriate for daytime wear - after all, despite that these girls hike their skirts up over knee length, they still look like they'd be allowed in a school (everyone aside from the pastel seifukus). Use your good judgment.

I bought a bow tie off of Ebay not expecting much, but the quality of the fabric was even worse than I had hoped. Can anybody recommend places to buy one of these of decent quality? By decent I mean the lowest quality I'd be okay with is the shitty super shiny satin that a lot of Chinese sellers use.

Alternatively: could anybody point me in the direction of making one myself? I figured that that way I'd have more control over what fabric it uses.

>> No.8565659

>>8565616
It depends on what you mean by white stripes. If you mean two vertical lines on the side, and it matches your outfit color-wise, it should. If by white stripes you mean the argyle print, it will even more so. If you mean horizontal striped socks thick or thin along the sock, then it's much more tricky and heavily depends on the rest of your outfit. Calling it akiba-inspired nanchatte would be better simply because it's so loud and different. Though if it's only the top band, it makes no difference.

Hmm...well there is a general jfashion community that I know of (if you live in Kansas) and one of the owners is into nanchatte so the meet we had was tailored towards that.

Anyway, meetups would probably be things schoolkids do. Shopping, visiting various cafes downtown and wandering, going to bakeries, etc. Karaoke and arcade/amusement park visits were on the table as well. I guess since uniforms are more versatile than lolita, you can technically do anything for your meets.

Anon, if you do start it, where do you live? Where you're at and what is actually around can keep people from actually showing up even if they show interest (obviously) - that's what's wrong with my comm. No one wants to really participate despite always rsvping and shit.

Agreed. Look at Burberry, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, and all these other name brands capitalizing on the school uniform look for their womens wear. Even their models, though young, don't look like children/pedo bait in the fashion. A lot of them are considered "classy" brands too, so it's not as though they look like fetish costumes either. It's all about the way your look is styled and how you carry yourself in it.

What color of skirt would be best to coordinate a red cardigan like this with?

I love your slate/yellow colour coordination - it feels unconventional, but somehow works really well! I think a looser cardigan would look better, though.

I'd say some kind of off-white.
Ivory, peach, cream.

I would go with peach or grey since white would make it look to Christmas-ish

Newb to this fashion. Just wondering what some of your favorite white blouses were and where you bought them? I don't want to buy any old white blouse and it fit odd for the overall feel, or be crappy quality if I get it offline.

Literally just buy from school stores - online or irl. Its a uniform fashion, shop in uniform stores. A bunch of my shirts came from French Toast but I also bought a couple from Conomi.

I have that bodyline bow tie and it feels nice, but man it's so fucking long/loose. I know that's the style to wear with an open collar, but I wish you could tighten it to look better with the buttons done up.

I actually prefer the shitty cheap ones I got off ae because they fit better.

sorry to ask her but its about seifuku more than art and so I suppose this thread would be the best to ask.

I'm doing character designs for girls based off dessert food and they are all going to be wearing similar uniforms with just things like fit and colour changed.

For carrot cake I was going to do a lightish orange skirt because you know, carrots, but I also wanted her character to be a more 'play to the rules' type so I wanted her uniform to look fairly standard or at least one you could actually imagine a school having. But with the block colours down I think it looks wrong, I like the yellow for the cardi but I don't know what to do to make the skirt better, Maybe I was thinking a darker brown but then it might lose the carrot cake esque feel.

>donut there just so you have an idea of how the skirt looks like with the plaid and what it will look like almost finished.

Orange with brown stripped plaid? That could work

I guess you could also modify lolita by not wearing a petti because your ass is fat enough already or not wearing a blouse because they don't flatter your body. But don't complain if people don't think you're wearing lolita.
