If you do it in a non-busy area it's often fine.
A friend of mine was using one at LSCC in a corner of the hall for an entire day and nobody ever asked him to stop.
I don't really see the point in them though, inside a hall is not really that interesting of a backdrop. That and someone is bound to trip on it and/or knock it over.

It's actually a serious legal problem for conventions. If you get away with using one consider yourself to have lucked out, don't think of it as being 'fine'. All it takes is for one stand to fall over or one cable to trip some kid up and the shit hits the fan big time.

But you're also right that the inside of convention locations usually isn't worth shooting and putting a speedlight on a stand isn't going to fix that. I have to question why anybody is using a flash on the con floor to begin with. You can't do anything creative with it, if you could the area will still look like a shitty con floor anyway and no convention is dark enough to need flash for the purposes of exposure either.

No JNig actually does spend a lot of her money on her family and her parents are part of the business. Her dad organises all her photoshoots and she's taken them on holidays a bunch of times. KJ just takes, plain and simple. Even little things like she doesn't get her own food and drink when she's at a con she relies on everybody else in the cosplay area to have brought something. I've heard the main reason Laura and Ben barely talk to her now is they got tired of KJ not paying her way like she wouldn't even buy a round in the Fox at MCM. In the grand scheme of things Kitacon is a fun weekend although Kitacon has developed into more of a party con.

So while most people will have fun at Kita it doesn't cater perfectly for pretty much any demographic in the same way say Ayacon did.

The final Ayacon is the benchmark for UK cons to beat and nothing is really coming close. Although Amecon next year at Warrick might have a shot at achieving some of that glory.

What makes kitacon fun apart from hanging with friends?

Kita masquerade was pretty poor and half empty. No one got a lot of applause except a girl who almost fell off the stage because she thought wearing a blindfold was a good idea.

I've spent the afternoon sleeping in my room. None of the panels interest me, so I've either been there or the games room.
