Nop. Until the 19th century obi were worn front or back, actually the only person who wore them in the back was those who did manual work. I'm sure there's a rhyme and reason behind how the patterns, colors and textures go together and what you're "supposed" to wear in each season. I'm saying this in awe of how they put together these different items that a westerner would say 'clashes' but then taken together it all looks so luxe. I think that's what impresses me so much, is this treads the line of art/fashion. It's always telling to see a western person's reaction to a combo like >>8492690 or >>8491869

Yeah, kimono coordination is the tricky part. I've got a few basics charts from Utsukushii kimono to help with colors, and there are lists on the internet (I guess the kimonolady blog cary one) with patterns, fabrics and colors matching by season. Few new them entirely though, and while being complex seasonal is super chic opting for a simpler outfit with all seasons patterns is way safer.

Exactly. Wear it with respect, even if experimenting, and I don't think there's anything wrong with it. The mentality of "you're not Japanese, you can't wear it!" is a slippery slope. One could argue, conversely, you should only wear the fashion of your culture, meaning a Japanese individual would only have to wear kimono, not Western dress. Fashion, all over the world, appropriates styles from other cultures. Western fashion has everything from mandarin collars to sari prints on non-traditional clothing and it's rarely seen as an issue, just as you don't see people going around saying, "cultural appropriation" every time a Japanese person walks around in Western clothes.

It's all essentially measuring out different rectangles of fabric, with the angle of the collar only being cut after the basic construction of the garment is done.

I love ichimastu for obi, but it's hard to come by strangely enough. I also like modern stuff like stripes and gingham. I'm not found of traditional flower arrangement a la kaga-yuzen, but I love old abstract patterns and indian fabric.

>Favourite colors
I like black and deep natural colors, nothing too flashy. Too much pink is killing it for me.

>Socks or nothing ?
Socks all the way. I don't like showing my feet and there is plenty of cute tabi around to complement my outfits. Actually I need a bunch of them, it's one of my main shopping goal for next trip to Japan.

> Zori or getas ?
None. Well, zori I guess but honestly they're my least favourite part of a kimono outfit. They're not really comfortable or easy to deal with. I guess I need to find the fun in them. Maybe by changing the hanao ?

Basically you need about 5 meters of.

For the back you will cut out two panels that are 32 cm wide and 160 cm long. For the back where the two panels will join cut out a little rectangle 9x2cm.

For the front cut out two rectangles that are 23x160 cm.

For the sleeves you will need two that are 39x50cm. And for the Okumi two rectangles with right triangles on the top that are 15x80 with the triangle being 63cm and the c side being a straight line at a 45 degree angle. The collar is 5.5x47cm

Then you just see the parts together with .8cm seam allowances. It's honestly pretty easy. The fabric looks like cotton in the pictures.

No, people wear it as day to day clothes too, ranging from young women to old ladies.

Last month's Kera magazine included 6 pages of yukatas, all being 'fashionable' styles. I showed a few middle aged ladies this and they were really interested and excited, one even talking to me about being careful that nothing 'pop's out by wearing a slip underneath and such.

From the Japanese people I've met so far, they're really happy to share their culture with others. There's places you can buy yukata at supermarkets, department stores.. And there's even places where you can hire (I haven't seen in Tokyo yet but saw this in Kyoto).

Kimono and yukata designers SAY that they like everyone to wear kimono, experiment, use and restyle, keep them alive and really part of fashion. I'm going to go with that.

Where do I wear them in summer? To cocktail parties, street fairs, a BBQ party and every July 4th to see fireworks. And I live in a southern US state and am tall and blonde. When I have posted my photos, my Japanese friends are really happy I wear them and say so and have actually PM'd auction and sale links for me to buy more. I do.

Woven socks that fasten with kimono, bare feet and a decorative pedicure with yukata unless wearing it kimono style, then I like embriodered tabi or the more wild stretchy fashion type.
>> Zori or getas ?
Geta for sure. I don't like zori much at all, even the pretty shoe and purse sets. I like quirky western shoes, rocking horse shoes or Tokyo boppers and I want some okobo.

Depends how active you could be, how knowledgable you are in kitsuke to answer questions, how good you are at people and group management, and how good you are at website care taking when things break. Also those kinds of sites take a lot of storage space for the photos and periodic maintainance as the forum software updates. I do miss the IG forum site being active, even though I'm mostly just a lurker. I hate the way facebook groups handle search, topics and discussions, and photo compression.

Depending on the product you're going for, nay, it's midrange. I mean thest things are priced like a dress mostly. You can have low price ones in department stores for 30$ or pay big money (500+) for big name designer thing. All in all it's regular j-fashion price range. It's just that yukata are some glorified bathrobes, so 120$ is too much for me.

Most ready-made yukata and instructions for making one are just one standard size. You adjust length by a bigger or smaller oshare and width by how you wrap and any padding underneath. I think a yukata works for almost any outdoor summer festival-type event. As long as you have a clean face, tie or pin your hair up and light makeup it should be fine. And don't wear the wrong way around. Always your left side over right from your perspective. What makes weeaboos stand out is wearing right flap over left(reserved for corpses in funerals), unironed wrinkled fabric, frayed scraggly hair and a pasty blemished face. If you have big boobs, wrap towels around your waist to flatten the silhouette so they don't hang over the belt.

I live in Japan (not as a tourist, as an actual resident) and I thoroughly disagree. As long as you look up a video and wear it properly, wearing yukata and kimono out and about normally is completely fine. I see Japanese people going about daily business in wafuku DAILY. I don't see a lot of foreigners so I can't attest to if they'd wear wafuku as normal clothes, but I've seen plenty of foreigners in yukata at festivals (myself included) and they are always well loved and complimented.

Are even maiko and geisha "sacred", though? It's practically Halloween costume material over here and it's not religious like a shrine maiden. I get what you mean- for example "Maiko henshin" is incredibly popular in Kyoto, basically a normal girl paying to be dressed up as a maiko for a day and walk around taking photos. Its totally normal for Japanese people. Honestly, Japanese people are really laid back about sharing their culture. I asked my boyfriend (Japanese) all the same questions as that one youtube video and he agreed with everything the guy in the video said.

Japanese/Asian-americans and Americans need to calm the fuck down about a culture that isn't even theirs to police.

Placed an order for a yukata through aliexpress. Got a nice deal for the whole pack (yukata+obi&geta set).
In a month I will get to try it on. I'm only going to wear it at cons and maybe at some approriate festivals if I find any. But these are just so pretty that I just need to have one.
Fashion is for having fun after all.

Came here expecting comments like this. Was not disappointed.

Speak to the majority of traditional kimono producers and they will all be VERY happy to have foreigners wearing kimono. Speak to the majority of ACTUAL Japanese people (not "Japanese-American" who haven't actually grown up in Japan) and they will be VERY happy to have foreigners taking an interest in their kimono.
This ridiculous "cultural appropriation" shaming is so horrible because it doesn't actually represent the opinions of those who are supposedly meant to be offended by it. At all.

i'm 41cm shoulders, 98cm bust, 77cm waist 94cm hips 155cm tall...sports bra takes me down 3cm

i want to know whether i'll look like a dumb blob in a yukata or i'll actually look cute...can i request photos of not-skinny but not-obese girls in wafuku?

and please for fucks sake dont turn it into a fat acceptance/shaming tumblr argument, i just want to better visualise how i'll look like in a yukata

im not really into the idea of binding because back fat+shoulders can't be binded and the point of wearing yukata is to stay cool in summer while having fun at the matsuri (32 celsius high humidity here)

yea uhm wafuku kamisamas of cgl please...post pics of not-so-skinny but not like superassMcBurgerobese girls in wafuku?? because i have so much faith in the resourcefulness of cgl h-heh

You have to keep in mind that yukata have standard sizes for japanese people, and most japanese people aren't fat. So, most likely a yukata won't fit. You may consider making a yukata for your size rather than buying one. I haven't' seen fat people waering yukata, but from what I gather it can look flattering since the general idea is to alongate the silhouete.

Apologies for the shitty pic, but here's my yukata from the Otakon Matsuri. I don't consider myself fat, but I'm by no means skinny. My waist is 78 cm and my bust and hip are slightly bigger, but not by much (I have an apple shape).

So your waist isn't really that big but the problem here will be your boobs and hips. At some point, you'll either end up with "kimono boob" which is a faux paus OR you'll have to pad out to get the shapeless cylinder and that will make you much larger looking.

I agree that yukata are about staying cool, but with your measurements it's going to boil down to either wearing the yukata and dealing with the problems that could arise from your measurements (if you don't pad and bind), or not wearing one. You might be more suited to actual kimono than yukata. Also, idk about anyone else but I have never found yukata to be all that cool. Maybe around your legs if you catch a breeze but being wrapped up like a sushi roll, even a cotton one, is still a bit uncomfortable and makes me sweat a ton around my waist.

I don't think my comment really helps you find a solution, and I apologize for that, but yukata aren't magically cute or magically cooling. It's really about how you decide to wear it. If you're skeptical, get a really inexpensive one to try it out and worst case, it can be a lounge robe.

You are wrong.

The reason they aren't as much anymore is due to two large historical events which have led to Japan becoming quite western.
The first was obviously the opening of the ports in the 19th century with lots of European (especially English) culture flowing into the country.
The second one was the end of world war two and the Americanization that set in as a direct result.
An apt comparison would be the BDR, albeit with much less severity than in Japan.

I suggest you read some actual literature, particularly Dazai's last two novels, they give quite the insight into post-WW2 Japan and the way the war and the occupation changed it.

Think about how Kazuko in Shayou would almost certainly favor western clothing over the traditional attire.

Think about Yozo in that communist "book club" of his and how they would fashion themselves after the Chinese who, under Mao, in turn abolished their traditional dress in favor of western, Russian clothes.

I also read something really interesting, I think it was in Dalby's book. Kimono was on it's decline in the 70's, and then the great Kobe earthquake. Housewives died by dozen trapped in their houses, and there were images going around of dead women exposed due to the kimono coming loose. Dalby explain that it was a huge thing for most japanese women at that time, thus they refrained even more from wearing kimono or changing back to yukata once home.

Hey guys, I apologize if this sounds noob, but I'm interested in cosplay picture related-
Can you guys give me the appropriate names for the articles of layers so I can start search for patterns?
The top looks like a basic red kimono to me, but I'm not sure if the item around her waist is an obi or something else, along with the name of the pleated skirt.

It's just a yukata (yukata literally means bathing clothes btw), these are usually worn as pjs and after bathing when you stay at a Ryokan.
