Full of tutorials, links, and helpful info for Homestuck cosplays. If you need any help for Homestuck cosplays, refer to it first. Any contributions are welcomed.

Let's discuss:
> Do you prefer gradient or block styled colors for troll horns?
> What are your thoughts on wearing official shirts from Whatpumpkin for God Tier outfits when applicable, such as for Princes or Knights?

At the peak of the "BUCKETS=SEX!!!1!!1" craze, a group of troll cosplayers were at a restaurant when someone pulled out a bucket and passed it around. Like I get this weird nostalgic/sad feel when I think about how huge Homestuck really was 3 years ago,
it was literally everywhere on tumblr. Shit, I remember when I used to watch Octopimp's animation;voiceacting videos religiously and really badly wanting to attend an sdstuck meet. Now that it's really died down, its weird seeing all the artists that I used to follow on tumblr who were super popular for their homestuck fanart/au designs have moved on to other things/go back to drawing anime or disappear/no longer upload. I feel it's also the same with cosplayers, many gained their popularity popular because of homestuck.

Kind of, but locally I still find that we're in a high of sorts, if that makes sense? I just caught the tail of the fandom at it's height (which was a bit later here than in the US) and ended up hosting a ~100 person meetup more or less by accident in 2013. Since then I've been absolutely engulfed in the community.
Our local community is still fairly active. We're still gaining members and at this year's con-of-the-year we (me + a few moderators) will be attending in role of hosting events, workshops etc. as part of the con. We also had a big meetup this halloween and a few medium sized after that. I think that active moderators is key to keeping the community alive and thriving. Or just in general people who pave way for others to participate. I've some great mods with me and I personally plan on doing this for a while.

It's pretty okay really. We let young teens be young teens but we also have a lot of older fans keeping an eye on them. Our rules are pretty forgiving and the only thing we actively control is that we've asked people to keep buckets out of the photoshoots. If you just dismiss the fandom as "crazy" and avoid it it won't exactly get saner.

I agree, I think a lot of us are jaded because we remember the golden age when homestuck was all-consuming with new content and cosplays. But when you compare homestuck to literally any other fandom out there right now, we are still at the top of the food chain at many cons. Our photoshoots are the biggest, and the fact that some communities even still have meetups outside of cons shows it's still popular.

I think swedes are pretty modest, really. We never really had any problems within the comm and the rules we have are mostly about advertising and spoilers in the facebook group, and a few "in case of"-rules to cover our asses. The instances which have caused legit concern on our part have been a known creep hiding in the group, a few bucket jokes and some debates gone overboard. I can't recall having seen any games of spin the Faygo or anything of the sort either, so we don't really need a lot of regulations and rules. Let fourteen year olds be fourteen year olds and as long as noone is creeping on them it's fine.

I'm just going to pop in here super late and say my comm is the quietest its ever been, but not in an unactive way? There's still 100ish people showing up at big cons. I mean, that's a far cry from the 400+ that showed up to Anime North in 2012, but we're not dead yet.
Most of the troublesome kids have wandered off, the drama starters are now 'ex homestucks' who look down on the comm like once upon a time they weren't smearing grey all over themselves and sucking back faygo.

It's so weird to think that 3 years back there was sexual assault accusations, horror stories about 13 year olds getting touched on in closets... And now the most drama I have to deal with is some teenage old girl being a rude little fuck to other members without reason?

I mean, Torontostuck is far from perfect. But it's been ages since I've had to break up a 'spin the faygo' or yell at someone to keep their pants on. They're all pretty good kids and they've started to actually look out for each other? I'm proud of my little shits tbh.

and man, I know this post totally outs who i am, but whatever. I'll jump at any excuse to gush about my gaggle of nerds.

I have so many mixed feelings right now when it comes to Homestuck fandom dying down. On one hand, all the fad kids have moved on to the next thing, and we're being left with a more mature, tight knit fandom of people who will be fans for years to come. The cosplays will be more rare and well done, and it'll be a nostalgic throw back to see them.
At the same time, watching it slowly die down is so painful. I still have a small group of Homestuck friends, and I still get to talk about it and enjoy it with them from time to time, but there's no longer the internet wide excitement of a new upd8, no longer the hours of chatting about theories and ideas and ships. I'll miss this crazy fandom.

I'm a part of various comms up and down the east cost and an admin of my first one. Said first one I joined after a year of being the only Homestuck around (and none of my friends willing to read it).
My first meet up was at the end of 2012 and it was a pretty huge one, 200-300 people apparently came through out the day. Now they tend to be more like 20-50 ish. The maturity varies a lot at them...
CTstuck has tbh been the worst of them. I went to 2 meet ups before I decided to never go back because a lot of them covered themselves in fake blood and scream about how they have Ebola... Not my crowd.

You americans and your fancy acronyms.
Anyway, our cons are tiny in comparsion to yours. Our biggest con is like 7000 attendees and 60-70 Homestucks going to the shoot this year. Smaller cons (around 1k at most) there might be a dozen or so.

Katsu was my first barstuck this year, and while I met a lot of people that I've now seen at other cons, I still wouldn't call myself part of any crew. I do most of my travelling alone, I just like to visit and chitchat.

It's a pretty good split in Toronto. We've got young kids just starting, but a lot of 18+ people too. There are whole bunch of 'mods' but the only super active two are myself (24) and a 16 year old girl who is very good with the younger crowd.
I'd say our oldest members would be a married couple in their 30s who are always a pleasure to have. They help out any way they can and are always sweet.

Though, we do have a 14ish year old autistic kid who comes with their parents now, and the mother is into Homestuck as well and cosplays too sometimes.

Picture related, that's the mom on the far right. She tried, it was cute. It's just really nice that the family is actually trying to be involved with their kid's hobby. Supportive like whoa.

Probably about 60% above 18 now, for the 'usual crowd'. A lot of them have been in the fandom for years, so i've gotten to watch them go from no wigs and smeared paint, to well done cosplays.

We always get an influx of young kids at bigger cons (Anime North, MTCC, Fanexpo), but the usual group knows their shit and are well behaved.

We just had the annual summer picnic about a week or so ago? Went well, everyone brought pot luck lunch, chilled in the park with blankets on the grass, some went swimming. No problems.

At cons myself and the other girl run photoshoots at the usual times (6:12, 4:13), everyone gathers the new kids as they see them, I make little cards with the group and shoot rules to hand out... i'll post those when I get home from work if you want c:

I wouldn't say CBC's crew is that huge but that depends on what you consider their crew too. From personal experience, East coast homestucks are a pretty tight web and every time I meet someone new, we usually have a few mutual friends. CBC are also pretty chill people from my perspective and usually if you yourself are chill then it's not that hard just to talk to them. So I guess if you're going off by who they're talking to or hanging out with then it probably would seem like the barstuck is just CBC. Then again, I can't say for this past Katsu since I decided to forgo barstuck.

Here you go! These are the basic little cards I give out, along with other usual toronto homestucks. I kind of just, give each of the usuals a stack of them at bigger cons, and they distribute them for me most of the time. Like I said, good kids.

We're pretty strict about our rules, but every single one exists because there's been an issue with it. And I mean that.

They're also the sort of group that when they don't understand why I break up the spin the faygo circles, they ask me to explain, and they listen. at MTCC this year I actually got to sit down with a good sized group of them and chitchat, answer questions and whatnot. It was really helpful to them to actually have the concerns and stuff explained to them in a relaxed group environment. It kind of sunk in a little better, I think. .

I've been mostly lurking cgl for about the past 3 or so years to keep an eye on my guys. There was a point where the kids used to post each other on here to start shit, and I kind of took it upon myself to stop that, get everyone to play nice. It worked, seeing as there's been no Torontostuck cgl drama in ages.

Everything aside, kidbunni (the Dave props guy) isn't too terrible in his overall cosplay. I think one main thing he needs to look into is learning how to contour stubble away (ie counteract the blue-green tone in his jaw area) because that's the biggest illusion-breaker. I appreciate that he tried to go for accuracy in Dave's fluffy head of hair, but the wig might be more flattering on him if he took some volume off the sides.

Rustoleum has a metallic line that includes purple. I think Montana does too. You'd probably still need to hit it with a couple clear gloss coats to finish though.

And before you paint, sand that thing within an inch of its life. Like starting at 120 grit and working your way to 600-800 grit like they use on actual car bodies. After you prime it with whatever, probably want to throw down a few coats of automotive primer so you can sand it to teflon level smoothness.

If you're going to use insulation foam as your base, I might recommend getting a thin sheet, cutting out the gun shape twice and sandwiching a piece of foamcore board in between for stability. That pink foam can be treacherous. Paper mache can add some stiffness, but you just wanna make sure that thing is rock-solid. But whichever you decide, once it's covered (with multiple layers, not just a single layer), give it numerous (read: 8+) coats of sandable gesso. (Bondo can work, but it's heavy and can crack and chunk off) Paper mache can be sandable (and in fact you should sand it before you gesso it), but it won't achieve the level of smoothness you'll need. Then several coats of primer, sanding between each one. Then paint.

>> No.8519190

>>8519013
Fragile? Not really, depending on the thickness. It can bend, but with that layer of foam between two thick layers of posterboard, it doesn't break easily. And really, it's there to provide stability and rigidity. Because pink foam can snap like a twig if not reinforced.

But if you've already cut out your shape, then nvrmind. I wasn't suggesting you split it, but rather get a piece that was half the thickness you have currently, so you could glue the layers together with a piece of foamcore between them.

>> No.8519362

If anon does at least a couple layers of paper mache they should be ok. If theyre really concerned they could embed some thin rods or dowels into the foam under the mache. What I find that works well, is white eyeliner. Even the cheap Elf brand works well. What you want to do is draw over your eyebrows with your eyeliner, then use a brush to get out those unwanted chunks. Then you just go over with whatever eyeshadow and bam. Anime.

I have very dark brown hair, and my eyebrows can get pretty thick when I don't tend to them, so I had this same problem a few years ago when I first got into cosplay.

Much more durable than just using water and imo allows for more consistent build up in layers since you aren't just patting water back across your skin to weaken your first coat of paint when you apply your second. We had AN, as usual. Torontostuck Annual Picnic in mid July, I know a few homestucks ended up hanging out together at APOP, but there was no official meet. ConBravo is almost always barren for homestucks, and I was at Otakon, so I didn't bother to set anything up for that.
Unplugged sucked, as per usual, so no meet there.

I recently set up the usual FanExpo hangout that goes on the whole weekend, even though I'm hitting DragonCon instead, so, I'm hoping everything will run smoothly with some of my usual helpers taking care of the group.

Most of the attendees were teenagers. The other was held in an event hall with a ticketed entrance fee and a potluck. In this case, there was a mix of adults and teens, and many people paid ahead of time.

Obviously the event hall was a bigger deal, but you have to work with your audience. If you only have a few people, or you can't collect money ahead of time, you should go somewhere that doesn't need a big investment.

IIRC tickets were $15 last year and included admission, pizza, Faygo, Sburb cake, and whatever other crap people brought in. I'd say there were about 40 or 60 people in all, which is pretty good since our usual meets only have 30 people show up. They were fun but I'm very shy and awful at dancing. Also most of the guests were underaged, if you hold an event like this you will be held responsible for them. After the prom stuff we have 18+ events, which sound fun but are really just a bunch of people I don't know well sitting around smoking hookah. Asthma sucks shit and pretty much bars me from this too.

Definitely look at the price to rent a space, and the amount of potential promgoers. For a group of 10 or so I don't think it would make sense unless the venue was very, very cheap. Also, be SURE you tell the owners of the venue that you will almost certainly have retards in unsealed grey paint. But also slap every troll cosplay before they enter, if the paint rubs on your hand tell them to fuck off.

I don't even know any bars in the area aside from dadbars and "that guy" concert venues.

Holes in the wall that typically host noise, post-punk, thrash, etc. shows. Rundown places with shows every night. Just doesn't seem like a good fit for a bunch of grey weirdos to discuss human and alien children's relationships.

Maybe try gastropubs, something with restaurants attached. If they have a private back room even better. Go on a monday, which is usually the least busy night.

I always get a kick out of these. I'm glad she's still in the fandom.

They all look really fun to hang out with. Has anyone talked to any of them or the other BNFs (present or former)?

Brit here too! I only go to northern cons and ive been around for about 2 years too, idk I really enjoyed my time at homestuck meets in 2013 and early 14, but more recently they've just been getting more and more obnoxious. I wish we had more cons with opportunities for barstucks and stuff.

I hadn't considered that, and I actually know of a possible location now. Thank you.

Spoke with fromgilbowithawesome at one point. She seemed pretty genuine, acts pretty well the same as they do online.
