I do miss the feeling I used to get at cons though when I used to actually meet people who liked the same shit, seeing people in cosplays only myself and a couple others would recognise. I miss that but it just doesn't feel the same anymore, I don't tend to meet new people and a lot of the old people I met go to different cons(i.e. Arcade). It's not worth the emotional/financial effort going to cons, the only reason I'd go would be to cosplay and I can't really afford that this year. The last con I think I was at that I enjoyed at all was last year's Kaizoku. This one was pretty shit.

what i hate about this shit too is that there's always a subset of geeks that don't fit in and seeing/hearing stuff like this only makes it worse. because Arcade is so cliquey it can be particularly bad for that. while cons are great for making a lot of people with poor social skills or a lack of access to people with common interests feel like they belong, you'll always see a lot of people on their lonesome looking depressed or otherwise not fitting in. cons tend to be very forced-positive, a lot of song and dance over not very much. if you're not with an in crowd that can be really depressing.

the average age has shifted downwards too which makes it harder again. the younger generation are probably more likely to be geeks/weebs to begin with so they probably have less difficulty with that these days. i dislike the idea of an adult con generally(and a lot of the 20-30 somethings can be much more immature than teenagers, let's face it) but it would be nice to see a con with an older audience.

gaming cons are probably a bit better for this reason, but you generally have to have a group to play board/card games with or make sure to get to all the RPG slots in time(assuming there's a game you want to play). at least in anime cons you can just kick back and go cosplay spotting or wander around a bit.

The beach party is dependant on slightly decent weather but if you like the beach go for it. Last time I was at it they had music, and some free soft drinks. I remember a sand castle competition and a few of us going for a swim. Water was fucking cold but warmed up a bit later. The beach is nice and sandy and the water is shallow. Only thing I'll say is it would be nice if they arranged a few more activities like beach volleyball or splitting a melon?

like what personally doesn't sit well with me with Declan and Arcade is that they sometimes make out Arcade to be this queer friendly NERDVANA but he's very much the archetypal well off white gay dude. i'm sure he's had his own issues with bullying in the past, but he wrote a number of articles about how great and supportive everyone has been and he's proud to be a GAYMER. he and i think his partner/friends also made some very respectability politicsy comments with regards Pride that grossed me out. people like declan have always thrown people like me under the bus.

Declan took that very personally, and a week after I let the subject drop, silently cut ties with me. When I find out why, I get really upset with that, and his response is to single me out on the Facebook page saying that I was accusing him of being "pro-rape", and basically manipulated his hordes to attack me. this is in spite of the fact that he said he hated bullying, that I'd shared close conversations with him on this and he said he was very opposed to how I was treated in the con scene.

he was obviously singling out an easy target to deflect negative attention. a couple of other feministy types were mad at Arcade for how they handled stuff like this, so eventually they "committed" to tackling these issues.

The idea is because they're not sexually attracted to you, it's okay to disrespect your boundaries. But gay guys can often reduce women(esp. black women, but that's another story) to props/objects or muses for their Diva-like personalities without any agency of their own. Being trans it's really interesting how I ended up becoming one of the girls, where things like touching each others boobs is somewhat normal. Being gay doesn't make you "one of the girls". For me it took years of HRT & socailisation to get to that point, and even though I'm attracted to women, most women still drop their guard around me in a way they might not around dudes. While I'm all for dissolving the gender binary and stuff there are still good reasons why some women are on guard against gay dudes.

I'm not saying Declan does that but there is a degree of that entitlement that often comes with being a dude and white that doesn't really go away just because you're gay. A lot of gay guys can get quite isolationist too, because they don't "need" women, and there's a small but irritating number of right wing, very staunchly anti-feminist gay guys

So while gay guys can probably be less sexist *overall*, there isn't a big difference really and some gay guys will use the fact that they're gay to get you to drop your defences, and then just treat you as a piece of meat. as a trans woman i often feel like some kind of quirky prop to gay guys.

I'm from another con committee. We're taking note but without having any details whatsoever about what actually happened it's really hard to put any measures in place to prevent it happening again. We also have no idea who the instigator was so technically they could turn up at our con and we'd never know. Hopefully Arcade will send us on details just so that we can blacklist them.

Volunteers should never be left on their own though which we've always had in place but we'll be double-checking to make sure it's implemented properly.

For the people who went to Q-con how did you get on? I forgot it was on that weekend so I'm curious what it was like.

I understand that, but there is nothing stopping them from admitting that something had occurred on the Saturday. They would be refrained from sharing what happened or who was involved, that goes without saying. But if the guards were present publicly Saturday and Sunday, they can't deny something happening.

But from what I gathered, there is nothing at all mentioning it. Every time something like this happens, other cons publicly admit there was an 'incident or accident' but that's as far as they'd say, which makes sense. But I haven't heard anything outside of this forum that makes reference to any of these events happening over the weekend.

Most cons do actually talk to each other and help out. Arcadecon is an exception. Blacklists aren't really shared cause nothing this major has ever happened I think. You can't really ban someone from a event unless they've done something wrong to that event. Now if they're under an official investigation for rape or something major at a similar con you could probably argue that the con could refuse entry until the outcome of the investigation. If no charges were placed then best you could do is just keep an eye on said person but then would it be right to spread that the guy attempted rape when no charges were placed and the full details not investigated?

It's indeed tricky. It would have to come down to arcadecon making a judgement call on whether they thought it was a serious incident and maybe just tell the committees and have them keep it to themselves. the committee could then just ask staff to shadow the culprit without say what he did as part of their black list or the committee alone could keep an eye on the person and make sure all areas were safe.

You can always ban a person from any event for any reason you so chose. There are always repercussions for doing that though, so you reasons either want to be watertight OR kept so secret that no legitimate case can be taken against you.
