Snap anything interesting? Made new friends? How about any new toys? Perhaps you got into a fight with some yellow-belts?
Also, any plans for new year? Maybe this was your first year? Your thoughts?

Share your pictures, stories, and hauls.

May everyone make it home safe. Can't wait for next year.

Seriously I wish I could find the person who turned it in and thank them. I know if it were me, I'd probably keep it or at least have second thoughts about turning it in because Eevee is my favorite Pokemon and those damn plushes can be expensive. But I totally owe that person. I wish I could tell them how much I appreciate them doing the right thing. With so many people getting shit stolen all the time at AX, it's nice to know that at least some people still care - even if it's for something small.

In all honesty, how loud were you guys and what do you mean you got charged the cleaning fee before you could even clean it?

I saw the opposite happen. There was a 30 year old hitting on a 15 year old in the arcade room. She out of nowhere asked, "How old do you think I am?" He said early 20s and she said she was 15. His excuse was that he thought she was early 20s because she could 'Talk in a very mature manner and looks mature'. He pretty much bounced after that.

>> No.8458937

If you get kicked out of a hotel, they have every right in their power to charge you for immediate cleaning fees and keep your deposit. I have no doubt that you were having a party of some sort. With the demad in rooms being as high as they are during AX, I see nothing wrong with them wanting to clean up asap and get another group into your room asap.

Don't be an asshole next time you decide to room. Im glad when hotels shut down parties and kick people out. They deserve it. There are people who are in those hotels not for the conventions and have kids. Good riddance.

Ive never stayed next to a room party, but I have been down the hall from several before and quite a few times they have been kicked out. When you sign papers to have a room you are obliged to follow their noise regulations. When you fail to do so you get what you get. I sleep pretty sound, so that has never bothered me, but there are normal people who are in hotels for business trips, family trips, and personal trips and they don't deserve to be booked next to irresponsible brats who can't hold their liquor.

No, fuck you. You supply them if you plan to be a douchebag.

Well, my roommates had people over while I was away, so I don't know how loud exactly people were being. When I came back, we had a noise complaint at about 1 am, and then I kicked everyone out of the room except my roommates. Then, 10 minutes later, it turns out we received another noise complaint so they told us to pack up our stuff and go.

I just checked today and my card was charged with an additional fee for cleaning. I have another friend who was charged too, but they cleaned everything up, so I'm not sure exactly what constitutes this fee being charged.

I'm sure they could say something like needing to send in a maid to clean and set up the room during the middle of the night instead of during their normal hours during the day. You could try and fight it, but you'll have the whole "getting kicked out" working against you.

>> No.8459033

>>8458995
They deserve it and looks like they don't deny a party.

>>8459014
You have no legal ground. When you sign the papers saying you agree to rent the room and throw you deposit down, you are agreeing to any and all small print and this includes the fine print that most hotels put down regarding having to be removed from a room for any reasons. And if it were for a party I can only see why they would do it. They don't know what kind of party you were having. I would charge extra too if I was weary of whatever the shit people dressed in costumes were up to in a hotel room and then had to clean up.

Here's a tip: Don't have a room party.

Clearly not. Unfortunately a lot of them seem to enjoy the party scene and its really pathetic to me. If you are going to party then do it at home. Don't use a hotel that someone has to clean up after you leave as an excuse to play out your frat party, I-couldn't-get-into-college, fantasies with underagers in hopes of getting laid and disturbing other guests. Its disrespectful.

I love kicked out of hotel stories. They all deserve it and if I was in a room right next to a party - luckily I never have been - I would call the desk about it. Learn your lesson and don't do it again. Grow up and party like a normal person in a bar and then go home [to the hotel] and sleep.

You do seem a bit grumpy here. Its kind of hard to find the critical mass of nerds you can party with, so people tend to embrace it when they can. I hang out with coworkers and other local friends, but they don't go as far down the rabbit hole and are mostly normals, so it is nice to be able to have fun amongst people like me. I think what you should realize is that people go to cons for different reasons, I personally go to hang out with friends and preform on panels, others like to do photoshoots and meet guests of honor, etc. What matters in the end is that people try to be courteous and as polite to each other. In the end, we are all in this together, and by that I mean giant faggots.

For people at AX, at the Japancrate stall there was this candy. Anyone know what it is called? Im sorry.. I only took a photo of the back of it to show my friend. Didn't think I would want to go and get more, but I do and I don't know what it is called. On the front of it there was an orange wheel and a star made of little pink stars. The candy is pull apart and kind soft. In the middle bottom of the front side there is also a money head.

I know it is kind of vague, but any name would be awesome. Im having no luck on google.

Maybe it's because I know Maguma. And I know some of the guys in Sweatish, and some of the other cosplayers -- but I'm just finding this hard to believe.

I know Maguma knows what a good skit looks like. Heck, I filmed his skit from Conji's Masquerade back in 2013 (back when Conji HAD a Masquerade.) I've chilled with the guy, he has good sense of what good cosplay and bad cosplay is.

Which is why this is really baffling me. How the butterfly scored a higher average over everyone else just seems unbelievable considering the pictures that are coming out and the second-hand reporting. The judges sheets and how it was counted I think needs to come out - don't need to put the judges names next to each judging form, but this just seems unbelievable.

A video of the butterfly performance really needs to come out too.

>mfw reading the shit that went down at AX Masq

This is some fucking bullshit. I knew it'd be shit when they announced buzzfeed "performing" and "judging" but not this shit.

God dammit, AX Masq is supposed to be a big masquerade, something cosplayers aspire to perform in and enjoy, not this bullshit where anyone competing in a lower division gets an easier time. I'd heard from other masq judges just how shitty the judging system was at AX, but I didn't realize it was this pants-on-head retarded.

Why not do it how other cons do it? No points. Just comments, then performance/craftsmanship judges compare entries within their ranks and give out awards appropriately. Assigning numbers or points is ridiculous when you're not sure what the rest of the show holds, or when you've got two great performances in two different ranks.

Fuck you, AX masq.

>> No.8460779

That's retarded. First off, acting for TV/film/videos is completely different than stage acting, and performance for masquerade is its own little niche in itself. There are cliches, tropes, other little things that should be avoided and never awarded, and there are things that have never been done and amazing gimmicks and prop use that should be applauded and rewarded accordingly. How dare AX say that some popular YouTubers understand that?

I've performed in masq for almost 8 years now, almost exclusively focusing on honing performance, and I've judged masq performance, too. Only a few cons make a big deal out of performance, and AX is not one of them. Performance gets shafted every time for good cosplay, and that's fine — but when you're giving out performance awards for performance ONLY, the quality of the cosplay shouldn't be taken in to account as much as the other awards.

I can't talk too much shit about this years' AX masq because I boycott the fuck out of it now (shit staffing, terrible communication, treating performers like shit, charging entry), but seriously, from what I'm hearing? AX Masq hasn't just gone down hill. It's jumped off the high dive into a huge pile of shit.

I've never liked the Novice/Intermediate/Master judging system. Then again, I got used to SDCC's judging system where they don't have those classifications.

Quite honestly, I think AX should move away from that classification system too. AX Masquerade - just because it's Anime Expo and is the largest Anime Convention in North America - should dump the hand holding to newbies and judge everyone equally like they do in SDCC. As MasqNazi says - it should be the event that Cosplayers aspire to win by working hard on their craft in lesser events. If prizes are handed out - it should be from sponsoring companies like Crunchyroll and Bushiroad.

If there are two areas AX needs to work on - Masquerade's judging system needs to be completely thrown out and redone to be actually something meaningful to win -- and it's Ticketed Events lines, because WTF why I had to wait 3½ hours in a line shared by ticket buyers for will call to get my MomoClo tickets that only took 1 minute to actually get done once I got to the will call booth.

>> No.8460814

Anyone know why they were closing large portions of the con center? That seemed like a really bad move for a con which is overly crowded as it is... There weren't really any open hallways for people to chill in because as soon as the events in that area ended the hall would close.

Also I still can't figure out if you needed a badge to get in to the convention center... It looked like people were checking at some of the doors, while other doors were wide open with no staff members manning them.
It was my first year but it seemed really badly managed for a con that takes themselves so seriously...

I don't mind putting people in appropriate classes. It's pretty fair, I'd say – new masqueraders don't have to compete with master cosplayers and masq veterans, and have a fair chance of winning their class.

But the way AX handles them, as far as I've heard, is shitty. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I heard something about "novice class points are worth more than master class points". And that's bullshit. Points are retarded. This isn't the fucking olympics; you can't put a number on whether or not a performance was good or bad, especially when you haven't had a chance to see the rest of the performances.

Performance in Masq should be judged by overall merit compared to every other entry on stage. It doesn't take that much longer to sit down and deliberate with the other judges. I've done it while judging other shows, and it's much less stressful. The people we think deserve awards get awards, and there's no bullshit during or afterwards to deal with.

The saddest part about this is that nothing in AX Masq is going to change unless enough people complain, and even then the chances of them changing are about nil.

And next year, a bunch of ignorant masses are going to enter in to compete in masquerade, not knowing what a shitshow it is between the staffing, lack of communication, terrible treatment of performers backstage, and the previously mentioned shit judging system, and they'll come out of the performance tired, upset, and swearing off Masquerade forever.

I think AX shouldn't be fair to new masqueraders. Not when it's a ticketed PAID event. Because it's a PAID event, the entertainment value for the audience has to be higher -- that means everything, from the judging, the cosplay, the stage production, needs to be at a higher standard then your usual Masquerade. That should mean that AX Masquerade should cater to Masters and Veterans who pour their heart and souls out to win and not to walk-on novices.

Basically, in a nutshell -- AX Masquerade should be in a higher class on it's own -- it shouldn't be thinking of itself as a lesser masquerade where they have to hand everyone a award. I think the quality of the Masquerade overall will be better for it.

I think so, too. Though I also think they shouldn't make it a paid event. The Masquerade performers certainly aren't getting paid; they've put in a shitton of work over a shitton of months (we usually started choreography in March for AX) to even have a chance of going up on stage and wowing the audience and judges.

Ticketing it is fine, I just don't see why they make people pay for Masq and not for AMV.

I don't mind novices participating in AX – hell, I competed novice at AX back in 2009, and it was an awesome experience. I don't think they should have their hands held, though. Judge all the novices together for the Novice Division awards. Judge everyone together for Overall awards (Runner-Up Performance overall, Best Performance, Best in Show).

It's really that fucking simple.

A few of the judges didn't make it to their judging session but the rest of the judges continued with it and the pair got perfect scores. Then, right before masq, they were told that their pair had to do a rejudging without warning during the set build. In the dark. With a cell phone light. Their score got docked several points from the previous judging for who knows what reason. I have seen these costumes up close and they are ridiculously perfect. I'll happily put my name on this post because I know how ridiculously clean and utterly gorgeous these costumes are in person and the way this was handled was just awful.

I'm also very aware of how delicate their set-up is and that the rejudging cut straight into the prop building time. They didn't have time to test anything so iirc one of the balloon poppers didn't go off correctly.

I was with them the last time they tried to stage this. There was so much care put into it and they've decided not to make a fuss about it but I'm just STUPID AMOUNTS OF UPSET over how they were treated.

It's pretty entry level in terms of competition, but the staff's organized, you get a guaranteed stage rehearsal, snacks/water/repair team backstage, backstage video and audio streams that actually work, and there's a ton of opportunities to talk to staff and give feedback during and after the con.

Would compete/judge again.

The problem with the masquerade scoring was that all classes were judged on the same scale but the higher the class, the heavier the scoring. So essentially, novice category had easier point scale which gave them a higher average score, therefore their performance was ranked higher and was considers "best in show". If they had judged all the contestants equally, without knowing if they were a novice, intermediate, or masters, then there wouldnt be this problem.

OR, if theu had just judged each category within themselves and gave a best in show in each category then we wouldnt be in this situation either. In the end, Anime Expo fucked up their judging, they announced the wrong winners, treated their contestants like shit, and screwed a lot of people over.

>> No.8462062

>>8462051
they could even be trying to game you into buying them
leave them on sale for an hour
make them "sold out" whether they actually are or not
reopen them later as a "second batch"

but knowing how much some people throw down on stuff at AX, $350 is not that crazy. you know those wall scrolls key was selling for $950? yeah, those sold out. saw a lot of people dropping hundreds of dollars on a single booth.

>> No.8462073

>> No.8462088

For some people AX is their Super Bowl. Where diehard NFL fans will spent $10,000+ on a 3-hour football game there are anime fans in similar financial circumstances who will do the same in one weekend at AX.

I admittedly debated the Premier badge but I genuinely will feel pressure to go to panels that I wouldn't normally attend I suspect.

if they did it at $275 and they want to keep those benefits they'll go for $350. once you've tasted the ability to jump panel lines and enter the hall first/early you don't want to let it go

oh man if they gave premier fans priority access to one autograph they could easily charge $500 for it. anyone who tried going for saber knows what I mean. wait, I just gave them an idea, didn't I? $500 is CHEAP for that privilege.

It's a smaller con, but I think ALA has some cool little things that set it apart. It's the con where people hand out ribbons for you to collect and you stick em onto your badge. I think at first the organizers made them for certain events, but fans started having them made on the cheap at some point.

By the end of the con if you're on the ball you can have a ribbon chain like 4 feet long kek

Sit down buddy and let me tell you the history of ribbons

> ribbons originally used at sci-fi cons to denote staff, societies, etc
> some people started making ribbons for commemorative purposes, or just for fun
> ALA's founding staff is also composed largely of members of the Los Angeles Science Fiction Society
> ribbons carry over for staff/fun purposes
> ribbons are bright, colorful, and usually shiny
> anime fans fucking love that shit

Ribbons have been around since ALA's founding, and over the years they've remained a staple of the con culture. This is just the brief run-down of ribboning culture; I could seriously go on about ribbons at length and why they haven't taken off at other conventions.

So I seriously think the whole problem with the masquerade awards is essentially they fucked up. Butterfly guy had 50 points for novice, should have won novice, but should not have trumped the 46 points from masters class.

FYI yes, butterfly guy was pretty meh tier, but there was a LOT of hand beading on his outfit that you could really only see up close. Fitting needed work, real shoes please, but theres no arguing he put work into his outfit. Definitely should not have won best in show, but maybe best in class.

>>8460877
I was actually just having a conversation with my friends about chibi masquerade. AX hasn't done it for a long time, but I really think they should, though not like they used to. Like you said, it was a very casual, anyone come up and compete sort of thing. I think they should bring back chibi masquerade, but hold it specifically for child cosplayers. we're talking 13 and below. I love child cosplayers, but when we see them at a masquerade, I always cringe a bit, cause I know they're gonna get crowd favourite and usually win SOMETHING. I do think child cosplayers could still be allowed in normal masquerade, but I think if you offer chibi masquerade as an alternative, kids in normal masquerade should be held to the same standards as everyone else.

>>8460971
Yeah, so, I'm actually one of the backstage ninja's for that group, and there was actually a wiring short while we were setting up, and I had to run back, go grab resistors, solder, and other wiring crap for them to fix backstage, in the dark, by cell phone light. All during the same time they were having their second judging. I feel real bad the second balloon didnt pop, I really wish I could have made that go smoother, but overall, we were all happy with the skit execution. The second judging is still stupid. How the hell can you not make your meetings and then hold it against the cosplayer? Stupid.
