-Day 2 Friday meet was (mostly) a success.

-Seagull meet on Saturday outside West Hall was (mostly) a success.

- Westin patio party full of booze and loudness.

-AX masquerade completely fucked the competition

-America's birthday

-Jw-Marriott requiring purple wristbands (maximum of 4 per room) for elevator.

-Linecon 2015 cancelled for Days 0-4 for badges,

-Linecon for events very real, and they were apparently not clearing

rooms in SDCC fashion.

-Weather is a cool 74/61

How was your con?
share pictures, stories, and general experiences.

Copypasta because I didnt realize the thread was kill when I was typing.
Con was great, def a solid AX.
Got a comped badge, panels went great (the LCS Roast and Tough Crowd).
My jungle juice came out great, though I got way too drunk off it.
The meetup on friday was nice, the anons were more social than usual, probably because it wasn't all tripfags (Only myself, Freeman, Meishi, Velociraptor, Space Cowboy were there of the old school crew I recall). Last year I planned it at 8:30 so it didn't conflict with the LCS, but I got caught up and it happened at the traditional time, so the old school crew was all at the panel. Small amount of spaghetti present but overall cool people, and def less cringy than the normals that go to cons.
Party scene was cool, I didn't host this year because I was sharing my room with people who had early shifts and stuff, so I didn't want to keep them up. I made it to the westin pooldeck on sat night, total sausage fest but cool vibe.
Next planned con is anime california, met a lot of cool anons last time (and Beanie Kun before he joined our secret club). We should do that again.

My third year at AX and I finally have a horror story. It was also my third year bringing my Kurisu cosplay, so somehow the situation was more funny than angering. I'm also really glad I didn't hit anyone with the explosion, if it had ruined anyone else's cosplay I would have felt so bad.

Day 0: Be autistic with friends playin Eels and Escalators. Get ticket at sanic speeds, play MtG with friends rest of day.

Day 1: No plan to go to anything, recycle Solaire cosplay from last year (didn't expect to even come this year so no time to make another one).
Spent day taking pictures and finding seagulls but being too pussy to talk to them.

Day 2: Exhibit Hall scanning and recording prices and locations. Skipped out on LWA2 because near fell asleep at the con because I was up all night due to broken sleep schedule.
Thank god I didn't cosplay because three soliares in same room.

Day 3: Buy the stuff I want, Mega64 Panel was best part for me (mfw know the guy in horsehead mask)

Day 4: Didn't plan on going but went because friend didn't want to be lonely and had lunch @ Curry House. tfw Little Tokyo had better deals on nendroids than all of AX.

Comments: Not the best AX, probably not coming for a few years because probable new job conflicts.

>While getting gas much later on, notice that after the idiot drove off the fucking curb my rear bumper is partially falling off on the right side and the mounting holes to the frame are stripped. Rear bumper is flapping in the wind.
>Friend mentions he guesses he'll pay for it, but makes so little money at his job it'll take him a while to pay it back.
>He goes to sleep and has not mentioned it since, refuses to talk about it.

My mistake about the hotel room: free rooming, but the problem is that you're going to be sharing with others as well, but still.

I get conflicting feelings about AX ending. I get the post-con blues, it's nice to see old friends, meet new people, and just have a bunch of exhausting fun. Then it ends and I everything goes back.
On the positive side, all these weebs leave LA and I can go back to my regular sushi place in Little Toyko without it being swamped.

Still, looking forward to next year. Will definitely cosplay next time.

The party at the Westin was crazy

They had some weeaboo black magic initiation shit going on
They made me get on my knees, take off my shirt, stamped my chest, poured liquor down my throat, then sprayed me with something.
Shit was pretty cool

What a weekend! Flew by way faster than I expected and I barely saw half of the people I normally do.

-Room mates were awesome as always
-Kill la Kill event was fucking great and making new VA friends was super chill.
-Hung out at the Skullgirls Booth pretty much each day for a bit. All challenges and matches both singles and sets were won. My Reign is protected yet again.
-Beowulf cosplay was a huge success.
-Masquerade Judging was a really fun experience and I really enjoyed it. Seeing all these talented people was astounding and the A-game was really strong!
-Now to wait for SDCC.

If peeps got issues about the Masquerade, I'd love to hear them. I know some people are upset about some of the technical issues as well as the results.

Lots of sad feelings over it ending BUT we did make one handy discovery in literally the last hour that I'm gonna share with y'all:

All the other ATMs had huge slow lines and some actually ran out of cash I think.... But if you go down the stairs from South Lobby into Homestuck Hell (you know the area), then head left and left again, there's an ATM that was largely ignored and had no line. Probably because everyone who hangs out down there is too young to have a bank account.

Biggest issue with Masquerade Scoring:

From what I was told, Judges were supposed to judge by class. IE: Novice vs Novice, Masters vs Masters, etc.
So a 50 in Novice doesn't equal a 50 in masters. This was apparently said by the person running the masquerade in the post meeting.
However, it's judges by straight scoring which means a novice 50 is equal to a masters 50 in scoring.
An Intermediate won over the two winners of the masters class, and were never judges to the same level as theme because they were an intermediate.
So basically, if they keep the same system there is no reason anyone would ever want to join as a master because it basically means that you've done nothing but made your path harder. TBH, I'm impressed two masters were able to break the to 3 with that scoring system. It severely favors novice and intermediate entries.

Second Place and Third place got hosed. They should have both been moved up.

Let me explain this and I hope it makes a bit of sense.

When it came to the class judging, of course each class was against themselves. Nov v. Nov, Int v. Int, Mast v. Mast.

When it came to Best in Show SPECIFICALLY, that award became something that ANYONE could earn based on the quality of their craftsmanship and performance. It would be unfair in theory that only those in the Masters class who are supposedly more skilled than Intermediates and novices be the ones who would earn the Best in Show awards. At the end of the day, an intermediate or novice could have (and some did) executed their costumes and/or performances far better than a master competitor could. Some of the master performances were really good! Some of the Novice and Intermediate performances were ALSO really good!

As far as there being an advantage, I do not believe there is one. If you're a novice and your work is immaculate while a master's or intermediate's shows some lack of forethought, creativity, or work, why shouldn't the Novice be rewarded for their skill? (There were a few of the Novice performances that were far better synced and executed than some of the masters) Best in show is Best in show. While I wasn't too fond of a simple streamline tallying system, the teams that won deserved what they got.

You never addressed the system being unfair in that a 50 in novice was /not/ supposed to equal a 50 in masters. Regardless of explanation, if they are at their base not equal yet are judged in the end on equal grounds. Regardless of who gets the advantage, it is not an equal system.

Other than that, you're a judge. I wasn't. Just in the audience and say the costumes after (Not to the level you did, I'm sure.) But when the bes tin show is wearing street shoes with their costume while third place crafted their own footgear to batch their costumes and you say the craftsmanship of the winner was immaculate? It seems odd to me.

But again judging is subjective. I'm not saying you're wrong. Not a judge.

But we all know they are too jewsish to get the needed people for any sort of after hour stuff. We got somewhat lucky with the late night shows at some of the hotels this year. The gundam suit was really impressive, but there were a LOT of things on the inside that weren't up to snuff. The performance was funny, but most of what the mech did on stage was very minimal and it was the audio that carried most of the performance. I've seen people do much more animated mech performances. But that was my personal view on the matter.

>>8457015
I can understand that. I guess that saying "a 50 in novice is not a 50 in masters" is definitely the wrong way to word something when everyone is competing for best in show. Again, the rubric is going to be changed for next year and the judges are being consulted on it, so hopefully we can have something that is far more fair for everyone. There were a lot of issues with the grading rubric that I was not happy with and it made judging really upsetting at times because walk ons got shafted hard for it.

As far as shoes and such go, we judged on what was presented to us and what was made. But yeah, judging is subjective, and my opinions differ from that of my fellow judges as well. :0 Them's the dice.

in this case there's also the matter of a few thousand dollars.
You kind of knew this would happen, right? you didn't comment with "whoa whats all this about the masq blah blah or something" you were genuinely concerned with the reaction, which i commend you for.
but i don't think those craftsman and hobbyists are wrong in their decision not to participate again. Burning bridges with the community isn't anything new i guess.

I was a contestant (Not going to say who) and if you seriously want feedback, here it is:

1. An immediate scoring system does NOT work for craftsmanship. It has a hard ceiling that judges don't know when to hit. What if the first costume that comes in you believe deserves 50s, but then the next one is twice as good? Nowhere to go. Instead: You should do all judging, then have a judge meeting BEFORE the masquerade to score all craftsmanship having seen it all, and judging all classes on the SAME SCALE. (IE: If the best novice gets a 25, it doesn't matter. They were still the best novice. Doesn't matter if a master got 50. It should all be scored evenly.). This allows judging to still be prompt, as the crafting decisions are made before the event, however it gives a much more fair result.

2. Skit judging? Probably as you have it. If it's slightly unfair, oh well. I understand the need for promptness. But judges should be allowed to alter past skits if something absolutely wows them that comes later (Not saying they couldn't just made a note).

3. After all is said and done. There should be one last 1-10 score. Basically a Judge Alteraiton. If they feel one group was absolutely blew them away and their scores don't reflect that in context of everything written before, they can award them ten. If they feel they had good scores but it just didn't add up right, they can give them a 1. Basically it allows judges to throw in a little hindsight bias to the whole thing without taking a lot of time (Which I think is a good thing).

If you did these three things, I believe the system would work out really well.

As a judge I personally prefer the idea of coming to judging conclusions after seeing all entries (especially for performance). I prefer taking notes and discussing the aspects of each performance in greater detail after the fact. And the same went for craftsmanship judging.

I agree with your example of the ceiling. As far as this contest went, it really didn't fall on that though. very few entries came in with 10s across the board. I think only 1 or 2 people at most from all the judging had received perfect scores from me at the very least. And also, do not forget that between the 4 judges our decisions were averaged out and then applied.

Either way, the system should have some change/tweaking to it so it's more fair.

To be fair to Maguma, the scoring system was not designed by him. As a judge he has to follow the guidelines the coordinator sets out for him, and I'm sure he did what he could with that system.

And to be fair to the coordinator, I suspect this scoring system was put in place because people higher than her seem to have made it their mission to make the Masquerade as short as possible. I have heard more than once about how the judges get rushed during deliberations, and sometimes they make split-second decisions they regret later. No one makes their best decisions on the spur of the moment, yet AX expects it. I mean, would those three double awards this year have happened if they had a couple minutes to think about what they were doing? So I can understand why a scoring system was put in place. Doesn't mean I agree with it. I've been cosplaying competitively for a very long time and my closest friends have as well, and I do not know one single person who likes a judging system based solely on numerical scores.

Sure, continue using scoring sheets, but as reference only. But what is probably most important is to get it across the higher-ups on AX staff that it is important to give judges time to think after they have seen everything.

>> No.8457562

>>8457556
I've been to SDCC's Masquerade for years. The one major difference in judging systems between AX and SDCC is that SDCC is willing to give time to the judges to make their deliberations no matter how long it takes. SDCC's Masquerade has ended at 12am or even later at times because of that.

Of course, AX will never be able to do that because LOL money involved in renting Microsoft Theater.

For in-con, I set the AF to AF-S on area mode and center the AF site (assuming you focus your cosplayers in the middle.) Set AE to multi/average.

If you're doing shoots, use a fast aperture like f/2.8 or lower. If you're doing on the go shots of people in the middle of the exhibit hall, use f/4 or f/5.6 with a fast ISO like 800 so you can have some leeway in out-of-focus and still have a fast shutter speed.

Expanding on my previous posts, here's some things to note:
>White balance is CRUCIAL, as soon as you arrive to the con mess around with your WB settings until you're happy. If you go outside, make sure to adjust.
>Remember that longer focal lengths have lower depth of field. If you want to have a nice soft, out of focus effect, use longer lenses. If you want to be able to point and shoot and have a focused photo, use wide angle.
>If you find your exposure settings are usually wrong, a lot of cameras have AE bracketing, which will take 3 photos: one with +1EV, 0EV, and -1EV.
>Carry as little lenses as possible. You'll be carrying them the entire day. You won't need a 10-18mm ultrawide zoom or a 300mm f2.8, just take a wide angle zoom and you'll be good.

I find it funny there are people who do snapshots with Canon 1DX's and 24-70 f2.8's. I bought a Fuji X10 for $150 the day before con and it got me more than fine.

Off-camera flashes are a godsend. Flash gets a bad rep, but point it upwards or to the sides and bounce flash makes everything better. If you get used to it, you can bounce it to the background, giving the photo a facade of ultra high dynamic range.

I asked around for LP6 because I forgot my booklet and they stopped using guidebook for no good reason at all (probably being cheap).

Asked like 6 red vest staffers and the only place that had anyone that knew anything at all were the guys in the info/lost and found room.

Never forgetting that booklet ever again.

AX was bittersweet for me, seemed like less quality and quantity of cosplay. way too many normal people and overdone costumes. only picked up a shirt from aa and a doujin from dealers.

The panels i attended were great (Trigger, Dooger, Momotan, fakku q&a, Ayako Kawasumi and project h room [oh god])

mfw i didn't see any kuroneko, akame or yuru yuri cosplayers

Last pic for now, just a photo at the Wakfu booth after winning a raffle prize. Everyone kept getting serious pictures with the girls so I suggested "just have fun with this one". Why am I only photogenic when I'm dicking around?

Thanks everyone and anyone here who I took pictures of for making this such a fun photo safari; looking forward to seeing what you come as next year. I'll try to be back later with a few more photos but that was pretty much the cream of the crop.

I posted this morning but deleted it after I read it over, but after 12 hours sleep hope I make more sense.

Day 3
>somehow not hungover when I wake up
>go back to con but leave to get liquor
>got sold a cheap saturday badge while filling my flask
>meet some seagulls for delicious boba tea
>wander through exhibit hall together
>don't buy anything but have fun talking to people and getting introduced
>see grills from school that like me
>her bf is crossplaying miku
>get food, try to charge phone
>meet seagulls again
>have fun talking I actually think this is the time I spilled on my shirt
>focusing on not spilling spaghetti with qt blond staffer
>get backup from people who want to go to Bosshi & Toshio Maeda panel or help me
>group gets in line while I look for her
>Find her and she's excited to see me too
>my cool staffer friends are manning the line and giving out wristbands
>flirt with her while I put on her wristband
>someone asks us if she's 'the girl' and she looks to me confused
>quickly change the subject
>panel was actually pretty good and Q&A is borderline hilarity
>enough spaghetti spilled to open a chain of italian restaurants
>she's a bit uncomfortable which is weird because it was her idea
>but still laughing and having fun
>we brainstorm after what to do
>I want to party at weston but she wants to go to AX dance
>phone dying but a cool seagull loans me their energy bank
>we get in line together
>a guy and girl from the group find us in line
>drink then go into dance together
>bring group to center and dance for a bit
>lean in to ask her to dance on me
>gently pull her in front of me
>she squirms and pushes me away saying she doesn't want to
>pain and rejection but not really surprised
>lean back in and tell her it doesn't matter as long as she is having a good time
>she gets lost once and finds us but I lose her again while I'm dancing
>look for her till she sends me longest text of my life at 140

Thanks everyone tho, I'll post text if anyone wants

Basically he's the main reason why tentacle rape is such a huge genre. Jacob from Fakku even explained when he was 13 it was Maeda's works that made him into hentai.

Me and my friend got drunk as shit drinking vodka out of NOS cans before the panel and were arguing about yuri > yaoi and whether or not if the Pope has seen Mean Girls.
