The other company has responded and sent their sample, Vograce on the other hand has not made a single peep. I've messaged multiple times with multiple days in between each message. Either they are deliberately ignoring me or just unresponsive to the alibaba messages?? Anyways they're like a "pay me and I'll print whatever picture you want on an article of clothing" service. I'm sure there's a lot of legalities surrounding this kind of business model since they're selling copyrighted images on shirts like pic related and also Disney "inspired" (more like straight up disney) skater dresses. some cons don't let you sell stickers or decals because dumb people stick them on hotel or convention center property and the con has to pay the repair charges, so double check that.

Mostly, people expect decals to sell for cheap like $1 for a small one. It's definitely a more hit or miss product than sticker sheets and charms.

Mehhhh. I know a guy who runs a button making business and he even thinks its not worth it sometimes.

Like if you plan to continue doing cons a lot, you definitely will make your money back for it eventually. But you also have to consider the time it takes you to make the buttons themselves. When you outsource they just show up all ready to go, plus they're still relatively cheap.

I'd say the only super good thing owning a button machine allows you is to do convention button commissions? But if you dont care then maybe dont bother.

The button desplays I did this year were really simple and cheap to do, stacked/packed flat. I got some cheapo steel art prints/signs from michaels and covered them with white paper (or you could use magnetic whiteboard panels).... bought a bunch of rare earth magnets in bulk from china off of ebay, and voila. Made a sample of each button design that didn't have a pin in the back, and stuck it to the panel with a magnet. It was a lot less messy than using cork tiles because people are gonna pull on the display no matter what you do, at least this way the button comes right off with no damage. You just gotta periodically look over and make sure no one's shuffled your samples around. No one stole any, either!

Also made little printed logos to stick to the boards so people would immediately recognize what series they were looking at. Seemed to help a lot; had loads of people recognizing kind of otherwise generic looking characters.

The panels hung off our grid racks with clips, and packed flat in our luggage.

They are too good to be true, if you're looking to make buttons in bulk. They take a long time to make each one, the process is fiddly, and you're pretty likely to throw more parts away than you would if you got a tecre/whatever machine.

I guess if you're only looking to make a very small number of buttons for a hobby kinda thing, they're fine, but for sale production, I wouldn't recommend it.

pic related are my charms. They're 1" and I sell them for $5. I used Ink It Labs and like how they turned out, although next time I will get them with candy gloss. They don't sell very well, though. I think it's because 1) they're too small and 2) they're pretty plain and not detailed.

Roomie- put in her order a good 3 weeks before the con, keeping in mind their turnaround time (11 days or something?). Their place flooded, they weren't able to finish her charms in time, said they'd overnight it but didn't overnight it which meant she didn't get her charms in time for con (they duplicated her order and hand-delivered it, since the con was in Texas, which was good, but wouldn't have happened if they hadn't fucked up the first time). She also had an incident where she clearly communicated to them where the package was supposed to go, but they still fucked up the delivery and sent it to the wrong address.

Friend- They fucked up the coloring and pattern on my friend's charms. Like some of the character's limbs were different colors, patterns that weren't even on the original designs appeared on charms they weren't supposed to (she was doing FNAF charms- for example, for some reason they printed some stars on her Freddy charm, and her charms for Freddy, Fox, and the rabbit had oddly-colored limbs- not even shades off, but like completely different hues). She got them earlier this week so obvs. there's no way she can get them fixed in time for AX

Some other artist my roomie knows- Fucked up on delivering on-time, basically.

I know a lot of their recent mishaps have been because of flooding that happened at their headquarters, but I mean, their customers are constantly checking in and being very clear about their expectations through multiple emails explaining and confirming deadlines, delivery locations, etc.

They approached each table individually at A-kon. They just didn't bother me, just looked everything over, but I know they asked the table next to me to take down one print because it had a name on it. My table partner sells pic related, and they had to talk it over for a bit. Apparently, had he been selling them in the dealer hall, they'd make him remove them immediately, but because their Artist Alley rules are more lenient, and because technically it wasn't a trademarked logo (yet? They were ambiguous about it, but they made it sound like it could become an issue in the future) they told him he could continue selling them.

An awful lot of the symbols within their shows are copyrighted, and I'm sure if they're not, then they will be doing it soon.

I do a lot of typographic prints and stuff (pics is mine) and they do have character names. Obviously if the name is trademarked, it's a violation (and even if not, they probably have the right to ask me to remove it). So now I'm kinda like... well, this sucks. Do I try to have these at the con? Levi was my top seller last year.

It's not like I can't make other prints, but I guess that up until now my style of prints and such has leaned on character names and that will have to change. It's easier to leave names and stuff off of my drawings, but these types of typographic prints are different.

I was thinking of opening preorders and ordering two 50 charms bags from Zap (I'm EU based so it's the least worst when it comes to shipping) where I can do two times 5 designs.

I'll probably keep them one-sided since I don't know how the backs look and it pretty much makes the producing costs double the price.

That actually sounds like a nice idea too; maybe all of them in the new Marine outfits? Which is the one I drew the Umi in.

I've never printed charms before, but my friends who make charms say that most buyers think that one sided charms are the norm anyways. I believe the back of Zap charms is just solid colored acrylic

Imo double sided is cool, but since it's your first time doing charms I think you should stick with one sided to keep the costs down and to build up your reputation as a seller before selling items which would cost more.

I have heard not so favorable reviews about Zap products recently though. From what I've read, their images get printed misaligned a lot and the thickness of their acrylic varies between batches.

For me the issue is that since I'm EU based, getting my charms made outside of the EU will mean a big increase in shipping costs and even worse, import fees. Zap unfortunately is the most close company the produces charms. Inkit seems nice too, but I'll need to check how much shipping would be.

Thanks for the tips btw!

I'm getting a few new sources for charms including clear and metal ones as well as testing out some PVC/rubber keychains. I did get some metal charm samples via alibaba, but I was disappointed with the results. I did find a company that looks promising.

I'm also getting samples for things like wallscrolls, clear files, stationary, and some US places for mugs and lanyards and other things.

They don't really need exclusive copyright or trademark, though? You yourself don't have trademark rights, so even if your fanart is from the light novel instead of the anime, you still don't have the rights to distribute anything from the light novel, so funimation can ask you to take it down.

From the posts >>8446077 linked though, it seems like you just need to avoid naming the characters and avoid blatant logos. It does seem like they're doing the littlest bit possible to protect their trademark and not trying to take down fanartists, actually.

Does anyone know how to deal with sorta-kinda bootleggers? There's a girl selling "swag snapbacks" that are clearly a rip off of Anime Trash Swag's snapbacks. She kickstarted the costs for manufacturing and started cutting her prices at AX making her a literal bootlegger (you can literally buy the spiked/horned snapbacks in bulk off of aliexpress/alibaba). It's not like ATS has a copyright or anything (yet?) but I wish there was a way for people to know that these bootleggers are nothing but that and that they shouldn't be supported. Their fanbase is nowhere near as big as ATS but I also don't want it to grow...

I saw her booth at AX today and spitefully asked her if she was ATS. Fake ass bitch told me she wasn't and told me they were in the opposite direction of the actual ATS booth. As I left, I heard her table partner ask if ATS was actually here, like she was afraid of something, jfc.

Did she message anyone else directly asking them to fund her kickstarter and/or asking them to share it? Maybe it's just because I'm not into shameless self promoting, but it always rubs me the wrong way when you ask people individually for money, especially if you have to start your message with something like "I know we've never spoken", and already addressed that "I know you've seen it my kickstarter floating around on AANI". If I've already seen it, and I had no interest in donating, or even commenting or liking, what would asking me personally accomplish?

AX is FCFS, Fanime is juried, and if the selected artists cancel, the remaining tables are sold through a lottery(? Not sure if this was the case this year, but it was last year).

Have different products at different price points. Prints for $10-$15, buttons for $1-$3, stickers for $1-$5, whatever. Just have more than just one type of item. Think of a good but efficient table setup before the con. Have a good suitcase to hold your stuff. If you want to actually make sales, be sure to draw things you like and make you happy, but don't forget to look at it objectively and think, "would other people actually buy this". Too many people forget that AA is also a business, so you have get off your high horse if you're on one and try to pander to your audience a little bit. Some people pander TOO much that you can tell by looking at their art that they're just following whatever's trending. If you can't have good small talk about something a subject you've drawn, don't do it.

If you just want exposure, just do whatever you want. Lots of people just jump into AA head on.

Very quick, but I'd bump up the contrast by working in the deep purple of the background into the shadows on your bird. Then I'd bump up the contrast in the other direction by bringing even brighter highlights coming from the glowing puddi. I used a bright golden yellow with the brush set to screen mode. I selected the puddi and increased the saturation on it to make it pop, then brought some of the colors from the rest of the image in to help define its form (a low opacity purple from the bird's shadow to help round out the bottom of the puddi)

I also made your clouds in the bg asymmetrical and made one of them pass behind the bird's head to help increase depth.

Something else I'd do that I really forgot is really make the bottom of the wings softer. You don't want sharp edges on things that are a) soft and b) in motion.

tl;dr work all the colors in your image through all parts of the image, and pump up the contrast.

Tumblr has this weird tendency to fetichize fat people. "Look how cute they are! My queen!" and it's like no. Cartoon fat people are cute, but realistically where is the overhanging gut, gross flab, etc. They all self project so hard onto these cutesy drawings that they most likely can't even comprehend that if they look at their own bodies it's not very attractive. The whole thing reminds me of when people talk about how "Cute asians are! All of them are tiny and adorable!" This weird fetichizing of being a POC, w/e ethnicity and trans. I mean, good on them that it makes them feel better about themselves but don't pretend you're something you're not.

How old is this girl even?

I actually just realized this. So...tumblr is supposedly body friendly and shit. Like her Naruto self insert, they always draw cute rolly polly fat girls and scream at people who tell them to lose weight or get healthy. But I literally never see them talk about body acceptance for men. They all love their buff husbandos and beautiful anime boys (I'm getting sick of the cinnamon roll meme tbh), but none of them ever have fat or pudgy male characters (outside of Steven Universe), and if they do it's as fetishized as girls. "I love the pudge omg chubby so cute." Idk why I just realized this, there's no body positivity for men on that site. Better be a cute twink or a buff grisly dude, but regardless ur still ciss male scum.

Hey, I hope you don't mind but I did a super quick draw over with my trackpad. Sry, wish I had my tablet on me argh. You still have a few anatomy issues. So her head could still do with being a bit smaller. I extended the forarms with my amazing photoshop skills, since the anatomy is a bit off. The arm on the right, I extended down a bit, as well as lengthened the forarm. The front-most knee could do with a little bit of definition (idk something as simple as a highlight to showcase the curve). Doing this will help with the foreshortening. The feet are a tad blunt. It would really add to this if you just went in and gave a little bit of shape to where the ankle curves into the foot. Think of how manga artists do that really well. Finally, I upped the saturation, added a low opacity multiply layer and color fixed it a bit towards purple (b/c Homura). I thought this would help with what I saw as muddy colors.

I have flux on right now so idk how this all looks on a screen w/o it. Do these few things and I honestly think this will be one of the most beautful prints I've seen in a while.

Dunno if I should wait for next thread or not, but anyway. I'm thinking of selling at a doll convention next year, and I am having a problem coming up with a good display. I've got doll clothing which needs a good way to organize it so it can be browsed, small props to display, and somehow work in a few dolls actually wearing the stuff. This past year most of the artists and vendors had a very basic set up with just baskets of goods on the table and I want to be a little more efficient than that. I like the idea of the frames/corkboard for smaller stuff like >>8441707 and >>8442210 but its the clothing (which can be pretty heavy, I do a lot of full fantasy gowns) and some of the larger props that are confusing me.

I'm at such a loss here
So I can't seem to find a washi tape supplier wig a lower MOQ per design, but I did find a tale supplier that seems like it has a low MOQ, but it's all in japanese, and most likely ships only in Japan so you'll need a service like Tenso to send it to you.

Seems nice, drawbacks being its for one thing, not washi tape. Also you can only have one color on the tape. You can however choose the color of the tape and the color of the ink. Maybe do lineart type stuff or super minimalistic stuff? This is the best my research has gotten me. If anyone else has a good washi tape supplier or knows of a group order happening soon please let me (us) know ;-;

That would take up about as much room as just having the dolls themselves up. I've been trying to think up something like one of those old timey rotating clotheslines to hold packaged clothing though. The tricky thing is that almost all of them are one-off fashions, like I don't just have 7 green dresses in one size, I have a smattering of things in each size but all different fabrics and styles. So pretty much all of it has to be on the table.

When you say low opacity multiply layer, is it like a copy of the image or a solid color? I'm really old-fashioned and am not well-versed in digital art, sorry. Don't worry anon, I paint with watercolors, and the only thing I do digital is color edits, manga edits, and putting things together. All of my friends are digital artists though so I learn tricks from them.

Uhm, ok first I upped your saturation a bit using the Levels. Then I hit command + B (i'm on a macbook) and it brings up the color balance. This allows you to essentially bring out whatever underlying color you want to and boost it (Think CMYK on one end and RGB on the other) It's usually set to midtone which is what you use most. You can always mess around to see what clicking the others do. I moved your tab left more towards Magenta because I thought it could use a boost in purple. Using color balance is the easiest way to help with muddy colors or to fake knowing how to do lighting lol.

Next I just copied the layer, and then changed the layer setting to multiply. I wanted to add more depth to your piece, and then lowered the opacity of that layer to about 25% or something.

I hope that all makes sense.

"Doing artist alley" probably shouldn't be your primary criterion for choosing a school.... just find out which schools have good programs that you are interested in (animation? illustration? fashion design? etc). No school has a major in "artist alley"... and I don't think your major determines your success in artist alley, it's your skill as an artist (regardless of your focus) and as a businessperson that will have a greater effect. And neither of those things necessarily require going to an art school for the record.
