As a general volunteer we weren't given NDAs... god my memory is so bad that I can't remember. I signed something at orientation but we turned those in to staff.

Everything about volunteering this year was really unprofessional. I was under a department but I didn't have much to do until another department my friends were in were begging for my help so I switched to them. The days later I just flaked out half the time.

I was in the dealer's room sunday when they were telling volunteers that we should go to the second floor to get paid. They never took track of my hours, they said to just verify you had people to back you up about working and I'm friends with staff so I guess they verified my name on the list before I got there. It was a simple list of names, the department you were under I think, and then the amount of money your badge was (I did a group order so mine was $53). Deneice's sister opened up a register and just handed me cash.

I don't have any caps of this because nothing was told to me electronically. It was all word of mouth. I could try to fish through my emails but I don't think I'll find anything.

Tbh this probably won't help since I have no proof but I'm trying to use all the details that I remember about. If anything though, my experience shows a method of no paper trail so that could be how theyre ripping some people off.

There were some stuff like, don't go beyond this hallway (since 2 other events were booked) but there wasn't any other details really. And when we split up into departments, they told us briefly that we were supposed to sign in at the con (which lol didn't happen), and the rest of the details and hours will be given in emails/fb groups, which didn't provide much info either. I'm wondering if it was John and Deneice saying it was handled and then pulling out at the last second, and made staff freak out on you, orrrrr if they just forgot it was a thing. From girlyhoot's account, they likely forgot about the party.

Also, did you know that she was supposed to be the host of that party? I didn't know that.

>> No.8429157

>>8429140
Honestly, orignally I thought that Jess and Kate would help with hosting as they were listed as hosts on the event page. As I kinda said, I was asking a couple weeks in advance if there was anything that needed to be prepared or organized for the party and flat out didn't receive replies aside from a couple, "Let me ask ___ and get back to you."

A few days before the party I was told Zaid would help host as well. The day of I was told that it would just be me and Zaid because everyone else was busy at rehearsals.

I was told this when I parked and called asking for help carrying up the soda and chips I'd been asked to buy... and was told also that no one could be spared to help me carry up the ten 2-liter bottles of soda I'd bought... which also ended up being moot because the hotel DID provide soda and cookies.

This is also mostly complaints in organization though, which I guess is nothing new. While I suppose it's kind of annoying that I had to actively seek my refund, I did get it, so I'm not too upset over that.

What really sucks is that from how my experience volunteering was, no one had an idea what to do? Only John and Deneice had the budget/permission so when volunteers asked staff, staff had to go find them and it was just a terrible system because of miscommunication and the amount of time it takes for them to answer back. Plus whenever they changed their minds about things, which seemed to be often, the way it trickle back down just caused disaster and that's why everything seemed pretty disorganized. Your experience basically proved this as well, and it sucks but at least you got paid back for it.

I was told "Food is provided, but the hotel is charging an exorbitant amount for the basics."
This is why they wanted cheaper food to be brought from a grocery store so that we would have enough.
I don't know if that extended to food provided for the volunteers though...

>> No.8430107

To clarify on the volunteers not getting their badges reimbursed situation, you had to have worked in order to have gotten your money back. Many of the people saying they didn't get reimbursed also didn't show up for a single shift, fucking the rest of the volunteers and staff over. That's why a lot of panels were not set up before hand, things were chaotic, etc. Mind you, we were understaffed to begin with and things were chaotic already, but all the people that abandoned ship just added fuel to the fire.

On Sunday, there was a small office on the second floor where we met with Deneice's sister to get our reimbursement. They made note of whoever hadn't showed up to their shifts from what I briefly saw by looking at their roster. They had the amount you paid for your badge next to your name then gave cash in hand.

For the situation I was in, I was also considered a full time worker for the weekend and I got paid two days after the con. Decent amount, but still probably never going to do this ever again.

I volunteered for two years in different departments. I was basically not an 'important' volunteer like a head or anything, so it didn't seem like anyone higher up cared about organizing us. It was a mess both years.
Never offered crash space, although I probably wouldn't have wanted what crowded/no-security rooms they had. Paid for my own room to volunteer.
Paid for my own food, too. One year, all they had was some bread and turkey in the 'break room' which was just a room with a table and chairs in it. It was disgusting. I bought my own food. The next year, they gave us food coupons to use at the GRB food stands (ew, but better than sandwiches), but no time to go get food before they closed.
The first year, I didn't get my refund onsite. The head of my department had to mail it themselves to me, asking later via social media for my address. Yes, money straight in the mail. Very secure.
The second year, I stopped volunteering because I bought my badge at over $50, but they told me that they could only comp me for $40 max. I'd done all my hours and my head even verified it. I paid them $10 and for a hotel room to help 'volunteer' at this con. I was done with helping this con after that.

Also, heard from my friend at the maid cafe that Deneice told them they would get money from the shirt sales or that all the profit from the shirts would get split upon the cafe or something like that. My friend says that money never happened. IMHO, why even bother telling them that, lol.

It was a badge and then if you worked more hours space in a room with at least 4-5 other people. When you volunteer there are not many perks, I really don't get why there's all this outrage on this particular topic.

The profit from shirts thing sounds like total BS. Why would the maids get a cut of that? They had nothing to do with producing shirts.

Actually there was a huge issue with the food and water. GRB threw a bitchfit about AM bringing in outside food and water; they found waterbottles in the pressroom that was meant for volunteers and started talking about a breach of contract. Deneice had to go handle it and she was spewing shit about hiding the waterbottles in a different room and other stupid shit.

We had a message about going to the hotel room to get food, since we weren't allowed to bring it inside the convention center. However, with the small size of volunteers, no one really had time to go out and get food, so that's likely why they were found spoiled. Plus, with all this running around and no time, no one wanted to go to the hotel room and waste time if food wasn't actually in the room.

AM should've cleared it up earlier before the con, but this thing about food and water was mainly GRB's fault in this case.

There's a perfectly good Metroplex community that was working really hard to host some events this year, but they got screwed in the same way as a lot of people did by the scheduling department. Still, they were classy about it, held their panels, had a meetup and a swap meet- hopefully showing the convention that there is an active lolita community in the area that wants events.
My only hope is that they won't be so soured by how poorly programming was handled this year so that they do make themselves heard regarding events in the future.

How shittily AM is organized? How John and Deneice seem to spend money willy-nilly, but have zero effort to make due on what they promise their volunteers such as food? They have like zero communication with people during and after the convention. They just expect all the complainers to stop complaining after a while (after all, the next event isn't until next year) and then they get to keep all of their money without apology.

It sucks that this is happening but its really the smartest outcome they could have come up with in the Leigh camp. Pick the controversial topic that will get people up in arms on both sides to drown out discussion of the other issues.

Not to sound like a broken record but...about half of the events I've been to over the past few years have had limited translators or food issues. I hope people remember the mishandling of guests here and begin questioning when the guests are treated poorly in the future. Its the main thing that will entice more guests to visit and bring their brands to the US.

I remember in a previous thread someone discussed John being the programming director but not necessarily the "owner" of the event.

Maybe AM can make programming to attract furrys or bronies to replace the holes left by lolita. Both of those groups are cash cows to milk. Once they realize their lolita crowd is well and truly lost. It will be funny though, the 2016 con...almost no Lolitas. We should be contacting any brand that has ever come to AM and suggest alternate cons and express our unhappiness that AM is no longer a suitable venue to represent or host events relevant to the lolita aesthetic since the unfortunate events concerning John. It's just not very Rori to hang out with creepy dudes.

Seems so. No one is falsely accusing John of anything he did not do (or they'd be crying about it or sueing someone) so if his life is ruined, he should have thought of the consequences of the things he did before doing them.

Of course there is always worse but that is no reason to excuse lesser wrong-doing nor do we need to be perfect before speaking up as advocates for the rights, safety and well-being of members of our community.

JOHN LEIGH: ASSORTED COCAINE HABITS?
BY ED EDD EDISON.

Standing before me is the George R. Brown Convention Center, a site for merryment, a site for coalitions of nerdy people to congregate for 3 days once a year, and the site of bricks upon bricks of sweet nose candy?

It has recently come to the attention of our journalists that in between sexually harrasing guests, John Leigh has a bigger interest in snorting gram after gram of that decadent, delectable Columbian sugar. This was recently found out during an interview with John Leigh about the sexual harrasment allegations, during which we proceeded to take off his clothes to ask his cocaine about the last time it was snorted. While his wife couldn't be reached for comment, John Leigh was able to tell us, "FUCK YES, BABY. ROCK AND FUCKING ROLL, GET DOWN WITH THE CLOWN OR LAY DOWN MOTHERFUCKERS. GET THAT CAMERA OUT OF MY FACE." He then proceed to twist his nipples with his fingers while waving his penis like a windmill to the beat of "Wheel in the Sky" by Journey.

Only time will tell how this story develops.
