most of our stuff showed up in a plastic trashbag in a no fucks given mode. Or one sword in a cardboard box so huge it barely got through the door. And they are always sending it late.
One time they even lied about that their warehouse was robbed and they late for the shipment because of that, another member of use asked them in a different channel about that and turned out they just said it to get more time.

That said, their weapons are the best but man, the shipping and costumer service sucks. So I've decided that i will give the steampunk/dystopian larp near me a chance despite my distaste for steampunk, it does seem to be best larp nearby. So here in comes my problem. Whilst I can describe the character I wish to play very well, most of my help work off images much better, and I have horrendous drawing skills. My steampunk/dystopian expert friend is not responding, So if anyone here would be ever so kind to draw me a steampunk/dystopian elven traveler wearing a dark cloak. I know that this character would NEVER be seen with a hat, but some type of hood or cap is plausible, but should not be a permanent fixture of the costume, and it should work well both with and without such.

So Here in Greece I recently acquired some bronze greaves. I have a lot of my kit already. Although I am missing a shield. The problem is do I use a wooden one and take all the weight? Or is there some other material I can make a Greek aspis out of that is sturdy yet not extremely heavy? Here's just a picture from my travels.

There are pretty hard foams. You can layer a hard foam in the center and a softer foam around the edge, or even covering the entire face.

Does the aspis have a boss? If so that is tricky to cover. Best use a plastic boss and cover it in foam cut to form a half sphere.

But ultimately the question is: will your event even allow a shield with a hard core? Many don't. If they do then a plastic sheet covered in foam would be ideal, and pretty light.

>> No.8428818

>>8428786
I've had good experiences using those foam puzzle piece floor mats to make shields, if you use two of them together it'll make a good shield up to about two feet. Anything bigger than that will need a plastic or cardboard core with the foam around it.

Well theres multiple ones but it's relatively average hits. Nothing too hardcore but not just light feather tap. Good enough hits to feel them. The moment the glue touches fabric the fabric turns dark and it takes on a resin texture when dry. There are some very dry adhesives that will not soak the fabric, but you'd have to ask a specialist about that. But double sided tape will work fine. Just reinforce it with some actual stitches.

So yeah, Bico just unveilled part of the new rules for the 20th anniversary.

Ill make that short.

instead of using domicilation cards , guilds will now earn special notoriety points that are given based on many different factors like:

- Number of people in it
- general look of the guild
- how the campement look
- how old is the guild

this is to encourage people to either join a known guild or make a bigger effort in decorum if they start a new one.

i calculated and my new guild of longbowman would start with 8points
+2 pts for medium size
+3 points for look of the guild
+3 points for a decorum encampment
+0 points for veterancy

8points is a big banner where we can put 20 troops in it so were gonna try to fill it and get paid ingame for sending them to fight in the virtual wargame.

those are the base points your guild have
you can also win notoriety points by some actions like:

+2 pts Leading a front during the grand battle
+2 pts if you win the grand battle
+ 2 pts if the team associated to your group win the trollball tournament
+1 pts if you win a skirmish
+1 pts if you are leading a front during a campaign
+1 pts if you present a show
+1 pts if you win the siege engine tournament

and then the annual pts if at the end of the year you have in your possesion a legendary item like...i dont know...a relic or something worth fighting over.

So yeah, i'm posting this in /cgl/ and /tg/ because that mean that bico is pretty much changing a lot starting this summer.

but good news...that mean that the Cult of Slunsh (pwuz slush) will now be able to be a real power at bico as a religious group without needing the old ''stamp'' on the player card.

First off: Hot.

Second off: I would suggest using multiple, self ballasting points that alternate sides rather than a decending overlap weave for the closure. It will support weight better, ballast out the pull on the fabric, and will be much easier to get on and off. Pic related

I would also heavily suggest leather reinforcement patches at your load bearing points.

The helmet is a fiberglass helmet intended for airsoft 'loosely' (for the purposes of copyright infringement) inspired by NCR Ranger combat armor from Fallout New Vegas. I bought it years ago when I thought I was going to get into airsofting, but have never had the chance to wear it even though I love it.

Side panels for the plate? Probably not. I'll be wearing the coat over it for all the games since they aren't overnight, and the game emphasizes looking good over having functioning armor.

My plan with the finish on the chest is to try to pull it as far towards Firefly and away from Fallout as possible. The armor is supposed to be finely made, but made out of random materials so I was planning on making some chinese stencils for things like "this way up" or "marked for destruction" and put them on parts of it, like the material came from old crates and floors.
Color-wise I actually really like the greyish silver of the EVA foam, and I'll probably try to re-create it with paint. I'll be adding some cuts and bullet holes into it along with the speaker for my voice changer, then paint it all up and put a crapton of rust detailing on it.

Nothing as fancy as Barberlla's gun, sadly. The guns are a basic nerf rifle and 6-shooter. I'll be painting them up, but they won't get much else.

Just got back from a week long event. Much much more rain than i would have liked, and was only able to get 4 days of fighting, which was super intense and completely awesome. Had a great time fighting against SPQR, and enjoyed many fancy partys and feasts! Also came across two proposals! One a leader of an allianced unit proposed to his girlfriend at the Swine and wine(a pig roast with custom homemade wine) which was super cute. and another in which a good friend of my unit, invited us and others to watch from darkness on the side of a lake hidden, as she led her girlfriend to a peninsula which extends to the middle of the lake, in which she sang a song and proposed. The entire lakeside then erupted in cheers. Unfortunatly this event wasnt as smooth as i would like. aside from immense amounts of rain and win, We had a man die on the field due to cardiac arrest. and 3 of my unit mates also had to leave due to a death in the family. And although this was an amazing event, I hope we never have to run across this type of thing again.

(as a side note, the diamond pendant thing im wearing is my event token, required to be worn at all times to ensure you paid and whatever for the event.)

It really depends. 'For your average event just make sure you don't use denim or cargo pockets.

People spend a lot of time and effort on researching and recreating period accurate garb. But there are reasons why people don't dress like that any more. It's impractical, uncomfortable, and possibly in conflict with modern standards of decency. However, if you wish to make the effort, specify. Period and region should be enough for a quick superficial research.

I actually started this particular game 6 years ago after I'd only been larping for a year. Made a Facebook page, wrote some shitty rules in my college's computer lab between classes (the rules have been updated a lot since then, but most of my numbers and my basic underlying system is still in place which is pretty nifty), and rented a shady warehouse space off of Craigslist. I handed the game over to a good friend of mine who had been staffing for me for a bit (I was moving and also very burnt out) and he managed to expand it even further and find a permanent space for it, and it doesn't seem like the game will flounder any time soon.

What I'm saying is- start your own game! It isn't so hard, and can be done with little to no seed money, especially when it's just starting off!

I'm actually really excited to be going back as a player- finally get to play my own game!

I wear late 1400s Florentine which is fairly close fitting so it's not comfy exactly. I do so love the long full full skirts though. Makes me want to twirl and spin constantly.

Earlier less structured garb seems like it must be comfy though. Probably more comfortable then the lolita/otome clothes I wear generally.

Been meaning to build a lugged spear for a while. On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being "follow this guide to the letter" and 1 being "there is literally nothing of value here," how close should I stick to this outline when making it?

>> No.8436330

>>8436294
There's a couple of factors here.
Whether or not it passes your game's weapons check entirely depends on the rules and restrictions of your game.

Aesthetic-wise, it looks like dick and the blue duct tape is absolutely shit.

Is it functional? Most likely. The creation instructions seems pretty typical for duct tape and noodle weapons. I am extremely worried by this though:
>Note: After a night of fighting I had to retape the head a little but all and all it was a solid weapon all and all.

Depends on the game obviously, but he shouldn't have to be re-taping it.

Are latex lugged spears with points not an option for you because of the rules of the game you play?
If the game you play won't allow pointed tip spears, at the very least keep the color scheme realistic. Use plasti-dip and fabric heads if you must but leave the duct tape behind.

I give it 2/10.

>> No.8436365

>>8436330
There are a few things that I definitely was not planning to emulate there, yeah--the dick design and duct tape being major ones. I've got hockey tape and polyethylene foam, and was planning to "sculpt" the head a bit more to get a flatter shape that at least somewhat resembles an actual spearhead.

Latex is accepted by my game, but isn't an option for me at the moment for financial reasons. I already have the materials to make the weapon, and I'm still fairly new to LARPing so I could use the practice. Another reason for my not going with latex yet is that I haven't quite gotten a feel for my character, so I don't want to sink too much money into anything I can't take apart and reuse if I change my mind.

Pointed tips are fine, as long as they're rounded a little bit and have plenty of give, so that an accidental eye shot won't cause lasting harm.

And yes, I intend to make a cloth cover for it too.

>> No.8436382

>>8436365
I would recommend against covering striking surfaces of a weapon with hockey tape unless you bought the expensive good stuff. The cheap hockey tape melts and gets very sticky in the heat, and will leave a residue on garb and armor.

Making your own plastidip or latex weapons isn't hard or particularly expensive. Check out this tutorial:
http://www.dagorhir.com/forums/index.php?topic=15445.0

Since you're new-ish you'll be cut some slack. If you're going supremely cheap and on a weapon that will be temporary, a nicely made cloth cover over shaped foam with a wrapped handle should be acceptable.

Just remember that it is a temporary solution and to always try to get better.

>> No.8436410

>>8436382
It's pretty nice hockey tape, yeah. Howie's, since I saw that mentioned here a while back as a good one to get.

I hadn't considered making my own latex/plastidip stuff, figured you meant ordering from a site. I know a few of the other players have the means to make them, so I may check with them on that front. I'll save the link too, thanks.

>Greaves are pinned and the left leg has a habit of slipping so I'm working on something to fix that right now.
fun fact: for most people their legs doesn't have the same measurements. Usually there is a dominant leg, like there is a dominant hand. Which means you use it more, hence a little bigger muscles. It's not that obvious if you just look at the legs but when you want a tight fitting hose it can really fuck up things

Let's all hand PTSD-laden Iraq combat veterans loaded guns, and have a surprise fireworks show for them! That's just as safe. If you're going to learn how to hurt people, you shouldn't be surprised when sane people don't want you around the rest of civilized society.

If my chapter owner didn't ban nuts like that, and they did come to our games and hurt somebody, we'd be liable, because we failed to stop them while knowing that they're dangerous. That would make it at least partially our fault.

It's better to get rid of some undesirable people and let the majority play in peace, than let those other people in and run a risk we don't have to take.

>fistbump

Fields of Iron, here.

The people I'm talking about are a couple of HEMA guys from the Cincinnati area. They did jousting and a bunch of stage combat and at least one is a vet. I watched them do a combat scene at a NERO game in fullplate, where they were outright punching each other in the helmet, full-contact, with gauntlets. They clearly didn't care about the safety of each other or anybody else. Aside from that, they're way unsafe fighters from everything I've seen; they swing their weapons way too fast for a lightest-touch game, and they think that you should just have to suck up pain from weapon hits if your defense is good enough that they have to swing extra-fast to beat your defense.

I don't know them personally, but I've seen them and I believe what some of our own veterans have said about them from experiences they had interacting with them in NERO Cincinnati. You just shouldn't be allowed to have that sort of training and play a combat larp. These guys are proof that that combination is just dangerous.

I'm a lot less worried about actual veterans, because as far as I know, the army doesn't train people with swords and staffs and shit.

Are you retarded? They're literally wearing the safest possible equipment to not get hurt while doing that and besides that if they're only doing that to each other then it seems they do indeed care about the safety of others since they know that an unarmored face is not something they should not be hitting.

>and they think that you should just have to suck up pain from weapon hits if your defense is good enough that they have to swing extra-fast to beat your defense.

That pretty much confirms that Anon is a whiny bitch. Look at what he is saying. The better your defense, the faster an attacker has to swing to get through the guard - that's just basic combat. The faster you swing, the greater the chance you're going to land a blow hard enough to sting slightly, or perhaps even leave a very light bruise.

Anon is basically saying that if a person has good defense, somebody shouldn't be ALLOWED to attack him, because the blow that beats his defense is going to land harder than a slower blow (which can't hit him at all because it wouldn't get past the guard). If what he's saying is true and the people he's talking about completely agree with the statement that "you have to suck up the pain", then what exactly is wrong with that statement? Even in a lightest-touch system (I've read the NERO rules, god help me), the point is to hit as lightly as possible. That's clearly not supposed to mean "as light as physically possible measured against a stationary target who is not defending themselves." It's clearly supposed to mean that you're allowd to actually try to hit the other guy, but when you do hit them, you're supposed to hit as lightly as possible - WHILE STILL MAKING CONTACT.

Dystopia Rising is a bunch of ex-Vampire larpers (a paper-rock-sissors combat mechanic), so it's entirely possible that Anon is correct in and of the DR rules. But he's only talking about seeing these people fight at a NERO event, and by NERO rules, he's completely full of shit in his objections.

Also, this: >>8442336

Anon's implication smacks of bitterness and defeat. Considering the training the two HEMA guys have gone through, I'd trust them with my safety far more than some random noodle dicksword waving anon who is used to playing lightest touch tapgames.

Did they actually go to a Dystopia Rising game before being banned? Have they done anything unsafe at one of your games? Have they done anything unsafe under the combat rules of a different game while at that different game?

And on that last one, the whole armor-punching thing doesn't count. I saw the video of the Beronis events where they did that, and in both cases, they were doing an arena fight showcase, separated from the general larp population, with people running crowd control to keep anyone from getting involved. It was very clearly being done outside the normal combat perameters for that game, and with the knowledge and assistance of the gamerunners. It wasn't like they were in the middle of a field battle and suddenly started punching each other.

I would NEVER, EVER take advantage of that and ruin people's fun by going all out; a role play is a role play, and sparring is sparring. There is a huge difference between trying to fantasize and then acting out the dream, and I know both intimately.

While I seek genuine thrills, I feel like people who have authority over LARPing and view SCA/HEMA this way is due to pure ignorance out of never doing anything that has ever exposed them to pain.

My choices for larps near me are Dag, Amtgard, and DR. There used to be a Nero chapter but it closed down.

Amtgard is idiotic Our local Dag group outright requires you to be in garb before any actual combat events (local practices don't have to be, but you fight differently in your garb than in street clothes, so we recommend it). I know that's not usual for Dag, but that's how we play.

And then there's DR. Don't know much about it, aside from it's zombie survival, it's light-touch and Nerf-based, and what I hear about in the larp threads here and on /tg.

I'm sure there's better larps on the East Coast, or in Europe, or in Russia (for Stalker larps, anyway). But I'm not in those places. I get to choose between those three, or not to larp at all. And I'm disinclined to opt out of larping alltogether.

Awesome!
Pic related is the weapon I'm trying to construct. (pardon me calling it a dane ax, I should just shut up about words I don't know.)
The shaft? in my head I'm seeing the shape as either a rectangle or a hexagon with 2 longer sides... like a hockey stick handle if that makes sense? (I'm totally fine with hopping on paint and drawing this out)
I'm trying to find a material I can make the shaft out of and I'm not restricted by regulations like "It can't be sharp, it can't be pointy, it can't bludgeon someone to death." Those are things I'd like to avoid, sure but when it all boils down I suppose it could be those things.

I've been getting hung up on the idea of using PVC for the shaft, but I believe it only comes in round dowel shapes to my knowledge. I thought "maybe I can take a band saw and shave the sides into this shape" but from memory PVC is pretty thin and if I'm not extremely careful I'm probably going to be burning through a lot of PVC.
I thought maybe I could use wood and then gesso down the road to make it not look like wood. I'm not sure how heavy that would be or durable, I also know wood tends to warp and respond to moisture and it's been raining for the past 2 months where I live so that could be a real threat?

The head is a whole other issue that's waiting on this foot to fall. I figure depending on what course of action I take with the shaft will determine my plan for the head materials and how to affix it. So I'm not looking for someone to hold my hand and have to spend time helping me, I just figure you larp guys spend a lot of time around similar props and know what works and what doesn't work.

the head is more important. If it's just for cosplay you have way more options to make the shaft out of then the head. I mean it doesn't have to withstand fighting as far as I understand and stuff liek that, so the chokepoint is the head.

Also the question arise that how much time do you have for this

>> No.8442635

Ah, gotchya.
I have until November to make the entire costume, and even then, if I don't have it done by November I can just finish it by February and it'll still be fine with me. That's not to say that the pic I posted is the entire costume, I have a sort of collage of things I wish to make and piece together if you wanted to get the rough idea of what it will look like.
While this isn't battle I'd like it to be able to withstand say being used as a walking stick? If it can support a very slight lean (I'm 5'11" and 160lbs) a few times for photos then I'd be happy.

I don't think I was clear on that.
It's not exactly for cosplay. If I go to a con dressed up as this it wouldn't kill me if weapon's check didn't let me take it in. I'd be ok with leaving it in my room and I'd rather not limit the creative opportunities by a con's often vague rules for props.

that's easy, you don1t have to overengineer it. Anyway I would personally would go for wood as a shaft as it's easy to carve (although takes a lot of time) and you can attach stuffs to it with realtive easy and very durable. Ashwood and beech are the go to stuff for this.
The moisture thing isn't a problem as long as you don1t leav it in a pool or something. Maybe put a little oil on it and that's all. After that you can cover it in whatever the fuck you want, even wood glue and paint it.

>> No.8442663

alright. Yeah... wood. I can see that and some wood glue doing some magic here. I imagine I'd just use wood for the head as well and keep it simple. It seems like that would be easier to detail as well with a small chisel or woodburner. Could use sandpaper or a diamond pad to get all smooth.
Thanks, man. I appreciate your help.

for the head you could use some kind of plastic too, a PVC sheet or ABS or something along that line, I'm don't know that much about the plastics, but for a head it would be easier to work with as it can be way more thinner and still durable.
Or you could go all the fuck this shit way and use metal... but I would only recommend that if you have experience with it otherwise it will look like shit

>> No.8442721

>>8442686
Hmm I forget why I didn't want to use metal. I mean, I could use bar stock for the shaft, drill through the end and bolt the head on (hillbilly welding) and then just oxy cut the general shape of the head and grind to finish.
... I know there's a reason I'm not using metal, I just forget. Weight maybe? ordnance? hmmm. Maybe the offshot chance that I do take it to a convention I don't want it to hurt someone.

If you use wood and metal it will be heavy and you might run into trouble with security, not just LARP safety.

But I don't think this is the way to go. From the picture the blades could well be ceramic and the staff is some epoxy compound material.

On the cheap I'd use 2 parallel lines of PVC pipe for the staff, they even have shoulder elements that can perfectly follow the bend under the head. Fill them with heavy construction foam. Cover them in chicken mesh for shear strength and then some hard foam sheet for a nice texture, latex paint optional.

For the 3 blades as well as the blade cover I think that thick PMMA sheets might do the trick. You can dremel and sand them down to shape, then paint or varnish to get the finish you want.

The tip at the bottom would have to be carbon steel or it'll suffer terrible wear.

If you're on less of a budget then make a wood positive molds of the blades and the staff. Nothing beats the control over minutiae you get when you carve wood. Then cast negative latex molds. These will hold up some 20 castings or more if you're careful, and you can try different materials. PMMA can be made from liquid resin, and there's lots of different resins and foams you can try in latex molds. Airbrush the cast parts, assemble, and you could probably sell the result.

That's interesting. I really appreciate the feedback and all the help I've gotten here. I think I should have been more completely open about this project.
The costume I'm making is simply just a costume, I have no rhyme nor reason, event, nor get together. I mean, maybe halloween would be cool but it doesn't have to happen.
I'm not exactly keen on producing these and selling them, they'd be amateur quality and it doesn't sit well with me making a profit off an idea that wasn't mine. But I suppose if it worked, I could outfit some of my friends with the same things, so I won't rule that out for future plans.

At first I thought about foregoing the entirety of the bottom part. Now that I've made a little mock up and received so much help from you guys I think I shouldn't limit myself with doubt. Onward to failure a thousand times over until perfection is achieved! (read: I'm going to Lowes for more supplies!)

I'm really thinking the wood shaft is a good idea. I can pretty much say that would work well, I have a couple carpenter friends that could help with it should I decide to go with wood. I am thinking that if I went PVC I could make it (I don't know the word for it) collapsible? Not telescopic, but comes apart? So the top would become like a 2 handed cleaver? I believe there are some threaded male/female PVC options, I could then get fancy with it and add LEDs over time if it's hollow.
Pardon my english and rambling here. I think I'm just overwhelmed with possibilities and need to chill out, go get supplies, and just get to work. I appreciate it, thank you all and I'll post some time down the road in the WIP thread.

I can write from both perspectives!
When I started playing larps I was significantly underage. It was terrible. People treated me with kid gloves because I was underage. Nobody was willing to be my friend because I was averagely attractive and it made them 'uncomfortable.' The kind of awkward "Tarantula is hot but watch out! She's underage! Hur durr durr." behavior was hurtful and made me sad when all I wanted was to be friends with people who larped with me. How underage I was would get brought up every other sentence. It was miserable.

However, now that I'm significantly overage, most underage teens at larps annoy the shit out of me. We've had good ones that have made an effort and are pretty chill, but I'd say the vast majority are horrible. They have a habit of playing 'lolrandum' characters, flirting inappropriately, and generally being disreputable.

If the teens are tolerable I try to get them into a in-game group or house as soon as possible so they have experienced players to work with. Otherwise I just stay far away.

So what's the right stuffing for gambesons?

Traditionally it was wool. Today cotton is sometimes used. Some use polyester and claim it is much more comfortable to wear and easy take care of.

Opinions? Experiences?

>> No.8444535

>>8444499
I'd use cotton or poly only because of how allergic I am to wool. Assuming allergies weren't an issue I'd rank it:
wool>>>>>>>>>>>cotton>poly

Wool wears very nicely and won't overheat you. It'll stay in the channels of the gambeson and not clump weirdly.

Cotton is a natural fiber, which is a plus, but it can clump weirdly if you don't have enough stitching in it (which is why quilts are quilted).
I would resort to polyester if allergies are a significant problem, but it gets hot and uncomfortable. I suppose if you're washing your gambeson and not drying it fully it would be less prone to mold. It's also made to avoid the clumping effect that cotton has.

Wool, cotton batting, linen batting and horsehair are all historically accurate, with cotton being rarer in Europe.

DO NOT EVER USE POLY. It retains heat and does not have the same condensing quality to the fibers (and thus is not as good for absorbing blows). Its plastic. Keep this in mind.

>>8444560
Wool/cotton blend is more economical and easier to get. Cotton is not bad if you pack/quilt it tightly and is not super rare in history. Linen batting is great, but hard to get. Be sure to hot wash the batting to shrink it.
