That's why it's important to remember that the harassment isn't the only issue here. If he was just a creeper who took a course and promised to change I'd be okay with what he's done here.

I work for the training department @ my company and actually give this course (AB 1825 and AB 2053 sexual harassment compliance) out. First, the certificate is pretty damn dubious and kinda pointless, as long as there's record it's completed nobody cares.

Secondly and more importantly... this course is just a legal butt-cover some jobs require, and has no relevance to the dumb stunts he's pulled. All it does is talk about what "you" (a manager or supervisor at a company) should do to recognize, and resolve situations of sexual harassment between your employees. It has not a freaking thing to do with your _OWN_ conduct. Even if he's trying to clean up his act (which pfft no way) this course has nothing to do with that.

She'll still be attending John's Hawaii event, but I'm not surprised since the drama doesn't affect her.

For the cosplay & fashion guests, I'm more concerned of them being mistreated: not fed, no translator, no handler, back to back sessions with no breaks, not having the info and equipment they need to present or be successful in their panels, etc. I think any sexual innuendos would be lost on them because he would need a translator to talk to them. PZ is not the only failure with money.

1) Failed to pay staff of Import Reactor.
2) Got sued by Baker Nissan.
3) Failed to pay out prize moneyNUMEROUS times at Planet Zero.
4) Stole forfeited property after PZ closed and used it at Matsuri 2013.
5) Failed to pay Nightmare the first time around.
6) Did not pay fucking MIYAVI.
7) Ran out of money so he couldn't buy food or pay translators/handlers.
8) Tried to get Nina to leave behind all of her product for his own financial gain.
9) Is suspected of stealing incredible amounts of product from other vendors over the years.

What about the fake Japan Relief Charity?
Most people that aren't on the inside of the situation don't know about the real issues, and most people who are on the inside didn't want to lose their friends that were also involved. Now that people are coming forward and talking about it the international community is getting involved.

This is one of the many aspects of this whole thing that annoys the fuck out of me. Having staffed cons for well over a decade, staffing every department, including guest relations, who the fuck does this? This is not something I'd expect from a convention that's been going for NINE years. Maybe a first or second year. This is shit one of the larger cons in my state wouldn't even pull and they are known to be a shithole because of non-payment and not even caring about guests or attendees just the bottom line.

When you run events like these, you don't do it (solely) for yourself and your personal gains. You do it for others. If knowing that your event made someone's weekend makes everything you've stressed over, cried over, lost sleep over, all worthwhile, then great. Your heart is in the right place.

Clearly John thinks if his cock is out, his heart must be in the right place.

it's not that he doesn't understand he's doing sexual arrassment, it's that he doesn't care. a fucking degree in sexual arrassment (and i seriously hope you guys don't have something like that) would not change that, and imo he would have looked like an even bigger asshole if he'd taken some more legit course. why do you people care so much that his fake repentance looks, well, faked?

Verification would have to be done by either contacting J-Glam (unsure if they were managing Miyavi back then though) or auditing the convention. There is no "proof" to be had otherwise, unless you count the dozen or so staff members that have said in the past that they know he was never paid.

Unfortunately, a NDA is still scary to a layperson despite the fact that NDAs are typically incredibly hard to enforce (not like these are trade secrets) and require you to actually retain an attorney and file suit, which from objective accounts this individual does not seem to have the money for. No one is coming forward with their firsthand knowledge because of this fear. I can only recommend that the staffers in question, some of whom I know are following this thread, contact an attorney in their area to determine their rights and decide if they want to break radio silence.

An explanation from someone who kind of knows what the hell they're talking about.

Only comic cons pay some of their guest upfront or at least a portion of their guarantee before they step foot. This generally applies to the big names. Anything below headliners will get paid at the end of the show.

Anime cons rarely pay any guest up front unless negotiated by the manger or their representing company. Unless they are musicians or recognizable voice actors they usually don't have an agent. Sometimes bigger name Japanese guests might require an upfront wire but almost all guests put faith in the convention that they won't get screwed over. They figure if it has been a long running convention that they must pay their guests in a timely manner.

US Guests who aren't worried about their rep will make a stink if they get stiffed. They might go the more subtle route letting their fans know. This is in hopes that their fans will pressure the convention to cough it up. The press might catch wind to stir it up.

Japanese guests tend to be a bit more quiet as culturally they don't want to draw attention to themselves. They will quietly pressure or post subtle hints but they won't outright call them out.

The main reason anime cons don't pay a vast majority of their guests up front is that the money they pull in before the convention begins is shifted around to pay for everything to hold the convention. Unless a convention is capped attendance, with it being sold out before the doors open, they won't know how much money they'll bring in. At the conclusion they are suppose to pay out what they owe.

Anime conventions, depending on the region, can have anywhere from 50% to 80% of their revenue hinge on walk ups. There is a common trend that the bigger a convention gets the more money that tends to come in from pre-registrations.

If you have a vendetta against AM then contact guests after their announced warning them that AM has a history of not paying their guests.

Okay I am just going to address this right now. I've seen a few people say "John needs to step down" or "John and his wife need to step down" wah wah wah.

Anime Matsuri is not run like most conventions where there is a board of people that make these decisions. John and Deneise are sole owner/operators because they are both President and Vice President.

There is NO WAY they will EVER step down. Ever. Or like they even could, as they are so wrapped up in this business.

Also I can't think of another con where the con owners put their face ALL OVER their convention, spend so much money openly when they are unemployed, and have a show called "The Trinity Leigh Show" that is an hour of the con owner jerking herself off on stage.

Matsuri is run poorly on its face. If go to it, you're giving Deneise and John money. Period. No money you give them is going to the con save to pay off bills. The rest of it goes straight into buying him and his family shit.

If you go to Matsuri still you're an idiot.

I realized that if they are spending money like this, they are not running a non-profit organization, which does require an elected board of directors.

They won't step down, but if they see it dying, they could abandon ship or sell the rights off to someone else who may be able to do something with it. It's more likely that they'd let it crash and burn and then start something else until that crashes and burns rinse and repeat.

I work with a con that is for profit, btw. And we actually pay our guests and pay staffers that devote a good deal of their time yearly to the convention. Not all for profit conventions operate like this hot mess. Most invest a good deal of the earnings into the next year(s) rather than operating on empty promises.

Atelier Pierrot missing pieces never returned after the fashion show - 2010
Baby missing pieces from either fashion show or booth- 2013
Angelic Pretty stock in locked storage and key goes missing - 2015
VM, Atelier Boz, Krad Lanrete stuff missing in customs from German party - 2015

(also having Lockshop make extra wigs and extensions that didn't get used - luckily those got intercepted by Lolita Collective instead)

To be fair chances are high that those items are really stuck in customs. German customs are horrible, things get stuck and you need to go to your local custom department to get it. Also you need to have a letter from customs before being able to got there. As the german post is at labor strike meaning no letters getting deliviered it really possible they are stuck there and the letter never reached them.
Question is who the sender is because after 2 weeks the package is sent back.

They do something that is referred to as turnstyle. They count every every day someone attends as 1 attendee, i.e. if I buy a 3 day badge I count as 3 people.

This tactic is incredibly common among Anime cons, it is not unique to AM and almost every con you attend inflates its numbers. If they coulted every time your badge was scanned the number would be ridiculous, like 100k.

They do not use turnstyle. If they did then the over 10,000 pre-registrations and 3-day badges would make them a 30,000 con. They pad the numbers by lumping in the car show.

They refuse to announce the number of badges sold just for the car show which is why 24,000 is a dubious number. A-Kon was 27,000 which no one will deny if you attended it. AM was not 24,000. Just taking the rave at Matsuri for example, it was completely fucking dead in comparison to A-Kon's filled-to-capacity event with a constant line that doubled that amount. Then again that might be because Matsuri's rave was total trash. The lights were on and it was in a much too-large space.

Then look at the cosplay show. Matsuri's cosplay show was nowhere near capacity and again the lights were fucking on. A-Kon's was in a much larger room and it was completely filled with many more people waiting outside, and that was even with CC broadcast of the show which very likely had an effect on attendance.

The kids will get saddled with a lot of things (having a set of parents with a whole set of issues, for one) but legally debt can't be passed on from parent to child, at least not in the US. There are collections agencies who will lie and try to convince grown-up kids to pay for their parents' debts in order to get their cash, whether their parents are dead or deadbeat. (If you're a grown-up kid in the US that situation, don't pay them a cent. Send a signed and mail-certified letter to the collections agency, asking for documentation that serve as proof that you owe the debt, and they should contact you by mail. They'll stop calling you, or otherwise risk facing the wrath of government consumer agencies.)

Debt can legally be passed to a spouse, though. Which makes Deniece quite pitiful. She'll be responsible for whatever debt John has if he doesn't pay it off, even if they separate or divorce.
