I dunno there are a couple possible reasons off the top of my head.

-Lots of women want bigger boobs. It isnt anything new or special to cosplay. Just a smaller community so more of a spotlight gets shined on it when it occurs.
-Increased confidence. If you feel good about how you look you present a better image of yourself out to people and they will want to be around you/drawn to you.
- Some people buy into the myth that being cosplay famous happens instantly when you have boobs. When in reality it takes a bit more then that. Boobs/Looks, Marketing or Connections, Location (Living in the US means your easier to fly to cons who are more likely to have Cosplay guests.), Decent Photography, Access to a seamstress/sewing skills.

I dunno, DD are very large on a small frame, even if it's proportional to your backside. Also keep in mind that cup size isn't the only measurement, but band size as well. You can get a larger band size and a smaller cup and still have great boobs, that just aren't scary massive like Yaya's. Obviously I'm no expert and far from qualified to give you advice on your own body, but there are plenty sizes that will give you the results you're after, there's no need to go straight for HUGE. I might just be talking out my ass here, but they can be large while still not being extreme.

If I had to guess, it's because cosplayers are often competitive with one another for attention, and few things are as attention grabbing as big-ol' boobies. Not even craftsmanship.

I don't believe it is, at least the taboo has worn off a lot. Personally, the only thing that bothers me is when those who obviously have them fervently deny it. It's silly. Wanting bigger boobs isn't a big deal, but when you get them and there's pictures of you online without them, it's stupid to say they're natural.
In the cosplay community however, it's not exactly "taboo", it's mostly obnoxious when cosplayers with huge fake tits will focus all their costumes on their breasts, and get well-known because of it, and then get upset when people when that's what people talk about, along with my reasoning above. Or they don't have much skill and get famous for their boobs, and then wonder why people don't take them seriously "as a cosplayer". At least that's my take on it.
