The transition in the game's priorities from 5th to 6th edition Amtgard. That was when they changed the weapon construction rules to reflect their intent to attract children and cripples to the game and swaddle them in bubbles so that nobody got hurt. I got back from Iraq and went down to Spring War and was promptly told every weapon I owned was illegal, weapons I had painstakingly constructed to maximize efficiency without compromising safety during the past two editions. The standards changed so drastically that the new weapon standard was akin to wrapping a piece of cardboard tube in a feather pillow in comparison. I walked away after 10 years of playing and never looked back.

If their allergy is so serious that they can somehow stop breathing after coming in contact with sealed and silicone-coated latex for 1/100ths of a second on a clothing-covered limb, then they clearly haven't been evolutionarily selected for and they can damn well die.

Or just not play. Not everything has to be accessible to everybody.

(Somebody who wants to play our airsoft larp is complaining that he's allergic to the plastic biodegradable BBs we use, and we should change the game to allow him to fully participate, or that he gets a giant "forever immune to bullets" ability and headband so nobody can use any sort of bullet-based attack against him. Mild discomfort allergies have my sympathies though. It's miserable. I'm allergic to wool and it makes me very sad that I can't wear wool garb.

Nope, that kindof severe allergy to plastics is a thing. I have a friend who goes into anaphylaxis at the slightest touxh of vinyl plastic. She's been sent to A and E a couple of times and I've seen it with my own two eyes. She mostly gets hospitalised because there are idoots who think she's lying and go out of their way to get her in contact with vinyl in order to trigger it. It's never as funny when she's on the ground turning blue and they have to call an ambulance.

It must be nice to have complete control over a game like that. Here, if you deny someone the "right" to play, then it's "discrimination" and they sue you. It's litigation fear that turned Amtgard into a bitch game.

Let me tell you how bad it is here, using this delightful example from the mid-'90s: there was this guy at one of our Kingdom's parks, an older guy who had gotten Agent Oranged in Vietnam back in the '70s. His whole family played Amtgard, so he'd become something of a local fixture at this Barony, he even held court positions several times vying for his knighthood (which he never got because he was a dildo). One of the things about Amtgard is that you have to sign a medical waiver to even play the game, and on this waiver there's a clause that states that if you have a medical condition that makes the game unsafe for others then you're technically not allowed to play and that you fully understand this, and this guy signed it. Well, as time progressed the gene damage from the Agent Orange began to numb his extremities: he couldn't feel when he was taking hits from the weapons anymore, and he turned into what we called a "rhino-hiding sluffer" of epic proportions. He simply could't register that he'd been hit unless it physically knocked him to the ground, which wasn't/isn't kosher in Amtgard. As his condition deteriorated, it was brought to the attention of the Kingdom that the guy was a cheating faggot who wouldn't take his hits because he 'couldn't feel them', so Kingdom asked him what the hell was going on. He 'fessed up to his diagnosis and Kingdom 'suggested' that he retire from the game. He refused and claimed if anyone tried to force him to leave, despite him having signed a waiver stating that if he was medically unfit to play the game he was not permitted to play it, he would bring the matter before a judge and that he would claim it was discrimination. The bastards blinked and let him stay, and over a period of a month he basically drove everyone but his immediate family from his local land because he'd made gameplay impossible. He literally had to die before that land recovered enough to regain its Barony status.

Are we talking ridged for cut-and-thrust or a fencing hood? The AB cover will not suffice for either, and will have gaps and will not be ridged enough for cut and thrust. Get an actual fencing hood. Thoughts on lorica segmentata made into a more 16th century style chestplate + girdle combo? I've been rigging out CAD designs and are wondering if that be something that would be allowed in these sorts of larps. The pauldrons and vambraces and cauter are all in european style, but I just love the mobility of segmentata, but have always hated the chestplate.

The segmentata is actually a pretty poor design that wasn't used or especially liked by the legions.

Yeah, the upper portion feels fucking retarded, but the acutal banded girdle has always felt really great. I actually made a few segmented girdles that are bolted together with free moving areas for the bolts to slide along versus the hanging leather straps. The leather straps just sit at the top band and would sling over my shoulders. The problem with the leather bands going all the way down is that weird sense of torsion that you get with normal segmentata.

>> No.8416713

>>8416710
Again, just my suggestion. For the actual act of combat and such, it is historically a poor design with praetorians actually opting for hamata and squamata in actual combat.

That said, it shouldn't be too hard to replace the brigandine portion of the armour I linked to make it happen if you are keen on it.

Segmentata looked good, that was really about all it did for anyone above and beyond the hamata and musculata designs. Its maintenance was a bitch and, historically, it gets a lot of anachronistic treatment that makes it seem as though it was a common design throughout Roman history when in fact it was an Empire-era design and aside from statuary like Trajan's Column it's not well-documented in how widespread the design might have been. It could possibly even have been as a rare a thing to see in use as lorica plumata and reserved for higher ranks only.

>> No.8416752

>>8416727
>>8416713

True. In response to Gropey, I do seriously agree with the poor ergonomics. Your pauldrons fucking flop around unless you strap them to your tunic and then they just tear it apart after a bout. That's why I wanted to replace the chestplate and pauldrons, because they're pants on head retarded for non-regimental combat. I really do appreciate the input however. I've never had anything beyond a 1v1 bout with a friend, and I generally opt for a buckler with a swordstaff/glaive/spearlike device. The chestplate you linked me to seems like it would flow well over the girdle/trunk, and shouldn't be hard to cut out on the router and then work it out on the planisher.

>>8416727

>Italic people are famous for having rather large buttocks and staunch hips

That's one of the points that casts doubts on the widespread use of the segmentata: by the time of say around just before the Dominate, the vast majority of the Legions were from the outer provinces of Rome, in great part from the Danube region, Illyria, and upper Gaul, people not widely known for having Latin stature or build. It's very likely the bulk of the armors in common use came from derivatives of Occidental designs similar to squamata, or they kept to hamata, both of which are much more forgiving of lack of ass and hips.

Pic only marginally related, I just like seeing hamata in widespread use on a bunch of white guys rather than trying to shove them all into fake segmentata like in Gladiator.

>>8416798

Yeah, I've found with a friend of mine who is of similar build, but has no hips or ass tends to say how it just flops about on him. He feels all the weight on his shoulders, not his sides and shoulders. Sort of interesting. I would have thought the segmentata would have been easier to produce on a large scale, considering the Romans had a mining operation at par with Industrial England. I mean, they didn't have automated routers, but there were slaves who could be handed shears and files.

It'd take some mining to put down 30 Legions' worth of mail and scale, even at the reduced sizes for Legions of the Empire, and keep them maintained, and that's not even counting the urban cohorts, the Praetorians, the vigiles, the cavalry's horses, and the list goes on and on for things large quantities of iron would be needed for. But you also have to remember that the really important mines were the gold and silver ones, since they had been debasing their coinage since Augustus, and the occupation of certain outlying provinces was actually bleeding the Empire's finances faster than they were making up for the cost expenditure. Mommsen goes into great detail about how around the time of Trajan, the occupations of both Britannia and Mesopotamia were costing Rome more than either were actually worth.

Specifically, i am in the new york area but have only attended LARP's in new Jersey. Specifically Knight Realms, which i enjoyed but stopped going because the community is fucking awful, or at least my experience with them has been unpleasant (paired with the fact that an underaged girl just got sexually assaulted and people didn't report it to the cops or inform her parents, or at least that is what i was told).

After figuring out i liked being able to beat people, i picked a warrior class up and also enjoyed the role playing but did not enjoy that people could not remove themselves from game when game was done, IE they dont shut the hell up and in game drama carries into real life and vice versa.

I also tried Dystopia rising, which people demanded be taken seriously despite how pants on head retarted it can be. Also, for people concerned about not offending people, they have a couple dicey issues regarding races...

I am looking for a LARP without a level headed community honestly. I am sorry if this sounded like a vendetta, i was just totally blown away by some of the people and things i ran into.

If they are truely a small group that doesn't have what you want, why not look into neighboring baronies? Avoid any game that either has people getting molested, or has people who are crazy enough to tell a stranger rumors of molestation. Especially when it isn't reported to the cops. You dodged a bullet there anon.

>IE they dont shut the hell up and in game drama carries into real life and vice versa.
This is extremely common in LARPs (happens outside of the US too) and it's called 'metagaming.' Some games are better than others, but the best way to deal with it imo is to find a game where there is a smaller amount of it, and avoid the people who do it like the plague.

>which people demanded be taken seriously despite how pants on head retarted it can be.
Most people like having their games taken seriously, at least at game. Nobody likes the guy who comes up shouting "You're all nerds and your swords are fake" or the guy who snickers in the corner whenever you're trying to do a serious scene.
That being said DR is a pretty meh game, and some of the stories I've heard about it here has made me suspicious of it.

Are you personally offended by race insensitivity in games? Because that actually cuts out a lot of them. Games are pretty dumb when it comes to race.

Finding a level-headed community is sadly something that I can't help with. A lot of that has to do with your personal definition of level-headed, and also requires personal experience form the standpoint of the person suggesting it. I'm pretty sure there's a New York chapter of Alliance but Alliance is VERY hit and miss.

Perhaps SCA? More fighting, more serious people, less roleplay? LARP attracts some crazy weirdos, but there will be a game out there for you somewhere anon.

I'm starting to think that another player in my LARP group has a crush on me. When we're playing on the same team, he always finds some reason to be near me. If we're on opposite teams, he hunts me down and kills me first. I keep catching him staring at me. When we're not playing, he keeps inviting me over to his house (I don't go though) and he sends me messages on Facebook just to say "hi" and stuff like that. He knows I'm already in a relationship. He seems really nice and I don't want to hurt his feelings but at the same time, I don't want to lead him on or give him false hope. Has anyone else ever been in this situation? This is a bit more of a re-enactment question, but what's the availability of repro WW1 uniforms in general? Like, how hard it is to find all the little pieces and accessories to pull off an accurate impression of a specific unit?

Because i've been thinking of trying to build something, mainly for LARP purposes. I would like it to be accurate for a certain unit in certain time. Something like US troops guarding the mexican border to something like picture related, the siberian expedition and cold weather clothing. Naturally, there probably isn't going to be LARP about that certain conflict which happened to involve my very specific uniform of the 2nd Engineer Battallion, but the outfit would be somewhat accurate for beginnings of 19th century.

But how should i set from here? Like, are there some forums centered around WW1 re-enactment? I'm guessing they would have pretty good information.

I'll post this to the LARP thread too.

It depends very heavily on the nation you're trying to reproduce. I was building an Imperial German-inspired costume for running demos of Leviathans (flying WW1 battleship game), and ran into tremendous issues sourcing stuff.

In general, Western-front British, French, and American stuff is fairly easy to come by. Russian, German, Austro-Hungarian, and Ottoman stuff is extremely difficult. The further away you move from the Triple Entente powers, and the further you move away from "Infantry on the Western front", the harder it's going to be to track stuff down - a rifleman from the 92nd Infantry Division at the Battle of the Marne is going to be MUCH easier to source than an engineer from the 27th Infantry Regiment from AEF-Siberia.

I've been wanting to get into LARP for a while but have felt slightly intimidated by how much it seems to involve and how male-dominated it is, so a girl doing a guide is actually a great idea to someone like me. Also $1000 is hardly an astronomical amount...

So guys, how bad is this tunic?

I received it some weeks ago, because I was in a rush to buy a tunic for my local Renaissance Festival, and didn't have much money at the time.

It's 100% cotton, and while it's comfortable, I don't think it's really the most accurate.

The color of it is almost an olive green.

I wanted it to just be a "general" tunic that I can use for any time period, but I can't find one historical reference to a "v-neck" tunic such as the one I have.

Should I sell it? Just buy another tunic? Can I modify this to be a little more accurate in its appearance?

I was planning on removing the trimming if I needed to, but it's just the neckline that gets me.

I know "keyhole" style necklines were popular for a big part of history, but like I said, I haven't been able to find any historical examples of a "v-necked" tunic in any pictures or descriptions.

I don't want to be the "history autist" but it makes me not even want to put the rest of my kit together if I can't even get the tunic right

>Sorry, but I have to say I like what she's doing
and what is that exactly?
I mean all the videos I've seen from her has close to zero information, Even when she makes a video about a game or a sword review at the end we acquire more info about her character and about her than the actual subject. Sometimes here videos manage to contain negative information.
I mean, how hard it is to tell some actual info on a sword? because "ohh it handles nicely" while she is waving it like a retard aren't informative at all.

Anyway apart from the zero information she gives and the fake smile and the giggles she produces (which are alone would be a reason for a brick to the face) What I really hate is her fanbase. Like, people praise her when she aren't doing anything at all and get their "information" through her, and think "yeah this is larping" All in all she is misleading them but in the end it's because people are retards.

And she is making a big deal about the fact that she is a girl, she and a bunch of other girls even started to make some kind of webseries that basically "woo girls can larp too" like there is some kind of ban or rule that girls cannot larp.

Add to that that now people basically paying her to continue her uninformative videos and misleading, so yeah, I think there are a few good basis to hate her.

tl;dr: she is an attention whore

I'm relatively new to LARPing. I watched a couple of LARP Girls's videos on YouTube when I was trying to figure out how to make my first tunic. I didn't see her as being fake or phony for giggling or acting sort of ditzy - that seems to be her genuine personality. The thing that annoyed me about her tutorials is that a lot of steps seem to be missing. Also, sometimes, she doesn't even show the finished product. For example, there was one tutorial that she did for an elf dress and she made a big deal about the pointed hemline. At the end of the tutorial, she didn't show a full body shot of the dress so the audience could see the hemline. Another thing that stood out to me is that some of her pieces don't look "finished." She did another tutorial for a cloak and the end result looked like she had just wrapped a sheet around herself. It's nice that she's trying to be creative and that she seems to be having fun with it, but there are much better sources of information out there.

I ended up getting sewing advice from one of the veterans in my LARP group. I probably should have done that in the first place instead of wasting time on all of the YouTube tutorials.

well it makes me feel assured if everyone thinks it looks good.

Now that I know a "v-neck" styling works for several different cultures and times, I can go ahead and find a nice helmet :]

GDFB has some decently priced helmets and from what I've read online, a lot of people find them acceptable *not the greatest mind you, but acceptable* so I was thinking of getting a one piece conical helmet, or maybe even a phrygian style norman helmet since the cotton of the tunic would make more sense in italy/byzantium, since I'm pretty sure those were the first places europeans experienced fully cotton clothes
