I'm a man. I've dated cover models and catwalkers...and also women who I heard spoken of in those shity hateful ways.
I've had girlfriends have serious issues comparing their apperance to that of my exs, sometimes it's just neuroses, sometimes it's been "justified" by societiy's standards
Apearence matters to me, but it is in no way the most important thing, it has never been the major factor in who I date and I've never dumped or cheated on a woman because I had the opportunity to sleep with a "more attractive" woman-and yes, I have had offers from models when I was in a committed relationship with someone who could never model, even if they had the training and were willing to put that much effort in.
I obviously can't speak for all men, but I can't imagine that I'm that unusual.

To be more on topic, one of my exs is a designer and I know that she looks at comics and the like for ideas and I saw another woman I used to date the other day, she is behind the camera now, but I'm sure that her last cover shoot was less than a decade ago.
She was at a convention.
She was dressed just like a recognizable character and I seriously doubt anyone was paying her to do it, or had helped her put the outfit together.
I often see professionals from the industry cosplaying, if it is often casual, or seasonal or to be less recognized, what of it? Sometimes it is quite serious. I've always assumed that if you do something for a living, it lessens the urge to do it in your free time, but if you want to do it professionally you ought to have some desire to do so, for its own sake, and that will never go away.

For most of us, it depends on how much effort you put in. Most incredibly beautiful people are putting in an ungodly amount of work and it is all a public façade, it doesn't survive actual living or loving.
Some people have it much easier than the rest of us, good for them, but I've known many icons whose beauty was ALL artifice.
Some lucky few pull off high above average with little effort, but they are the fortunate few.
Most people COULD be gorgeous, they just don't know how, don't believe it, lack the resources or...even if they desperately want to be attractive, have more pressing priorities.
I'm not a patch on the me of my youth, and somedays I'm ashamed to go out. I feel too bloated or disheveled to even walk to the store; it makes me wish I could tell the me of twenty years ago how easy he had it. I sit and stare at the mirror hating myself...but I'm told I still clean up decently. Most months, even if it costs me hours of self loathing, I'm honestly too busy to watch everything I eat or go to the gym every day.
My presence here aside, I have priorities, and they cost me.

5'11, 120 lb cosplayer and lolita, I had a lot of opportunities when I was in my teens but I favored my education/health and had a lot of friends who I didn't want to leave. Now I'm 15 pounds fatter and feel a lot better on a day to day basis.
