The help thread would be better, but I'll bite. Any solid zombie tutorial will be a good place for you to start. I think the Ben Nye Death Wheel would be good, as far as materials go (followed by setting powder and setting spray).

Unfortunately, there is absolutely no way to do this without some of it transferring onto your shirt, no matter how much you seal/set.

No fluid, for both weight, and leaking issues. My current thought is to use that shiny ass PVC fabric that everyone hates to make a sort of fluid shape pillow/plush thing and shove it in there. Though that idea is still in flux.

Readers digest version

These are based on heavily modified Pepakura file. Once Ive got it sized properly I transfer the pattern over to 1mm PVC sheets. To bond it I use heavy type CA glue and accelerator. Parts are held in place with lots of masking tape while this cures. I also use tape to pull the parts into the correct rounded shapes whenever possible to eliminate vertices and make the parts more uniformly rounded.

Gaps are filled with more glue or putty depending on size of the mark. Once everything is cured I sand it down with 180 grit and prime it. Go over it one more time for any imperfections. Sand with 400 & 600 grit then prime and hit with 1000.

So I had to be out of the house pretty early this morning and my mother saw this WIP in my sewing room, with some extra fabric pieces draped over the shoulders of the dressform for lack of a place to put them. Somehow she instantly assumed this was my way of telling her that my boyfriend had proposed and that i'd suddenly be getting married.... (evidently not the case)

In any case, this is my first time dealing with hoopskirts rather than petticoats for skirt shape; does anyone have advice on concealing the hoops? I've got two layers of skirts here over top of it already, should I be adding more identical layers of that, or of netting or something? I don't want to add much more volume than this if possible. Thanks!

Or should I just be giving up and getting a long petti/smaller hoopskirt? I'm not exactly under any time constraints, thankfully.

Anime Expo is too god damn close for comfort. But so far I have gotten almost all of the Satin Stitching done on the back of my Date Masamune jacket, this was an old progress pic so everything is still pinned. I've gotten almost all of the armor bits cut out and shaped.I know I am going to have to do a shit ton of sanding and I am not looking forward to that. I didn't realize how much armor work I would be putting into this costume until I started putting it all on for the first time. But I think I'm doing okay for my first time working with EVA Foam.

That hemline is mighty unflattering. It cuts off right where your calves make this dramatic angle outward and it makes your legs look way bigger than they probably actually are. I'd suggest maybe seeing what an angled hem like pic related looks, maybe up to mini-skirt length or so. If that doesn't look right or you're not comfortable with it, I'd try adding some volume to the skirt if you have any extra fabric to add panels to it, so that the angle oft he skirt kind of balances out the angle your calves make at that length. And in the future... I'd just suggest trying to avoid that length, I see this all the time and it drives me nuts.

Do these count as a WIP? I got some glasses because I figured it would be super hot in LA for Anime Expo, so I wanted some sunglasses I could wear that were relatively cosplay related. Made some stockings using Yumi King's stocking tutoria [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xm6KHTB9bSA].l I know a lot of people don't like her, but compared to other tutorials, I was able to follow this the best. Probably because it is so simplified. The only thing I was lacking were more opaque tights and stretch thread, but I was able to stretch the stockings enough while sewing them shut with the elastic that I didn't need some.

These are the first ones I have eveer made. Originally I planned to just wear tights, but it didn't feel in character to me and it started bugging me the more I put the idea into my head that I would be fine with it. I also hemmed the school girl skirt and made that matching knot holder with the leftover 3" fabric that I hemmed off.

My goal is to have at least the dress ready for Animefest. Stretch goal is to have the armor. There's plenty of time, but other parts of my life also demand my time (Like training for my first half marathon. Super excited. Super terrified.) and I've never done armor before.

Thankfully, Saber is a popular character and people have put up patterns and stuff for the armor, so I shouldn't have too much trouble, but I just don't have the armor making experience to say for sure.

There also seem to be a ton of new materials I could use compared to when I made my last costume a few years ago. Gotta study!

You seem mad for no reason and thats fine, but you actually do need to sew them. I am not an expert seamstress, but I have had the trouble of trying to make thigh highs out of tights before and unless you sew them they start tearing and the seams will shoot down to the feet asap with tears as well.

>>8434641
I plan to iron everything. This is my first time trying to make thigh highs that will stay in place. I made some a last year, but forgot to sew them at the top because I didn't know you had to and they just shredded after the convention because it wasn't help together. I used elastic like in the tutorial because that made the most sense to me and that held them up really nicely compared to just throwing them on since they would roll down. They aren't perfect, but considering I have never tried this type of way of making them [meaning with the elastic] I am very happy with how they turned out.

Im not really sure how to starch something.. A tutorial would be nice please. It won't make the fabric super stiff will it?

You starch the pleats by spraying them with spray starch and then ironing them in place so the heat of the iron evaporates the water in the starch solution, just leaving the starch. And yes, the pleats will be somewhat stiff, but you want that to happen, because otherwise you won't get the neat, parallel pleats that Taiga's skirt has.

Pic related is a pleated skirt I made after ironing and starching -- it really makes the skirt look a lot cleaner.

Should I hang it after or just do it at the hotel when I get to AX? I'm going to have to pack it, but if it holds like this would it be okay in the suitcase? Im so sorry for all the questions! I don't usually do this stuff that often, so Im pretty clueless.

>> No.8435047

>>8434995
Yep, that's exactly what I use. I usually do a first pass of starching & ironing at home, do my best only to fold the skirt along the vertical axis when I put it in my suitcase (ie don't fold perpendicular to the pleats), and then touch it up once I get to the hotel.

For future reference, I like to do the ironing & starching of the pleats right after I initially pleat them (ie after hemming the fabric and pinning the pleats but before adding the zipper or waistband). I dunno how much of a difference it makes, but I think my pleats look better that way. Hope that helps!

Depends on what it is a blend of and what the ratio is. Most clothing fabrics have a bit of polyester in them because it prevents wrinkling when washed. If it's 90% polyester and 10% lycra that's all synthetic, but 70-90% cotton and 30-10% polyester (or around there) is fairly common and will be fine.

Anyways, here's the arm braces, or whatever those are called. Made of the same stuff I've used for the other things I've posted.

Also, here's an interesting technique I've learned for making anything look dirty and used: spray little splotches of black spraypaint onto it, and then use some "texture" spraypaint (like the kind that gives the look of sand or grainy texture), and then quickly use a damp rag to wipe it up and smudge it around. It makes for a nice ashen, dirty look, like it's been slightly burned, left in the sun and covered in grime. It's pretty quick and simple to do, too.

I'm going solo, unfortunately :(
I'm in the unfortunate position of being a little too north of the nearest city to have to many cosplay friends nearby that it's convenient to get together with to cosplay. I wish I had a San, tho!

Uh.. Anon who explained to me how to starch.. I tried. It is much better than what it was. Im going to be hanging it in the car on the way to Anime Expo and then re-iron/starch when I get there for any touchups. I know its isn't perfect, no one ever taught me how to iron, but it looks so much better thanks to you advice. Thank you so much!

Buckling down (pardon the pun) on Asuka Kazama from Tekken. Made her belt last night -- the green stars and grommets will wait until I've got the jumpsuit made and can figure out the placement. Still need to prime and paint the worbla bit on the end.

Melted a bit and made no progress on this thing til now. It's coming out better than the old version but still not how I'd like it to be. AWA's in two months and I need to make other costumes so it needs to get finished.

Got some more modeling done yesterday, have a long weekend ahead of me to get a mannequin made, start patterning out the soft parts.
