fairy kei specific threads usually die pretty quickly. Is there anyone here who actually wears it? Or just casual admirers?

>> No.8409672

>>8409625
I noticed that yeah, these threads die pretty quickly. It's probably because there isn't a lot of drama in the fairy kei community, and it's usually pretty hard to fuck it up. (not saying it hasn't been done, just less common than lolita) Also fairies (is that even the word) aren't usually as catty as the lolitas. And yeah, I do wear fairy kei. I wish these threads lasted longer.

That really sucks. I've only worn it twice or thrice because I mainly wear gyaru and lolita, but it's still a really fun fashion. I feel like most fairy kei coords are a bit off, especially on tumblr, but there's not really a feeling of any ~elitists~ like in lolita and nobody really wants to nitpick, so it just goes on.

>> No.8409806

>>8409625
I want to start wearing it. I've been a fan of it for 5 or so years now but I've never worn it because I am afraid to wear so many pastels at once.

>>8409794
I agree a lot of fairy kei feels off but I like it. It has that imperfect vibe old school Lolita used to have. Personally I don't care about outfits looking 100% perfect, it's almost impossible to look perfect unless you really dedicate most of your time and resources to one fashion style.

Sine this thread isn't really very active, can I ask what you would tell a beginner who's hasn't started yet but wants to? I'd like to have a few fairy kei outfits with pieces I can mix and match. I appreciate any advice you have. <3

>> No.8409872

>>8409806
hmm, I know this advice seems kinda off with all the lolitas on here, but bodyline is your friend. You can get cheap cutsews (esp now, 1000 yen for some) pettis and bloomers to wear. Really though, don't be afraid of pastels! I've never bought secondhand, but check out fair kei sales on facebook. Also, Fairy-tips on tumblr has great resources!

It's great that you started! Always happy to see a new fairy~

As for learning fairy kei, I have to say the first thing is applicable to all fashions. Simply being absorbed in the fashion, seeing outfit shots or looking at stock photos, will improve your coordinating skills. It's very interesting the amount of knowledge that can be absorbed without words.
But as for written things:
> Petticoats/panniers aren't a necessity. If you are wearing them, always check that your underwear isn't showing through. Puff them up nicely before leaving, and bloomers can always be thrown under for some additional figure.
> Legwear is super important! Fairy kei loves its colors, so don't be afraid to be extra colorful with your legs.
> Bigger is better with fairy kei jewelry. Large chunky rings? 3-5 inch resin necklaces with dangling charms? Triple bracelets? All good.
> Platforms exist, but aren't too popular in the fashion. Many people are wearing tea parties and pastel sweet lolita shoes, but thicker sneakers paired with slim-fitting tights is classic fairy.
> Hair can vary from casual to fancy. Don't be afraid to play around with yours.
> The fairy kei silhouette is frumpy on top and slim-fitting on the bottom. You'll find male fairy kei wearers might have puffy pants, but slim tights or socks. Tight crop tops, even pastel, don't fit the fashion.

As for building a new wardrobe:
> Outerwear: loose cardigan, semi-fitted casual jacket, and oversized hoodie/varsity jacket (the second is currently trending)
> lots n lots of pastel tees!
Can get these anywhere, but for an extra touch, you can buy one of those milklim detachable collars in pastel colors to plop on.

> petticoat, bloomers, and slim pastel legwear.
Panniers and bloomers you're better off getting from bodyline, milklim, 6%, taobao, etc. but just basic slim legwear is obtainable in the average basics store. For an extra touch, bobon21 on taobao has some really nice legwear options that would work great in toned down fairy kei (like heart cut out pants)
> Patterned socks/tights
Leggings work fine too in fairy kei, and can look cute with semi-clashing patterns (star themed tights in bluexpink and polka dot socks in bluexgreen). Like earlier, be sure to have some section of leg slim-fitting.
> Chunky sneakers, boots and nice flats.
Boots in fairy kei tend to be chunkier than gyaru and lolita, but not quite rough. Think of rain boots- wide but not messy. Sneakers and leather/pleather shoes explained earlier.
> Lots of mix and matchable necklaces, rings, bracelets and headwear.
Accessories are really what pushes normal pastel fashion to fairy kei. Don't be afraid to go to a party store and snatch up the packs of cheap jewelry- so long as you don't wear more than 4 at a time, it's all good. Bracelets tend to be elastic type, and piled, but a good chain type would be a nice statement piece. Necklaces should be rather large, as they often get drowned out in the details otherwise. Hair accessories are as far out as you want them to be. Other items like chokers, garters, masks, etc. can be added, but aren't necessarily for a versatile wardrobe.
> At least two bags: one shaped, one tote
This is a general jfashion thing, where the shaped bag is too small to fit anything so colorful totes are added. Buttons and brooches can be used to jazz up these items. If you're lucky enough to snatch one of Milk's giant heart bags, then just the one will be enough.

(sorry for how long this is turning out to be)

Basic fairy kei colors:
Pinks, yellows, white.
Pastel or muted blues, purples, orange and green.
Darker versions of the above color as well as black and other variations can be used, but should be used in small doses. If it's something like the elastic of a bracelet, the cord of a necklace, or maybe like a bow on a graphic design on a tee shirt, it doesn't matter.

> Two appearance rule
Every color used should appear twice, but usually thrice. Try to use it in two main pieces and one accessory. Ex- pastel blue bunny on t shirt is paired with blue headbow and blue striped socks.

> 80's influence
Not as big a deal as it was in the beginning of the fashion. But inspiration from cute characters is still huge in the fashion. Pokemon, Disney, mahou shoujos, etc. can really push a meh outfit into fairy kei realm.

I... think that's it for now? Hopefully? Never realized before today typing this up that fairy kei is quite complex. Hope this all helped!

Don't worry about it being long, it's helpful. I'm pretty familiar with the fashion but it's always a bit hard to figure out where to start and what's the best way to do things when first starting. The two/three color appearance rule is an interesting one but useful, I think it makes it easier to ensure an outfit is balanced. I'll have to keep that in mind for other jfashion styles as well.

Btw, anyone know where i can find knee length or a bit above the knee skirts (NO pettis) for fairy with an elastic that don't make me feel unconfortable? I find only too short skirts like below 40 cm. I'm not fatty chan, just having a 71 cm waist (tfw pear shaped) and most elastics make me feel i'm suffocating, even if listing says waist is over 80 max fit.

This is a good example. One of the (many) things that bugs me about this co-ord is that the general feel of a fairy kei outfit is 'light and fluffy'. You can't just throw on all of the pink stuff at Walmart and call it a day. To me at least, the shape of the clothing matters just as much as the color.

Well, the problem is that a lot of people confuse fairy kei with pop kei. Which isn't that strange considering they both started at the Spank! shop.

If your coord is more neon/bright than pastel, or has way to much pop cult reverences, It's pop kei.
Pop kei also doesn't necessarily have to have a light/fluffy look.

However, a bad coord is a bad coord. Please leave the bad 80s/90s shit home and only take the good things from that era Tumblr.

This is a mix of fairy kei and cult party kei. Both use pastels and have a light floaty scheme, and as both have used darker pieces in small amounts, it can be hard to distinguish. The hairstyle in this, tight braids, and the peignor really make this fairy kei to a mix between the two. The bright colored socks and thick chunk of white in the shoes further separate the look from traditional fairy kei, and while not quite pushing it to the cult party kei direction, makes it easier to distinguish.
>>8416184 on the other hand is still very fairy kei. The colors all all general pastels as usual, but the fluffy feeling of the clothing and hair (with the pompom hairties, fluffy jacket and scarf) paired with the rather textured totes (which is more frequent in cult party) makes it distinctly fairy kei, and not at all cult party kei. The polka dot skirt pattern is still very uch fairy kei.
>>8416186
Can also overlap in multiple styles. it can be related to fairy kei, larme, cult party, etc. Gingham is a very popular trend worldwide in warmer weather, and the fluffy angel piece came in a metamorphose lucky pack, as well as featured heavily in larme kei brands. The skirt seems to be most like larme or cult party, but can still work in fairy kei.

While the giant hello kitty bow ring and the makeup is reminiscent with fairy kei, the rest doesn't it. Graphic tees work in fairy kei, but they should be paired with some brooches, collars or a cover up to make it more than just a graphic tee
.>>8415238
Explained well. Pastels, but not light and floaty. Obviously influenced to some degree and could pass off as a jfashion to some, but not fairy kei.
>>8415554
The silhouette is wrong with this. The petticoat looks a bit too big, and as already said, the legwear is wrong. I have to say the shirt+skirt combo is the biggest offender. The shirt doesn't fit the light and airy look of fairy kei. With a switch to a comfy pullover, removal of the blue necklace, the top part of this could be casual fairy.

It's much more blurred in the western hemisphere because most of the people who actively follow the fashion are either
1) attention lovers who tag eVERYTHING fairy kei, lolita, decora, pop kei, spank!, etc.
2) people who don't post anything online at all
or 3) newbies who think 1 is amazing and follow all the wrong steps.

The best thing for you to do is actually post real fairy kei stuff, either coordinates or collages, and generate some enthusiasm for genuine fairy.

Usually the top has to be balanced with the bottom. If it's a tee with fitted shorts, it usually won't cut it. But if it's a tee underneath a fluffy hoodie riding halfway down the fitted shorts, the overall ensemble is balanced and fits under fairy kei. Wearing puffy bloomers or tutus is just an easy way to make the coordination easier.

Would this skirt work with fairy-kei? (I own the left colorway) Several anons in the thread I made about it suggested that it would even though I thought at first it was more otome-like. I'm relatively new to J-fashion outside of lolita though so I'm not quite the best judge but I always thought fairy-kei had to be pastels and pastels only and if there was any kind of a bright, darker color in there it can no longer work for the style?

Any fairy-kei coord ideas such as accessories and such that would go well with this skirt?

Bodyline petticoats are bad for lolita, but perfect for fairy kei. Most outfits with pannier in this thread have bodyline petticoats. As for accessories, bodyline has a few hair things, but taobao, etsy or storenvy would be your best bet for accessories/jewelry in general.

Some of bodyline panniers aren't lined, which results in the see through, while others are. You really just have to look at the picture and try to see if you can see the figure behind the layers of tulle- if you can, no lining, can't, then it's lined and no worries.

As for length, it differs on the petti. You can see measurements for length on the item description, so just measure down from waist/hip and see where it ends up. I own a bodyline petticoat for fairy kei and it hits just right on me from my waist, and I'm 5'6. So once again, depends on the petticoat.

In the case that you're stuck with a petticoat that's see through and too short, you can do three things. If it's see through, stick tights under it.Most tights have designs on the top, so it'll be a win-win situation. If it's sheer and short, you can either layer petticoats or stick bloomers under there.

Pic related is layered petticoats

Fairy kei isn't usually OTT though. It's pretty wearable actually since a lot of it is clothes with normie cuts in light pastels with cute motifs. It's not inherently an OTT style like decora is. Also the silhouette was wrong in the picture.

>> No.8494363

>>8494024
How was the silhouette wrong? Fairy kei can be OTT and fairy decora is a thing. I guess I get wanting a definite style but it feels like people come from lolita and go overboard with needing to make "rules"
