Seal the clay first (I use Collage Pauge because it self-levels a little bit, but various people have varying preferences) so it doesn't soak up the paint like a sponge. If you're looking for a standard metallic colour (silver, gold, sometimes black), you can get spray paints from a hardware store that leave a nice metallic sheen. If you're trying to achieve a non-standard metallic colour, after priming your clay, spray with a coat of silver or gold metallic, then spray your colour over that. There are also a LOT of spray glosses and finishes that will leave different effects.

You might want to give that thread a read-through, I BS'd the bit about priming with metallic paint and spraying over that; not sure if it would actually work. Rub n Buff will definitely give you a shiny surface though, and the same from glossy spray finishes.

My eyes are spinning from that turnaround. @_@
I'm guessing you'd want to interface the jacket to make the collar stand up? I think you should be able to fuse interfacing to it alright, especially if you trap the interfacing in seam/hem to keep it stable. I like the idea of using a nylon blend sports fabric (if there's one in the area, JoAnn has white sports-style fabric right now), but it also looks like it could be some sort of lined silk jacket.
Skirt: Purple tulle and/or chiffon bunched up underneath black sateen or black satin If you want to preserve the floaty skirt effect, a seagull wrote a tutorial about using wonderflex and heavy-duty interfacing:

Do most people interpret Jolyne's pants as leggings/tight pants or loose pants? I thought that they were more of loose pants, but I've seen a lot of people use tight pants/leggings for cosplaying Jolyne. I'd like to go the loose pants route, but I'm thinking that it might be more difficult to do the cutouts on the side of the leg in pic related that way.

From your picture, they look like skinny-jean-level tightness. But you'd still be able to interpret them as loose slim-fit pants; just interface around the holes or do a facing to keep them stiff and prominent (unless your fabric is stiff already).

>>8397719
I interpret your ref as having the ribbon sort of woven in and out around the hem (like a running stitch). You could measure and mark off the distance between the ribbon "appearances," sew a bunch of buttonhole-style slits, and thread one long piece of ribbon through.
>it's a little bizarre that the ribbon doesn't appear on the inside of the skirt, but I don't think the designers were thinking about real clothing when they designed that outfit
That's a super cute outfit, though - I love green and pink and brown as a colour scheme.

I'm having trouble getting my sleeves to fit properly. The fabric on the body keeps bunching up under the armpits and the sleeve kinda twists a little (or atleast looks like it) going down the upper arm. Is it because its too small somewhere?

>>8398222
This is super basic troubleshooting, but I've legit had to help three separate friends who thought sleeves were just rectangles before - you're using pic related (or some variant) as your sleeve base, yes?

If the fabric on the body is bunching under the armpits, it sounds like the armhole is too small. Does the bodice fit at the arms both when you have your arms up and when your arms are down by your sides?

If the sleeve is twisting, that might be because the sleeve cap isn't wide enough. Depending on how large your chest is (and thus how much your chest will be pushing out the armhole) and how large your biceps are, you might need to increase the amount of fabric "give" the front half of your sleeve pattern.

If it's none of those things, mind posting a picture of your sleeve attachment area?

Your sleeve cap might actually be too short!
>with your arms down at your side, imagine a line that starts at your armpit and -parallel to the ground- circles your bicep
>measure from the top of where your armhole is (when you have the bodice on), along the outside of your arm, down to that imaginary line
>sleeve cap should be that tall

If that doesn't work, post a picture of your bodice (namely, the armhole area) next to the sleeve pattern that you've made and I'll try to keep guessing at it. :)

Something I just noticed from your first picture with the patterns - your sleeve turns suddenly narrow once it hits the bicep part (when compared to the width of the sleeve cap). Is there a reason for that decrease?
In the pattern I posted in >>8398324, the base of the sleeve cap has a more gradual decrease towards the wrist, and it looks like your pattern in >>8398378 has a fast taper into the bicep. I think that's taking away some of the ease in the upper arm area, so the sleeve is eating into itself to try to accommodate for that. With a nonstretch fabric, a comfortable sleeve taper should extend smoothly from armpit (the width of the sleeve cap) down to wrist (whatever your desired final sleeve width is, plus accommodations for getting your hand through).

>>8398437
Knit jersey (it'll feel like super slippery t-shirt fabric) or mesh. You could probably also layer a few pieces of white tulle or netting. But no matter what you use, you'll still have a pretty limited field of vision (and it'll be blurry to all hell), so if you're wearing your mask to a convention, you should either keep it off when you're navigating hallways or have a buddy to be your handler and guide you around.

Try using sheet acrylic and a laser cutter. It won't be as sculpted, but it's easy and clean. Look for some resources in your area! Thats awesome! Yeah I will say my hand cramped so damn bad. But it was worth it! We used iron-on shimmer fabric to do the cape. Also I will say, you should add some fabric to the side of the cape, where it connects under the arms. Any of the fabrics that you use for the shirt part are going to generally be very fragile/easily snagged, and it will get snagged like hell on the sequins from the corset unless you a) leave an open space on the corset where your under arm part will hit or b) add the fabric. Which is what we did. The first shirt was ruined by the snags, so we realized the mistake and did the fabric add. A tiny bit of simple blue cotton worked and you can't see it when worn, really.

Also--you dont have to sequin the *entire* corset. The last two panels (where the eyelits are) can be left uncovered since they will be covered by your cape.

This is a bit of a request for general advice. I'm doing my second cosplay and I want to dip my toes into a bit of wig styling. I don't want to be the person in the fresh out of the bag wig.

1. how do i make a stand up collar for her cape?
2. how do i make her distressed tank top ?? I can only think of ghetto scissors which is prolly not a good idea
3. what fabric do you think her skirt should be? i was thinking denim but no one sells red denim skirts so im stuck.

Get a basic cape pattern from Simplicity/McCall/Butterick and they have hooded cape patterns. Apply heavyweight interfacing to the areas you want to stand and a bit below them as well for support.
Since you're a complete beginner, you don't have to worry too much about the tank top, as it is mostly hidden from view. Google "how to distress fabric" and use a material that won't fray badly when you wear it.
For the skirt, look around for dark red/burgundy denim. You can get a twill and line it for more weight. You can even get a heavyweight ponte knit since it looks like it needs to stretch over her butt when you sit down.

Hey everyone I'm casting a sword in silicon to make a clear version. Does anyone know a way to make a hole in the final product and still have the mold be able to come off?

Basically the guard and blade will be one piece, but the handle or grip rather will need a small hole to attach into since it will be a separate piece.

I'm not sure how to design the mold to basically have an indent for the handle to go into and still have the two pieces of silicon pull art.

Would very much like to avoid needing to drill the resin after its done as it could rough up the resin too much and generally be a pain in the ass.

I feel that a simple hole the size of a small rod or similar will fail you, if the sword has any decent length to it. You're going to put a lot of stress on it and it'll be prone to snapping.
If I understand you correctly, the handle/grip will also be transparent if so drill the hole in the master version. Make the two part mold with the hole already placed.

Another option is to sculpt them out of clay, make a mold, and pour tinted clear polyeurethane resin into said mold. Well I wanted to make more than one in case it gets banged up. Is there a good place to buy pink plexiglass?

The idea is the handle is PVC and I'm running a UV LED and battery on the inside and putting it into the guard/blade which will be transparent. I've seen one made of pink acrylic that was pretty cool, but fuck if I find a place to buy it some. Do have a saw that could cut it though if you have any ideas on a source for plexiglass or acrylic sheets that isn't like a giant 100 dollar white board.

>>8402591
That is what I was thinking about doing, but I don't know if the silicon halves will pull apart if they are going in a hole, assuming the seem is along the side of the blade. Unless the seam wasn't along the side of the blade, but rather between the guard and blade though that may be hard to do.

The hole could be up to 2in, the guard is thick. Blade is about 23in long. Maybe I should just fuck lighting up the prop with it being for first really complex piece and make it a solid transparent resin piece.

Or I could frost the outside with a piece of sandpaper and stick the UV light in a glove. Or make the whole hilt opaque. This makes my brain hurt.

Jotaro has the weirdest hat hair combo thing going on. His hat and hair kind of just blend together. Part 4 Jotaro's contrast is weirder since his hat a d hair aren't the same color.

If you're doing part three. You can kind of cut opens and shred the back of a student cap and kind of blend the hat and wig together.

Also how old is the kid? I have a friend cosplaying Jotaro and was thinking of cosplaying Holly and dressing my son in a Japanese preschool uniform since he's really young(which is why I was asking about the hat here >>8403294 )

I thought it'd be cute to have him be a preschool Jotaro.

I depends on what look you're trying to achieve. If its something where you're trying to be all one color, I would highly recommend that you try to find some way to use a zentai suit instead of using paint. If that's just not possible there's a number of ways you can achieve a full body color.

The best way would be to use airbrush. This will give you a uniform application and look the best. You'll need to get a compressor and airbrush guns, plus the paint you need (I think that ProAiir is pretty neat). This is the most expensive and most difficult way to do a full body paint (if you don't have the equipment or the knowledge of how to do it). ProAiir is very durable, and will last very well.

Next, you can use cake paint. Apply the paint with sponges (I use potter's sponges cut in half). There are lots of good paints on the market which include Wolfe FX, Diamond FX, Mehron (Paradise), Cameleon, and Kryolan (Aquacolor). There are other paints, but I'm not as familiar with them or they're not as effective as the ones I named.

You can also use PAX. PAX is acrylic craft paint mixed with Prosaide. You can buy it commercially or mix it yourself. I don't reccomend this method. Acrylic is non-toxic but not formulated to go on skin. If you use this please don't use it on your face. This stuff is a bitch to get off, often requiring rubbing alcohol which is extremely drying on your skin.

Whatever method you decide to do, it will look like shit if you just paint yourself one color (assuming that's what you're trying to do). You need to do highlights, shadows, muscle definition, etc. A full body paint will require hours of work, and you'll definitely need to enlist the help of your friends to get places you can't reach yourself. Whatever method you decide, learn how to seal your paint. You may need to get setting spray or powder. Test and practice your method before the day of the con. The more you practice the better your body paint will look.

Good luck.

Yes.

I'm assuming you're a guy. When you put make-up of any kind on, it sort of flattens your face (or other body features), which is why when we put on foundation, we also put on blush, bronzer, highlighers, etc. This will be true of full body paint too.

In pic related, the guy on the left has painted himself green. The guy is clearly muscular, but you can't make out some of the definition on his abs or chest, and it doesn't look nearly as dramatic as the contoured, muscle defined body paint on the right. So in order to look good, yes. you need it.

There are lots of places to get secondhand doujin/self/non-official pieces and it's about as legit as buying from Taobao (similar in quality as well). If you want official, buying online and having stuff shipped internationally is less effort than walking into a physical store.

Official sources include Cospa (Cospatio, GEE!Store) and Animate (ACOS). Cospatio will cost a pretty penny (~$400 for a uniform set) but highest quality stuff you can get. ACOS is manufactured in China and decent in quality, usually around $100-$150 for a set. Secondhand shops like K-BOOKS, Mandarake, or Mitsubado will have a mix of official and Chinese/circle/amateur costumes and pieces. You will need to spend time digging through their racks to find good deals and non-shitty costumes.

I know. That's why I was asking the question. None of the romper patterns I'm looking at come close. This is the closest I was able to find. I thought the easiest way to make what I'm trying to make is making a sweetheart top with elastic-less bloomers.

>>8406044
Yes I was talking about the waistband. Basically connecting the top and making an elastic-less waistband but I'm trying to avoid that. Something like picture related but with a sweetheart bust. I'm trying to wrap my head around trying to do it and how.

rompers don't have a waistband, i'm not entirely sure why you're asking about one. you have to cut it from a whole piece. your top image has princess seams while the bottom one doesn't, but has a defined chest piece. you'll either have to fit to your body shape or make it loose fitting.

Depends, Hard to say for sure. The flexible bit would be really hard to do, especially because of the weight at the end. I can't even begin to conceptualize it, but I'd say between 1-200 dollars.

I dunno, to me that kinda looks like ass. Didn't even try to do any dimensionality at all.

Acrylic should be sculpted like folded paper.

>Do have a saw that could cut it though if you have any ideas on a source for plexiglass or acrylic sheets that isn't like a giant 100 dollar white board.
Just go to a home depot or something.

>That is what I was thinking about doing, but I don't know if the silicon halves will pull apart if they are going in a hole, assuming the seem is along the side of the blade. Unless the seam wasn't along the side of the blade, but rather between the guard and blade though that may be hard to do.
You're talking about a two part mold. Trust me, not worth the trouble. Especially if you're only do it once.

So when you order/commission a cosplay, and it comes with broken parts here and there and is the wrong size even though you gave them the right measurements... are you allowed to jew the seller for a refund or something else like that or do you just not tell the seller about it and make alterations yourself?

basically this is what happened to me
>order a cosplay from a pretty reputable seller
>they have a size chart, I'm pretty close to a size S (my waist is 24, size S waist is 25) so I order size S instead of custom because I dont want to pay more
>receive cosplay, the rest of the costume fits fine but the waist fits up to like a 28-29 which makes it HUGE on me

Contact them and tell them that pieces are broken/falling apart. You can get a partial refund for that unless they offer to replace those parts.
As for the waist measurements, you can alter that yourself since it's not a big deal unless you want the seller to be responsible for it.

Start with reference pictures. Loki has had hundreds of costumes, narrow done which one you like the best.

Break down the costume into smaller chunks. Identify what pieces you need, what you can buy, what you can make, what you'll need to commission.

Determine a budget. Stick to the budget.

Determine a timeline. Add another month to your timeline.

Start Googling. "How to make a cape." "Loki cosplay headdress." Look on cosplaytutorial.com. Find patterns that are close to what you need. Figure out where to buy what you need.

Come back here if you have specific questions. "What fabric do you recommend for a cape?" "Which wig looks better for Loki?" "What's the best lightweight material to sculpt horns out of?"

People here are willing to help, but they're not going hand hold you through the whole process. Do some research and come back with specific questions.

It will be easier to purchase Akemi. Sora has a lot of parts, and can very easily get very expensive and/or very tacky. Akemi is more streamlined so you'll have a better chance of it looking ok if you purchase it, plus there are less pieces so it's better for your wallet.

The sad thing is where I'll buy the price is the same, so doubted, though I go out a little cheaper Homura because for Sora would need to buy the shoes and the keyblade, but I think the more popular character more people want to know and ask you pictures, and maybe genderbend Homura can't be know by people (sorry for my english)

Akemi because KH2 Sora will require you to commission someone very experienced to make a nice wig, prop, and costume. Find out if there are any meet ups in your area?
Normally there are groups in main cities so if you live far out it may be difficult, but if you just have a look on facebook for groups in your area and see if there are any meet ups coming up you could go to you should be fine.
Even if you just go to a lolita comm and ask people there if they know of any cosplay groups maybe?

I'm in a bind.
I have absolutely no idea what fabric to use for Cloud. My local Joanns has nothing that looks remotely close and if I cant find something i'm going to have to chop the arms off a turtleneck sweater and hope i can find some fabric that is similar in color too it for the pants.

So /cgl/ what fabrics would you use to make a Cloud Strife costume? Mainly the top but if you have suggestions for the pants that'd be great.

Soon I'm going to cosplay a vampire and I want to wear fake fangs but I'm worried that my real messed up teeth fangs will make it look weird. Obviously I can't wear fake fangs on the designated teeth (canine) because they're jacked up. So should I try and put them on the teeth before my canines or just forget about fake fangs and use my real ones?
I'm worried that two pair of fangs might look weird but I'm also worried that my real fangs arnt the right kind for a vampire they're more for trolls.

So I never cosplayed before, but I feel like I want to try for next years anime convention when it rolls around. But having no skills relating to cosplaying I'm not sure where to begin, so I thought I might try to start at something that looks a little simple, and the first thing I thought of was Yang from RWBY, but being a dude I can't rock the bike shorts or cleavage window like she can. I can get a general idea of where to begin with this, and I got an entire year so I have plenty of time to make mistakes and learn if anything, though I am a little torn trying to do her original outfit or her new outfit.

Though I do like her outfit more then the original but I'm not sure how I would genderbend that one

Hey there.
I'm doing my first sailor moon cosplay in August.
and I'm having a dilemma with the shoes.

I could either buy a pair of red boots and alter it myself. or buy pre made cosplay shoes.

The stilettos are the cheapest option (around $30 with shipping), and would help the fact that I'm waaaaay to fucking short to cosplay sailor moon in the first play. (I'm 5'0 and she looks like she 6'5 for christs sake.)
But they look extremely slutty and the front of the heel just doesn't look accurate. so. eh.

The gogo boots are around $40 which is also another option, I'm just not a fan of the chunky looking heels.

and the third option would to be to drop anywhere from 60-80$ on pre made cosplay boots. My apprehension with this is that I will scammed or they won't come on time. Everyone selling them "custom" makes them and uhg that just doesn't sound trust worthy ya know?

any opinions would be appreciated. and alternative options would be even better.
