to get the ball rolling, i received a $50 giftcard for sephora and was wondering what would be the best bang for my buck from there. i don't mind spending over the $50 because i know it's all high end cosmetics, but what are your favorite products?

Reposting from last thread -- what are some good BB cream recommendations for dry skin? My skin is quite dry and most foundations/BBs become flaky and gross after some time of wear. I managed to lessen it by switching to more moisturizing skincare and using a primer, but I still turn into a lizard after a few hours. Right now I'm using Missha Perfect Cover and I feel like that might also be playing a part due to how high coverage it is.

It's entirely possible that your old products didn't jive with your skin, or that you were just clogging things up.

Anyway, if you're dry (and not combo), tinted moisturizer or even watery American-style CC cream might be a good bet for you. I'm combo with lizard patches, and Stila CC stays unpatchy (... but oily. And sallow) where Tarte Amazonian Clay foundation or Smashbox BB flake.

Some of the stuff I recommend:

From Too Faced:

Candlelight Glow highlighter- but only if you're on the fair side. It will look chalky if you're olive toned. You HAVE to be light handed with it because a little goes a long way and it's easy to put too much on. If you just dust it on, the highlights it leaves literally looks like candlelight.

Their melted lipstick. I only have one sample tube, but I like it a lot. It's really pigmented and it's halfway between a regular lipstick and one of those "liquid to matte" lip colors. I just think it's easy to apply and get the right amount of color that I want. The sample tube I have is a brighter color than I would normally use, but I just squeeze a little out and the fuzzy tip makes it easy to spread a little color and buff it on my lips. I'd buy more of these, but I have too many lip products right now.

I also like their first chocolate pallet, their bronzers, and their sweetheart blush.

Urban Decay's setting spray is pretty much a staple.

The Sephora brand pro bent liner brush #23 makes it super easy to do fine eye liner wings. The beauty blender is also actually a pretty good makeup tool.

I like Besame's brightening violet powder. It's kind of expensive for the amount of product you get, but it smells good and it's feather light. I feel like it helps blend my contouring together when I've finished my makeup.

I like Benefit's benetint. I bought it on impulse and thought it was the dumbest buy ever, but it's actually really useful for when I'm in a rush and want to put a touch of makeup on. It's a lip and cheek tint that smells like roses.

Tarte's BB tinted primer dries can help give more coverage to your foundation or whatever you use, but it has enough tint in it to give a decent amount of coverage by itself. I like to mix mine that is slightly darker than my skin tone with BB creams that are usually a little too light.

>>8334404
I always wanted to try various besame products purely for the vintage gimmick. Whenever their company was just starting, I requested an item catalogue. Eventually, I received it in a poster tube. I found the poster tube in my room earlier this year (Febuary-ish) Turns out there was a faux-vintage poster inside.... That thing was sitting unknown for years in my own room. Crazy.

I really prefer Korean cosmetics. I tried western brands like Max Factor and MAC but I somehow get breakouts from them. I'm Korean so I pretty much prefer local cosmetics, and also because they're cheaper. Anyways, my favorites would be:

Holika Holika's Aqua Petit Jelly BB Cream - doesn't give that icky feeling, it dries out like powder (but I still use powder after) good for tan and fair skin. Doesn't give much coverage than actual foundation, so it's for those who really don't have much to hide other than the occasional dark circles

Hanyul Rich Effect Cream Powder - it's huge and I've been using this for 2 years, it feels nice on the skin and works on fair and tan Asian skin (I tend to switch between fair and tan quickly)

Innisfree Eco Gel Liner - the consistency is perfect and last until the end of the day, really hard to get it off, sweatproof/waterproof based on my experience

Bit of an odd question:
I've got a very 'classical' long face (think pre-Raphaelite paintings, pic related with thin lips, long nose, no manjaw and considerably less pretty hair) and I'm not sure I can pull off cute and youthful.

What should I put emphasis on and what should I play down, makeup-wise? Most of the makeup I've tried so far made me look like a horse, especially with the current bushy browvangelism people seem to be pushing onto everyone.

I'm just not sure which direction I should be heading towards because my face is neither manly enough to warrant Morticia Addams-type makeup and arrangements nor feminine enough to work with cute, flirty makeup and hair.

I asked this in the last thread but I didn't see any responses-

So you have a man face because all the models were men they just happened to put boobs on?

You can re-contour your face with concealer. Broaden the apples of your cheeks, this will make your face seem rounder and more feminine only shadow the edge with only on shade darker because you're not a Queen. Brighten your eyes and draw attention to them with your shadows. Sculpt your chin by brightening it if it's angular, darkening if it's chubs.

Pic related is both male and female types and will help with the differences. Faces from that time were very different because of the patriarchal rules for having artists models through the church, I wasn't trying to offend you but if I did, I hope the advice helps anyway.

>>8334666
Dimples are caused by the muscular facial structure. The skin is being pulled between a gap in your facial muscles when they contract. Spend some time making faces in a mirror and smiling differently. The bigger the smile the bigger the dimples. A pleasant neutral might be your best since it bothers you, but dimples are super cute imo.
You can always have the gap filled... usually this takes surgery though.

Wasn't that Michaelangelo? Because many of the pre-Raphaelite paintings portrayed very beautiful women (Ophelia for example) but if I posted one of those I'd get shredded to bits on /cgl/ because I sound too 'conceited' or whatever.

And no, not manface, just a kinda long face. Think Florence Welch. Thanks for the advice though, I'll definitely put it to good use! Though I was also asking what kind of an 'aesthetic' I should be aiming for, if that makes sense.

Dimples Anon here. I think I'm just stupidly self conscious of them. I feel like since they're so deep / noticeable, it doesn't make my face soft enough for lolita. I'm the only person in my family with them (no one knows where they came from. I always assumed it was a recessive gene on one side of the family) but it's nothing I'd get surgery over. I practice trying to find the happy medium but whenever I am really excited or grinning they happen, so I was hoping some kind of make up trick would make them look less deep. (Every result online I found was how to make them more deep/ opposite goal.)

Thank you though! I'll keep practicing with different smiles (or keep trying hard to convince myself they look okay)

Urban Decay setting spray is a must, especially if you live in a hot/ humid climate where you sweat a lot.
Stila's Stay All Day pen eyeliner is amazing. Wore it to a foam party concert thing and 80% of it was still on when I left which is amazing considering I usually come away with no make-up on.
Most anything by Make-up Forever. I use their foundation and some of their eyeliners and they're amazing.
Kat Von D's lipsticks are great and come in great colors, particularly for gothic. That's about the only good thing she has though, imo.
GlamGlo is great too. Surprised I don't hear more about it here. It's not the miracle face mask that everyone says it is, but it's a good thing to keep around for when you need serious exfoliation (if you can afford it). Be careful if you have sensitive skin though.
All I can think of at the moment? Hope you find something you like anon.

I have a face like this. Immediately after showering, I put a layer of jojoba oil on my face (blot off excess) and/or a really intense moisturizer (pic related, it's the one I have, I stock up during Clinique's annual super-freebie-set promotion which I think is still going on). This nips 80% of the problem in the bud. Works best if I shower at night, though. Never before doing this had I ever woke up in the morning and been inclined to call my face "glowing". It's a huge confidence boost. Then when I do makeup I start with a layer of moisturizer again and follow with Clinique Even Better foundation.

My first makeup ever was Clinique but in my teens I tried MAC and and several drugstore brands, I wanted to get away from "what my mom wears". Now I'm back to it because it just feels so much better than anything else and doesn't make me break out.

Sorry that's not a BB recommendation but there you go. My $7.99 bottle of oil from trader joes has lasted me a long ass time so far. So has my $$$ moisturizer, even though I tend to really slather it on more than necessary.

From top to bottom, 1-11. I white-balanced the swatches as well. I also included a normal, american foundation--Tarte Amazonian Clay Foundation in Ivory.

The BB creams are /far/ lighter than the swatches lead on to be-- they're way sheerer when put on the face, so they're less dark. I could maybe do some applied swatches, too, but that would require far more time (and more body space.)

I have super oily lids as well anon. My eyes are also very watery because I live in a land of year-round allergies, so my eyeliner is always a bitch for me to keep in place (especially at the corners). For me, my makeup's staying power hinges less on which primer I use and more on applying a thin basecoat of white shadow first. It's such a silly little thing but it makes such a huge difference for me; on days where I don't, my shadow and eyeliner are travelling within the first couple of hours...but since I've been using a white pressed powder shadow to essentially dry my lids out before applying color and it has made a huge difference. Like, flawless eyes after 12 hours of wear, then getting drunk, and then sobering up.

dude, I have watery eyes and wore it while I was with my ex(who made me cry a lot) and it was awful! I do not recommend it for a waterproof eyeliner. When my eyes weren't leaking it stayed on fine but I would prefer Urban Decays liquid liner for sure (still not as waterproof as I would like)

How do I stop looking like ass in every photo?
Every single photo that is taken of me I look like shit in. Usually ages me 10 years, my mouth disappears and my skin always looks greyish and ashy, in some photos I straight up look vaguely Middle-Eastern even though I have red hair and relatively warm-toned pale skin. Needless to say it looks so awkward in photos with the hair and all, but completely normal in real life.

How do I remedy this? I don't have a single flattering photo in any coord and usually have to crop out my face.

I think these things take practice, especially learning to position your head and pose flatteringly for photos. It's earned with practice and figuring your face out that it becomes an insurance against weird photos of yourself.

Invest! Do it! I promise you won't be disappointed. I have his shade Queen Supreme and I have to resist not wearing it every single day because it's the most comfortable liquid matte lipstick I've ever used. It lasts all day. I drink coffee with it, I eat large meals, I give kisses and it still looks beautiful. The application is a dream, I love the formula because once you apply you have about a minute of wiggle room to go back and clean up any mistakes. I also own black velvet from limecrime and that was one of my complaints that once it was on your lips you better have precision any little hiccups and you're screwed.(Limecrime has a much more watery formula too in my opinion) Plus I like JS applicator much more it has a point at the tip that makes crisp lines a breeze, no liner needed. The only thing I'll warn you about is if you don't exfoliate and moisturize your lips before you'll look like a dry cracked mess. It says i can mix the magicolour with the liquidset but it doesnt have a ratio

How much do I use of the magicolour to cover my face anyway ( ifugre just test it but i only have 29ml)

I bought the other things because I figured i may need them for contouring? or shading?

Should I get some black makeup as well? I still dont have a design for the face yet but I dont have a sharp chin so to speak so I figured I could fake it with make up illusion after I practice (Btw i bought this stuff to practice with)

It says on the magicolour to use a brush or sponge does anyone have any recommendations for make up kits I live in aus

Any primer/setting spray recommendations for sweaty/hot skin? I know this sounds gross as fuck but I overheat really easily and skin products often end up melting off my face as soon as I start riding my bike or leave the house when it's more than 20 degrees Celsius. When I'm not wearing any kind of product it's not so bad at all but when I am, it literally starts dripping off my nose and chin and getting into my eyes. The annoying thing is that my skin is actually rather dry so products intended to mattify oily skin aren't good for me.

I've tried a setting powder by Too Faced but that didn't really work for me. It made me look powdery and dry before I started sweating/melting and afterwards settled into visible little clumps in the contours of my face. I'll look into the Urban Decay setting spray anon mentioned. Should I try the "All-Nighter" or "Anti-Shine"?

Help, I'm starting to get angry at makeup.

My foundation clumps. Really, really fucking badly. I've never seen anyone's makeup clump as badly as mine does. I have an entire shelf full of different brands and types of foundations, and they all do this.

This is the only application routine I can do without it fucking up:

> Wash face with Cetaphil
> Moisturize with half CeraVe + aloe gel mix
> Wait a few minutes
> Apply Elf's mineral primer
> Wait a few minutes
> Apply concealer
> Pat on translucent powder over concealer
> Wait a few minutes
> Apply CC cream
> Set with powder and Elf's Mist and Set spray

At this point, it's okay; my blemishes are fairly concealed and my skin tone is a bit more even, but if I try to take it a step further and apply foundation, the clumping happens.

How the fuck do I get it to stop clumping?

>> No.8354866

>>8354783
Normally you don't set your face with anything until you're done foundation as well, so try skipping powdering after your concealer and cc cream next time, and set with powder + spray after you're completely done. That's my guess as to what's making your makeup clump, but sometimes it could also be because one or more of your products just don't mix together. Also, how do you usually apply your foundation? With a brush/fingers/sponge?

>> No.8354879

>>8354866
I get the same result, even if I apply foundation after primer. I figured having a set layer under the foundation might help.

I usually apply my foundation with a stiple brush. I've done it with a sponge and get the same result. A damp sponge makes it apply okay for maybe half an hour, then it clumps up.

I've tried so many combinations of foundations, primers, and moisturizers. I feel like I have to be missing something.

one thing that can help is putting your concealer on AFTER your foundation. The act of putting on foundation actually tends to wipe your concealer away from your blemishes and as a result you need to put on more foundation and so on. Also, are you trying to wear CC cream and foundation? Because it is more of an either/or kind of thing. Also what >>8354866 said. You shouldn't powder your concealer if you are putting it on before your foundation. The powder will make your makeup clumpy and cakey.

My routine if I am wearing concealer
>Clean face
>moisturize
>let the moisturizer soak in
>Primer
>Let that set
>BB cream
>concealer carefully blended in
>blush, contour, eye makeup, etc.
>Powder OR setting spray OR nothing at all. Powder if I am feeling oily, setting spray if it is hot out and I am going to sweat, nothing if it is a normal day and I am not going to be out for more than 4 hours.

I battled with cakey looking makeup all the way into my 20's and the biggest turning point for me was learning to put my concealer on after my foundation. Just about all the makeup videos and advice you will hear says to put it on before, but you really want to get a concealer that is the same color as your foundation and do it after. You will end up needing less concealer and it will do a better job of concealing overall. This obviously does not include tinted concealers like green and yellow, as they will not blend in correctly over your foundation.

you should give it a try, then you too can even!

But yes I know, you do literally hear the opposite of what I am saying everywhere, but trust me when I say it is a good way to limit how much product you put on your face. Give it a try, you will see I am not stupid. Of course foundation application is one of those things that you should do the way you feel personally works best, I personally cannot get even application without using my fingers and I don't like how much product is wasted in brushes and sponges.Other people have different results!

The only thing I insist everyone give a chance is concealer over foundation. If you can find a concealer that matches your foundation it is absolutely the way to go!

When you do it just use a bit of the magicolor and if it's thick add some liquiset until you're happy with it. Dark brown would be better than black or it will look a bit muddy probably. What do you mean by "clump"? Any chance you can take a picture and just hide your eyes and nose? Powder always goes last. If you mean "pilling," that's the product balling up underneath your makeup. It would have to do with your moisturizer or primer. You're either applying them too thick, waiting too long for them to dry, or both. If that's not the case, then it may be that the moisturizer is creating a film on your face, in which case you might want to try a different moisturizer. I think the only reason the primer would do that is if it's old or defective, but my bet is on the moisturizer. Have you tried not waiting between applying everything, and not using powder between any steps? I would do that first and if it doesn't work, try a different moisturizer.

If you just mean it looks thick and gross on your face, I would also in the case try a different moisturizer, and just make sure you're only applying a very thin layer of everything.

Too faced makes a glitter glue that I use on my greasy days. Makes it harder to apply the eye-shadow, but once its on, it stays. The glitter glue is very tacky so it's a bit harder to blend, it feels like I have to just pat on my eye-shadow over the entire lid, whereas with the other primers not being so tacky the brush can evenly go over the whole lid. But I switched to Jordana's 12 Hour Made to Last eyeliner (gel pencil) and NYC High Definition Liquid liner (liquid pen) and haven't had a single issue. I find that I have to prime my eye and apply either Nyx jumbo pencil or eyeshadow to keep the NYC liquid in place but I also have oily eyelids so that's to be expected. The Jordana stuff (Milani makes an identical product but I can't remember the name) is like a godsend, though. I have worn it without primer or shadow underneath, and it never budges once it sets (even on my worst watery eye allergy days, and even through crying).

>> No.8355423

Check to see how many of your products have dimethicone/silicone in them. Applying too many products with silicone in them on top of each other often causes makeup to "clump." CC and BB creams usually aren't intended to be worn with a primer underneath so this may be your problem. Like others suggested, don't put powder on under your foundation; powder always goes on after all foundation has been applied.

You could be trying to apply too much product--use no more than a pea size amount of primer, rub it in with your fingertips. The same goes for foundation--try dotting small amounts along your forehead, chin, cheeks, and nose, and then blend out with a dry makeup sponge. It's always easier to apply more as needed than to try to take excess off.

You may also be using too heavy a moisturizer before your makeup and/or not letting it sink in long enough before applying your makeup. A lightweight gel moisturizer is usually best before makeup application, but if you don't let your skin absorb the moisturizer it doesn't matter what product you use. You may want to try waiting maybe 15 minutes between your skincare and your makeup to see if that makes a difference. If you don't exfoliate, exfoliating your skin will help, too.

If none of this works, you may want to try using a cream or powder foundation instead of liquid.

Roseroseshop is a nice website for asian skincare/makeup. Ebay is also a good place to get them, providing if you check the seller ratings and make sure it's sold from Korea.

Amazon is also good if you want it quickly, but only buy it from Prime sellers. Amazon takes skincare/makeup sellers, among other categories (like wine and alcohols) very seriously, and will most of the time, prime sellers will not sell fakes. It'll probably be somewhat more expensive than ebay or RRS if you buy it off of Amazon, but you'll at least get it faster if that's of priority.

RRS: Cheap, and safe but shipping is expensive, and usually takes a somewhat long time.
Ebay: Generally cheap, have to check on sellers to be safe, shipping is usually cheap or free. Make sure to cross reference prices to be sure it's not too good to be true.
Amazon: Usually more expensive, generally safe if the seller is prime, very fast shipping time. (especially if you have prime.)

Before you do anything else, decide what your design to look like. Are you going to just paint your face red? Are you going to exaggerate your features at all? Look online, there are lots of people who have done devil face paints before. Using them for inspiration, mix and match what you like from each design.

Next, get comfortable using your paints. For cake make-up, you'll want to use a combination of sponges and brushes as the make-up packaging suggested. You can use make-up sponges (those triangular shaped sponges at every drug store/beauty store). I learned to face paint with potter's sponges cut in half (you can find them at craft stores, they're circle shaped sponges that are less dense than make-up sponges). I also learned to paint with acrylic/watercolor paintbrushes (also found at craft stores). This is mostly for line work, so if you're not planing on doing any harsh lines, you probably don't need them. I've seen people do neat things combined liquid make-up with cake make-up, so if you're feeling fancy, you can use the Magicolour as the "water" to wet your cake make-up. Otherwise, wet your sponge, wring most of the water out of the sponge and rub it across the cake until you pick up the pigment. Use a patting motion (called stippling) rather than a smearing or sweeping motion to get a more uniform texture.

It is definitely useful to have more than one shade, although I probably would have gone for black, brown, or blue to do the shading. The different shades of red are going to be more subtle and harder to see.

I'm not familiar with liquidset, and I can't see what the applicator look like, but personally I'd just use it to set your makeup once you're done rather than mixing it while you're painting.

Whatever you do, please seal your paint so you're not rubbing red paint off on everyone you meet!

Okay, not technically makeup, but under the same umbrella: Nails.

I want to starting painting my nails, yet I'm unsure where to begin with the base and top coats. I got some cheap stuff from a drugstore a long time ago and when I applied the top coat (nails were dry) it smeared the crap out of the cute watermelon design I was trying to do. It was really disheartening.

What are the best brands for top and base coats? Or what are some good websites and resources to get me started?

>> No.8363652

>>8363624

You might have more luck in the new nail thread (>>8363615), but I'll answer anyway:

I like OPI's base coat, and I use quick dry top coats (my current fav is Seche Vite, although not everyone loves it.) Seche requires you to apply the top coat while the polish is still wet, but dries to hard within a few minutes.

For complicated nail art, I highly recommend doing quick dry top coats in between layers of polish. So for example with your watermelon: base coat, pink/red (however many layers you want to do), quick dry top coat, green, top coat, black seeds, top coat.

Sometimes I still get my designs smeared, but I kind of know what colors will smear by now and which ones will stay. I also kind will save the colors I know to smear for last (so for example, I just did nails with a black geometric design down the center. Rather than apply my top coat with a stroke down the middle then a stroke on either side, I applied the strokes on the side first, then down the middle. It lets the polish dry alittle longer and it minimizes the area that the black can be smeared on.)

Lots of nail art is just trial and error though. Best of luck.

If nobody has tried them, you should try out these ~$1 "MeNow" liquid lipsticks on eBay.

After finding out the ingredients were fine, I ordered about 4 of them. The colors are really nice, but the finish is definitely sticky. Like, lips-stuck-together sticky.

Putting some translucent powder or chapstick can make the stickiness, for the most part, go away, but these things stay through fucking everything. Through swimming, eating, and kissing all in the same ~2hrs.

While they are a bit sticky if you put on too much, I think they're a great deal for only like $1. You can buy literally all avaliable colors, (like $33) and have it cost around the same as two mid-tier lipsticks, or one high-tier.

Don't do what you see in this picture. This makeup is for girls with delicate features.

I forgot to comment earlier.

I can't say my face is quite Florence Welsh. I always thought I had a man face but other people tell me otherwise. (I'm no delicate flower, that is for sure.)

Anyhow. lips I find are the single best thing to accentuate when nature gifted you with strong bones to say the least. Seriously, look up man faces, you'll find they all wear lip stick most the time.

Wine works best for me but experiment. Some prefer plum, pink, or peach. I use a lip stain pencil instead of lip gloss.

Do not line your eyes completely with eyeliner. It only serves to make us look more manly and rugged. Eyeliner on the top lid will suffice. Same goes for eyeshadow. Keep eyeshadow on the lighter side as well. Blacks, deep blues, and plums sometimes just make a "man face" look harsh. (Now, unless your particular eye shape dictates otherwise. Most man faces have plenty large enough eyes though.)

I find I hate contouring and highlight makeup with shimmer. Angular features + shimmer just end up highlighting the wrong areas. Same with contouring, even minimal contouring will look drag queen like. I like plain matte foundation. Unless your skin is really dry/ashy, I'd stay away from moisturizing. I look far less manly sans the shiny.

Long, big hair. I rocked short hair for years but I couldn't argue when someone piped, "It kind of makes you look like a teenage pretty boy.". Hair that falls about 2 inches or more past the chin flatters more then short pixies, pageboys, or bobs. Big hair is even better. It softens prominent angles. Make sure any layers do not fall directly on/at the cheek bone, bottom of chin, or that area where you chin meets the neck/face only because then it will bring attention to exactly those areas.

Unless you have long face and not man face or both. Do not wear long hair past the chin with an extremely long face, it will only accentuate it.

does anyone have tips for maybe better mascara or for falsies? i'm afraid of trying out falsies, because the inside corner always seems to pop off for me, and since i waitress, it'd be pretty much impossible to fix during my shift and SUPER embarrassing if a customer saw. also unsanitary if it fell off...

You can do half falsies - just from the middle to the outer corner, or just trim the falsies. There are lots of more natural options that should be comfortable enough to wear all day.

That might not work for you though, it's pretty moisturising and might make you look even more oily! I use it because it's nice to my eczema haha.

If your going into high end foundations, I'm quite found of the Nars All Day Luminous glow foundation. Despite it's name it's more of a satin finish, but it's got a nice formula that works well with oily skin. Hey,
first time posting in /cgl/. I made a thread but people told me to ask here.
I'm 22, I never wore makeup in my entire life (except for once in middlescool and that wasn't applied by myself) and I'm basically a shut-in. I have ZERO experience with makeup.
But I want to look pretty until menopause kicks in. And since my hobbies are only watching anime and playing videogames I'd really like to look the part of a "fake gamer girl" that people get so upset about.
I look like a drowned corpse and my hair is greasy as fuck, my skin looks unhealthy but at least I'm rather skinny. So I think I could pull off the lana rain look.

Anyone here willing to give me absolute beginner's advice.
I already learned that I need to buy bb cream and that bleaching my hair might make me go bald, but I'm willing to take that risk.

I feel like BB cream and eyeliner are the only things you need to pull off an everyday makeup look. And as for learning how to do makeup, honestly Google is your best friend. I didn't start doing makeup until about a year ago when I first started doing cosplay, and it was just a bunch of trial and error until I figured out what worked and didn't. Looking on bad makeup threads can also give you a heads up on what to avoid.

Oh god. I'm in for a wild ride of shame and self-loathing, aren't I?
I'm willing to take the risk though.

I'm still unable to figure out what seperates cute princess-like makeup like lana rain does it and ugly gross emo chick makeup. Like how do people like lana rain or all the cosplayers manage to look so cute while others look like a clown?

>> No.8367352

>>8367341
Staying simple stops you from turning into a clown.

Start with BB cream, as mentioned before, and eye liner. Practise every night with a pen liner or even a pencil liner (make sure to wash your face properly before going to bed!!) . Keep at it as part of your everyday make up look. Once you can start drawing on your eye liner without it looking like panda eyes, try liquid eyeliner or whatever works for you.

Then go find some primer/foundation. Going up to make up counters at any departments/sephora and ask the girls to help you find a beginner foundation + correct skin colour/type. Add primer/foundation + eye liner. Try out mascara here as well + get your brows done since you're there.

Feeling more adventurous? Time to try out some eyeshadow! Get a eyelid/shadow primer +some good brushes, get a nice/somewhat cheap palette and practise again and again. And that's all I can really give you since I'm only on the eyeshadow level... Good luck anon, I was the same as you this time last year!

Youtube vids are a saviour during these times!

No probs anon. There's a couple of types of eyeliner.

Pencil--Exactly like the name says, its a coloured pencil (brown/black). I always had trouble with pencil ones.

Pen-- Its more like a marker/brush. I found that you had to go over several times to keep the colour consistent. I started off with marker.

Liquid-- I graduated from marker to liquid and never looked back. Its a lot darker and I don't have to apply it as much. The one I'm using is from Etude House and it's near impossible to smudge during the day.

If you're scared of drawing on your eyeball, can you keep one eye closed while the other open? (A... really... long wink? What the fuck do you even call that expression?) I suppose if you're really struggling, you can always press down on your eyelashes to keep your eyelid completely closed (don't do this if you already put on your mascara). Always give time for your marker/liquid eyeliner some time to dry before opening your eye.

Probably a ton of beginner problems in my post but if theres any more experienced makeup gurus, please fix my beginner mistakes.

If you want to tone down the shininess of your BB cream then just dust some powder over it, use a fluffy brush if you don't want to go overboard. Bumping with an embarrassingly newbie question, but one that has been bugging me for years.

What makes a makeup 'good'? I used to rely on internet reviews all the time, and still do for a good portion of my makeup, but all in all, I've found that relying on reviews are hit or miss. I've bought some supposedly best eyeliner that smeared within an hour, and foundations that made me look like a powdery cake because it was so dry.

Now I have some makeup which have received meh reviews online, and personally, I find the makeup to be quite the opposite of what reviews say (e.g. 'this makeup is hard to apply' while I thought it was quite easy to).

I'm just really curious - is it an individual thing, or are there definite objective guidelines for what makes makeup good? Or better yet, am I just really bad with makeup? It's been several years and honestly I still have no idea what I'm doing sometimes.

I just recently got a job and after years of using mostly drug store makeup, I'm ready to splurge at the local sephora.
I have a soft spot for Too Faced (I own their chocolate bar palette and adore it, been eyeing those heart blushes forever) and I've had a few sephora mascaras that I loved. I'm pretty pale and have freckles, dark colors tend to make me look really trashy. What're your favorite Sephora products?? Are Kat Von D's skin makeup (concealer, foundation, etc) worth the purchase? What's your favorite mascara/lipgloss/brow product that can be bought at Sephora?

Definitely a personal thing. What works for a person with dry skin probably won't work well for oily skin.

For example, I have very oily eyelids, so whenever I see reviews like "BEST EYELINER EVAR" I always do a little more research to see what kind of people are using it.

I think that there is certainly a certain amount of quality that comes with a higher price tag (I will never understand people who like things from Wet and Wild, that stuff seems like such crap to me), but don't worry about what's "good". Look for stuff that works for you.

>> No.8376127

>>8376091

Wet n Wild's strongest product IMO is the Fergie eyeshadow primer. Comparable to UDPP on me, and I have moderate to greasy hooded lids such that I can't wear even waterproof eyeliner without a fully primed eye area.

Basically everything else feels like crap, though, you're right. Can't stand their lipsticks, and even their loose glitter is notably boring next to others I own.

anastasia's brow products are god tier. lancome makes a good mascara remover while urban decay makes a great mascara. But 75% of how good a mascara is lies in its wand, and because they dry out fast it's usually better to buy drugstore mascaras. For lipgloss, bite & nars are good. For me, the Kat Von D foundation didn't work--I'm pale w/ freckles and it was too red for me and my skin is dry, so the foundation really didn't sit nicely on my skin. But YMMV, and foundations are definitely something that you sample and check in as many light sources as you can.

Sometimes I put eye cream on dry-to-cracking spots around my nose, these happen when I have a cold and have to blow my nose a lot. It's extra gentle for eye-area skin and often more dense than other moisturizers. But that could just be superstition and I don't have a brand recommendation. :/

Just jumping in to give some western make up recs, I have used Asian brands in the past but we've never really got on.

Eyeliner-wise, I would use Eyeko all the way, specifically the Visual-eyes one but it looks like they don't stock it anymore. Also used the Skinny one and its pretty great. Really intense black colour and doesn't smudge at all, even on my oily lids. The brown is also really nice, not as opaque as the black but not noticeable really unless someone is right up in your face. The only eyeliner I've ever re-purchased (four times now)

For a light but buildable foundation, BareMinerals Complexion Rescue is pretty great. I have combination, erring to the oily side, skin and I haven't broken out at all using this, my skin has looked better even. Would recommend setting it, even if it's not part of your routine though as it can move about a bit, and you will still need a concealer to cover up darker/more obvious blemishes (Collection lasting perfection concealer is pretty great). It's also definitely worth going to a makeup counter and getting colour-matched as well, as it'd be a pretty expensive mistake to go too dark or too light.

Smashbox do really nice lipsticks as well. Currently have Latte Matte and Primrose from the Be Legendary collection, both really smooth and easy to apply, the matte one isn't too drying and doesn't make your lips look cracked and manky. Primrose is definitely a 'your lips but better' shade, very pretty with a very slight satin shine, and Latte is very on trend with the whole Kylie Jenner 90s nude lip deal.

Well do you know how people fill in their brows all boxy and dark with a sharpie? Yeah that's not the goal. Sculpting you brow is supposed to give them a natural look that frames your look. I just use toupee eyeshadow and a precision brush tbh but pencils and whatnot look fine too. Your supposed to shape them to look even and clean and then lightly fill them in so they don't look patchy. Pic related is how you measure. I definitely think this is and important step to any makeup look because it just makes everything so much more put together and glamorous.

I have this Missha eyebrow pencil with a spoolie on the other end, it's rather nice and cheap. The consistency is quite creamy and it stays put all day.

I've found a new way to do my eyebrows. They're naturally light and sparse and this makes them look (mostly) natural without that drag/'eyebrows on fleek' look.
>take angled eyebrow brush
>grab a wee bit of the product from the pencil with it and go over your natural brows as necessary
>shape with q-tip if they're smudged or messy, don't go overboard and make them thicker than they are because that'll just make it obvious
>fill in missed spots with eyebrow pencil, if any
>go over the middle of the eyebrow, just before the arch, with the pencil lightly to make it a bit darker
>alternatively, take a bit of mid-brown (in my case, if you're light blonde you may need a light brown) eyeshadow and brush it over the middle part of the eyebrow just a tad to create dimension
>go over your brows with eyebrow mascara close to your natural colour, I use Etude House myself
>if there's any mess, clean it up with a Q-tip
>apply translucent powder
>spray a spoolie with a wee bit of hairspray and brush back your brows
>if your brows are too white/powdery apply more brow mascara
Hope it'll help anyone with a similar problem, I've seen some people ask about it here.
