I'd go for a MILK style coord for that skirt, given their skirts look to be made the same way, same length.

I'd pair it with a simple peter pan collared blouse in ivory or white, a pastel coloured cardigan (mint?), a necklace, a girly hair accessory (a bow barette or head bow), some cute ankle socks and whatever shoes suit.

It would be good to know what exactly you're having issues with, and what you're wanting your silhouette to achieve.

I would have thought most dresses would be flattering on an hourglass figure, so long as it cinches at the waist and has enough give in the bust region.

I try to go for cardigans that end and taper at my waist, otherwise it can look very slovenly. You could always try boleros as well.

I have a large bust in relation to my waist (34-26 or 34-24 depending on whether I wear shapewear) so the waistband on most dresses sits on my ribcage and makes me look very strange. I have the same measurements as you and I'm not too bothered by it. Are you just not used to higher waists/ empire waists? I like them myself. They're usually meant to be like that, but it could be a problem with straps too, you could try lengthening them.

I have the same bust and waist measurement, but I think my bust looks small even though I am a 28E-F. I am tall though, so I feel you on some dresses sitting on the ribcage.

Leur Getter and Jane Marple make dresses that sit at my waist properly, so I recommend them. Attached is a dress cut that works well for me that both brands do, it cinches the waist and accommodates the bust without boob loafing.

ETC tends to be hit or miss as far as fit goes with me. Their bodice length can be quite short.

I'm 5'0", so actually, 34" to 35" hits me at or below the knee depending on the cut. They'd probably consider doing longer/larger sizes if enough people asked. They mentioned expanding sizes on Instagram.

Taller otome girls, secondhand Emily Temple Cute, Peppermint Fox, older Betsey Johnson, and Jane Marple would be perfect. I know ETC goes for such great prices on Mbok. I'm too short to pull off those looks without their dresses being calf-length and boxy, otherwise my closet would be full of ETC

Granted, fitting the bust measurements is another challenge for ETC and JM, but if you can they're great options and quality.

I'd also rec. Modcloth to you guys. In fact, tall otome peeps are the only ones I'd direct there. Measurements are right on the site, they tend to stock for taller women, size varies more, and every few months they'll have a sale/coupon codes.

How do they pull off JM so well?
JM always looks so perfect on these skinny (Japanese?) asian bloggers. But honestly all the JM dresses I own/used to own are bulky as hell and at least 10cm too big around the waist and I'm not even skinny (67cm waist, 86cm bust). So they end up looking like nightgowns or shapeless mumus on me. Even a belt doesn't fix the issue, because the arm opening also tends to be too big or the shoulder straps are set too far apart almost falling off my shoulders (and with 36cm my shoulders aren't exactly narrow). There is also this huge gaping under my arms going on. All this leads me to the impression, that this clothing would be more suitable to chubby girls but then I see all the pictures of skinny to normal weight girl wearing it floating around and I ask myself, how do they do it? Do they all get their stuff altered?

>> No.8370840

I recommend not shopping with them unless it's a sale and you have to have the item/can't find it elsewhere.

I bought a pair of shoes that were too small so I sent them back for an exchange. They had the correct size in stock when I alerted them of the exchange online. It took almost 2 weeks for them to process the exchange, by the end which the shoes were completely sold out. I was under the impression that I had dibs on them since I flagged it in the system. Then, instead of crediting my money back they gave me a store credit. I didn't mind waiting until a restock, thinking it would be <1 month. Wrong. They didn't restock them until April the next year. They charge you $6.99 or so to take back returns which sucks, too.

>> No.8371216

>>8369675
Years back I stopped buying from modcloth because 9/10 you were paying 60$ for a square of fabric with elastic around the waist. You name it, I've seen it- unfinished hems, melted zippers, very crappy fabric, unlined dresses, crappy lining on dresses, exceedingly horrific lace, etc.

The good dresses on modcloth are a gamble. Sometimes they come in and they were made by a small company with great quality. Then you had dresses that may have been okay construction wise, but bad fitting wise. I have at least two dresses from them where the waist was too short on me-- and I'm 5'1. Their "full" skirts aren't ever really full, maybe one or one and a half yard tops. Droopy and sad are the only ways to describe them. A belt can only do so much.

But the biggest offender was the fabric. Sweet jesus, the fabric. Easily 98% of the dresses I got from there, for 70$+ had horrible, horrible fabric.

If you want something like modcloth but better quality, honestly you'd be better served getting a simple sewing machine. Their dresses are really, really, *really* not hard to make (I cannot emphasise this enough, most of their dresses don't even have sleeves so you can make one of them in five to ten minutes,) and if you make it at home you can have a much higher quality for much, much cheaper. Instead of a flimsy, droopy skirt you can make a badass circle skirt with some badass drapes for maybe $20.

Sadly, I've bought enough from modcloth that I have no trouble believing you about the zippers, etc. Almost everything I've gotten has had cheap material, is unlined, or is just cut weird. And at 5'8" I find a LOT of their skirts and dresses too short for me (I like things that at least come to my knees). The only thing I really buy from them now is cardigans, and the occasional shirt. Anon, the bunny shoes you posted are from TUK. (Which are pretty nice shoes--I have some other TUK shoes.)
Modcloth is just a reseller for various brands.

You'll need to research the item(s) and the brands their from to know if it's worth the purchase.

I'm smaller than you and most JM JSKs work fine for me. I have to loosely belt them so there isn't the "10 cm of fabric cinched up" effect around the waist, but looking at photos that's how Japanese girls wear them, too. Frankly they are cut frumpy. A blouse/cardigan and belt sort of hides it, but frumpy and loose is the look.

Oh my god, anon, please tell me if you share this specific pain: GORGEOUS skirts a few years back, sort of high waisted, but flared out?

ZIPPER WAS SHIT no matter what you did to it, no matter how you tried to fix it. I have no idea how they even got the skirts on their models. Complaints in the reviews were up the wazoo. I don't think the company that made them ever fixed it. I think Modcloth just stopped selling them.

>> No.8373572

>>8373567
To clarify, it wasn't the exact skirt in the pic. It was silkier looking, flouncier, and came in different colors.

I even took that skirt to a seamstress.Unsalvagable for what it was worth.

It's been like 6 or 7 years and I'm still mad.

I feel like hundreds of people are still mad.

>> No.8373608

>>8369675
OP, I know I'm late, but they are definitely hit or miss. Take a very careful look at the reviews. About 70% of their stuff is okay quality (and I'm including sweaters, jackets, jewelry, tights, and shoes, so this is a little generous).

For dresses, check out the reviews and stick with thicker fabric. One of the advantages Modcloth has is their customers take pics and can put them in their comments and list their height, bust size, and dress size. That's actually how I realized nearly NONE of their shit works for short girls (sorry fellow short girls).

Why not light fabrics? Because it's harder to tell in pictures how the quality is and there is DEFINITELY a bigger chance the product will look much worse than the stock picture--I'm talking jagged cuts, loose strings, a ton of factors.

Another hint that makes them a decent source when you PLAY them: reverse image search anything they didn't list a brand for, or search the item name in Google, reverse image search that. Modcloth is really good at collecting from cute brands and they benefit from you NOT knowing the brand name by jacking up the price a bit. Find something cute on Modcloth and you just might be able to find it cheaper somewhere else.

When they have big sales, they are a really good resource. And the system they have to notify you when something's on sale/restocked is good.

They're also a good starting point for getting ideas and then finding the better deal elsewhere. And if I'm not mistaken, their tights always come in multiple sizes.

>> No.8373695

>>8373608

Pro-tip: Start up a chat and ask one of the Mod stylists what the brand is. They will tell you and then give some bs about how it's "imported" or "exclusive" (it's not) to make you buy it there. Then just close the chat and Google the brand lol

It's more vintagey than otome kei, I think it's a bit too 'safe' to be considered otome kei, which has been built up in my mind to be 'zany' but in a very classy way. I think it /could/ be done, but you have to put a lot of work into it in order for it to be considered otome kei.

Yup, that's my problem too.

I tried getting into otome, but I really can't get into it because a) it's a bit too cute for me and I'm more into classical grandma stuff, and the larger reason b) it's just really hard to pinpoint.

It's kind of all about being a little out there and quirky, but still retaining enough coherence to be considered cute in a more mature manner than sweet lolita.

Otome is a bit of a youthful, cute take on vintage grandma (as opposed to vintage little girl). There's a fair bit that's loosely vintage inspired and cute print elements, but a lot of loose, untailored cuts, generally modest hemlines, and not many loud, childish/babyish print designs. ...Though of course JM and other brands have also put out things that are almost the complete opposite of that.

I bought the same pair of shoes twice, because I sent the first back for arriving with weird marks on them (they were beige) and to size up, and the second pair arrived with the same weird marks. They also looked nothing like the stock photos and were incredibly cheap looking. If they hadn't been already kinda inexpensive I woulda sent those back too. I've gotten much nicer shoes for same or lower prices from Payless.

The quality is hit or miss. Modcloth is trustworthy in the sense that they aren't going to just scam you out of money for a product you're never getting. I bought Irregular Choice heels from them before but they were obviously good quality because IC is a good quality brand. In my experience, they have really good customer service. If you order something that sucks you can easily return it.

I can see where you're coming from anon but otome has never really registered as a 'cute take on granny style' to me. Otome literally means 'young maiden' with nuances of 'beautiful woman' and 'charming'. The otome look emerged in Japan in the 70s and whilst certain looks may be considered grannyish by western standards, the driving influence behind the style was (and largely still is) appearing like a cute and youthful prairie girl or a modest pretty young woman from a fairytale, or heroine from a shoujo or Josei manga. It's certainly developed in its quirkiness over the years (and certain brands such as ETC have developed more of a 'mod' kinda aesthetic) but of course it's still generally a lot less outlandish and more wearable than lolita.

It could certainly fit under the 'otome' umbrella but it lacks the kinda pop quirkiness you see in many otome brands these days. It looks more like what would have been considered 'otome' in the perhaps the 70s, 80s and possibly 90s however, it still looks like the kind of thing you might see being sold by say, axes femme or possibly Pink House.

Jane Marple was literally named after an old lady, though. Maybe real old ladies are less likely to go for this brand (my grandma only wears slacks, baggy knits and orthopedic shoes) but you can't really deny they have taken at least some inspiration from fabulous grannies.

I think 'some inspiration' is a fair assessment however 'cute take on granny style' still doesn't sit right with me in terms of describing otome fashion as a whole, Jane Marple is just one compan of many and also if I remember rightly, the name was used largely because she was a smart and independent woman, untroubled by desire to persue men etc and instead had her own adventures and lived her own life - charming and carefree (and yes a cute and quirky fashion sense). Even Japanese women's 'conservative style' aimed more at working women from 20-40s in age appears very grannyish by western standards, but it's not considered old ladyish inspired or in style.
I suppose the point is, otome for all its various influences, is still far more 'young maiden' than 'cute take on granny' in my mind.

Why not just ease into the whole thing using tumblr or something, and then when you feel more comfortable with the style, start a more individual type blog. To be honest, a 'watch me improve' personal blog doesn't sound all that appealing. I think in general people like to view things that are inspirational to them rather than follow to impart advice - I think that kinda thing is better suited to forums or as mentioned, some place like tumblr or similar microblog platform. A more traditional blog I think needs stronger content to really make it work and maintain people's increasingly short attention spans.

>> No.8410190

I understand what you are saying. It wouldn't be too harmful to blog in a normal style and just have no one read it for awhile while I improve, right? I don't like the Tumblr format. I could just not post it till anywhere till I get better.

Harmful? of course not, you should go and do what makes you happy anon. Sounds like you've pretty much made up your mind anyway.

If your blog did become popular, some people may actually enjoy looking back through the 'finding your feet' phase of entering the fashion, that kinda interest tends to come from already establishing yourself though (unless something you do is deemed questionable enough to attract the kind of perpetually irked types that post in 'ita' threads etc).

A general question here. I am building up an otome wardrobe but it often gets quite cold here in the winter and a lot of the stuff would be inappropriate to wear during that time. I was wondering if anyone had any tricks to stay warm in the colder months while still maintaining the style?

>> No.8441553

Swap shoes for boots, wear thicker tights (or layer patterned tights/socks over thinner tights for extra warmth), wear cardigans. I doubt you're going to be outside all day, and most basic otome looks (not the super summery ones) should be just fine if you're inside.
I wore otome fairly regularly last winter and am from the northern border of the US, where it was routinely below freezing. Obviously if it was super cold (we had a few days like ~20), I wouldn't wear dresses, but other than that it was fine for waiting for the bus, walking to work, going back home, etc.

Personally all winter I live in Uniqlo heat tech items. They layer nicely and really make a difference. Also fleece leggings, layering cardigans over dresses with long sleeved blouses or cutsews underneath, heavy winter appropriate coats with cute designs or at least swapping out the buttons for something a bit whimsical, and a good pair of interesting boots in a neutral color that coordinates with your wardrobe.

>> No.8441595

Cardigans definitely are not warm enough for where I am.
I am in Canada so it gets much colder here (usually around 5 to -13F). I almost never see mittens, scarves, coats/jackets etc in otome and that worries me for the colder months here.

I will definitely layer tights that seems like it would be a lot warmer and boots are a must for sure!

>> No.8441653

>>8441595
Cardigans should be fine under a coat, which was what I meant. When most people ask for coord advice, they're not asking for outerwear advice (beyond maybe a cardigan or fitted jacket). You never see mittens/scarves/etc. because these are photos of outfits, either taken inside or taken outside in the summer.
Like I said, I'm from the north too, and I know about cold. It's usually -15 to 5 degrees from late Nov to early March where I'm from, and we have a hell of a lot of days colder than that.
