Girls (and boys, idk), how old is too old for wearing fairy kei? I'm approaching 23 and I'm worried that wearing it until late twenties will make me look stupid. I've loved alt fash all my life and don't want to stop wearing it - I don't particularly care for darker fashions like goth and I had a short and sad lolita stint that I won't be returning to. I'm 22 and I'm only just finally starting to build an alt fashion wardrobe even though I've been interested in it since I was a young kid (and over the years did cobble together a few bits and pieces, as best a kid could), and what little I do have so far I don't get to wear much due to health or having nowhere to wear the stuff. I guess that, taking regular casual fairy kei and mahou kei as examples, a pastel shirt, skater shirt, otks and sneakers with a simple palette looks a whole lot different to a detailed cutsew, four layered tutus, tights with layered socks, sweet lolita-esque shoes, a peignoir and a ton of accessories.

so ive finally started trying to put together some fairy-kei coords but i cant help but feel like im doing it wrong and im just trying to look fairy-kei (almost like a fairy-kei ita or something)

Do you have some sort of headgear, bracelet, necklace or ring? At least two should be present, even for a casual outfit.
If you have a tutu, is it poofy? Smothered petticoats look very bland, despite its colors.
What are you doing with your hair? Hair can be left down, but side ponytails are cuter than back ponytails.
Do you have some sort of "pop" for your outfit? Bold polka dots, graphic design, pattern, etc.
Is your legwear suitable for fairy kei? Unlike lolita, socks and tights together are welcomed in fairy kei.
Is your jewelry/accessories metallic heavy? Too much metal in the jewelry might throw off the look.
Is there something inspired by the 80s? Or at least cutesy? Barbie, Sanrio, even Pokemon could work.

If I think of anymore, I'll update this. But it should be a good basics lay-out.

Can anyone here suggestion sites for good pastel tutu/petticoat-like skirts? I've only found one store on rakuten so far, and the Fairy Kei Sales group on FB is shit. I own one that is a very soft, almost mesh like material but it is too short to wear on its own, so I was hoping to find another layer.

I get pissed when girls do fuck all with their hair. Normally happens with the plain, thrown-on tutu kind of newfag looks but sometimes I see well-coorded outfits with ratty hair and no accessories and it's a massive no-no from me.

But seconding bodyline tutus, bodyline shoes. Anything new is not going to be cheap, and if it's cheap and new, it's not high quality. That's pretty much it. Taobao can have some nice stuff, but you'll have to stalk some threads or blogs to find things you want. Easiest option tbh is thrift shopping and altering. You'll always find something to cut up or spray paint or dye. And if it fails, it's only $3 lost.
There's pretty much no brands or shops that have fairy kei pieces at lower prices. You can go to retail places like H&M, but the quality is low and the prices are too high for what they are.
Looking for specific items on ebay or etsy may be a good option, like they have max star sneakers, which are adorable. You can also check out second hand fairy kei communities. I hope you find some stuff you like!
