I love looking at vintage gunne sax pieces and seeing how 'lolita' a lot of them look. Natural-kei is my favourite, a happy mix somewhere between country lolita, mori, and otome.

It was just the 70s edwardian/ pastoral revival fashion that spread to Japan. Maybe theirs didn't have such low cuts on some of the dresses. Apparently it was popular with house wives, wanting to be cute and practical.

Nope. For example, lolita is very distinctive and it would be difficult to replicate that with normal fag clothes. This is just neutral toned stuff in layers. Anyone could go into F21 and make a cheap version of this and no one would think it was a particular kind of fashion.

It has a vintage/ 70s/ pastoral but not dirty hippy boho feel. You could do the same thing for otome! That doesn't mean it's bad. You can't erase the fact the fashion existed historically anyway. Plus, pink house and gunne sax (for example) have exceptional quality for the most part, far exceeding forever 21. I haven't seen f21 selling aprons and prairie dresses. A hipster would coord things in a sexier way with heavier makeup and different shoes to avoid the costumey anne of green gables/ little house on the prairie look; I found plenty of pictures of that looking at vintage dresses for sale.

I think it went something like this:
The gunne sax pastoral style was popularised in the west by shows like little house on the prairie, and was an extension of the hippie ideal of wanting to return to nature/ simpler times. Japan was inspired by this and the style there became known as 'natural style'. It wasn't an edgy street fashion, it was worn by older people as well. Brands like Pink House and PRETTY continued making this style of clothing into the 80s and 90s (PRETTY later evolved into AP). This went on to inspire lolita and otome, and more closely mori and dolly kei, which often use the same vintage pieces. Western hipsters are inspired by 70s western fashion, which is the root of natural kei and so look similar, but they are probably unaware of this so their outfits will look more like mainstream thrifted fashion (and like the hippie stereotype they associate with the 70s) rather than borderline lolita with aprons and ruffles.

Could it be possible that country lolita is actually more of a crossover between sweet and natural-kei? I always thought it was a blend of sweet and classic, but after reading this thread I'm beginning to think otherwise.
I know that country was one of the first substyles to appear outside of the major three (sweet, gothic, classic) and the fashion has always been the type to steal current trends for their own use, like deco-lolita and hime-lolita of years past.

Interesting idea. I think it's a bit of both, since lolita in general came from natural-kei some were always there, especially to begin with. Lolita classifications are kind of... made up. If you were to classify it based on the anatomy off the outfit it WOULD be somewhere between sweet and classic, but it's also inspired by the girly natural kei fashions of the past, and cute characters like Ann of Green Gables. It's more of a trope thing/ the idea of a cute country girl (a romanticised idea which probably became a thing in the natural-kei era) than what was big at the time, since the biggest popularity of natural kei was a few decades before lolita and the 90s- early 2000s was pretty 'minimalist', I guess (mori has made the aesthetic popular again now).

Modern takes like sugary sweet country with red gingham, fruits and matchy shoes aren't really visually similar.
