If you're going as Link, it would be cute for her to go as Zelda, but it might be difficult to do as a first time cosplayer. Maybe she could go as Malon? Saria? Tetra could be cute, too!!

Most of the larger cosplayers who get criticized tend to be the ones who try to squeeze into outfits that are too small for them or who wear something ridiculously skimpy.

You seem dead set on Link, so just do Ocarina Link and have your GF be Saria. Those are easy enough for first timers.

Also if she doesn't want attention then don't force her to cosplay, people are going to pay attention to you when you're wearing a costume. And how about you try to build up her confidence in herself and her body, and start working out with her to encourage her to lose weight.

Sorry if this is too invasive but what kind of body shape does he have? Weight distribution is definitely and important thing to take into account as well as bone structure. Using myself as an example, I have most of my fat in my hips/butt/upper thigh with some cellulite and larger shoulders. A skirt with more volume is going to look more flattering than a pencil skirt, as it will balance my shoulders and conceal any lump problems. Playing up positives, I have a small waist and muscular calves, so I might try to pick a costume that would highlight these features.

So, that's important in figuring out suggestions. I'm not going to suggest Pochaco if your girlfriend has tiny breasts as I wouldn't suggest SeeU if she's top heavy.

Being 5'10, I find myself having to climb on top of chairs.

It's good, because I am working out a lot of muscles by climbing, but carrying around my grappling hook everywhere is hard work.

I usually just ride on my 6'1 friend's shoulders, but he can't fit through buildings anymore.
