I am downhearted seagulls. I feel like a lot of western Jfashion is hitting a plateau of creativity, and everyone is looking the same these days.

Can we have a non-lolita related inspiration thread? Post your best of the best, coords you feel are outside the mold but work well, or things you'd like to see more of that aren't done enough.

Pic related. I know it's Kurebayashi, but I'm strongly in favor of anyone willing to divorce decora from being forcibly merged with fairy kei. Imo I'm really tired of decora being nothing but pastels these days.

OP here. I wouldn't mind pastel decora if it wasn't basically just fairy kei with a crap ton of accessories. Like honestly, decora, fairy kei, and OTT sweet are getting to be so damn similar in construction and color scheme there's almost no point distinguishing between them anymore.

Pic related. If you couldn't see the actual dresses in the shot, this could easily be mistaken for any single one of those styles.

I have seen some pastel decora outfits that weren't fairy-decora (I actually like pastel decora as much as regular if not more because the colors are easier on my sensitive eyes), but I agree with you that all these styles are starting to blend so much that they look the same. I like crossover genres and think they're cute but It's sad to see that the original styles are harder to find. They all did start out very different looking from each other. I hope they don't die out, because I like them all for different reasons.

Ok I might be wrong but you sound really new. Like you do realize Spank! is the store that started Fairy Kei, right? They're pretty much synonymous. You can call it decora inspired or whatever you want, the point is that the styles are being smushed together so often there's hardly a way of distinguishing them these days. You can't look up decora on tumblr without getting fairy kei and sweet lolita posts mixed in, and vice versa. That's ultimately what I'm saying here.

I'm definitely not new. You realize the people on tumblr are tagging it as everything so that they can get notes/can't tell the differences themselves? I know Spank! started fairy kei, but nowadays they are definitely not the same thing nowadays. It's irritating me too, I want to look through the FK tags and get cute pastel stuff, not some random person in pastel pants calling it "fairy kei" so I understand where you're coming from, but they're not as smushed together as you're saying they are. I think the problem is people can't tell the differences between styles nowadays, so they end up tagging it as everything to get notes.

You're right. I remember when pastel decora really started picking up and yea, it was pretty cute when done well. But as you said, it's starting to actually replace the original styles now and it just kills me a little bit.

I am aware that people just mass tag their tumblr posts. It was a poor example, but the only one I could think to give. And fair enough, they've evolved in different directions, I'll retract my statement for that.

Here to interrupt your regular programming. I'm hoping to get a little advice or just see how other people feel. I'm sorry if this comes out long, I'm trying to keep it short but have a habit of over-writing.

I want to start wearing cute/cool/Jfash clothes on a daily basis and expand my wardrobe to include several different fashion styles. Most of these styles are J fash, some are not. Transitioning my wardrobe and personal style is very exciting, but it's also scary.

Currently I wear Lolita maybe 4-5 times a year. I want to wear it more often but I find the clothes to be physically uncomfortable. I wear a casual outfit with a skirt about once a month on average. I don't usually find skirts uncomfortable but sometimes I feel awkward in them and that makes me uncomfortable. On a daily basis I just dress for comfort in boring clothes because I often don't feel well and my health isn't good and I want to be in clothes that are comfortable, loose and easy to move in.

By changing my style, it means going from wearing a skirt/dress once in a white to at least once a week, and hopefully a few times a week at some point. That's a really big jump for me! I'm nervous it won't work out, but I really want to do it.

I'd like to hear some advice about getting used to wearing skirts and dresses more often. I'd also like to hear about anyone else's experiences if they'd like to share. I could also use some advice to staying comfortable. One thing I did was gave up tights, they would make me feel ill due to the pressure they put on my stomach. It's a good excuse to collect fun socks.

I really like the outfit in pic related, it looks like something I could wear daily and it's cute and looks easy to move in. I think it's from Zipper. If anyone can post more casual but funky and cute Jfash pics, that would help me a lot as I'm trying to gather pics and use them to help me plan my new wardrobe!

>> No.8372780

>>8372724
Hey! I can't really comment on anything health related, but I did go through a similar thing early this year. I didn't feel well mentally due to self-esteem issues, which is why I used to dress pretty boring. Then, one day, I just decided to go ahead and wear all the clothing I had collected over the years but never wore. People were surprised at first, but actually in a positive way. I have to admit that some of my early outfits were pretty shitty, but that's just something that is very likely to happen in the beginning. Don't give up though and go ahead wearing skirts and dresses, you'll soon get the hang of what looks good on you!

Regarding your health issues: What about dresses with empire waists? I obviously have no idea what you look like and not everybody looks good in these, but they are comfy as fuck and might be a viable option.

some casual and comfy looking jfash for you

>> No.8372847

Sage for being kinda off topic, but I didn't find any other threads for this.
I really really want to start wearing jfash. I've been interested for years and I used to have a tumblr dedicated to it.
Problem is, I'm awful at coordinating.
Maybe that's not the right word though, I think if I had a decent sized closet, I'd be able to put together some cute coords. I just don't know where to start.
I kinda like a lot of different fashions (larme-key, soft sister, Mori girl fairy-lei:ish, mostly the bright or pastel ones). I honestly don't know which one to go with. And even when I've chosen, I don't know what I should start with.
I find cute clothes, but I don't think they go great together.
I've been spending hours on taobao, looking through stuff, but I don't know what I should buy to get a decent sized closet that I could mix and match.
I get anxious just thinking about it.
How do you gulls pick one fashion and stay with it? What are fundamentals for, let's say, a soft sister closet? What pieces of clothing should I get to make it work?
I know I'm kinda asking for a lot but I'm kinda depressed about it and I'm considering just dropping the whole thing.

Try start off with the one you'd wear the most. As for coordinating, it's something you pick up after a while, so before you buy anything stop looking at individual clothes on taobao and start looking at full coordinates that you like. It's kind of like studying, but clothing instead of numbers.

>>8372780
Empire waists are hit and miss on me. I'm small busted but I don't always like the way they look. I think all the layers of Lolita is what makes it so uncomfortable for me to wear. It's a lot of weight and compression. I wear my things slightly big to try and help, which I know is a pet peeve for some people but I think a little looseness can be cute and it's better for me.

>>8372877
It's terrible when you want to dress up but can't. I hope we can both find some ways to wear jfash daily and casually. I'm also in the process of trying to decide what's really "me" as well, I like almost everything so it's hard for me to tell what's "me," if that makes sense.

One thing I'm scared of, besides not being able to go through with wearing skirts and dresses regularly, is that I'll spend a lot of money on something and find it doesn't work for me. I'm hoping to change my wardrobe as savings-friendly as possible, and splurge on one or two big, special items. But I don't want to do that until after I know I can wear stuff more often, and a bit like >>8372847 I'm not terrible at coordinating, but I'm not quite sure where to start with my new wardrobe.

Yes, I've been thinking that I should get OP's for Lolita wear. I really like the look of JSKs because they're so iconic and I love skirts and how versatile they are, but I know OPs will probably be more comfortable.

Right now I don't want to add to my Lolita wardrobe, unless of course Bodyline brings that one sailor dress to their overseas site and it's not crazy overpriced. It's really small and I don't have any big brand pieces, but my daily wardrobe is a mess and I want to focus on that since Lolita will probably never be a daily thing for me. The good thing is that I've never had an issue with regular skirts since I can get them in a looser fit and it's fine, it's just a matter of not being used to wearing them regularly.

It's so hard figuring out where to start with my wardrobe since almost every other style/look I want to wear uses casual clothes. With styles like Lolita, at least you can easily know where to start since you need specific specialty items to get the look.

I love Kyary for her fashion sense and she seems like a pretty genuine and fun person, but her music doesn't appeal to me with the exception of like two songs. Her singing is cute, but the songs themselves are pretty generic and blah. I know she's not the one who writes the stuff, she's a pop idol and people write everything for her, she just preforms. I do hope she's happy with the career she's made though. It must be fun but also scary and exhausting. I certainly wouldn't want that kind of fame for sure.

That's a shame! I didn't know they went out. I liked a lot of their clothes.

I am looking for help if anyone can give me some. I'm so frustrated with this and I desperately need some advice.

Any tips to start dressing "Harajuku-ish?" I mean to say, there's a lot of Jfash snaps of people with their own style that doesn't belong to an established fashion type.

Examples so it makes more sense what I mean:

and pic related

I love the creativity in these kind of looks, they are so fun and cheerful and laid back and full of quirk and personality. I would love to be able to dress up like this. But for some reason I can't figure out how to do it. Everyone is always mismatched or mixing patterns and colors but they don't look bad or unmatched at all. Whenever I try to dress like this, I either end up being too matchy matchy so I don't have the right look and I end up looking more like an edgy teenager, or I end up looking stupid and horrible, like I dressed myself with my eyes closed. It also seems like ideas that look good laid out on my bed always look worse when I actually wear them.

Is there some kind of trick to coordinating outfits like this? Is it just a matter of owning the fact you are dressed in clothes that don't match and having fun with it even if you look dumb? Do you just need to have a natural born talent for knowing how to put together an outfit so quirky?

>> No.8384057

>>8383925
I think the trick is balance. These kind of looks might combine wildly different colors and themes, but they are usually spread throughout the entire outfit. The right person in your pic has that star theme going on pretty strong, but they also have the light colors in both the under-hoodie (?) and the hair clips. It's hard to pull of that kind of look, but maybe you could try coming up with different matchy themes, then combine them?

You also have to accept that you're going to look ridiculous no matter what and that you have to own that ridiculousness.

I recently tried to coordinate something the other day with a star/boystyle theme and thought it was balanced at first, then as the day went on I noticed how it just didn't look right at all. Maybe I need more practice and new clothes to work with. I hope one day I'll get the hang of it.

Hi, it's >>8372724 again. While looking at some different pictures I started to realize that at times the only difference between slightly quirky, frumpy or outdated western clothes and casual J fashion, besides the more frequent use of skirts, is the hair and make up. It's fine to go with a more natural look, just take care of your skin, and style your hair well (it's fine if it's simple, just needs to look good with the outfit). You could also try experimenting with more make-up, and see if that looks better. Not wearing a lot of make-up always makes it look more casual than if you did, but that's not always a bad thing.

In your pic, left would probably be fine without the make-up, but I think right's eyeshadow really makes a difference. It makes the outfit much more interesting to me.

Thank you for your honest opinion and advice. I love make up a lot, but I hate actually wearing it. I agree that a more casual look isn't always a bad thing and since I'm aiming for a more casual look maybe I'll be alright then. If my outfits don't feel right I'll try to experiment a little with some really simple make up stuff and see if that makes the difference.

I like to keep my hair styled simple or just left down but it looks like that's how most girls in J fashion do their hair too so I'm not as worried about that.

Eyeliner really makes your eyes pop, and you can change your look simply by how you line your eyes. If you have long lashes already you can curl them and set then with a clear mascara.

Thanks for answering me, and I suppose it does make the eyes pop. If I have trouble with getting my look right I'll start experimenting with eyeliner and see if that helps to tie everything together.

When I have to wear mascara I actually like to wear the lengthening kind because it makes my lashes comically long like fake lashes would be, ha ha ha. I should get some clear mascara though because one of the several reasons I hate wearing make up is that it's so messy and never comes off all the way.

How does one find their "true" individual style? I like all different kinds of fashion styles, but I don't want to just follow a single fashion style or two, I want to figure out what's "me."
I know the easiest way to figure it out is to just buy and wear what I truly like, but I feel like if I do that I won't look fashionable at all, and I feel like I can't tell the difference between things I like and things I like for me personally, because I can like something but not feel comfortable wearing it. For example, I tried to make a collage of outfits I liked in order to try to figure out my own personal style, but after finishing and looking at it I realized that even though I like so many of the outfits, a lot of them were things I'd never actually wear even though I loved them.
In this kind of fashion, how do you stay true to yourself? I'm at such a loss for this, I've been trying to find my individual style for a few months now and can't seem to find it.

there's going to be a bit of money loss but you can usually either find stuff to try on the cheap or resell it.

to me that risk was one i was willing and happy to take to find out what i loved and was really 'me'.

I just read a Japanese girl's blog that referring to what girls here have been calling "larme-kei" as "American Lolita" in Japan. After searching the term and seeing similar looking things and a few other blogs mentioning the phrase, I'm starting to think this is what they're actually calling it over there and it wasn't just a cute title page for that magazine spread. I don't know if it is really called that officially or not but if it is I have some very mixed feelings about it. Lord knows we don't need another fashion style with the word "Lolita" in it anywhere, especially one that's actually appears to be based on the western meaning, but I actually like the style, thinks it's adorable, and have always liked the name Lolita. I'm super curious about how the trend came to be. I need to do more reading about it.

Yes, they usually are. Sometimes it's specially made new stuff (rarely), I know Fifi Chancil and Olympia le Tan are two very popular brands for new lingerie. More commonly it's vintage stuff, from the early 80s or earlier, which I've always found to be more conservative than newer stuff. Usually they're only wearing lingerie "outerwear", though, like pegnoirs or housecoats.

There are also a lot of lingerie-look items out now. Swankiss, WEGO, eHyphen World Gallery (especially their collaborations with Amo), and Mon Lily do a lot of that type of faux lingerie meant to be worn as regular clothing. But

Off the top of my head:
>Milk (sometimes, they have a lot of cutsews that girls seem to use)
>Katie
>Cerise
>Candy Stripper
>EHyphen World Gallery
>WEGO
>The Virgin Mary (formerly known as Cult Party)
>Spank! (more rarely, but a good source for vintage, they're more 1980s than the soft flows look you usually see)
>Mon Lily
>Basically anywhere that sells "soft sister" or larme kei

I love Rokku gal. I still wear it even if it is horribly out of date now.

It's perfectly gothic without looking like Marilyn Manson threw up.

I can't find shorts anymore. Instead of looking like hot pants all shorts where I live are now cut like daisy dukes.

Great I'm sure for some but on me not only does it further accentuate the tennessee accent but then half my ass cheek also hangs out. I can't wear shorts cut like a V and all shorts seem to now be cut like a V.

I don't mind short shorts, I want them. I don't want my ass hanging out though.

Here's a few that are definitely cheap but don't really have the same effect as the ones in the pic upthread:

Those may not be what you're looking for but I think they're cute. Definitely look on taobao and check out the taobao haul thread.

Check out Bodyline, their stuff is generally cheap but some of it is kinda pricey. Here's a link to the lolita skirts:

Sorry that wasn't better, hopefully somebody else can get what you're looking for if this doesn't help.

I said I had no idea a few days ago, but after taking another look I think I know where they came them. It looks like Kyary bought them back in 2012 and at one time they were being sold here http://www.ambidex-store.jp/ but they seem to not carry them anymore. They do carry them in a loafer style, but I don't care for them. http://www.ambidex-store.jp/products/detail.php?product_id=10127

So, it looks like DIY is going to be the best option for you unless you like them in the loafer style.

ANNNNND Images are maxed out. I'll start a new J-fash general in a couple minutes, but I'm taking a break from CGL in the next day or two and I don't know how long before I'll be back. I just need a break from this place and from being on the computer so much. So hopefully lots of great outfits will get posted before I leave so I don't feel like I missed any.

God, its so annoying. I live in the Midwest and constantly see girls wearing shirts with leggings and engineer boots. Im so sick of this leggings as pants trend. The styles you mainly see in the US are trendy, boho, sporty, and casual and maybe 90s vintage or indie if youre lucky (for millenials). I occasionally see feminine classic styles but it seems rare. I really wish there were brands similar too swankiss, liz lisa, or others named itt.

Sorry for the OT rant.
