Total Shironuri noob here and have never painted my face before for cosplay or anything. Can anyone recommend a white that'd be really good for this or unusual skin colors in general? I think I'm worried about it looking caked on and not smooth looking.

Eye shadow, wetting eye shadow, liner, liquid liner, face paint(aqua colour, creme, i like wolfe i have their sampler pallet).

Though for face paint i would recommend you get small brushes like nail art brushes (pic related they are very small i like them for regular painting as well), i've gotten some pretty good ones from a "5 Below" store near me, so if you have something like that near you check it out.

Just got Mehron's clown white face paint and something called Stargazer white pressed powder. All the 'big' brand names just had loose powder and I prefer Minori's method when it comes to powder instead of using loose. Also have on hand a bottle of Mehron barrier spray just in case.

Should get here by next week. I'll do a review when it arrives.

It's anywhere from fantasy to gothic to cosplay to just fancy everyday clothes. I think the make/buy split is probably going to be close to 50/50 because I've seen looks using straight up Bodyline seifukus and white paint on one end of the spectrum and Minori's fully handmade stuff on the other but in the middle it seems to be a mixture of mix-matched bought things with little handmade touches.

Like pic related. He probably bought a lot of it and then handmade the little things like the book page ruffle collar and the book fan.

Definitely give it a shot, anon. Don't overthink it and try to go over the top on your first try on the makeup or outfit unless you have something you know you really want to do.

technically, "shironuri" is used to describe even geisha makeup. however, it is not shironuri fashion, so common sense would say it does not apply.

maybe for a more specific definition, if it has white face and is NOT already part of another style (such as western goth), it can be considered "shironuri style."

How long does it generally take before shironuri makeup needs touching up? I'd love to wear it to some cons but I imagine it must crease after a couple of hours.

I wondered if it was possible to create a shironuri/gyaru hybrid but meanwhile I would request more decora-style looks and will be posting some that I have.

When I went to Anime USA, I had my face white the entire con. On the Saturday of that con, I think I was painted for around 16 hours, which included going to a concert and then being very drunk. I only touched up maybe two or three times all day and they were pretty minor touchups. I used a regular makeup primer first, then Mehron's clown white, then set it with baby powder.

Different anon but you could try a spritz of Mehron Barrier Spray over it. That'll at the very least make it last a bit longer before you need a touch-up. I've started using it with all my make-up and it does make the powder level stay longer.

How did your glasses hold up against the paint? I'm getting contacts but if that doesn't work out I'd have to wear my glasses when I'm not taking pictures at a future convention because I'm barely able to see more than a foot in front of me without them.

Some of my shironuri supplies came in today. Still waiting on my pressed powder and powder puffs but I got my Miss A Shop order which was basically

TBH I prefer glasses to contacts when I do body paint... Not that I generally get to wear them when I paint up, lmao. Anyway, when you wear paint you need to be really careful with any contacts so glasses work well for that reason. Paint DOES rub off on them, though. Namely where they sit on your nose and since white paint is much harder to photoshop than, say, grey (cough), at least to an amateur, I'd recommend that if you need to wear them you incorporate them into your outfit so you don't take them off for photos.
My glasses are pretty old and also all plastic so the white paint did rub off onto them and doesn't really come out, though I suppose it will with time.

It honestly depends. You can do a basic contour with a light grey, you can do a colour block contour with black/solid black. Or you could use a colour that you're using in your colour palette (ex. contouring with blue with a blue and white look). It's super flexible.

Okay I tried using my Mehron white paint and a baby powder like people suggested and it looked like shit so I thought maybe I didn't put enough Mehron paint on so I wiped it all off and tried again using thick globes of paint and patting the sponge instead of smearing it and it was still thin and patchy as fuck.

So I thought maybe it was me fucking up since I had heard Mehron was good but seeing >>8400578 and especially >>8400557 I can see how patchy and rough textured theirs is especially around the forehead under their powder coat so I'm starting to think it's really the Mehron paint just being shitty as all hell. I think I should have gone with Ben Nye. Is Ben Nye any better? Just getting my paint out of the container was like trying to drag my sponge through slow drying cement.

On the good side, I did get pretty good at recreating the "Reflections" scene from Mulan.

Attaching a pic only to show how patchy it is after 20 minutes of constant layering paint over paint just trying to get a good base coat before the powder.

Am I just missing something that wasn't on the container and there's some kind of magic secret to this shit or should I just put it up as a bad product and try something else?

Well if you're using water base for white paint (which I assume, as you wouldn't be layering it otherwise or waited for it to dry), you have your first problem right there. White paint is a bitch and waterbase just isn't thick or smooth enough unless you airbrush it.
Second, when you use cream base PLEASE make sure to get clown white and not just regular white. I don't have a good pic to show but I've tried both from Kryolan and the clown white covers, like, 20% better.

Mehron, Ben Nye, and Kryolan are all COMPANIES. They all make a variety of makeup products, and from brand to brand they're all about equal. If you are asking if Ben Nye Product x is better than Mehron product y, you need to specify which products you're talking about

moisturized and primed skin goes a long way towards quality paint, no matter what you're using

Buy a couple of decent, soft Kabuki brushes.

Use it to brush the cream/paint onto your face in small circles, moving up and outwards.
Once you're done, dampen a sponge and lightly pat it over your whole face to even and smooth the cream.
Apply a thin layer of loose powder (white or transparent) using a DIFFERENT kabuki brush. Don't even bother washing the first one - Just use two different ones for creams and powders.

Does Manic Panic Goth White work for shironuri make up? Any experiences with it?

Working at a haunted house gave me so many ideas for shironuri coords. I can't wait until all my new makeup comes in the mail so I can test them out <3 Hoping to have a full look for a con in September. Probably going to go for a nurse or clown theme? Not sure yet. But I'm so excited~

What color lenses do you think would best suit the white face if I want to do a variety of looks and colors in the styling to find a style in this? Which would be most versatile to start with? Minori's video says to choose lighter ones than the type for Gyaru...but the white zombie-like ones, I find look too harsh and spooky for a soft look.

Beyond brightness/contrast and curves there's no real filters. I am using proper studio lights though but I think really good lighting helps with this type of make up.

I had some friends who did homestuck cosplay for a while so I sorta followed their process but with white make up instead. Gave this a try today and thiugh I do find that the *application* works well (as do the base layer of barrier spray), just using barrier spray to seal just doesn't. Even after three layers (all dried in between) I was sticky as ever. I couldn't even apply beauty make up because it'd just fuck up my base layer.

Admittedly I used Ben Nye and not Mehron but I can't Imagine the difference is that drastic.

Has anyone tried airbrush paint? Mehron never looks as smooth as I want it to...

Anyone else giving the white base layer a try? I'm thinking of just ordering what Minori uses, Mitsuyoshi grease paint and 2-way foundation cake.

It doesn't run at all. With that particular, I put the make-up on around 7 o'clock in the morning. It stayed on perfect until I removed it around 6 pm.
I do think it is inportant to apply the 2-way foundation cake as good as possible and do not try to mis any spots. Without it, your make-up will run for sure. Also it's very shiny without it.

I also used it for my neck that day, because of the lack of a better product. And I had to keep retouching it throughout the day. So I don't recommend it for anything other than your face.

I want to post a make-up tutorial on my page someday. But I found Minoris tutorial very helpfull.

I googled but all that popped up was a trademark directory and an English translated version of a geisha/wedding Rakuten seller page advertising the grease paint alongside some Mehron products. I saw in her video that Minoris teeth are quite yellow - that helped me a lot to accept my teeth. I thought about doing what Geishas used to do and make my teeth black when doing shironuri, however I think I'm just going to just leave the teeth be.

I find that with myself, nothing really works for the neck so I usually cover it up. I think it's because the neck moves through out the day quite a lot so it begins to crack - in my experience anyway. I've used both Ben Nye and mitsuyoshi

How does the Ben Nye compare to Mitsuyoshi? What method did you use for each? If there are cracks (say in the face from too much smiling) are they fix-able with a touch up? I saw in one video of Minori that she was trying hard not to laugh/smile. But she smiles in others with no creasing.

I wish there was a group of people actually practicing too. I got some greasepaint, liquid white makeup, barrier/sealant spray and I have various powders. I tested the spray on my regular makeup and it works well but no tests yet with the white greasepaint. I have an outfit that is basically CPK, a wig I like and a couple of pairs of horns I want to paint (large and small) and I'm ordering some round glasses.

Yeah would be nice to have a lot more selfposting to share WiPs and stuff but /cgl/ just seems to be very anti-selfpost even if it would be helpful. At least we've had one personal post their quick trial run look. I've already posted my shironuri outfit WiP in a thread after it arrived in the mail but I'm hoping to hurry up and get the makeup practiced so I can try the whole thing. It's just a little awkward trying to 'play dress up' with family around in the house though.

With Ben Nye it is extremely thick so I find it works on my greasy skin, I use a flat sponge (I would just a different shape but I always forget to buy more makeup sponges!) and dab it on - it takes two layers and then I fix with Baby Powder. I used to use Stargazer white powder but I found it smelt really weird (not sure if anyone else had this or if I just had a dodgy one). On the face I touch up with ease - but I find with my neck its more risky throughout the day as occasionally it can get on my clothes when Im setting it, hence I dont bother with neck and wear clothes to over it up. I find it doesnt crack on the face but does on the next - maybe because for me it's a different skin type? My face is quite greasy but my neck isnt - that could be the problem

That's what I bought since all the Mehron stuff didn't come in compact form and Minori made it look so much easier to use compact than loose powder. I haven't taken the safety plastic off mine yet but I'm hoping it doesn't have the weird smell you mentioned. I'm using Mehron Clown Lite and Stargazer and I have mixed skin (gets greasy but also gets dry and flaky when I don't scrub it regularly) so hopefully this'll still be a good combination of products. I tried Mehron before in the topic but with baby powder and it don't work that well and I got advice from anons so round two now that I've got the Stargazer powder in.. after it took a solid month to arrive.

If someone knows about Reddit, we could have a shiro nuri reddit. I hate FB and I know a lot of people won't use a FB group for stuff like this.

The 'powder' Minori uses in her demonstration is actually a powder foundation, which is a much more 'clingy' and opaque product than loose or pressed setting powder. I've noticed Misako also sets her liquid makeup with one (both skin toned, the under liquid color lighter) in her makeup tutorials. I think that's how they both get such good coverage.

This anon here. Since several methods have been mentioned in the thread about how to use products I figured I'd sort of try them all? Got my supplies together and since I don't want to waste too much greasepaint I'm gonna try them on my arms.

Anyone have any other methods they're curious about? I'm trying Gropey's spray+greasepaint+spray+cosmetic layer+spray (no powder or lotion involved) and Minori's lotion+greasepaint+powder+cosmetic (no seal) and maybe a mix of the two to see which comes out less patchy and easy to apply various kinds of cosmetics over.

Results won't be as good as if I tried my face but the inside of my arm is close enough for this kind of thing.

Well, the paint did cover pretty well using his method but it's super sticky despite three layers of barrier spray and if you even tap your finger against the paint it leaves some paint on your finger and a smudge on the paint. If you press your finger lightly against it even for a solid two seconds and pull away, it takes up a whole chunk of paint and leaves whole patches gone on your paint.

It's also so sticky that if your wig brushed against it, I don't doubt that your wig/hair strands would stick right in and you'd ruin your makeup just trying to get them off.

Here's one I just snapped. My camera washes everything out even though it's super bright in here. I just washed the application place and put lotion on it for Minori's method.

As you can see, I have really visible veins so I'm using that as a guide for how well stuff covers along with if it looks patchy/too clumpy from powder or not.

Makes sense. That is the same spray I got and tested so far on my regular makeup which is the lightest shade of NARS cream compact with finishing powder over. It sealed the color (I rubbed it, no transfer) and looked good most of the day on my dry skin. But the NARS is not greasepaint, it's silicone based creamy foundation and unfortunately unavailable in white. I'm thinking of mixing in some stargazer white liquid foundation though and powdering and spraying. Many goths do this trick and it looks white even though it's just very light.

I think you should make up your own style from things you just like. I'm going to thrift/buy secondhand for mine so I can do one cheaply and alter the pieces and then use some vintage kimono and obi pieces I have already. Okay here's Minori's method.

>Stargazer White Pressed Powder
>same variety of cosmetics in same order as before

Okay, after my first bad experience using loose baby powder I expect it to be terrible looking but it's actually pretty smooth looking aside from the bumps on my arm and the little hairs.

I can also quickly press my finger to the patch and have barely any powder come off and the patch looks completely undisturbed after. It's super smooth and soft feeling with no stickiness from the paint.

Once again like with the first method, the best performing cosmetic products were:
>2nd swatch, Yanqina
>3rd swatch, Yorom
>5th swatch, Kleancolor

The eyeshadows did work but weren't as vivid and smooth looking in one go as the above listed products.

Extra note, Minori's method made my arm a LOT more white than Gropey's did. I put on two layers of paint with both methods so compare >>8437084 to >>8437157 plus add in the sticky vs non-sticky argument and I think Minori's method is the clear winner.

HOWEVER! I did spritz on Mehron spray twice to ensure maximum coverage over Minori's method test swatch just now and let it dry fully.

It's still very soft and smooth feeling, no stickiness and I ran my thumb over the entire white part of the swatch and didn't leave any marks and only removed a small amount of powder.

Also did the same thing to the cosmetic swatches and the only swatches that didn't smear were:

>1st swatch, Kleancolor lip liner
>2nd swatch, Yanqina liquid eyeliner
>4th swatch, Malibu Glitz eyeshadow
>7th swatch, E.L.F. eyeshadow

So for this method, eyeshadow and waterproof eyeliner seems to be best, even with barrier spray.

Lotion, kryolan supracolor clown white (medium sized tub: the bigger the tub the creamier the paint) applied with a dollarstore make up sponge and baby powder tapped onto the skin and brushed out/off with a kabuki brush.

I'm >>8390730 >>8390713 and when I tried Gropeystyle it wasn't with white paint. It got about as even as it usually gets for me but I found that it applied thicker and more even (using the two fingers method), as well as became... Lighter, to wear. It didn't feel as present on the skin. It didn't affect sealage to the paint itself and I personally found that the difference to the coverage wasn't huge, but I'm a Homestuck so I've been using body paint for like three years at this point so if you're new to it YMMV.

Sorry if it's been asked before on a previous thread, but what sort of Kabuki brushes do you guys use? Is there any particular brand which is better than others? I only ever use brushes and pads but I'm wanting to look to other methods of powder application

I picked up two cheapos at H&M for the sake of body paint. One I only use to powder body paint (cream base + PAX) and the other I use for body paint contouring as the first one can be hard to wash out, especially for PAX.

Not strictly shironuri since it's cosplay but I thought I'd get the best help for this as well. Trying to do the American version of Sadako and I'm wondering if I should I mix paints or try eyeshadow to get the right look?

What I thought wasn't enough around the eyes in the mirror turned out to be way too much in photos and my face lines are pretty sloppy but I hated that I went to all the effort just to delete all the pictures and I figured maybe it would give others some incentive to selfpost as well?

So yeah. Definitely going to learn from this and switch from eyeshadow pencil to the Manic Panic eyeshadow in red someone suggested and for the face marks, probably use Minori's technique of mixing eyeshadow with water to make eyeliner.

About the wig, it's one of my cheap cutting ones since I haven't fully settled on a wig yet. I think it's way too much white already but I can't think of another color aside from black and that just seems like it would make it look odd?

tl;dr this is way harder than it seems and no one should feel bad about selfposting their works in progress or design attempts because it definitely is practice makes perfect

I have a synthetic Makeup Forever kabuki meant for their HD powder. It's dense and soft. But the ELF kabuki that looks very similar is almost as good and $3. That's saying something too because I really don't usually like ELF.

Stargazer white liquid foundation over pore-filling primer powdered with Stargazer white pressed powder.

I tested Stargazer white liquid foundation today because I have it on hand to lighten regular foundations and it's a liquid that doesn't cause breakouts or clogged pores like greasepaint can. Unfortunately, on its own, it is not pigmented enough for even white coverage. Applied with a flat, synthetic foundation brush (MAC 190), brush strokes remained visible through powder. Applied with triangle sponge in a pouncing motion, it was patchy. I tried one coat and 2 coats applied both ways, powdered by press/rolling with powderpuff in the usual way, brushing away excess powder after a minute or so. Neither gave even, pigmented coverage. While it's great for lightening regular foundation with no issues, I don't recommend this foundation for shiro nuri.
