A hint with this design! Apply your top coat from the tip to the base of your nail, rather than from the base to the tip. If your red polish smears or runs, it will be "running" in the direction of the blood drips, rather than the other way.

Nail decals are your friends! Although if your curved you may have some trouble getting them to stick.

Mostly though, just practice! I've been painting my nails weekly for 4 or 5 years now and I can do every design on both hands. You will get better.

Take a cotton swab or tooth pick, roll a bit of tape on the end of it, then stick the fake nail to the tape.

sorry to be kinda gross in an otherwise pretty thread but my nails are ridged, extremely brittle and look a lot like pic related - am I fucked? I just want my nails to look and feel healthy again, all of the pretty nail art stuff etc seems so far removed from what I'm able to achieve right now.

I paint my nails on the weekends but I've seriously considered wearing gloves at all times because I want to have my nails done so bad. I went from kitchen to a job where I pretty much had to have my nails done at all times and then back to the kitchen, the change has been hard.

If you aren't taking biotin, I recommend trying it for a few months to see if it works for you. It really helped my nails.

You can also try nail strengthening serums, like nailtiques formula 2, or a nail brighter, like gena nail brite.

A healthy lifestyle and diet can also help with nail health, even if you are only able to make small changes.

These changes will all help to improve your nails' appearance over time, but you can also work with what you have now. Buff your nails, and use a ridge filler/basecoat before applying any polish. That should help to smooth out your nails, and the polish will hide the color.

My nails started to have a lot of ridges (but were never yellow) when I wasn't eating. I'd go a few days without eating, and after about a year got really sick and found out I'm anemic. I have a much better diet now and my nails look normal again, and don't break easy anymore.

Thank you so much for the advice anons, it's a better response than I could have ever hoped for.

I'm looking into taking biotin, I'm going to buy nailtiques formula 2 since reviews seem excellent, and in the meantime will get a ridge filler to improve their current appearance. I'm also having a good look at my diet to see if anything can be improved - I eat healthily and in moderation but I'm Vegetarian so I may be a tad low on certain nutrients, so will try to address that as well.

OPI has been the shittiest nail polish in my experience. I have about 8-10 colours, and they are all so prone to chipping, some within a day, even with the same base and top coats I always use. I'm also not a fan of their brushes. On the other hand, I've had fantastic experiences with Revlon and Sally Hansen, and also Essence Cosmetics.

What helped me master my right hand is that instead of trying to do steady brush strokes with my non-dominant (left) hand, I hold the brush still and move my nail against it, so all the fine motor control still comes from the hand I'm good at.

This doesn't work for intricate designs though.

Oh man, I had the worst nail-biting habit. It didn't matter what nasty shit you smeared on it, those things would end up in my mouth one way or another. My nails were stubs, and honestly I didn't even notice how weird they looked.

What ended up helping was I knew I was going to play violin before my cousin's wedding, so I decided a few months ahead to not bite my nails... just until the wedding. Just to look nice, it wouldn't effect my playing of course.

Anyway, because I had a specific 'deadline' and then I could bite as much as I wanted after that, I didn't give up. It's hard to quit for good, easy to quit just for a little while.

Anyway, what happened was by the time the wedding rolled around and had passed, I was actually over the habit! I had little desire because it had just been long enough that I didn't have the craving. Like quitting smoking I guess, haha. I haven't bitten since! (Other than the occasional hangnail bite here and there).

I still remember the first time I could click my nails on a table top... it was amazing :0
