Goddammit, this is definitely the last con that I'm pre-ordering for. I pre-ordered when it was $40 for three days, but now that the schedule finally came out and has revealed itself to be shit almost a month after the last day when you could get refunded, I feel like I've been had at this point. I remember last year they had some really unique stuff, like a panel I ended up missing that was about how ol' Blighty is depicted in anime. This year, we've got TWO Minecraft panels, and all that sweet, sweet whitespace.

Any suggestions for which panels might possibly not be shit? All the panels I'm planning to go to so far are either game dev-related or trash that I'm planning to attend as a joke. I want to get suggestions so that I don't end up just sitting in the video rooms the whole time, having paid $140 to watch anime.

I was initially disappointed that I won't be able to go to A-kon for the entire weekend, for the first time since 2009 when I started attending. But, from what I've seen, if I'm only able to make it Friday, I don't think I'll be exceptionally disappointed, this year seems kinda bland, and A-kon has been a bit boring the past few years.

>> No.8355683

>>8355186

How much of a "first" were they? There were several different timelines for panels. If you were a panelist last year, you got the link early. If you knew someone who had the link, you got to submit even earlier. I was a very early submission (within the first 10) and have no ties to UNT (not a native Texan or DFW person) and my panel still got rejected over someone who submitted a month later (no idea if that person has UNT ties).

There's no rhyme or reason in what happened this year. You could have done a successful, at capacity panel last year and gotten rejected this year. You could have submitted early and got rejected while others who submitted late got approved. You could have been rejected for an awesome idea but a Q&A wannabe panel got approved.

The rumored deals that got made after the fact (people being unrejected) were with groups A-kon realized they shouldn't have pissed off or it seems like a few gulls who did complain enough (but also had legitimate reasons to complain).

If you're talking about MEK panels, I was always under the impression that since they were a large, established anime organization they were kind of like "semi-guests" at the local cons and got programming. I always felt like they weren't competing against everyone else and I don't think that's a bad thing.

Hey A-Kon people!

I grew up in DFW and loved A-Kon when I was in high school and early college. I've since moved to California, but I have really been missing A-Kon. Today I have the post-con blues from being at Fanime all weekend, and I happened to notice that A-Kon is a week and a half away. I'm hella broke right now, but I would love to go to A-Kon again!

I haven't been to A-Kon since they changed locations, and I do have a few questions for you regulars. How do like the new location? Does the Dealer's Room look like the top or bottom photo? How is the Gaming Room? Does it have shmups? Sega Saturn? Arcade sticks? Is it dimly lit, or brightly lit? Carpeted, or hard flooring? Does it have arcade machines? Is the Gaming Room 24 hours?

Thanks!

Hey A-Konanons, I just booked my flight to DFW, and told my family I would be visiting. A-Kon 2015 is a go go for me. I am so excited to go to A-Kon again!

>>8356695
Ah neat, I like that because then you can get all your shopping done in one place. I still wish the rooms were fancy and nice like the old one though. Walking around on a hard floor under blinding lights can be kind of draining, plus muh nostalgia of the old venues.

>>8356894
Anon, I can't say for certain, but typically con prices can be all over, rarely cheaper, sometimes more expensive, but usually pretty comparable. The benefit though is that you can sometimes haggle a little bit on the price (especially the later part of the last day). Also, a vendor is usually willing to give you some discounts when you buy lots of things, and they will also remember you next year. I have a really good relationship with the couple that runs Anime Depot (they sell anime, not figures though. inb4 >buying anime). The're so sweet, always remember me and what I'm up to in my life, and they usually give me some sort of discount for being a loyal customer and buying lots each con. My friend is a big spender with ABC Toy For Me (I don't think they do A-Kon though), and he gets a pretty nice discount there. So my advice is, if you have a bunch of figures that you want, try to buy them all from the same vendor and ask for some sort of discount for buying so many at once. Also, be friendly and personable, it helps.

>> No.8356928

>>8356901
>I've heard you'd be better off paying online prices, but don't quote me on that.
Sort of correct! Let me explain proper figure buying at a con.

>>8356894
First off, rest assured that you won't have to worry about bootlegs at A-Kon. I've heard that isn't the case with every con. Now, most of the dealers will be carrying relatively new figures. Do your research! A few days before the con (actually, now would be a prime time to do this), go on AmiAmi or whatever site you usually use to buy online and scroll through the figures AND check their prices. THEN check the shipping cost. Add that price together and keep it in your head or in a notebook. Just know the online price basically. Now, when you get to the con, you will very likely see a higher price than that one. Subtract the price online from the price at the con. This is the convenience fee. Do you feel that this fee is fair and justifies you spending a little more to buy your figure now? Go for it!

Shopping tips:
>Go around the room a couple of times. Dealer A might have a better price on Product 1 than B does, but maybe B has a better price on Product 2, which is what you want to buy.
>Remember that some figures you want are sold out or their pre-order period has closed. At this point, you are at the mercy of the second hand market. Keep this in mind if you're face to face with a figure that has say a $10 convenience fee but is sold out. You might just want to buy the figure at the con.
>If a price is unfair to you, try to bargain (works better late Saturday/on Sunday). The worst that could happen is that the dealer says no. Don't be an asshole, though. If the price is WAY FUCKING BETTER online, just buy it online.
>Don't be the asshole that buys four figures and puts his friends in charge of babysitting them.

I just remembered that Texas charges for plastic bags now. Many dealers and even the AA may not have plastic bags. Bring either your own bags or a reusable tote for your own convenience.

AnimeFest is fun and very relaxed since it's 4 days, but the last 2-3 years it seems like their attendance has dropped and programming has gone downhill. It's still good to hit up though.

Akon is the largest con in TX. It's also about 10 years behind the times. Their programming this year is ridiculous and they always book the same guests over and over again. If you are into cons for meeting people then go because of its size. If you are into cons for guests and panels it sucks.

ANT is on it's 3rd year this year. It's still young so a lot of it's issues are forgiven. It's in the fall so if you are bored go hang out.

Never done DCC can't comment.

Ikkicon is the definition of average. Average guests, average programming, average size. It's in Austin though so it gets bonus points for that. It's not downtown this year though so it might lose all those.

Anime Matsuri is the con to go to if you care about japanese industry guests or Jfashion. The will try to screw you over but you won't care because how else will you see these people?

San Japan is not as big as akon but it's still big and its programming doesn't suck. They're also starting to bring in fashion guests if you are into that.

From the southeast (NC/GA/FL)

I just plain disagree. The people you hang with matter, but the con and how it is run also matters.

Megacon for instance is gigantic. But it is essentially a giant dealers room with no programming, and shitty wristbands instead of cool looking badges. Hotels are not convenient to the con.

Metrocon has an insane choreographed cosplay chess/fire show every year.

Animazement is full of preteens. That means homestucks/hetalia/vocaloid and the like. Animazement is usually fun though.

Dragon*con is for the partying. Yeah some people go to get Stan Lee's autograph for 1/2 a day but most want to have a good time and there are almost no anime/weebs.

Katsucon/AWA have top level craftsmanship. Katsu has a gorgeous venue and AWA is great for the "last con of the season" chillness.

I'm sure Texas has different con "identities" as well, which is what I need to grasp before dropping mad dough on prereg for everything.

Do you think cosplayers mind being hugged for a picture?

Granted I'm not a smelly unhygienic fuck and I'm only hugging with one arm, I am aware some cosplays can be sensitive and took a fuck ton of hours to make. Though I find it kinda awkward if I just stood next to them in the picture.

Very different con "identities". A-Kon's the Big Con, been around nigh forever, has a great venue that it's probably going to outgrow in the next five years (which is going to suck because there isn't anywhere bigger in the D/FW area unless they spread the convention programming across multiple hotels and just IMAGINE those logistics). The primary staff does their best but are really so reliant on the volunteer staff that it's difficult to get all the ducks in order in a timely manner (see: programming's boo-boo this year) so it always turns into last-minute drama and the cavalry having to arrive in the nick of time. I can say this from my experience last year: I pre-registered for the whole weekend and got delayed and had to show up Friday instead of Thursday: there was a serpentine line outside the badge pickup that was stacked full, with one entry point that divvied up between pre-reg and on-site with volunteers to give directions to which line to go to. From when I got into the serpentine outside to the serpentine inside and got my bag and badge, it took less than 2 1/2 hours of wait time. That's a level of efficiency I've never seen at a convention the size of A-Kon. There was a serpentine outside the Dealer's Room/Artist Alley, both opened on time and once the line was moving (entry was through Artist Alley so they could keep a pop count for the fire marshal) it moved fast. If Registration and the Dealer's Room are that on-point this year, I can forgive a dozen programming schedule snafus.

I'm also running a lolita nitpick panel if you're not the fujoshi type.

>>8367949

This. Buy your badge early next year and then get a refund if you decide not to go. If you can't afford $40 for an early badge, how can you afford the con? People complain about A-kon and want it to change, but don't put money into the system.

But see here's the problem. People want to attend but don't want to pay. They don't feel that the con is worth paying, but it's worth their time, gas, maybe hotel, energy, etc. to still go, but only if they're ghosting.

The problem can't be boiled down to "A-kon is shitty" because all of these idiots still want to attend despite it being shitty. The problem is people are cheap fucks who would rather copy a badge than order early, save up the money to afford it, or even share with a friend.

This isn't white knighting A-kon, it's a critique I would put to ANYONE who wants to get something for free for ANY con, good or bad.

Exactly. That's like me saying I'll boycot Chick-fil-A but still eat it if someone gives me a free sandwich. It's still support.

Stop pretending you're boycotting and admit that you're a cheapskate. Either do like >>8368005 and don't show up, or figure out a better way to afford the pass. if you can afford to attend the con even as a ghost, you can afford a badge. And if you can't afford the badge, you can't afford the con.

I'll admit that this year programming screwed everyone over. Generally, I'd say that the best way to improve programming is for people to submit panel ideas that are better than the ones they complain about. However, with A-kon at this point that's being done. Many anons purportedly submitted quality panels and were rejected. In this case, the way to fix programming is to fire the programming head and have a turnover in staff. A tall order, but it's not like A-kon didn't want to improve programming already. They did ban Q&A panels.

What will be a better message is for people who have bought badges to go to the panels that are fresh and interesting. If you've bought a badge but don't attend all the stale panels that constantly show up at A-kon, that's a much stronger message. You're saying, 'I paid to attend this con, but I don't want to attend those panels" instead of fully opting out of the whole con.

It's nice that you want to support AA, but you're not supporting the con which is how dealer's and AA can still exist. If the con goes under, then the artists lost that con as a selling place. If you really want to support the dealer's hall and AA, you should support the whole system.

A-kon has probably already picked a date though. Granted, it still could be the exact same weekend but that's on DCC for picking the A-kon weekend. I do hope they don't fall on the same weekend. That's going to hurt both cons.

Exactly. You pay for that badge, that gives you the right to complain as a customer. If you ghost you lose that right. You can use your voice in two ways. Either don't show up and lose them a body to count or pay for the con and give them feed back as a patron.

>> No.8368149

Not unless they adjust to the situation (lower ticket prices, better guests, etc.). Better guests being a battle that Akon will lose by default.

>> No.8368176

>>8368149

But it's not just about guests. Even with DCC having "better guests" the structure of those cons are different. Comic cons operate differently than anime cons. I had a terrible time at the Dallas Sci-Fi / Fantasy con because of this. Regardless of guests, I'd still choose A-kon. So yes, it still hurts both cons because for some congoers, it's not the guests that count.

>>8368147

Exactly!! I have zero sympathy for people that whine about the con but ghost or use illicit means to get a badge. I pay for a badge knowing it might be a crapshoot, but at least I can leave adequate feedback for panels. I also don't have to worry about switching badges with a friend, sneaking in somewhere or getting caught. I can do whatever I want. It's way worth it to me. $40-60 to have total freedom to go to whatever panels I want, or browse dealer's an AA whenever? That's pretty much $1 a week saved up over a year to actually experience the con. I personally don't get dolled up in cosplay and plan for months to sit around and bitch while I ghost.

The most secure place is in the designated A-kon parking lots. Unfortunately these are across the highway from the Anatole, so you have to do a bit of walking. You CAN park at some of the hotels, but it's technically for guests so there's always a tow risk. The Anatole parking is strictly for guests only.

Wherever you park, read the signs. Some lots in Dallas have different rates for day and night and if you don't go plug it for the night rate, too, you could get towed or booted. If it's a no parking zone, they will definitely boot or tow.

>>8362548
I think I know who you are, but if you're not in that household, then maybe come ask my side of the story sometime? I'm not verbally abusive to my friends; I know it might not seem that way because of circumstances and rumors, but I pride myself on how loving I am to people I care about. Anyone who has been my friend, especially a close one, should know how protective and affectionate I am. If they think otherwise, there was obviously a misunderstanding or disagreement between us, which is okay; I know I am not perfectly able to express my feelings all the time--I had a pretty tough time growing up, so I know my anger can get the better of me, especially since I am great at keeping stuff bottled up. I have apologized to everybody involved in "that" situation and any other situation where I felt bad for fighting with the other person. I don't like to fight and I don't like to hurt feelings--really I don't. I still roll around in bed at night wallowing in the guilt I feel for hurting people who I've even made up with, even my best friends who've long since forgotten. I'm extremely hard on myself. If anyone is still upset over anything, they had the opportunity to talk it out with me, but chose not to--or they have not been completely honest with me about how they feel. But that's okay. Making peace doesn't make the pain go away. There's a lot of times when swallowing my pride or gathering the courage to make amends still hasn't gotten rid of how hurt I still am. But like I said, there's two sides to every story. And I'm 100% positive the people who are upset at me right now have their own opinions and feelings on the situation and aren't just being evil. Only reason I haven't brought my side of the story publicly is because I don't feel it's everybody's business and I don't think it's right to post about people on Facebook. I know I did one time about my ex, but I still feel really fucking bad about it and believe me, I tried my best to make up for it. But like I said, mistakes happen and sometimes the pain people feel doesn't go away even if you want to make things right. And I have accepted that... And the only thing to do after that is move on.

I have a great deal of friends and love now that I felt I didn't have before and I feel okay with myself for the first time in my life. I want to apologize to the two people I've tagged in this post especially, because I know I've let people down and hurt them. But please believe me when I say that I'm completely aware of all my flaws and mistakes and I work hard everyday to correct them. This year has been super rocky and I'm really appreciative of all the support I've gotten or just those who've stayed neutral.

Also P.S., Sunlit doesn't use these boards or w/e (I'm only here because I did a Google search this morning out of curiosity). I'd rather keep her out of my drama and I think it's unfortunate people are gossiping about her just for being associated with me. She doesn't talk badly about anyone else and has chosen to pick no sides on anything. She's a very nice girl and I don't know where I'd be right now without her.
