I'm making this costume for fanime, and I'm like 70% done right now. I only have small details left to do.... except for the boot covers. I finished my pattern and test-run of the boot covers and it all seems good but I don't want to rush it and ruin it. I still really want to wear the outfit for fanime, so is there a good alternative for boots? I have some generic blue gogo boots (the kind a lot of sailor mercury cosplayers will wear), and a pair of doc's which are both roughly the right height. I can also try and find something at the thrift store maybe... any advice?

I have materials for both a thin striped version which is more accurate to the artwork design across all the games she appears in and a thick stripe version which matches her in-game sprite. Thanks, yes to an extent. The colour is actually brown. I'm spraying a black plastic baseball bat brown, I chose a slightly lighter shade because I had a feeling it would either dry darker or would be influenced by the black underneath and if neither of these are true I should be able to just apply more to get a slightly darker colour.

Then you should be good without Gesso.
I'd be hesitant on the sanding though. I've sanded and spraypainted part of a plastic prop and I guess some chemical in the plastic reacted with the paint and made these weird bubbles. The coated-areas were fine, it was only the sanded areas that were affected.

Oh and I forgot: rub the bat down with alcohol before painting. It'll help clean it so the paint sticks better.

I've used this tutorial for some leather pumps and they worked well. Not so sure about how it'd look for you though, since the shoes I painted didn't need to stretch/bend a lot so the paint didn't crack. I would assume that if you stretched the shoe as the paint dried like the tutorial says to do, it should be fine.

Hey guys, does anyone here have first hand experience with filling uneven edges on foam armor/props? Not entirely sure what foam it is since it's an old yoga matt (nothing on the label), it's quite dense though.

For ease of sanding/also due to using 5 layers of 4mm foam (this is a "make for free with leftover scraps prop") I've ended up with really uneven edges after gluing every part together.

I use foam a lot but I've never had this problem because everything I've made has had straight and not angled/sanded down edges, or I've sanded after gluing layers together.

Now I'm not sure what to do, because I'm worried about fucking everything up if I take the dremel to it again. Should I use some kind of filler over the foam and sand that down by hand? I've seen people suggest using masking tape on edges but I can't imagine that holding up under sealant+paint?

Any advice on where to go from here would be much appreciated!

holy shit anon, are you makind a yosafire cosplay? I'm so stupidly happy if you are.

I've velcroed/safety pinned foam wings to the back of my garment before (had a school girl collar to cover the place where they connected to the back of the garment)

Have also just tied the wings directly to my bra. Cut two holes (vetically) in the back of the garment and tied the wings directly to my bra.

You could also sandwich wire between the wings and build a U shaped harness and slip the harnes into your bra. Still need the vertical cuts in the back fo the garment though.

>mfw can't ms paint

All of these have worked for me with very small and light wings. As other anons have pointed out, wings will still flop and people will be contantly bumping into them in small places, but they're not too much of a hassle once you're used to it

Purple Cargo Pants
-are deceptively difficult to track down.
Best pair I've found online was like $40 pre-shipping, and of course "may fit," as with all online-ordered clothes.

Does anyone know a reliable place to order less common clothes from, and/or a brick n' mortar store that commonly carries purple cargo pants? I've called at least a dozen local shops; to no avail.

I know this is a notably mundane thing to post about, but they're all that are standing between me an a Rival costume.

Which, I'd rather do the purple pants vs. the black jacket.
A. Because the pants are probably cheaper than the coat would be
B. Because local conventions all happen in the summer, and it's hot here.

I've not a sewing machine, and all the local joints what have had white cargos (to dye) up to this point only had them up to a 32 (I'm between a 36 and a 38).

I normally use the shinier side for my more 'royal' princess dresses, but the cosplay I'm working on might look better with the matte side.

The light novels describe it as light brown, but it's warmer than that in the anime. If your skin doesn't do bright colors, you can lean towards a light brown more.
Epic's Copper Red might work?
Arda's Dark Copper Red seems to be a little lighter. Salmon seems to be even brighter, bit the wig options are really limited.
MatchWigs also has this:

White makeup all over your torso and face. A lot of them have sweated off their powder in some of the reference shots, but the most instantly recognisable thing about them is a powder-white torso.

You'll need Ben Nye white creme colour, BN white clown powder, and some kind of spray sealant for your face (at the risk of sounding like a BN advert, I use the Ben Nye final seal - but their white face makeup is the best I've encountered). For your torso, you should look into PAX body paint.

For something that has the potential to be done too simply and go unrecognised, a good War Boy cosplay needs to have good details. Distress and weather EVERYTHING, take it out into a driveway or parking lot and rub it all over the pavement (especially on knees and hems), rub dirt (or fake theatrical dirt - you can find that online) into it, smear baby powder on it. Make a prop, too, like those exploding pikes.

If you want your eyes to look extra crazy, get contacts that have white irises (not the full white-out lenses, those are for blind characters).

Anyways, solid choice. Just saw the movie and I am honestly considering buzzing my head just to do Furiosa.

>>8341723
Carve it out of insulation foam, cover with spackle or filler, seal and paint? To get the jaw to open and close (I'm assuming you want it to open and close with the movement of your mouth?), look up furry head tutorials. If you just want a hinged jaw that you can open whenever, make a hole at the hinge point of the two pieces and insert a brad or dowel. Look up "how to make helmet with hinged jaw".

Okay, so... Ah, here's the thing.
I want a little bit of help with something. This is months and months away, maybe even a year away if I can't afford it soon, but I wanted to put together something for Halloween.
It's going to sound cliche, but I want to be a creepy doll. And I was going to sort of go all-out (not like, super expensive, but expensive enough to look good.) So, I'm going to try to go for a gothic lolita coord with a monster/gore-doll twist.
The help that I need is going to be in the picture related:
>Have skirt, know it looks good on me, but need a petticoat (in purple).
>Going to go with deep purple and black as the color scheme.
>Have shoes picked out but not bought, yet.
>The shirt is what worries me.
I'm buying the shirt from Amazon. I want the shirt in picture related. Like I said, I'm not going all out, because it's for a costume, not fashion. However, I HATE the cuffs for the sleeves. Does anyone know how to cut the cuffs off to make them shorter? I want to make a new button-up cuff at about a 3/4 sleeve length. I would be adding an elastic band under the fabric so it can stretch, and over it I would like to add a deep purple ribbon with higher quality black lace attached at the end. I'll have to draw a pic for what I mean at some point.

I'm not the best at sewing; I can hem, I can fix holes, and I can hand-sew in fairly straight stitches. I do own a sewing machine, but I haven't used one in a long time. How hard will this be to fix if I follow tutorials for hemmed and cuffed sleeves?

Also... The shirt is sold by M4U, and I'm worried it is Milanoo hiding itself under another name. Then again... This is for a costume, so that's not the biggest worry if I can make it look acceptable in the sleeve department.
Should I just go to a professional seamstress?

Oh, just because I want it to be a fully black and purple coord. I don't know, just some sort of weird OCD thing going on. I'm not really a fashionista, but I love matching things in a certain way.
The top and skirt are black, so I thought it'd be neat to have a purple headband or whatever (maybe purple ribbons in my hair), then the black shirt and skirt with a purple petticoat, then leggings that look like bjd legs (costume, so I think that should be okay. I'd get regular leggings for a regular coord.)
And the shoes I've picked out are black with purple lace and a purple ribbon on them. I'll probably get the shoes first so I can match everything with the purple on them, anyhow...
Sorry, I just went on a rant there!

You should replace the elastic with a longer piece. Stretching the original isn't a good idea because if it does eventually stretch out to what's comfortable for you, it means that the rubber itself has broken down to some degree and will degrade quickly and break soon.

As for working with it, I've found that a fresh piece doesn't stick very well to a dry one but a bit of water would probably help. I also found that it sticks better to a gesso'd surface. You're definitely gonna need to find a good overbust one, but I think that all depends on your bust size? I'm not sure-- I really have no experience with corsets.

I'm looking to make some clothes look/smell/feel smoke damaged. I'm not beyond genuinely half-burning them, but I feel like that should be a last resort... Should I try holding them over a smoking bonfire or something?

Hoping to look along the lines of pic related.

>> No.8351414

>>8351393

If it's just the look, you can discolour the clothing by dying them unevenly. Tea works with most natural fibres and is pretty easy to do. Only thing is looking up real burnt fabric and trying to figure out a way to copy the uneven-ness, like having the darker brown bits being closer to the burnt edges and the rest of the fabric being a little lighter. You could use a black or brown fabric pen to simulate the charred areas.

For real burns, you can use a lit cigerette or a lit incense stick to slowly burn the edges. You can leave little scorch marks as well if you don't burn all the way through the fabric. Add this with the dying above, and you should be able to pull off a convincing burnt dress look.

I have nothing on the smell though. You may need to smoke the dress like a salmon filet for that...

Okay, so this will seem like a really dumb question. Sorry in advance. BUT. Can you BUY a pocket?

I own two fitted jackets that could use an inner pocket or two just for my wallet and keys. I was thinking about learning to just sew them in, even though they're kind of fancier jackets and my skills are non-existent when it occurred to me. Is the technology there? CAN you just buy a pre-made pocket that just kind of velcros or irons on to the intended fabric?

If so, how in the hell would I even look for that?

A chef jacket would be loose-fitting whereas Hanayo's outfit is form-fitting, so the effort + time needed to mod the pattern a ton (if you can even find one) makes it not worth it. You're better off looking for a pattern that gives you a close-fitting jacket or top and go on from there by adding a symmetrical front panel.
Box pleats for the skirt. Don't follow the example of that particular cosplay you've posted; her skirt trim is poorly done and the skirt needs a lot more ironing.

Knits have a stretch to them whereas woven fabrics, like twill, don't. This probably means that your pattern will need to be bigger for your fabric or you'll have to alter certain parts to make it fit. I don't know what you're making but if it has to fit over your shoulders or hips or some other part wider than the openings, you'll have to account for that. I would buy some cheap woven fabric to make a mock up first.
