Last one was fun, let's keep it going.

Some interesting topics brought up in the last thread

>Is Lolita too strict nowadays in regards to pressure for coords to be extremely matchy-matchy and photoshoot-ready instead of wearable fashion?

>Old western designers/known lolitas/blogs/sites

Feel free to share coords, old photos, or whatever.

Does anyone have more examples of the early stages of the fashion, pre-2001 photos seem to be rare as hens teeth.

I always loved the look of bloomers under an elegant dress. I hope, since OTT classic seems to be the new it thing, peeking bloomers come back in style. The fashion has gotten a lot more standardized and brand-monogamous. Not in the sense that people only wear a single brand, but that there's a set of lolita brands, and in general that's all people wear, along with off brand that's in the same style. VW has a distinct identity outside of lolita and it just doesn't "fit" as well anymore. You see a lot more street fashion-y elements and style mixing in old school lolita, especially in the shoes and handbags, that you don't see nearly as much now.

I gotta say, the old non matchy look used to look rather incoherent. Pretty glad that brands started putting out full sets (I find valuing creativity in not wearing a full set overrated, especially as the anons who value it will pick someone wearing a slightly mismatched outfit over someone who looks good because "it's not a fullset").

I do think the whole "lolita rules" has been taken a little bit overboard, though. Whoever thought cutsew + skirt isn't lolita or that lolitas must always keep their shoulders covered hasn't had enough history of seeing brands put out cutsew + skirt, sometimes with tank tops instead of puff sleeved cutsews. I just wish I'd saved the brand ads or stock photos to prove this. The styling in some of them were obviously lolita except for breaking these rules, I don't think they can be brushed off as "non lolita burando" either.

Really? I used to follow closely in 2008-2011 and then quit until a few weeks ago, and what I've found upon my return is an explosion (relatively) of indie brands and new designers that aren't all lumped together as simply "offbrand". I feel like there's so much more variety now.

I'm still kind of adjusting to the extreme-matching obsession but I figure since I usually go for a toned down "simple" outfit when I do bother dressing up, I still don't really care about policing exact shades of cream.

This. I see lolita as both a fashion and a collecting hobby. If I really like a particular series, you're damn skippy I'm going to buy everything matching for it and wear it together fairly often. I'd like for the fashion to, not necessarily move towards oldschool, but at least be more accepting of oldschool coords that aren't just simple block colours or black and white. There's so much more to it than that.

I really love >>8312964 , even though it's gaudy by today's standards. I know that, as >>8313327 said, the non-matching look can look a bit odd, but even to a lesser degree, it makes the fashion look a little more personal. I don't think there's anything wrong with wearing sets, and hell there are a few full brand sets I'd love to get my hands on, but I'd love to be able to switch it up a bit without being called ita. I haven't, but I feel that if people see a coord that isn't the cookie-cutter AP/IW ideal of what a coord should be, they'll tear it apart.

Don't take the ita or nitpick thread too seriously. People in there are now picking apart coords if they don't like a particular pair of shoes or some such small reason. Nitpick/ita threads are on 4chan and not egl for a reason, its beginnings were rooted in making fun of girls, not something constructive or educational.

I think there can be a middle ground where we don't diss the girls who don't look 100% matching while also not dismissing the girls who are wearing full sets as "cookie cutter". Even "cookie cutter" girls have taste and choice, they chose to coord their dress with the socks and headbow of the same series because they like the way it looks. There really shouldn't be any pressure to force someone to look for matching socks and headwear outside of a particular series just so that they aren't dismissed as "cookie cutter", or to force someone to buy everything from the same set just to prove they're not ita.

True, but sometimes brands put out mismatched ads not because it looks good but because there's nothing in their collections that season that does match. Like when AP releases Wonder Queen and the model coordinate featured bright red engineer boots that didn't match the coordinate at all. It's not because "brands say it's okay to wear shoes that don't match your outfit at all!", it's because they didn't have any wine red shoe releases at the time.

Regarding both this magazine and old school Lolita, I do feel Lolita today is too strict in terms of things being so matchy-matchy and more like photoshoot clothes than an everyday wearable fashion. I like both cords that are perfectly matched and more crazy, unmatched ones. Both are a different look and both can be cute, I wish people were more willing to accept both styles. And I wish the wearable-ness of Lolita would return.

i think the matchyness arose in part due to the awful, awful itaness of many westerners back in the early-mid 2000s. old school itas make a lot of stuff posted to the ita threads now look passable.

no one knew how to dress themselves so rules were established to keep out people who did not dress well. i do not even think the rules do much good because:

>availability of real lolita items makes old school ita mistakes less likely to happen
>new itas don't follow rules anyway

I'm talking about style of the clothes and what they're paired with, not the number of different designers. I've been following the fashion since the stone age, and there's absolutely been an explosion in the number of designers, but that explosion has gone hand in hand with a lot less mixing of the pieces with non-lolita (/otome) brands. Popular taobao and indie brands fit in the same basic style categories as brands like Baby or Victorian Maiden. You see a lot less mixing of lolita brands with brands/items that have strong *not* lolita identities. In the old street snaps you see a lot more mixing of lolita with other styles.

(not the anon you were talking to)

If you're talking about the experimenting, it's still going on. Girls wear AP salopettes for fairy kei or decora, or slip a few lolita brand items into a non lolita coord. A lot of girls still use non lolita shoes, bags, blouses and accessories in their coords. Whether you love them or hate them, peignoirs, madonna crowns, and flower crowns are the visible results from all the experimentation that girls are still doing.

If you're talking about how VW is no longer being worshipped by lolitas, well, it was inevitable. VW was not lolita in the first place, and when lolita matured the styles split up so much that it's harder to get lolita style and VW to reconcile now (see the alligator skin purse comment above). Besides, we're lolitas, it doesn't make sense to expect us to constantly shoe horn in a non lolita brand for no particular reason.

I tend not to think of stuff any later than say, 2006 as old either, probably because I feel ancient and attended my first meet in 2004 (in an admittedly dodgy Bodyline/Cosmates dress). I kept the bodyline dress for reasons of nostalgia/ no sane bugger would buy it, yet sold the nice older stuff, I don't know what I was thinking - now I'm slowly buying older releases back(!).

I most recently picked up the Meta OP in pic related for instance and it's currently in the post. I believe its from 2002.

p.s. I've been aching to know who some of the lolitas in these threads are. It's as if we seem to exist in a strange space, where egl is dead and tumblr doesn’t feel quite familiar enough (and in my case, makes me feel a bit old and seriously uncool)

As an outsider to the whole thing I get the impression that older lolita was closer to Harajuku alternative styles, but has since branched out into its own domain to such an extent that Lolita really feels like it has nothing to do with Harajuku anymore. I get the impression that people into Lolita nowadays care more about fashion and clothing as a whole and are more receptive towards mainstream trends than people into Lolita before which were always in some part expressing themselves as a permutation of gothic or alternative culture, even if they weren't directly involved.

Compared to back then, it seems that people are more concerned with outfits being flattering nowadays. UTKs are flattering on practically no one, so people often recommend other types of legwear instead.
When I started getting into lolita there was a much bigger emphasis on looking like a (creepy) doll and frumpiness was tolerated if not encouraged. In modern lolita the emphasis on looking cute/pretty trumps the creepy doll look so UTKs, which call attention to (knobbly) knees and make most people's legs look stumpy, are much less popular.

It wasn't so much the boob projection that was an issue, as width/ volume - they didn’t quite fit into the bodice section and my underboob sat slightly lower than the bottom bodice seam. I have wide-set slightly low placed boobs (not especially saggy, just 'normal'/average) which is part of the problem - I think it can be more of an issue of build or set than cup size sometimes.

I just hope the right bra can fix the issue as I've wanted the jsk in question for so long. I don't want to wear unflattering cuts just for the sake of it any more, I prefer to be practical these days.

As far as I know UTKs aren't what causes the knew sin. The "no knees" rule is (or was, people are more relaxed about shorter skirts these days) against too-short skirts, not what legwear you wore with them.

They are yeah, although they weren't available for several years (especially the early ones) and have recently appeared again in places such as www dot avantgauche dot co dot uk (one of the original English language lolita fashion websites) which previously had a bunch of broken links. They are also available again on jmagazinearchives at blogspot - you can download zip files of all the bibles there (there were also lots of broken links etc here up until recently). I recommend people grab them whilst they can before they disappear again.

To be honest because of the availability (which is awesome), I'm more interested in older obscure pics from early Kera etc and defunct mags which are much more difficult to come by.

I wish lolita was more like the old days. I'm still young and in the early 2000 i was only a preteen and i knew nothing about lolita but i feel that lolita lifestyle, the simpler cuts, casual styles, no need to buy the latest burando piece or following the trends was more appealing for my taste. Now, i see the most thing closer to lifestyle is only hoarding pieces and wear the most OTT coordinate, casual lolita is ignored or labelled as ita even with acutal burando cutsews and simpler skirts, most lolitas nowadays wear the fashion only during meets or cons . I dislike all of this because it loses that rebellious, "fuck the normies" allure, for this before we had more lolitas that were into alt subcutures like goth in the past. Modern lolita become like a cosplay competition, unlike other jfashions except for more OTT stuff like shironuri, rather than a real street fashion.
I noticed in the old street snaps, i see what the girls pictured listened, maybe old school was somewhat connected into listening to some artists like Malice Mizer or some visual kei. I really loved that.

Keep in mind anon, that not everyone wears lolita to meetups and cons because that's the place to do it. In many places it's just too goddamn unsafe to wear anything that stands out when you're alone. If I could wear lolita every day, I would. Unfortunately it gets worn to cons more often because they are a part of my life (staffing, vending etc) and to meetups because of social gatherings of similar interests. As much as I love it, I find it impractical. The minute I go out in lolita alone to run errands or do whatever, I often worry about my safety. People are nuts.

Actually the picture you quoted is from the Marie Antionette movie with Kirsten Dunst. Marie was born in 1755 and died in 1793. So actually this is exactly the era you just referred to (normally approximated as 1750-1780).

The difference between your dress and the other is that it is English in style and origin and is more basic and suitable for outdoor activities whereas the above is French and is more elaborate and risqué due to the fact that it would have been worn in culture of severe decadence inside the Palace of Versailles.

Errr...

I said the 1750s, specifically, because the image I quoted (which pretty much most people would know is from the Coppola film) is modernized version of fashion in the 1770s. The 1750s are earlier than the 1770s, hence the joke of "true old school." I said nothing about an "era."

Also, the dress I posted is a court dress--certainly not "suitable for outdoor activities."

The super elaborate French court dress you're referring to would only have been worn for certain court occasions: being presented to court, weddings, formal balls, etc.

>> No.8332377

>>8332366

Fashion didn't really move that fast back then though. The 1750s-1780s were an era altogether, before Antionette's influence set in in the 1780s, another different era in fashion altogether.

Also the French dress would have been worn by aristocracy regardless of occassion. This is Versailles we're talking about, everything was to be as perfect as possible all year round. It was all about getting a seat closer to the king, there were no 'casual clothes'.

I'm really confused as to how you could think the costume from Marie Antoinette is more elaborate and less suitable for outdoor activities (although what outdoor activities you think an upper class 18th century woman would be doing in said dresses, I don't know) than the bulkier, heavier 1750s English-made dress.

Different anon, fashion student.

Panniers of Marie Antoinette were extremely restrictive and meant the wearer couldn't even bend down to pick up a dropped item. The idea was if a woman could afford to wear a dress with a huge pannier, she was extremely wealthy because she could afford the servants who would have to do EVERYTHING for her because she couldn't move.

>> No.8333083

Anon was specifically replying to an image of Kirsten Dunst & co in relstively informal court dress from the 1770s, not restrictive/formal court dress with wide panniers, such as in the portrait you posted. The peach court dress would be far more cumbersome to manuver In because it would require a nearly floor length, stiffer, almost box shaped pannier, likely made from wood or bone due to the fabric being heavy, as opposed to the informal robe a la francaise in the film, which would only require a small pannier for support

Goth girl and gothic lolita. Is it weird I think the goth girl is hot? Anyway, I love those chunky shoes.

Is it me, or did gothic lolita crossover with regular goth more back in the day? I'm not sure what it is exactly, but the feel is different.

I definitely see more goth makeup (like black lipstick) in old school.

Use 'From Japan', it's about as straightforward as it gets and all automated. It's a bit like having your own ebay or yjp account without actually having to sign up. You can work out the total for your items, including fees etc before you bid as well. I've started using them recently with no problems at all.

Also anon, Japan post is super reliable, even without insurance. A friend of mine ships tons of crap from Japan and never bothers with insurance, tracking etc and has never had a package disappear. The only trouble he had once was when a package actually arrived in his homeland.

Don't be anon! I use japonica, they do all the bidding for you, even if the email system is tedious. I've been buying for a while now, and the only problems I have had was insane shipping on a parasol (brought that one on myself though) and wristcuffs smelling like smoke.

I think you're right, and I think the effect is in the makeup and the shoes too. Those are definitely not "modern lolita" shoes. The tights, too, would probably be nitpicked.

There was tons of goth crossover back in the day. I kind of miss it, it had it's own appeal.

I feel out of place sometimes because I like every form of Lolita, the newer styles, the older styles, all the substyles. I've never really hated any of it but I know there's so many people who just can't stand one style or another. I think they all are appealing in their own way.

Thank you for the encouragement and the advice. I would love to try it someday, I need to work on learning more so I can shake off my fears.

When I went to the yahoo japan aution page, it showed a button that said "click here for overseas" and sent me to what appears to be their forwarding service? anyone know anything about that? I take it that it's still better to go through one of the places mentioned than that?

I really do like the crossover. Influence from non-lolita styles can bring more creativity. The shoes in this outfit give it charm, I think.

Personally, the only style I actively dislike is wa lolita, and only because I have only seen two good examples of it. Every other wa lolita coord I've seen is terrible. Qi lolita can be quite cute, though.

One of my favourite models is Ringo because she has such a cute old-school look. She's like someone you'd find in an old fruits book with a modern twist.

Is it common to get insane shipping for parasols? I saw one I wanted to gnab for cheap secondhand but if that's the case, I'll just skip it.

I have too! I can't seem to find them anywhere and just resolved to having to figure out how to make some myself. If anyone knows where to buy some I would be super interested.
