By the way update on bico.

Like i said some time ago, bico seems to be ''saved''

They listened to the very angry players about the update and decided to change things accordingly.

Plus, they are constructing a pretty big fort wich will kinda look like that with removables piece of wall to simulate breach.

i see pics of the project on facebook plus pis of other building being built.

OldTown = around 15 player built buildings and 1 bico built building (a tavern)

Newtown = probably more commercant stand and maybe some player buildings, and a shower place

LowTown = no new construction permited, only renovations of existing buildings. (Lowtown is build too close to the river and too low so nobody really want to build there)

Orc camp = finaly building a fort or something, i'm not totally sure

True faith plain = only one new building, true faith prefer to build crusader camps with stockades and all that normaly. but seems like its a lost tradition.

Mage's Plain = one of the battleground that will have the fort build on it . this year it is estimated that the first face will be built and ready to play with. wich i am very excited for.

There are rumors of every weapon doing 1 damage only but i really doubt that.

it is confirmed that this year will be the last where sword in duct tape will be permited.
and other weapon in duct tape will eventually be banned.

I think its a way to make homologuation easier and add a better overall look to the games...wich i am totally fort.
Plus...some of the weapons maker are friends so...yeah...if they make more money with that i'm kinda happy for them.

Hum...i dont know what else...many changes this year

I'm joining a reenactment group or at least considering it. I know its not larping but it's in the same family, I would think. Anyone do that kind of thing? I might be nitpicky. It was regarding type of material (cotton vs linen) and the fact that a lot of them seem to machine sew their garments/purchase them from sutlers that mass produce questionable stuff.

It's the closest one in my area (literally the next town over) I'd honestly rather do Civil War but I've been itching to have a reason to make some gear and I figured this would motivate me.

in long event that last a week there is food places where you can buy food BUT , if you want to have your own food (wich is nice and will cost you way less) be prepared to have adequate refregiration.

If you just want to have stuff to eat without spending all your days around a stove here's a little list of good stuff to bring. (plus its all histo looking stuff)

- Jerky
- bread
- Dates
- apples
-clemtines (because fuck oranges)
- Cheese (take a old cheddar or something like that, nothing that will become soft and smelly too fast)
- nuts
- dried fruits
- chocolate because you will get the cravings if you are a sweet thoot with a fatass like me
- all kind of dried meat or fish

10/10, would use subtle machinations of inter-family politics to arrange formal courtship.

Unrelated, my latest project: Generic pearl captive bead earrings i've been producing. They cover hundreds of years, don't look jarring, and are made of pearl and jewelry grade brass. Im making them with slightly larger piercings in mind, with 14, 12 and 10 gauge in production with various diameters and pearl sizes.

Character creation really varies by the group in my experience. With some it's easy enough that you can put together a character ahead of time and just run it by the staff when you arrive, with others you need to be walked through the process the first time.

As for getting into it, I think many of the more experienced larpers in this thread have a good idea of which big larps are good. They can probably recommend a few in your area.

>Tell me gulls, how did you first get into it?
A lot of the LARPthread folks are immigrants from /tg/ but I'm a gull. I played D&D in middle school, and heard jokes about LARPing (though I thought it sounded pretty cool). Years later, the person I was dating took me to my first Alliance game and I was hooked. I've been playing in various games at various times ever since.
>What is the draw for you?
I like feeling like I'm *living* in another time/world (I'm not a huge fan of single day games as a result). I also like actually doing things rather than rolling dice- it's much cooler when you're actually swinging the sword.
I also get a huge boner for overly intricate costuming.
>How do you create your characters?
That will depend a lot on the game you are playing, the setting, the other people playing, and a lot of other stuff. If there are volunteer/NPC roles in the game you're planning on trying you should always do one of those first to test out the game and get a feel for what would work.
Also, sometimes character ideas come from dumb places. I started playing my spider character as a joke because my girlfriend was deathly arachnophobic and I wanted to freak her out (which absolutely worked, btw). Now it's 5-6 years later and it's my longest run character, who has grown significantly past just being a prank.

Started with tabletop gaming, then started doing World of Darkness pub-larp due to different social groups mixing at parties. Then I started field larps due to a bunch of other friends who had been at it for a while enthusing to me about it. That's why I started field larp way later than usual (16 years after my first tabletop and 13 years after my first pub larp)
>What is the draw for you?
It's a lot more visually appealing than tabletop, and it let's me roleplay with a hugehuge aunt of different folks I normally wouldn't. I also tend to get more emotionally involved at a larp than a tabletop. And hitting folks in big battles is always great.
>How do you create your characters?
I get a base concept of what I want to play, then I look at costuming. Detailed character stuff tends to come naturally the more I play that character.

>how did you first get into it?
i remember when i was something like 10 me, my lil bro and some friends found some kind of fence picket that were pretty much the size of a sword. so we did what any kid would do...beat up each other with it.

Fast forward 5 years and i see this little medieval themed café and i'm like...okay why not. i go there and they sell stuff like latex weapons and armor and i'm like...OH GOD NYEESS and one of the guy is giving swordfigthing training and i'm like... looklegit.jpg so i go with one of my friend and i do some training, place is nive and they provide swords to train and all that. also meet new friends, then one nigth we are to perform in a tournament during a larp nigth in front of the players.

after the figthing we are to stay in character as the figthers and meet the people and i end up enjoying it.

did that larp for some time at the café until it bankrupted (because medieval café are not that popular in the early 2000') and then the same dm did a game on a terrain and it was 'kay , stoped in 2005 for some years and after a voyage in france in 2011 i decided to play a crusader at a larp and one of my friend brougth me to bico.

>What is the draw for you?
hard to tell really, having fun , meeting new people , dressing up in reenactment costume and seeing what the other people did. also the ambiance, the immersion far from the city life. and the combat...OOOOH yes the combat.

>How do you create your characters?
i used to have big storylines and background story for my character when i was young....then i realised that nobody care about that.

have your character fit in the 'verse , dont be a special snowflakes, i make a suit, then i immerse myself and depending of what happen in the game and how i feel the game and my group it can change , i'm flexible.

Jonathan ''Joe'' Ferguson

Farwest.

it was a npc but the dm told me to ''go my own way'' with it.

Started as a saloon owner with a taste for money and who had whores an criminal connection.

the more players interrogated me, the more the character got revealed by improvisation and the character was pretty much a heart of gold behind a brick wall formed from seeing too much.

created some backstory for players to play with, would be too long to tell them all here but it was a way to give them quest while still providing atmoshpere and a little backstory about the other character from the village.

Did someone say first character cringe?

My first character was a 'lolgypsies' character named Elyitzah (pic related), created for me by my girlfriend (we were 15/16). She was literally a sockpuppet character to be used as a damsel in distress/tagalong for the things my girlfriend did. Her only points of character were being hot and being a lolgypsy.

I found out later that she was SO 2-dimensional that some of the other players nicknamed her socks because the only thing even slightly unique about her was that I wore rainbow socks sometimes.

Then I retaliated and made my spider character, and everyone liked that except for my girlfriend (though, the original iteration of the spider costume was... cringe-tier).

Well actually this was my second character as I had to level up in the system and then make a new character as dark elves were unlocked at a certain level.
Anyway I was sane enough to mostly dodge the cameras back then so there is very few photos about me from that time.

That said I would like to think that my costumes improved a lot during the years.
Funny thing is although that unlike most of you I don't really have any character that I would consider my main one. I have several ones that are on several different games and nothing that really my "signature" character

I'd have more 'main' characters if I played more LARPs these days... all my other characters have been retired or the games have folded. The spider seems to be the only one I've consistently enjoyed through the years and never gotten bored of.
Pic related (right side) was my long-term Vampire character, Megan. I played her for 3-4 years. She started off as a ghoul but became a big bad Vampire priest with the help of her sire (who is now my fiance). That game is how we got to know each other, even though we played together in other larps (well, we actually got to know each other when he offered me a ride to a game after finding out my previous ride had flaked on me, but that never would have happened if we didn't know each other in game).

...I'm Bay Area as well! Here's the list of all (decent) local LARPs, most are held in the mountains around Santa Cruz and they all have Facebook groups that can be found by searching the name:

Gaslight- Victorian 1860's England setting, mainly-roleplay world of darkness (ie: Vampires, werewolves, etc). Lots of fancy costuming, no Steampunk. They hold full weekend events and practically have their own little town.

Dark Prospects: Same as above, but set in the old west in a gold rush town
.
Realms of Conflict (RoC): Dark fantasy game with a hugely open set of rules that allows you to play pretty much anything you want. Boffer/sword fighting game. The game is very good, but is also the most expensive in the area because of the location they use.

Alliance San Francisco: The California chapter of an international game, I play my spider character here. Classic fantasy setting, two different campaigns to choose from (with very different flavors) simpler rules than most of the other local games, and a great community. Another boffer/swordfighting game.

Firefly LARP Bay Area: A day-event only game based on Joss Whedon's "Firefly." Cowboys in space! The game is played with NERF guns, but is strictly 18+ because it's held in a bondage club during the day (I actually started this game, but it's in the hands of a close friend of mine who has drastically improved it).

There's also a handful of local Werewolf/Vampire games here and there, but I haven't been to enough of them to have an opinion. Word on the street is that Bay Area Masquerade (BAM) is entertaining. There is also supposed to be a local NERO chapter, but they're not really... well organized.

That being said, when and if you need custom armor made, find a leathercrafter or blacksmith (you may need to source from Europe for actual metal armor, but you can go to Esty for leathercrafters) and work it out with them.

I could write you a 20 page dissertation, but I have a four day event this weekend and need to get ready. I'll keep it short.

1: Weird pseudo haute-guard mounted from backplate that magically floats unsupported, is too low to the shoulder and will bind like a mother fucker, even before its bent

2: the sternum of the psuedo do-cum-breast plate is a bizzar shape and just doesnt make sense from a physical mechanic standpoint. the entire torso armour looks like one big bind.

3: Where are the spaulders mounted? Why do the bicep lames sit on the front of the bicep rather than the side?

4: bracer comes too far up the arm, has huge open lacing/ hinge(?) gap, and goes to far down the wrist.

5: FUCKING FLOATING BACK IF THE HAND PLATES FFFFF

6: The fauld makes no sense articulation-wise. Its like a psuedo bell-cuirass but has no anchorage

7: Cased greaves way too far up the calf with no shaping, and how do they even open?

Long story short: This is armour drawn by someone who has no idea how armour or the human body works mechanically.

Also, WTF is with the shitty body proportions? Goddamn look at this mutant!

2. The chest plate armor is Laminar armor slightly over lapping in places.

3. Since the body is turned toward the viewer, that is the side of the bicep. It is attached to the arm by thin leather straps. Which is then attached to the pauldron.

Honestly, it sounds to me like most of these problems are more to do with the translation from concept to paper than with the design itself, or cases of the artist simply leaving out small details (which, admittedly, is a terrible thing to do if the point is to make a design that a crafter could work off of). At least half of your problems with it are answered by a simple "there's a buckle/strap/rivet here that they neglected to draw" or "this piece sits this way, the artist just didn't draw it quite right."

I mean, you're absolutely right that a lot of it wouldn't be as effective as an existing piece of historic armor that has literally no downsides by comparison. Anon wasn't asking whether it was optimal armor, though, he was just asking for how to go about making it.

Pretty much a mash up of characters from books/shows that I like, I'm horrible at accents but I try my best and hope I improve. Costume-wise I get an idea (usually from warhammer fantasy and historical stuff) look at what materials I have available then work from there.

Also does anyone have any tips for re-attaching gauntlets to gloves? the tips of the leather gloves keep tearing off no matter how many times I sew them back on with thick upholstery thread, at least one finger breaks free every time I wear them to an event. Alliance is not a 'great' LARP, especially compared to 'muh European quality.' There is also a huge difference in quality between chapters. I really like the national sense of it- I can fly to a different state and there will still be a game I can play in, and I can still play my spider. I also enjoy the particular setting of Alliance. I like it because the flavor of the game suits me, and there is no social penalty to me going all out with costuming (nobody has ever said "Wah wah, you're costume is too good! Go away!" to me, it's only ever been positive) but it isn't necessarily for everyone. Our chapter is very... cut off from other chapters, and comparatively it's very small which makes it easier to police ourselves to make the game better, but it's not secret in any way- we like getting newbs even if they are painfully new for a while.

Low-profile games are usually carefully planned one-shots or smaller games run by groups of friends for their friends, rather than publicly available games. I've both played and run the 'secret' games, and one of them expanded into the now public Firefly game (it was invite-only in the beginning). Getting involved in those kinds of games is about having friends who want to start a game like that. You can always (gasp) start a game yourself if none of the local ones suit your flavor.

I really have to keep saying this every thread, but there isn't a super secret conspiracy of LARP villages hidden in mountains away from you- it's purely a matter of finding a game that suits your personal tastes, and the easiest way to find that game is to ask around and get involved.

I've gotten nothing but effusive support from my local game, but I also go through great lengths to not interact with a lot of people from my game OOG. Maybe I'm just a little insulated from LARPing culture at large.

>Putting in effort for things that aren't either considered manly or that don't make you money are generally seen as suspect.

Buddy that's a thing in just about every nerdy subculture. Shitty guys trying to be hypermasculine is nothing new. and certainly isn't endemic to the LARP scene.

It actually goes beyond that in the US. From /tg/:

>It's a product of the relentlessly capitalistic culture they've got. The "rat race", I think, is the term. The time and effort they spend larping is only suitable for children (who have nothing better to do), or for those who are already wealthy. For everyone else, if you're spending lots of time and effort on something and not making money, you're wrong. You could be spending that time making money instead. They're brought up that way, and so it's not surprising when their 6th-form kids are unwilling to try hard for their hobbies.

That's a little true and a little bullshit. I'm 20 and I feel the squeeze of our glorious Reagan-era economy, let me tell you. The social pressure to just finish college already and get a job is palpable, and talking to anyone outside of my age group about what I do in my spare time is painful because I'm simply not a productive guy.

At the same time, a LOT of people in my generation and the one before waste prodigious amounts of time, and that's where most of our LARPing population comes from. That being said, most of this wasted time goes to other hobbies. As I stated earlier, there just is not a big LARP culture out here, so it really doesn't make sense for people to go all out. Why would someone put what little disposable income they have into something that they do maybe once every two months?

hey all, i'm trying to make garb for SCA, and I'm having a bit of difficulty tracking down non-fancywear, that is, average clothes worn by average/poor people, not the fancy clothes seen in a lot of art.

to be specific, I was wondering, do vests sort of like pic related appear anywhere in SCA allowed periods? I know bigger vests appeared and the pants are most definitely not period, but the vest seems like it almost is-similar examples appear about 1700, so I was wondering if there was anything close a hundred or so years back. Essentially, did small vests exist in renaissance/late medieval periods?

Vests like the ones you posted or "doublets" have existed in a variety of forms throughout all the middle ages. Alternative to doublet, you might find what you're looking for under the name "pourpoint"

Empire was fantastic. Fucking knackered though.
Battle story
>Playing an enemy Orc on the Sunday battle.
>Run around the corner of the Fort
>A wild 4chan Redwiw appears!
>Redwiw fires crossbow at Scottish
>It's super effective!

Did manage to catch up with him very late on the Sunday night during Senate Knife Fight Club.

pic related is me just before the Saturday battle. I want some nice leather armour to go over the chain.

calimacil and latex are great.

one of new bico rules will be starting 2016 : all weapon of 110cm or less must be either foam or latex.

I suspect that longer weapons and arrows will eventually fall under this rule.

I am actually pretty okay with this for all weapons but spears have no real good latex or foam alternative yet and spear break pretty easily under the stress of heavy battle.

>> No.8359969

Expense, mostly. Even the cheapest latex stuff costs more than building your own noodle'n'pipe dicksword, and nobody cares if the dicksword breaks because it's either easy to repair or cheap to replace.

My LARP quite likes latex weapons in general, but when I asked about Calimacil specifically I was told they're not padded enough to be considered 100% safe. Might be more of that good ol' lawsuit paranoia permeates every public event here.

>> No.8360095

My new bodysuit arrived today- it looks better on me than the old one, the fabric is thicker and less warm and hugs me well all over (the old one bagged around my waist but was too tight around my shoulders and hip and would tear).
I'm going to get some elastic thread and transfer the fur parts onto it. I'm very excited about it.

>>8359706
Our game loves em', they're just not required. We've been seeing a huge swing to them as local craftsmen start learning how to carve and coat their own latex weapons, then offer them at affordable prices.
They've also become a lot easier to find in recent years- there's a lot more information and reviews of commercially available weapons, and it's a lot easier to find out if they've been allowed before for your game.

Something something safety something something eye protection.
In reality, it's about people having to learn new skills and the amount of effort people are willing to put into their games. A lot of people are just blustery old assholes who can't imagine having to make something that isn't a tube of fabric and pipe insulation. I don't quite like those people.

it IS harder but still safe. And I would say it's safer in a way that you won't have to worry about that the weapon is damaged and it will cause an accident becuase it's way more durable, the padding won't tear up and stuff like that. So on the long run it will have less accidents in my opinion.
Then again a weapon is at max as safe as the user

Glad I missed the mud at E1, I remember the Wintermark mud lake from E2 last year.

There was a great bit at the last Senate session when they were discussing the Skarscind situation. Just as the vote was ongoing a bunch of Wintermarkers had been found guilty of running an assassination business from their pub. Just as the Magistrate gave the order for the three to be executed, there was a huge cheer from the Senate building and the crowd outside for the vote passing.
So at the same moment, it was Wintermark at it's absolute best and worst.

The woman who got me into LARPing was in her mid-60's when I started, and was still playing into her 70's (pretty much till she died of old age)- and there's a guy in his 60's that not only plays in the LARP now, but made noble the legit way (that is, being a kick-ass healer that would staffwhip a bitch as much as cure a wound).

A lot of influence from boffer-combat games like Dagorhir, who consider anything you can't whomp people with as "useless".

What's amusing is that once games actually tend to use them, popularity grows quickly. Being stuck with boffer dickswords for a while, then something that actually looks cool has a rather positive effect on the "do want" bit. The only counter to that is, again, the combat-sport crowds, who will not give a fuck and use whatever they can tap-tap-tappy for maximum min-maxing and try and use kitespar wands that look like cat toys instead.

>> No.8363802

>>8360054

Cailmacil tends to take a lot more "breaking in"- they feel harder when they hit early on, but a well-used one does much less on the ouchiness. A lot of non-Calimacil weapons have a softer day-one feel, which leads to some games accepting those and not the "harder" new weapons brought in.
