Had an Empire IC social event last night. Was incredibly good fun, the host group put on a crap load of very tasty food, and sang some 4 harmony songs that they had written themselves. There was politicking, laughter, and almost a tear shed at one of the songs. Gossip was said and plans were hatched. Then we'll get all nice and lively.

Also the PDX Longsword open came and went. I got my ass handed to me by a couple of the more experienced folk there, but still placed pretty nicely. Best thing is that it took place at a little combination pub/park so after the fights it just turned into a big meet 'n greet for a handful of the HEMA groups around here.
So our club's got some new kids, and I've got some inroads with a Bolognese group that I didn't know about before.

There's a guy on the Alliance forums right now getting buttmad about in game time skips. It's pretty embarrassing.

Essentially, Alliance has a system called the 'hold' system. If someone shouts 'hold!' time IG stops, everyone stops fighting, also shouts hold, and depending on the game everyone takes a knee. Holds are called in the case of injury, dangerous situations, and sometimes roleplay clarifications if they are important to the fight. Usually it's for when something has gone seriously wrong on an OOG level.

However, there are time-pieces allowed in game (watches etc.) and obviously, since time IG stops during these *emergency* stops, when players get back in game their watches have an unexplained 'loss' of 1 to 5 minutes (which a normal player would either ignore or, if they really had to, say 'oh my watch must be wound wrong!' or something). Dude guy is apparently baffled by how to roleplay the loss of this 'IG time' and just can't even handle it.

Is he one of you guys trying to troll? It's so totally ridiculous that I wouldn't be surprised.

I really want to get back into LARPing, especially since my wife can sew exceedingly well and I met her after I previously quit, so I'd have some great garb.

I just don't know if I can handle how fucking weird so many LARPers are anymore. My particular LARP is Amtgard, and holy fuck, I've seen registered pedophile sex offenders and people who really thought they were druids who could see your "bands of energy" and heal you.

The actual fighting is just so god damn fun.

Amtgard is a LARP. Role play is involved in every group I've attended. There are quests, levels, spells you read out, stats. I fail to see how that isn't a live-action role playing game.

Two things:
Holding a line is a moot concept when most Alliance combat is a game of running.
Also it's a really good auditory cue to get a bunch of arguing nerds to sit down and shut up.

>> No.8315995

>>8315977
Obviously it depends on the chapter, but Amptgard is more of a battle game than a roleplaying game. From the games I've seen garb is minimal and usually not particularly in genre, and roleplay is not prioritized.

Amptgard players (and HEMA players) also have a habit of being jockbros who are into 'muh full contact' and 'get recked roleplay dweebs.'

Then my chapter is dramatically different than yours, because the answer of the PCs in SoMN to large bands of NPCs has traditionally been to form a shieldwall to deal with minions while a small group goes around to deal with major NPCs.

Oh, also a friend of mine and I are starting an in game adventuring group for newbs. We're hoping to lure them in with promises of money, magic items, and protection from the knights and then while they have their guard down teach them how to fight and help with their garb. The last adventuring 'group' blew up due to OOG drama years ago and nobody has tried to start a new one since.

>Though our shield walls aren't super impressive
None of them are, alliance rules won't let Roman style sword and board work and with the spear length rules one handed spear and shield is a hilarious joke. Add to that the fact you're using a bunch of different people with different equipment and styles of weapons and shields and you get a hodgepodge of shit.

I am incredibly interested in how these shield walls get around the plethora of equipment breaking, stunning, and paralyzing abilities that usually fuck up cohesive formations. Not to mention just plain old AOE damage abilities.

>The Battle Game Vs. LARP discussion
LARPs are what you consider them to be. My experience with Amtgard has been lackluster, but that's more of a garb/immersion thing. If your group lives up to a standard that's good for you, then it's a LARP.

Lack of organization on the NPCs part and having any of their NPCs who could use alliance's d&d wizardry to fuck up a formation are busy getting beaten on by whoever can swing the highest numbers and do the most magic.

>>8316111
I can only speak to my chapter, but the way we (as PCs) set up our line is we have all shields up front (usually shield and longsword). Behind them is our line of archers, surrounding the bundle of damage casters to keep them safe in case some enemy gets around us. Interspersed around there are healers who are stocked up with potions to cure all the paralysis effects, who run around and get people back up off the ground. Staff usually avoids using the equipment destroying stuff unless it's a big deal because it's annoying and difficult to get the tags for new items. However, if staff is throwing stuff like that everyone usually has at least one extra weapon on them (though their shield is fucked).
Meanwhile while all that stuff is happening, foolhardy assholes like my knight and I who can only deal damage from the back sneak in the trees behind the npcs and get them from behind, then we usually run away again.

A lot of the NPC cards that get sent out require them to be unformed or mindless, but sometimes we have to fight a proper batch of soldiers, then the NPC captains have the NPCs do shield walls like us.

Hit up Ravenskeep this weekend, it was pretty laugh. I didn't pull off any mindnumbing stupidity as it was my first time playing there and I need to know the lay of the land for that, but the gang did find a nice mix between weirding people out and gaining their trust.

what about da purple knigth?

Yeah i guess we just call him by is name ingame instead...

But more seriously, when we yell ''MEDIC'' no translation just Medic , everything must stop and it is not to be used ligthly, its only when a real injury happens or if someone fall in way that migth have been dangerous and may require assistance.

So far i've seen medic been yelled for
1- broken legs
2- broken arms
3- Somebody passing out
4- a girl allergic to wasps who was stung and we needed to make sure she had her epipen
5- a guy cuting is leg with his armor because he did not wear gambeson and it cut trougth the fat and skin to the muscle.
6- a guy who jumped in the river and a branch passed trough is boot and his feet. good thing the river was not deep because he was stuck we had to cut the branch underwater.

So yeah, accident WILL happen and the game only stop in these situations where somebody need to be taken care of or evacuated, and then it start back again.

When stuff like that happen i usually tell curious people to give space and since some players are paramedics or doctors, they can take care of the situation even if the marshal have first aid, having a doctor looking at you is even better.
Then if you cant walk, you are evacuated and an ambulance will bring you to the hospital.

Also...purple knigth migth be responsible for giving a broken thumb and broken ribs to 2 poeple ine the same guild

Look at that glorious fucker, being all swag and shit.

as many as I can. I doesn't really count it but this year let's see it was
- a demo play of voidship concordia at the polish larp conference KOLA
- Chronicles of Demgard still in the winter
- at Portal3 there was a small chamber larp
- Terra Nova now in Croatia
plus a few training sessions and battle games
That's just this year until now but later in the year I will go to
- the coratian TESC larp (two weeks from now)
- a "larp" we make for a school (320+ kids) but that's kind of different
- Chronicles of Demgard in the summer
- Drachenfest in Germany
- Lumina larp in Hungary
and there will be probably one Bulgarian larp and a few more hungarian ones but those date aren't announced yet so I don't know much about it.
And probably there will be another TESC and maybe a Terra Nova this year in Croatia and a here and there smaller chamber larps or one day events.
And of course battle games and training/workshop events as usual

Someone help a newbie out plox

So basically i'm taking part in a larp event in a few weeks. Basic character, bastard sword and leather bracers as system only allows limited funds.

In the future I want to have a decent set of armour (IE when i've saved enough gold in game to buy it)

Armour has been decided, basic plate etc. but helmet is where i'm getting stuck on.

I'm quite finicky about theming my characters on anything so I want to get some honest advice.

I'm planning to RP as someone wearing my families coat of arms and colours as well as our tartan. Only problem is our helm is a Frog mouth because we weren't a military order and operated as Esquires and Jousting enthusiasts.

Obviously frogmouth is designed for jousting so i'd probably be quite restricted wearing it.

The other alternative would be a great helm or closed helm with a Stork on top (Our sigil creature)

My family are pretty interested in what I can come up with, my nan (the scot) reckons a claymore, leather armour and a kilt in our tartan would do.

Advice?

Please no.
Also, "clan" tartans are a thing created in the 19th century. Historically, you'd find a rough corolation between colours/designs and certain geographical areas, but that was more to do with what dyes were available than any desire to identify with a group. Most clans wore a mixture of tartan, all depending on what the owner could afford to buy.

If you do deside to go with a kilt, get a proper one made, not some shitty lightweight nonsense. Something made of at least 16 ounce per yard and 8 yards of fabric.
This will keep you warm in cold weather, and be rugged enough not to get trashed.

Tartan kilts didn't really come into existence until the 1700's. Tartan wasn't very popular in the high and late medieval periods in scotland, though border plaid was common around 1500's. Also, elaborate 'Basic Plate'. A cuirass? That wouldn't be concurrent with a great helm.

Scotsmen were big fans of bascinets and mail, Scottish mercenaries in the war of the roses were using them as their primary protection, and Scottish derived Irish mercenaries using it well into the 1500's. Claymores were the most distinct arms, but axes, and eventually basket hilt broadswords were more common. I reccomend looking up 1200-1600's Galloglass (Mostly Irish in the end, but still) and Border Rievers (1500's-1600's, also made up of Northern Englishmen)

the other option is that the buffe is put on your gorget or in some cases the breastplate. This way it's obviously only "opens" down.

Both have their pros and cons, although historically the fixed to tghe gorget buffe is rarer than the to the helemt ones if we are talking about burgonets.

well, in normal use the 1,2mm won't bend either but in an accident it could pretty much bend. Also if it's heat treated and the heat treating is less then optimal then it can bend pretty much too... although I'm pretty usre that one isn't heat treated at all, it's just milled and bended to the right form and they called it a day.

So what I'm saying is that it won't last as much as a thicker one.

>> No.8323112

Surely it's better that costume armour isn't heat treated. It seems far preferable to sit on a helmet and squash it, then to sit on a helmet and get a tempered martensite enema. why? armour is there to actually protect you. and you don't need an authentic one for that. it can peretty much protect you from falls and and harder blows, that's why they are there. IF they constantly bend and fail then it's less protecting and more dangerous

I was hoping you guys could help me with some creative prosthetic ear solutions. Specifically, the ears in the pic.

Any time the temperature gets anywhere close to summer time, I sweat like a pedophile at Chuckie Cheese. This makes spirit gum too weak to hold my ears on. I could use liquid latex, but that will damage the ears and cause me to replace them after only 2-3 uses. And, to make matters worse, I'm going to be fighting with these things on. The rules state no head shots, but mistakes happen.

So, does anyone have a good idea for holding these ears in place that doesn't involve adhesives? If it helps, I will be wearing glasses as well, if anyone knows a way to attach the ears to the glasses without them falling off.

I'm pretty sure it isn't an orgy but I'm not that sure if it isn't a codeword for something else

That is hilarious! It's nice when guys who are not "into" the fashion dress up a little. Nice button up shirt, and nice pants. If you want to adding a bowtie, suspenders, vest, cravat, ect. It can look good but it's not necessary.

Basically it's annoying for someone to show up in T-shirt and jeans for pretty much the same reason i it's annoying for someone to go similarly attired to a larp. It looks bad.

But I dunno maybe they expect you to show up in your landsknecht gear.

I think it would be cute if you showed up in armor, but it's hard to drink tea and eat sandwiches in plate.

We tend to be one of the last opening. We normally have 6 barrels of various ciders and 2 guest beers. We were sold out pretty much by mid Sunday E1 this year. So we just had spirits left. Things got crazy!
