Hello again LARP thread! I come to you once more for weapon-making advice.

Typically I've only carried a big two-handed sword or polearm, and this has occasionally presented difficulties when I'm hit with a weapon-breaking spell or lose a limb. So I'm looking to remedy this by making an arming sword for backup.

Most of my experience is with two-handed sword, so naturally the types XIII and XX are looking really attractive since they'll match the style I'm already familiar with. I'm wondering if the extra length will present a problem when fighting one-handed, though. Do you think it's worth making something shorter, more in the Frankish/Viking style? Am I way overthinking this?

>> No.8278434

>>8278386
Are you overthinking this? Yes
Is that wrong? No.
Most importantly, choose something appropriate for your character.

Also range is your best friend, especially if you're using a sword on its own. Bucklers and shields and offhand weapons can be nice ways of closing the gap, but without some fancy maneuvering you're generally at a disadvantage if your opponent outranges you.

that method is especially good when using LEDs, as their bulb has the same refractory index as polyester resin, so they just sort of disappear if you submerge them in it.

In a project like this, where the entire tube has to light up, I also add additives. Selenite powder in this case to spread out the light.

Yeah, I've been meaning to make a buckler as well, so I'll have that at least. And the character's styled loosely after early medieval knights, for the record.

I guess it's mostly a question of, do I think I'll be disarmed but with both hands available often enough to merit giving it a two-handed grip? To which the answer is probably no, so I think I'll go with an earlier, one-handed design. Thanks!

I don't know, honestly, but they always 404 way before they've should. I've seen less active threads stay up longer than mine.

In any case, I'm a newbie to sca, and was wondering what modern gear is good to substitute for metal for protection. I plan on concealing my torso/whatnot with a surcoat or gambeson, and was wondering if something like a roost protector for motorbiking would be a good idea to wear underneath.

From what I've seen of Alliance, it's similar but lower-numbers. Deform (weapon-destroying) is a fairly commonplace effect that's inconvenient to fix, but not too difficult. Every kingdom draws up its own rules, but I doubt there's any real regional differences.
Anyway the armored fights are as advertised: you wear armor, you have a weapon made of rattan, and you all get together and wail on each other. No grappling or person-person contact. Good fun.

There's also Rapier and cut-and-thrust combat, which follows different rules regarding protective equipment. You wear lighter armor, but the weapons are usually steel. This is the stuff I've actually had experience with, if you want me to elaborate.

Former heavy marshal (Midrealm) back in 1998-2000. This will be 95% correct; some details may have changed in the interim.

Short version:
-Regardless of what the person is ACTUALLY wearing, they are "assumed" to be wearing mail on their legal target areas, plus a solid metal helm. Blows should be swung at a force sufficient to defeat this assumed protection - a blow of insufficient power to defeat this protection is a "light" blow and does not count. Weapons should not be swung significantly harder than necessary (yeah right).

-The legal target zones include: the entire torso, groin, neck, and head; the arms down to 2" above the wrist; and the legs down to 2" above the knee. A blow to an illegal target area has no effect, and repeated blows are subject to increasing bitchslapping from a marshal.

-Contact is by weapon, or "flat of the shield" charges only. Kicking, wrestling, grappling, and shield edge strikes are disallowed. Tripping techniques with polearms (etc) are disallowed. Some kingdoms do not allow shield bashes if there is a protruding umbo.

-Weapons are to be primarily constructed from rattan. Thrusting tips are 1/2" deep blue camp foam. Striking surfaces of mass weapons (axe, mace, and polearm heads, etc) are constructed from high-density rubber. Shields may be constructed from a variety of materials, but must be rimmed in such a way to avoid splintering (usually garden hose, but rawhide can work).

-Upon receiving a "good blow" (ie, hard enough to beat mail) to the torso, head, neck, or hip area (incl. the groin), the fighter is "dead" and may not continue. If a "good blow: strikes a limb, that limb is considered useless and may not be used for the remainder of the bout.

-Do not strike an unaware opponent from behind; place your weapon across their faceguard and inform them that "you have been killed m'lord".

(Armor standards do differ by kingdom, so I'll not bother with those.)

If your goal is specifically to make friends it's pretty simple.
1. Follow the rules of the game you are playing to the letter and don't argue with the organizers (not on your first event anyway)
2. Don't brag about how 'powerful your character' is OOG, especially if you're only powerful because of the rules not because of your personal skill
3. If you're already an experienced fighter, that's great! If you're not, ask somebody who seems to know what they're doing for help, and avoid hitting people in the face or balls unless the rules allow it.
4. Don't play an asshole character as your first character because that will be people's impression of you.
5. Have at least decent garb coming in, or politely ask around to see if you can borrow something good. If someone tells you something is wrong with your garb, accept their criticism politely and fix it.
6. If your game is a heavily roleplay-based game, stay in game for the entire event. No 'going OOG to tell your hilarious reference jokes.'

Essentially don't be an asshole and don't whine.

Follow the rules to the letter, don't be a fuckstick in combat.
If you have prior fighting experience, choose a weapon or fight in a way that is isn't going to be terrible for everyone else. Most LARPs aren't like HEMA tournaments or SCA events, and your goal shouldn't be 'to be the best.'
And most importantly, ask questions. If you're unfamiliar with combat rules, stop and ask someone. Need to learn more about the in-game world? Ask in character.

Ditch the other shirt. The reason euro larpers look so much more put together is that they dress like a reenactor. What you have there is essentially two undershirts, and one isn't even really medieval.

The idea of the undershirt is to protect your outer wear from your body soil, and make it more comfortable. If you can borrow or find a tunic, doublet or vest of a heavier or fancier material, that will look better. Otherwise, just wear the one.

Fulling in the process of beating the fibers until they fluff up and tighten, making a denser, fuller cloth. I use some rubber hand balls in the dryer, right after a good wash to full my fabric before making it into clothes, but you can toss the shirt in a dryer on low with some clean sneakers and get the same effect. Wash warm.

Long story short about larp wiminz.
Dont be THAT guy/girl who goes after every woman/man in a larp.

1- Dont expect them to be sane.
2- its gonna go really bad once you breakup.
3- you might very well end up in a long distance relationship.
4- other guys/girls will hate you because you stole their lOooOOOoooove
5- you have to deal with crazy ex
6- larp is like summer camp, you will have fun during the summer but once real life come back... youll find them pretty boring really quick.

Also we are not on /b/ stop with this cuckolding nonsense.

I had sex with woman in couple always under the consent and sometimes with participation of the boyfriend/husband and i shared my girlfriend with other men and womens.

Cuckolding porn is a gimick so the viewer can believe to be part of the action in a way.
so, instead of just watching a porn, they are watching a porn where the actress is directly talking to them.

Howdy namefriends. Noob question for any person who has participated in an foam sword, spell packet, not-full-contact type larp:

What type of weapons dominate combat?

I used to play at a larp in New England, and I distinctly remember polearms decimating and determining the flow of combat. Obviously that isn't the case in close quarters, but even in line combat, they can keep you a full spear's length away. Tower shields are not allowed, so if I pull sword and board I am stuck with something >38inches around. Duel swords don't seem... practical? Should I just resign my fate to the polearm overlords?

>> No.8300153

>>8300056
Historically polearms have dominated battlefields for a LONG time - and there's a reason for that. If you're prohibited from doing a good charge with a shield then yeah, polearms have no real counter other than wizards or archers.

>> No.8300297

>>8300056
It depends on your style of larp, if your game has enough people to do proper shield walls, polearms will destroy people. My suggestion to you is to get a polearm but also have a shortsword/dagger in your belt so you can drop your polearm if people get around you in close, separate combat.

Polearms hurt, especially in games that disparage aggressive footwork and extended contact. Basically you will repeatedly end up in situations where an opponent with a polearm can bomp you repeatedly without any fear of reprisal. If your LARP doesn't have bullshit rules about 'charging' your opponent, you can push him out of his comfort zone by moving into yours.
Unless this is a battle game and there's actually formations and shit, because then the meta will be and should be heavily weighted towards polearms.

>38 in shield
>not practical
Rodeleros, Scots, and just about anyone else who carried a shield in Europe post-1500 rarely carried shields larger than 30 inches. Mind you most of that is because large shields are just giant grappling handles, but it's not like a small shield is an impediment.

Pretty much larp attracts the worst sort of women because a below average chick gets treated like a queen, even the most disgusting mentally unstable hamplanets get worshiped by desperate forever-aloners. When I first started Larping I was with someone who hated it but I had a good time because everyone knew I was taken, as soon as I became single I got treated completely different by all my friends and every time I went it consisted of being hit on non-stop. You wanna know his secret? That is actual armour from India, that was made by armour smiths reproducing real armour to be patinaed and sold online as "antiques". He just buffed the fake patina off.

Fencing weapons are blunted rapier, dagger and cut-and-thrust blades, with a high flex and a blunt or nail-head tip with a hard rubber bird hunting blunt taped over the tip. Most feders work for two handers, but specialty blades like my bastard sword here and my buddy's saber are easy to come by, as SCA fencing is the basis for a fuck ton of other groups, making a big market.

NOTE: not just any blunt blade can work. It has to pass a flex test.

I swear by the CAS/Hanwei blunted practical rapier blades for basic blades to build my own pieces off of. Pic realted.

Bated spring steel blunts. Not all of them work for the SCA, but most will. I know Darkwood's blades work (and their hilts ain't bad either), and Hanwei's 37-in rapier blades make for damn nice sideswords (their longer blades get noodly in the bind). If you have the cash and are willing to wait, Marco Danelli makes some damn nice weapons of the proper order. As Gropey said, the SCA is probably the single largest driving force behind historical arms and armor recreation, so just about anything marketed as a practice weapon will work.
The only real outliers I can think of are actual stiff blunted swords like the hanwei/tinker blunt or most of Albion's maestro line. Shit's too stiff for SCA fencing, or full force fencing in general.

As always, it depends on where you are and the weapon that you actually have in hand.

Read the greetext a few times. "inspired" or not, its literally against one of the core tenants of the SCA, which is to make a reasonable attempt at portraying a pre 17thC person.

You can document hoods in the Renaissance, because "Renaissance" covers almost 300 years, a most of a continent, dozens of countries and hundreds of cultures and fashions. Narrow down a country and century, and i'll find you some documenation for a hood.

that's even fucking worse. The entire point of SCA is to re-enact a character from those times. Fucking up something so integral to the reenactment such as clothes is just a spit in the face to everybody who sinks time into their costumes, even if they look "less good" than you. Hell, I'd take a guy who'll make a basic tunic out of broadcloth and call it a day over your overly-designed faggotry. I'll take the guy who's in pickle-barrel armor, even, because at least he admits he just doesn't care. but you and your stupid cinema-styled clothing says "i think that my opinion and taste is worth more than everyone's immersion and fun at this event, so I'll just put my own spin on clothes and thereby ruin the whole historical aspect of this historical re-enactment group" and that's dumb as shit. I'll tell you to temper this on three scales:

* Is the guy newish and covering his shame with a tabard? Then I fully support it as long as he aims to improve his kit

*Is the guy a long time fighter but just doesn't care? Yeah, I totally agree, he's at least honest, but still missing the point.

*Is he a fighter buying specially designed impact grade polymer plastic to cut as much weight from his kit to gain advantage over people in real armour? This is unforgivable faggotry.

Still you need to reel that back in a bit. We require an attempt that looks reasonable to the uneducated, not counted stitches.

People who are agressive are the easier to train because once you beat them they start listening to what you can show them.

Agressivness and risk taking is a thing hard to develop even if you have a lot of technique.

I remember i was at a party and that girl started talking to me and we talked about armors because we were standing near my friend's armor, and i went ''Yeah if you ever feel like it i'll let you wear mine'' she said...''Okay , when?''

The morning after she was at a training and i put my armor on her and she fougth against the lion's order without an ounce of fear and listening to all our suggestion ,we all went ... this one...she's gonna make a really good line figther.

You will if you ever come to bico.
As soon as i have a spear in my hand i'm a terror.

but this year i wanna chill out and use a bow or a crossbow for the skirmishes and probably just be Templar mode during the great battle.

Also i discovered that i'm a good shooter.
wich makes the Longbow a joy to use.

Dat feel when you hit an armored opponent in the ''soft'' and they look at you all ''AWN NAW!'' and you're like...''Yep''

Ok... Time to knitpick like a motherfucker.

That hood wont work. You would lose the ability to move your head in any meaningful way. the hood should be modular to the body.

The taper as you show to the body is really jarringly post period. 16thC clothing has a defined line between the waist (which will actually be at your navel the true waist) and the skirting.

What the hell is with the backstrapping? Thats way out of place, and if you're going to make this, why wouldnt you make it fit in the first place?

"Able to retact sleeves"? Do you mean rolling up your under shirt sleeves? Because rolling up your sleeves is what you do.

No, codpieces as you think of them were never required, just fashionable in the 16thC.

>>8306445
Thanks for the nitpicking, it's good to tell me before i make a huge mistake.

the hood I thought would be out of a flexible material, and having the head poking out of the hole would essentially give me what I need to look around and whatnot. Or does that not work? never done any costuming, so i wouldn't know.

Taper? I don't understand that one. is it how I built it to be close to the body?

Removing backstrapping.

Rolling up sleeves, that's the word. And yes, but is it alright to have a doublet that only goes to elbows?

Thank heavens for no codpiece.

And is the sash/the way i want to do high boots alright?

thanks again for your help.

By anchoring it to the doublet, you are creating limits in the movement, that produce necessary stress points. Even stretchy fabric will wear and tear. Also: It doesn't exist in history

The taper refers to the cut and profile of the doublet. Yours is obviously modern. Pic related.

Yes, elbow length sleeves existed. Popular in Italy.

The sash is really a much later fashion. Like, a late 17th, early 18thC fashion.

Cant tell about the boots.

>> No.8306596

>>8306544
Okay, that makes sense. I'll create the gap at the bottom of the doublet.

thanks on the elbow sleeves.

Perhaps I could justify slash as a carryover from ottoman/middle eastern fashion at the time? Venice did have plenty of interaction with them, after all. or is that too much of a stretch?

As for the hood. that's true. I was hoping to justify it as a necessary anachronism I used simply because SCA rapier needs back of head protection, but that's probably gaming the rules too much, like using impact grade polymer plastic for armor.

>> No.8306616

>>8306596
But you still are not answering why you would you attach the hood to your doublet though. NO ONE attatches the hood to their doublet. You're making no sense. Just wear your hood over or under your mask.

By gaming the rules, I meant using the requirement of a hood to justify the presence of an attached hood that has no parallel in history to an outfit. Why I decided that attaching it was a good idea, i don't know. probably because i thought it would be super neat to have.

and I have at a few practices, but it was all practice stuff. I only just went to my first event a week ago, and it was there i discovered my disdain of exceptionally baggy clothes.

>the hood I thought would be out of a flexible material
No such fabric exists that would work in that would flow correctly for that, any period fabric will have minimal stretchiness. Hoods aren't anchored, or (like in modern sweatshirts) they have a smaller neck hole which would allow for movement. If you're trying to go for a hooded capelet with a... weird shoulder fitted cape with buttons that can attach to a doublet, seamstress-wise that's doable. The problem is that as soon as you move around or raise your arms especially for combat the whole thing will rumple and shift, tangling and possibly blinding you.

Your whole design looks very Assassin's Creed to me. Is that possibly where you got the idea from?

>Your whole design looks very Assassin's Creed to me. Is that possibly where you got the idea from?

Yes. Observe my initial sketch.

No, kidding. For the hood, yeah, it came from looking at those cgi renderings of axeman in the AC: Unity trailers. the doublet is based off of a piece from Museo Stibbert in Florence, with slashes between the panels because i really like vertical slashes. the red sash is definitely a tip-off to an AC influence, but there's a funny story behind that-after my first event we went to the house of one of the old scaers who was a bit under the weather. We talked for a bit, the guy had plenty of weapons around his house, and decided to give me a janbiyah, a middle-eastern knife commonly worn in a sash around the waist, which i decided to incorporate into my outfit because that was a super cool thing for him to do. The whole knee high boots thing is more based off the fact I don't like calf tights. And elbow length sleeves because I tend to roll up my jackets to the elbow.

So, there's some influence, for sure, but I wasn't trying to go LOOKATMEIMANASSASSINFROMASSASSINSCREEDTHEVIDEOGAMEGIVEMEATTENTION

but rather, using some cool ideas from a series I happened to like.

That's a still fuck-up, isn't it?

First of all, I love the Assassin's Creed outfit designs- they're gorgeous and brilliantly designed.

That being said, they are not historically accurate and you'll look like an autist if you wear something like it to a LARP, and they are so immediately recognizable even when it's just an inspiration.

Don't do it anon, step back from that ledge.

>> No.8308151

I disagree. If you do it right with proper fabrics they can be cool. And if it's really cool then nobody gives a fuck where is from the inspiration

If it's *very* loosely inspired, I agree. I have an item of garb that I love, loosely inspired by AC.

But some newb walks into a larp stalking around looking like Ezio (and anon's design screams Assassin's Creed to me rather than just loosely inspired)? I'm going to automatically assume he's at least a little autistic, or doesn't understand exactly how the game works. It would be the same thing (to me) as seeing someone playing a halfling named Filbo Faggins.

I also certainly feel that it's not appropriate for SCA.

That may be true, but I rather like the persona I have in mind, and a doublet is pretty much essential for an early renaissance venetian male. And because of this guy here, I'm keeping the sash. Probably not red, but perhaps brown so the overall thing has a colour scheme of blue/tan (and has less of an AC influence). For a venetian persona to have a middle eastern knife fits, what with them being a huge trade center in the mediterranean.

I'll lose the hood, though.
