They have a different approach to cosplay than we do. Ryoko Demon is one of the few I know who mostly makes her own costumes but they have no qualms with getting help. That really good Trinity Blood Queen outfit that gets posted around was made by like six people for example. One did the sewing, one did the beadwork, one did the propwork, one did the wig, etc.

Whereas Americans are all about making everything yourself. To the point that people will lie about having made shit they commissioned.

Russians and Asians share a similar mindset: Do your best and be good or don't bother at all.

In the west there is more of a liberal "Just do whatever you feel!" mentality, which makes for mostly terrible cosplays and people ignoring their own limitations.

Something about making sweeping generalizations can make anything look good or bad.

Part of me feels that there seem to be a large amount of great Russian cosplayers because those that we're seeing are the ones who were actually good enough to have their images leave the country en masse. I'm sure Russia is totally full of awful cosplayers as well, but we don't see them because of how much Russia is culturally isolated from other countries, especially those as far as the US.

I remember a thread were people talked how hot most Russians girls seem to be and someone said that they have THE NEEED to be like that otherwise they won't get a man.
I think they have some social pressure to be perfect and that applies to cosplay as well?

Cultural differences and that Americans are often content with putting in the tiniest if effort no matter the subject. Plus, if you've been to the largely populated areas of Russia you'll notice that a lot of the time, most Russians dress to look their best at all times, even if just going to a corner store. I'm not really sure why they do this but even the ones who are poorer than most do this as well. I expect that Cosplay is no different.

Also, they're prettier and not as fat.

Offer to do [skill you're good at] for your friend if she'll do [thing she's good at] for you, once two people are trading everyone else will get in on that deal. that's what I noticed too. I'm not from Russia (but we are 'affectionately' called "Mini Russia") and most people here do their cosplays in teams. We have a workshop and help each other out, because that way the resources are still cheaper. In the US people get so huffy if someone gets help from someone but here everyone helps everyone. You wouldn't get that kind of reaction.

6. The photographers are catty but the same rules apply to them that apply to cosplayers too, everyone wants to be the best.
7. It's easier to hire a pro-seamstress who will sew you a great and clean cosplay.

It applies mostly to women because I think there's a huge difference in the number of women and men so women are in big competition to get husbands. That's why mail order brides are a thing. Watched a documentary about Phil Rosenthal going ot Russia to help adapt Everybody Loves Raymond and they had the wife character wearing an evening gown while working around the house because a wife needs to look her best at all times. A shmuck I know got a mail order wife from Russia and she always wears stupid nice clothes and wears silk pajamas to bed.

This would be fun to do for competitions. Especially in a group where everyone is really good in a specific skill set, but might be lacking in others. I also feel like in the US, it's a lot about challenging yourself and learning new skillsets, especially for those who take cosplay a little more seriously than just throwing together something that vaguely resembles the character. Commissioning has always been frowned upon in some facet. While you may look great in the costume, and pay for great photography in the end you are paying for something you didn't create and I feel like for many people it's not considered "as good". But yet perfectly acceptable or preferred in some circles.

I buy my costumes. A lot of the time I have to alter them, but I still don't credit myself for the whole outfit though. I let people know what I have altered. I hate the elitist idea that if you don't make it 100% yourself then you are not a 'real cosplayer'. Bitch please. We are all dressing up. Doesn't matter if it is handmade or store bought. I can't sew very well. I don't have a machine that ends up with clean edges because I don't have a serger. I don't know how to trap in edges properly with a zigzag stitch, but hot damn. I'm Russian, and I think the good result which you see comes to life with help of social pressure and specific mindset. Ugly or fat people just dont try cosplaying, because they know this hobby emphasize their not perfect appearance, they simply dont want to be judged or to be seen in a bad light. No one is going to asspat your work if it is not good. Yeah, from what I know, americans are much more friendly and generally less care about doing what they want, if it makes them happy, but here it is not like that.
