American who attends Canadian Cons in the room, I'm just curious, why do the Ontario communities seem so dramafilled? Like in my area of the states, there's drama but they're often secluded to certain groups, not a whole city or region. Or I may be over analyzing this.

It depends on what you really want. I'll talk about what it has to offer based on the last time I went.

APop is more of a party/rave con, so if you're into parties and raves, great. It does have stuff to offer other people too, for one, it's at the science centre so you can check out science stuff. It also still has panels, artist alley, dealer's room, game room, stuff a typical con would have. And, it has outdoor stuff like a bounce castle. I'd say most of the programming is geared towards the night though. And, if you were to go during the day, remember that you'd share the venue with the public so people get crammed into one corner of the centre (which admittedly wasn't great, considering how cramped the dealer's "room" was). I also remember there being an area for people to craft stuff and every hour they'd teach how to make something new. So I think APop has at least enough to offer for anyone to enjoy, although the price is still going to be a bit high, likely due to it being at the science centre and all.

Basically, if you don't like carnival/party atmospheres, APop definitely isn't for you. It's less like a conventional...well, convention, and more like a carnival/party con. I'm not too much of a party-goer but I still loved APop last year and picked going to it this year over AN (I would've wanted to go to both since I've been going to AN since 2008, but limited funds + friends coming in from the states to go to APop)

Voldie is one of those people that really, even if she was nice to the people in the comm for real, no one will ever trust her. Enough people know the shit she has done in the past, and she hasnt shown that she is a different person from back then. Once you attack people in your area, you risk the chance that their friends will be people you have to deal with. She fucked up in that respect.

Let's cool it with the saltiness. Be nice we're Canadian eh

>>8295015
It's my favorite con in the GTA area.

>Great venue, which included in your ticket price you get full access to the Science Center which is awesome.
>Fun, carnival-like aspect, with attractions like jousting and a bouncy castle
>Fun programming like Dick or No Dick, Ramen Eating Contests, a Lightsaber battle, Nerf gun fight, Cosplay Dodgeball, Kigurumi Fight Club, "Pokemon Snap" contest, A real life Dragonball hunt... the list goes on.
>Tons of free crafting workshops, like making buttons and plushies
>The Nerdy Burlesque is always a draw and a really fun show
>Several raves and dances
>Cool performances like fire shows and circus acts
>Prozzak is performing

The biggest draw for me is that its programming is quirky and interactive, unlike at other cons. At Anime North, no panels really ever interest me. At APOP, I'm scheduled back-to-back. There's something to do for everybody.

The only downside of this is that it's not so much a "cosplay" con. Because of all the interactive programming, people opt out of wearing large or uncomfortable cosplays and go for casual versions or kigurumis instead. But all in all, 10/10 would recommend.

Selling points of the con are:
Big dance parties, room parties, caters toward the "90s kid" crowd, lots of crafts, lots of random events/panels, burlesque and circus acts, getting to see the science centre but also doing other things. IMO it is a great con for hanging out with friends or making new friends.

That said, there is a drug/drinking scene, very rave based, not a big focus on anime/comics/specific genres. It's not like a traditional convention.

My friends are introverts and one of them doesn't like large crowds or anything really to do with big parties but they both excitedly attend apop every year because there are non-rave events and it's still fairly small in size.

I've only had the omurice and onigiri, and those were alright. Convention food is, as usual, overpriced for its quality though.

That's a shame. I've been having a hard time finding quality sushi. Those.. Sushi chains.. are so gross.

Yeah, they are. Sometimes they come up with innovative things that I like to taste because I'm a masochist though, lol. I would love to help you with restaurant suggestions, but I prefer the don and raw fish plates more than rolls so... Maybe try boul. St-Laurent? I saw a few authentic looking places down there.

For rolls I loved the nigiri - so far the nicest place I found was called Hasu. For actual Chinese I enjoyed Mr Spicy down here.

Sushi's a craft food. Why do people think chains are a good idea for that?

There's a really nice place I know of in Laval
It's in Quartier Laval, right next to Metro Montmorency
I think it's between a Subway and a Thai express

You can get all you can eat for $15 at lunch and $30 at dinner (it includes soup and some chicken)
Best part is that it's pretty fucking good

I feel like we need a site that foodmaps areas around conventions.

Projects, projects.

or just fucking use a map centered around the con center or hotel location like everyone else.

Sure, but the point is to make it specifically easier to find food and have recommended joints. Kind of like how BlogTO works or similar.

Chill, anon.

I think that would be an awesome idea; I have also seen this supplied by other conventions (mostly in the states). It's a shame AN doesn't do one.

We've done a physical area map for food at CB! for a couple of years now, but I'd love to have a digital option. Gonna look into this.

>> No.8307998

Is anyone coming to AN from the states?
I really need a few accessories for my phone (a cable and a charging bank) that's only available on the US shop.
Shipping to you is 3-7 days.
I can pay you the appropriate amount via paypal or pay you with cash at AN. I can also just pay online to the shop by myself and ship to your address but this kind of requires a lot of trust on my part so...
Can also pay you an extra shopping service fee.

Thanks!

I wish I was so you could pay me in delicious truffles.

Also - if we can't make it to the meet up - will you be handing out truffles during the con? (similar to the picnic) Also do you have a recipe you use, or is it a secret?

My phone is batshit retarded lol (OnePlus).
It has compatibility issues with all the USB cables I've tried with it (doesn't charge at all), and my old portable charger doesn't work on it either. So I mean, if I'm going to spend money, I'd rather just spend more and go through more effort than risk it not working.

Look into opening a CBI address if you go to Niagara Falls/Buffalo often enough. I have an address, but I don't know when I'll be heading down to pick things up for the next while.
