Last thread is close to 300. Has anyone seen this tacky chick on tumblr that made a Twinkle Carnival replica with a Bodyline dress? Oh my god. Like if you're going to screen print something, why not an original design? She even has "Angelic Pretty" on it wtf.

do people just bid and then go to sleep or what?

i also hate when you've completed a sale, and let the other person know that you've left them feedback but they never reply. OR they say they'll leave you feedback too and never do. what's with that ugh

I thought this was creative and she did a great job. Making it an AP replica to the point of adding the logo struck me as odd though. With skills like that, to me at least, it would have made more sense to make an 'inspired by' piece perhaps even using similar royalty free artwork etc - some vintage artwork is stunning and intricate, dare I say even more beautiful too.

She seems happy though, it's not she's trying to profit from it.

Not really sure where to post this, so I suppose here is a good place.

I recently bought a dress that I intended for normal wear, but as a joke I put an old petti that I had lying around and it actually looked pretty alright.

I looks like it's homemade as there are no tags, but the stitching looks pretty sound.

Question is, is it an acceptable dress for lolita? I've attached a pic with the dress and the direction of the coord that I think would be alright.

All criticism and advice is welcomed warmly.

>> No.8286358

the shape does not look right to me - combination of length and lack of poof. this might be an aesthetic issue rather than a hard and fast rule, but to me it looks more vintage/retro than lolita because of it.

>>8286352
To be honest I'm not sure I like the dress. The neckline looks a bit weird, and the straps aren't very good. The shape of the skirt also strikes me as a bit square-dancy. Maybe if you altered it, it'd be nice. Like, adding new straps would make it better. Also, your planned coord is lovely, but I don't like the bag (lace looks like it might be a bit cheap?) or the apron.

>> No.8286364

>>8286352
Hmm. That's rather debatable anon. Definitely not in it's current state, you need to ditch those sad strips of ribbon and wear it as a sleeveless or make some more suitable straps. Or, I just had a thought, add some lace on the bottom, chop off the top (maybe even use the fabric for a bow) and make it into a skirt? That could be really cute. That petticoat is not the right shape though, I think it would look very flattering with a bell-shape. You're going in the right direction with your accessories though, this has a lot of potential!

>> No.8286368

>>8286352
I think it could work but I'd recommend a large bow or jabot, else the upper torso might look a bit empty. The bag is pretty ugly - mostly due to the lace. I'd also recommend getting a bag and hat that match in shade. The ribbon you have shown will also probably look too shiny - look for something more matte.

The daisies are cute but I wouldn't omit adding more cherry notes. You could easily skip the necklace and maybe find some hair clips that are cherry themed.

The petticoat does look a bit odd, you might want something more bell-shaped. You could try wearing it inside-out or wear it lower so it would at least reach closer to the bottom of your skirt. An underskirt might also help.

Thank you! I sew a small amount, and this may be doable for my level of knowledge.
I'm having a hard time figuring out what to do with the torso though, as the top area is 4 different pieces of fabric. The back has a zipper that goes down to the tailbone, and the skirt portion is also 4 panels of fabric. I've outlined the seams of the front portion at the breasts. If I take out the elastic I'm not really sure how to get it looking nice rather than a baggy mess.

I have a question:

When shipping out a dress, do you usually declare it as a gift even if the buyer doesn't request it? I just received a package and was hit with a 50 dollar customs fee because the seller declared it as a gift valuing at 250. If she was going to do this, shouldn't she have wrote a value under 50 dollars? Just seems like a stupid mistake that I have to pay for. Also, what is the likelihood of being reimbursed? I filled out the forms saying customs made a mistake, I'm about to mail it out, but I highly doubt I'm going to see my money again.

You can shape it by making about a million darts across the top, each one about 1 inch wide.

Alternatively, you could try sewing a few rows of lace across it, hopefully you end up with an effect similar to this jsk. I'd tack the lace down to try and see if it works before sewing it down.

You can sew little ribbon loops on the inside of the dress and replace the shoulder strap with clear bra straps, the current one isn't really working out.

I second this question, and want to add: what are the implications of listing as a gift as far as package insurance goes? Are you just SOL if your "gift" Moitie gate print or whatever gets lost over the Atlantic?

>> No.8287529

>> No.8287538

>>8287512

I can sort of see the logic, a lot of buyers used to request marking an item as gift because for their country gift items escape customs. It's only recently that I've heard gift items are now being taxed higher than non gift items. So some sellers might just do it out of habit thinking they're doing something good for their buyer.

As for the high value, it's the scenario >>8287522 mentions. If it does get lost over the Atlantic, then you can claim back the full $250 (or however much your shipping insurance covers). If she had marked it at $50, then she can only claim back $50. It's really not in seller's interests to mark down packages, because buyers will file paypal disputes for the full amount regardless, what seller wants to lose $200 just because you wanted a chance to escape a $50 customs fee?

Next time you buy, sort things out with your seller before she sends the parcel out. Try and remember that if you're dealing with international sellers, they don't know the ins and outs of your country's customs laws, especially such a weird one as taxing gift packages higher than normal.

Not all sellers understand what is up with customs because some countries barely get hit with customs. I am in the US and never once got a custom fee, but a few times when I shipped my buyer got hit with them which I felt really bad about.

If you are outside the US, I think your responsibility to ask about marking down price because sellers may not know what will happen to your country.

Also, it is technically illegal to mark down the value, so some sellers don't want to break the law. If the payment is sent as a gift, I would be more comfortable declaring the value as low, but otherwise it's kinda just tough cookies.

Marking as a gift is fine (at least for Europe), though illegal, until it's
A) over £40 and they start charging VAT (I think this is relatively new?)
B) over £120 where they start charging duty
(May be slightly different depending on country)
A good way to avoid/get lower tax is to mark it as 'used' or '2nd hand' (I don't remember which term they use on customs decleration slips), because used items (particularly clothing) are taxed at a far lower rate. And, at least in this case, it's the truth

>> No.8288097

The issue is not that. No seller is going to remember all this unless they also live in Europe. Heck, unless a European regularly buys things from overseas, even they aren't going to remember all these rules. There's no way any seller can remember all the effing customs rule for every single country/trading bloc on the entire planet.

When you buy internationally, work things out with the seller before they ship it. Don't cry about it after if you didn't bother to work it out.

This is a stupid question I'm sure, please don't chew my ass out for it, but I want to leave Lolita soon. I'm going to stop following communities and checking brand websites, looking for coord pictures, etc. However, I don't want to get rid of my clothes. I plan to continue wearing them mixed in with my regular clothing and coordinated like regular clothing, and maybe occasionally wearing them the way they were originally intended in an obviously Lolita looking coord, but I have no plants to buy more Lolita clothes. I'm just not interested in the fashion anymore as a whole, but still love the clothes I already own and would hate to get rid of them just because I no longer feel interested in the fashion.
Does that mean I'm not actually leaving Lolita if I continue to wear the clothes, especially if I wear then coordinated into an obviously lolita outfit once in a while?

Ditch the dress straps. Maybe attach red cross ties.
If you can do alterations/sewing or have money for a tailor or whatever, cut some length off the bottom of the skirt and attach tulle/ruffles there instead. Depends what you're into, but the bottom of the dress is slightly too long for in my opinion. You could even just make it a bit shorter and then attach some lace trim.
Apron, MAYBE. Sometimes you can pull it off, other times nah.

Because "barely used' means something different to everyone so wearing something 1-3 times gives people a much clear picture of how used a dress is. Also, some people prefer to buy things used by famous people so they can feel like they are hugging that famous person whenever they wear that dress.

I felt bad for milkyfawn. Don't mean to start a debate or anything here so I hope I don't derail the thread, but after seeing that I definitely could see she supposedly had left due to not being comfortable with her online presence anymore. The bodice is tight and boned, but they cheaped out on construction. Fabric that lightweight needs to be underlined for a fitted, structured bodice like that or it looks like wrinkly, wonky crap. So it looks like crap. Though correct construction wouldn't do anything about the tacky print design or awkward style.

And where the hell are you supposed to put your tits in the high waist version? This cut literally wouldn't fit an A cup. That waist is nipple-height.

Hide the stitches in the folds. Make a bow from ribbon as normal. Note that the bow part is a loop, not just a rectangle. This is important as it's where your needle will come in and out of.

Then, fold back the first part of the tail. Where the edge of the bow is, make a holding stitch that holds the folded-back tail in place, it goes through the lower layer of the bow, but it does not pierce the upper layer of the bow. It's fiddly to do, open up the loop of the bow and you can reach it fairly easily.

Then, fold the tail outwards again, and make a second holding stitch, hide this stitch in the fold-back part that you made earlier. Does that make sense?

Then presss it, or put something heavy on it, so that the folds become more prominent.

Use fairly stiff ribbon, don't use floppy chiffon or gauze. I made something similar out of interfaced quilting cotton that I attached to a headband, but it was pretty stiff on its own before being attached, and didn't need to be wired.

It's more like you need to be in it for the long haul -- brands release items every year, and every year they vary their colours, sometimes a little, sometimes a lot. So you could put in a lot of work classifying items up until now, and then next year it'll be outdated already. Even lolibrary is lacking lackeys to keep it consistently updated -- some of the plainer btssb and aatp items don't make it to the database, which means you may end up having to do a lot of modding yourself instead of relying on volunteers. Definitely don't start it if you think you'll be leaving lolita next year or going through life-changing situations.

That said, I could see it as being very useful. Even just a database that consists of nothing but photos showing same colour items from different releases side by side (eg a photo of IW's ivory blouse with a photo of AP's ivory bag), searchable by release name, colour and brand name, would be really useful. Maybe it can just be a tumblr that accepts submissions, and each item is tagged with the release name, colour, brand? Not the most advanced classification out there, but quite easily maintained.

That's not a matter of lolitas liking rectangle cuts, it's easier for the manufacturers (yes, the burandos) to print the border print as one long continuous print along the edge of a roll of fabric. Then it's easy to use the same roll of fabric to make different jsk and OP styles, the skirt is always a rectangle cut from the border side, and the skirt length can be freely varied without worrying about making a flared circle accidentally too tight or too flared.

The one you linked is embroidered instead of having a border print. I rather wish they would bring those embroidered ones back, but we seem to be in the middle of a heavy print fad, so I guess for now, we're kind of stuck with either rectangle skirts or tiered skirts (which uses tiers to create the flare shape that you say you like, but the trade-off is that there is a seam running through the middle of the skirt).

I hope you stay at a place that has an AC. And a dryer. And even with the dryer, getting your clothes dry is not 100% guaranteed. I don't recommend going in lolita, one because you'll be freaked out about prints running, and two because if you sweat, the high humidity is going to make it very uncomfortable.

At least you'll have fewer tourists to contend with, precisely because the long rains can be awfully depressing. And many temples and shrines will look really nice in rain.
