Man Sailor Moon cosplay has come a long way. Back in the late 90s seeing a GOOD sailor moon cosplay was rare as a unicorn.

Fast forward some 17-18 years later and seeing good ones it's par the course. People still fuck it up yeah but most of the time it's not a total trainwreck.

The thing I get confused about is how people are STILL screwing up the bangs.
So many people just leave them flat against their forehead. NONE of the art looks like that. How hard is it to curl them under and fluff them a little.

Honestly I think Jupiter is worse than Serenity here. She definitely didn't know what she was doing on the sleeves, the whole thing is far plainer than anything Sakizo related should be, and the exposed petti looks so bad. Serenity's corset is actually a pretty design, and I like what she was *trying* to do, but both of them need to know more about pattern drafting, picking quality materials, and detail work.

It was Kami-Con about 2 years ago. She posted here plans in the facebook event page and a staffer kindly told her to bring something to cover up in case she got asked to change. Her and her husband threw a bitch fit about it and spread rumors that Sailor Moon costumes wouldn't be allowed. It got to the point where the con chairs had to step in a resolve the issue. Last I heard, she has vowed never to go to the con again.

Shiny satin is the bane of SM cosplays, and I have been following the scene for a good decade.

In none of the materials, manga or otherwise is the fabric shiny enough to be satin. I am not really sure why people assume it is. You only need to look at PGSM to see the fabric matte-ness Takeuchi envisioned.

Hell even in Seramyu the costumes are only occasionally shiny, when it would be more than acceptable considering its a theatrical stage adaptation.

Satin also has a terrible drape and stiffness that do not do the pleats justice.

Some Tips:
The chest thing is actually a thin armor plate that goes over the fabric of the leotard. Most people make it out of fabric or omit it but having it distinctive is a nice touch.

The skirt is usually the hardest part of an SM cosplay to get right and the first thing people like to criticize (along with the bow). My advice is LESS pleats are better than too many. Go with a BOX pleat that tapers more narrowly at the base and sort of fans out a bit. With the right stiffness of fabric you can get a nice anime-like rigidity and profile. Making the skirt long to cover your ass and thighs just looks dumpy and probably means you should pick a different cosplay. You *should* have a leotard bottom that hides more than a bather suit would, as well as SHEER TIGHTS to make your legs look like butter and really complete the look. The highest heel on the shoes that you can feel comfortable in will give your overall legs and stature the boost it needs to stand up the longest legged characters to come out of Japan.

I also suggest you learn the difference between "shiny satin" and the low-luster satin that is the standard for most manga/ruffle style SM uniforms. Not all satin looks like shit and various types have beautiful drape.

Oh, and box pleats? NOPE. One should use a single box pleat in the center front and knife pleats on either side, then one more in the center of the back (possibly inverted, based on preference).

The design is busy. Not like busy but thought out, it's just a lot of stuff in one place which looks alright on paper.

Alright. Risking a self-post. I want to redo the dress and the cape, and maybe embellish it more next time. Keeping the cape on my shoulders was a pain in the neck, so I need to make the "cups" deeper, and probably use a heavier interfacing/interlining.

There's different ways to wear a headscarf, depending on what your specific beliefs about Islam are. That's why some girls can show their faces and others can't even show their eyes.

I would definitely deepen the V in the center front so it captures Nehelenia's sexy design. Also, although you managed to make it very flattering, I would recommend going for the full-on empire waist look and use gathered fabric under the bust so that it has the more historically inspired silhouette. Yes, you will lose your waist, but it'll be worth it for the more beautiful drape and volume. Although using a chiffon is a fabulous choice of fabric, I don't think it's actually supposed to be sheer, so you might want to consider something more opaque. Sheer yellow over black ends up looking really dull.

Her notes indicate that it wasn't supposed to be sheer, but that she "liked the idea". A lot of Takeuchi's notes are ... weird, so I didn't follow them as closely as I probably should have.

She chose organza for all of Black Lady's sheer pieces, for example. Which tends to look horrible in execution.

For the redo, I'm going to definitely fix the neckline. I built a corselet into the dress to hold it up, but it didn't do a great job of creating cleavage, so I'm going to practice that more before the final draft of the redo.

I think for the black portion, I'll stick with a fitted silhouette, but definitely gather the overlay fabric for a more dramatic amount of volume. The chiffon looked good in motion, but not so much in still photographs.

Honestly, I'm the most proud of the sleeves, though I want to find a better way to keep them up next time. They looked great and had epic puffiness, but slid down anytime I started walking around/moving.

We chose a glitter PVC for the skirt, because in many of the references the top skirt has a shimmering wet look to it, (I should have starched it to keep the pleat shape, oops). The under skirt fabric was chosen solely for the glitter, which only after the con photos emerged did we realise it didn't actually show up at all.
So 100% the underskirt looks terrible and I'm hunting for a better replacement fabric.
Ha, funny thing about the bodice is, my invisible zipper broke that day as I was putting Myu on, I ended up having to safety pin myself into the costume which is the cause for the ill fitting bodice.

From the look of these, and more obviously in the second photo, she's using her real hair for the bangs and then putting it up in bun/bunchies. The extensions are then wrapped around her real hair and left to trail.

I do something similar when I cosplay Sailor Jupiter. The ponytail is fake and clips onto the small excuse for a ponytail my real hair can muster and just side sweep style my bangs and curl the sides.

Be careful with Arda wigs. They tangle pretty bad when they are hanging loose. One of my friends who is a much better ocsplayer than me claims she just hairsprays the fuck out of loose arda wigs and it's fine but I haven't tried it. As for hte color it depends on your skintone. If you're brown/darker then mirkwood but olive if you're white/pale.

Mirkwood is nearly black but gorgeous in the sunlight whereas Dark Green will look decently green most of the time.

Agreed, I'd go with Epic for this wig. I prefer them for long, sleek styles like Pluto's since they don't tangle so bad.

If this is your first long wig, you may want to keep it on the shorter side, like maybe hipbone length for Pluto. Long wigs are a bitch.
