I really like how the Galaxy seifukus have skirts with small spots of shirring on the side. It makes moving so much easier and makes it more possible to sell a costume when the waist has some wiggle room.

How can I recreate this when making my own seifuku? If I had peices of pre shirred fabric. I'd be worried itd cause ruffling?

I don't know where else to ask this, so here I go:
I'm want to sell a kigurumi I made for myself and wore for half a day at a con. I sell kigus to others but I have no idea how to price a used item I made. Materials cost around $70, and it's a fairly complex design. If it was a commission it would easily be over $200.
Not trying to advertise, just trying to ask for opinions!! So no I won't give out my info, comms are closed, ect.

What to do about this cape guys? Looks like I'd need to custom print double-sided fabric, which sounds really ridiculously expensive... any alternatives to that? I accept that I'll probably have to custom print the lense-flare-ey inside fabric. But how can I attach that inside fabric to the outside fabric without making it too bulky and interfering with the flow of the cape?

You could try putting elastic only around the bottom, and leaving the top with just a band? That way the bulky awkward looking part stays mostly hidden in your armpits.

Beyond that, pinning the ruffle to the bottom of the shirt and/or fashion tape maybe?

Sell it for $100-150 because it's technically 'used.' If you never wore it you could sell it for $200+ easy but since it's been wore people are leery.

If you want to lowball sell it for $80

I don't think you should price it as your would for a commission since it won't be made for the person buying it or to their preference. Since you want to at least get your moneys worth I'd say more than $70 but less than $150? It also depends on what the kigu is of/how popular its source is.

The amount of money you put into it should not matter at all to the buyer. It's a used piece of clothing and possibly full of your dander, some people may not even want it for more than $20.
That said, sell it for an amount you're comfortable with. If $70 is the absolute minimum you're willing to part it with, don't lowball yourself and sell for less than that.

Bored at work so I'm going to try and break this down as much as I can. I have no knowledge of this character or series, so I'm just going off what I see in this picture.

Break it down into very simple pieces. First decide: how much time/money do you want to put into this? When is the con? Can you sew/build props? Do you have time to experiment and make mistakes? Is the con soon and will you have to commission pieces? Set a rough timeline and budget for yourself (its okay if this changes over time, it usually does.)

Once you've decided on a timeline/budget, look at the pieces that this cosplay is composed of. Starting from the top, I see an orange fro, facial scars, armor (shoulder), belts/harness, green necklace, long sleeve orange shirt, white long sleeve undershirt, some kind of bangle, bracer, chaps or leg armor, brown/grey pants, plus a metal belt with scabbard and sword.

Now is the time to decide what items are ESSENTIAL and what can you ditch. Are all the props necessary to know who the character is? Do some objects hold more significance than others? If there are things which aren't essential, save them for last. That way, if you run out of time, you'll still be recognizable.

Now start from simple and go to hard. You can probably find a suitable long sleeved orange and white shirt online (I found this: http://cheer.epicsports.com/prod/34006/baw-mens-long-sleeve-eco-cool-tek-polo-shirts.html?gclid=CMGawJC7_sQCFZGTfgodRKIATA without too much trouble, but obviously you can look to find exactly what you want). The pants look fairly non-descript, I’d probably try and find a nice fitting pair of khaki or grey jeans that look close. Don’t find anything you like? Time to pull out the sewing machine and start looking for patterns. (cntd)

Armor is a fairly common and fairly well documented cosplay prop. Take a look at some tutorials, and find one that you think you can handle. This isn’t your character, but it’s a fairly simple tutorial on how to do shoulder armor (http://roxyroo.deviantart.com/art/Shoulder-Armor-Tutorial-121481183 ). This one (https://cosplaybrain.wordpress.com/2013/09/13/adding-straps-to-worbla-armor-tutorial/)) looks like it will be helpful for the cross body harness. I’ve got no advice for the harness itself, but it seems like if you can find two or three belts of the same style and color, you can probably cannibalize them to make it. Here’s a tutorial on bracers (http://www.thefoamcave.com/tutorials/How-to-make-gauntlets-arm-guards).). If you don’t think you can handle it, there are people who you can commission armor from, but it gets pricey fast. I can’t recommend anyone because I’m not really into armor, but they exist.
Those circle belts are pretty common, I’d keep an eye out at thrift stores or online for one that looks right (I found this one a quick search: http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/131483284763?lpid=82&chn=ps).). The biggest thing with this belt is that it will have to keep the sword up, so you need it to be a little more substantial. If you can’t find the right belt, then you’ll have to make the sword very light. This picture doesn’t have a great view of the sword, so I’ll simply direct you to this (http://cosplaytutorial.com/list.php#PropsWeaponsSwordsandKnives).). You can explore different ways to make the sword that works for your character.
The necklace and bracer should be pretty easy to do yourself, you can find lots of jewelry making tutorials online. Again, if you can’t do it, find someone to commission, sooner rather than later.
I also have no idea what the chaps/leg armor is, so I’ll leave you to figure out what its supposed to be.

The facial scarring you can do one of several ways. You can grab a lip liner or brown eye liner and just draw the scar, which won’t give it much depth, but it will be cheap and easy. I’d recommend Mehron Rigid Collodion for a scar that looks real. Its pretty cheap, and with a little bit of make-up will look much better than just paint/make-up. It will dry and compress, leaving the skin kind of puckered looking, like a real scar.
I have no idea what to tell you about the wig. I don’t know of places that sell “good” fros, and definitely none in orange. You’ll have to figure that out yourself.
Take it slow, google what you don’t understand, and if you come back here, ask specific questions. People will respond better to “how to I sand worbla” than to “how do I do everything?” Look at the tutorial database linked in the sticky, its extremely helpful for many projects. Last but not least, don’t be afraid to google “Favarro Leone cosplay” and see what comes up. See what other people have done, message people you like, learn from those you don’t. Cosplayers love talking about themselves, so ask questions about how they did stuff.
Good luck.

Rubber? That's an issue, if it's plastic it's a lot easier.

You would use what's called a wet transfer decal for best results, but it'd be rather hard. You could also try a stencil, which is easier but also easier to mess up and get the detail in.

If you had any sort of access to a laser cutter, I'd suggest cutting a pattern out of cardstock or thin plastic and using that for a stencil. That's the best way to do it.

If it's light enough (I think it would be, looks like organza or chiffon might be a decent match for the fabric), you can try thin, cased wiring attached to a support belt/structure around your hips/waist. You don't need to put too much support into it; stopping at the second or even first tier might be enough since the rest will flow behind you when you walk. Maybe you can check and see what Princess of the Crystal cosplayers have done for their costume? It's a similar Ikuhara design.

I can't find anywhere online that you can get a single enamel lapel pin design custom made, without it being in bulk.

Is there a retailer online, or maybe someone who does these custom for people? it's a very simple flat design, and I don't want to have to resort to using one of those circular plastic sealed badge pins.

Top reasons:

1. Rethread everything. Possibly a fresh bobbin too.
2. Tension. Adjust yours.
3. Old thread. Use something newer.
4. Needle is snagging or not right for the fabric. Replace it

Try each one of those in turn.

I'm making juuzou's quinque. I plan to use PVC pipe for the handle itself, and sandwiching a rigid core of some sort with sintra for the blade. My question is what should I use for the inner core of the blade part? My thoughts were either MDF (may be too heavy) or balsa wood (may be too flimsy)

>> No.8261769

>all this tokyo ghoul stuff
I don't get it. Why is it so popular?

Anyways, depending on the size, even sintra might be too heavy, and you might have to go with cardboard, foamboard, or maybe even aluminum.

As for the center pieces, I suggest creating a vague sort of framework with balsa (Which is actually pretty strong for the weight) but making the visible filler out of paper to save weight.

Even then, I can't imagine this being terribly light in any case, and you'll probably need some metal parts to support all that weight. I'd reconsider the cosplay - this is extremely ambitious and hard to pull off.

If you're rich, use styrene instead of sintra.

Hi.
I'm trying to create a sword with one area open with thin acrylic panelling, and then use some sort of LEDs in the middle of the acryllic and maybe a paper sheet to difffuse light..

I've heard, however, El wire doesn't really create a good "glow" effect.

I don't know shit about circuitry/electronics, and I've tried to solder before and have burned a hole in my leg so I have a phobia.

Is there any place I can get an LED strip with a power supply attatched? Or good, really bright lights attatched to some sort of portable power supply that I don't have to solder anything?

A strong cotton would be fine. Remember: keep away from satin and broadcloth.

It's called a bishop sleeve. You can Google patterns. Combining the part at the top with the part at the bottom might look terrible (unless you use sleeve garters).
Personally, I'd focus on getting the 'bishop' aspect more than the shoulder puff.

I've started working on Vienna from Knights in the Nightmare, and I'm pretty confused about how to get her clothes to have that conical shape that.

Someone suggested a petticoat a while ago, so I first planned on making a light brown dress, with a skirt and one or more petticoats underneath. But since the flaring starts way higher than at her waist, I'm starting to doubt my plan. There's also the fact that her sleeves look way darker than the brown of the first dress.
Would it be possible to build a kind of crinoline that starts at chest level rather than at waist level (maybe with shoulder straps to keep it in place) and transform the brown dress into a sleeveless one, and the skirt into a dress (solving the matter of the too-dark sleeves) ? And what kind of yardage would I need for these ? I bought 2 3-meter pieces of a fabric (they were on sale so I figured I could use it for something else if this project fell through) whose two sides are perfect for each color, so what isn't used for one dress can be used for the other, would that be enough or do I need to look for more ?

Make the neck a mock neck and add width to the bottom of the sleeves so that they become puffed at the cuffs. Add rounded points to the front and back of the shirt pattern. Does anyone know how I could achieve the spear-through-the-chest effect without making the spear itself quite flimsy?

My current plan is to build the shaft of the spear from lightweight perspex rods and attach those to the chest piece with screws. I'm aware that I'll need to make the chestpiece from much thicker foam than I would normally, but do you think the spear itself would hold up for the whole convention this way? I'm especially worried that someone might bump into it or pull on it and it would bend or snap in half. Is there a better material I could use? Is there some way to strengthen it?

I've got most of this figured out except the "clouds." I was thinking of ball halves around tubes of plastic canvas then white spandex or knit stretched over them and down into the crevices to become a solid cloud shape. Not sure what the best method is though. Sewing around ever ball would take forever especially while trying to keep the fabric tight. Not sure what glue would hold well as an alternative not not show through.

I don't have experience, but I've seen this done before and it looked fairly convincing, with care -
>get spare wefts or scrap hair, and a piece of felt that matches the colour

>attach with spirit gum
There are probably tutorials that give a better explanation.

I'm guessing you don't have a lot of sewing experience.
>buff banner patches
You'll need to paint those yourself or make them out of carefully-cut-and-layered pieces of fabric (felt would work). If you're willing to spend money for a more legit-looking product, ask around for people who will do custom embroidered patch commissions. Be prepared to spend >$20 for each patch, though, since the person might making a design from scratch.
>belt
To pattern, take your waist measurement and add a few inches for the length. For the width, maybe 3-4 inches. Trace the rectangle onto newspaper, hold it around you, and see if it works.
To build - craft foam with pleather or canvas glued onto it, and a velcro attachment (you could hide the velcro under one of the hip pouches). The hip pouches you could probably find on eBay or at a military surplus store.

>but why not polyfill
Make a sleeve out of stretchy material, glue clumps of polyfill to the sleeves and sew them down at points to make the contours and crevices. Seal with hairspray so they stay fluffy-ish but lose their tendency to detach in bits.
Mind, I am completely bullshitting this so I don't know if it would work.

>>8262978
I've actually done a character with a similar shape before, and I pulled two petticoats up to my underboob or even to over my bust, depending on how I was feeling. The petticoats had elastic waistbands, though, which made it easier. Your idea with the crinoline and strap suspension would work.
Sleeves look the same colour as the rest of the main dress; I think it's just shading. 6 meters of fabric is good for the dress, the chest overlay, and sleeves. I'm a little iffy on if it would cover the cape, too, since the sleeves already look drapey and voluminous and the cape is drapey and voluminous in its own right. Build the dress pieces first, see if you have enough left for the cloak.

I see, so I need to anchor the rods really well? The spear design from the in-game model has these grip-looking features, so I could probably attach those to the chestplate to create the effect that they're stuck in me without them being... y'know, stuck in me.

Either that or I have really tiny boobs, so I could just make the chestplate thicker than it's supposed to be.

What hair type do you have? Did you dye/bleach/straighten it a lot before this started happening?

It could be that your hair is in bad condition, so you should use a conditioning treatment. They come in boxes of five little tubes, and you use them every week for a month. They've always helped me out if my hair gets nasty from dying.

If the issue is that it's not 'bouncy' enough (like it lies flat on your head) you could try teasing it or putting in hair bumps to make it seem more voluminous than it is.

That's essentially it. But you need some sort of rigid anchoring mechanism, so a hardened breastplate or something of the sort.

(Crinoline anon here) Thanks a lot for your advice ! Regarding the cape, I already have the fabric for it, so I won't need to worry about having enough left. I kinda fucked up though, because I bought velvet for the dresses, so the nap will complicate things.
Maybe should exclusively use it for the lighter dress (Since what you said about shading sounds right, I guess I could turn the darker one into a kind of hanbok skirt like in my pic ) and go look for some nice twill or velvet, either a darker brown or black for the other one, it might be less of a hassle.

Is 893g the total weight of the item itself + all packaging material? In that case, 893g is counted as 32oz, which should still qualify for USPS First-Class International Package. Go to usps.com and follow their instructions on making a label online, then pay directly. Print it out and attach it securely to your package. There's a 10% discount if you make labels this way instead of hand-writing on the package, waiting forever in the post office line, and having them weigh & charge you there.

In my experience of shipping stuff to Canada, USPS First-Class has never gotten lost for me. That said, what shipping option did the buyer pick and pay for?

>> No.8272298

>>8272149
OK, it looks like you are looking at the USPS site. The flat rate boxes follow the motto "if it fits, it ships". Choose a box size that your item will fit into - at 893g, I'm guessing a small or medium size box will work, but check the dims and make sure. You can pick up a priority mail flat rate box right at the post office. If there are none in the carousels, just go to the counter and ask them for one. These boxes are free, and in fact you can order them online and they will deliver them to your door for free. The blue boxes are First Class Priority Mail (ship faster, offer more insurance, and ships internationally) whereas the red boxes are just regular Priority mail (domestic only). Since flat rate box prices are not based off weight, you can print your postage at home and get the online price.

For int'l packages, you will need to fill out a customs form. I'm assuming your item costs less than $2,500US so it will be very easy to fill out. Put in shipper's info (yours) and the recipient's info. Towards the bottom, they will ask for description of package contents: you can put something very general (clothes, documents, etc), how many pieces, and cost. If there's anything about billing details, mark it "prepaid". Put your item in the box and seal it. Take the box and form to the counter, along with your postage and customs form. They will give you a plastic "bag" that sticks to the box. Put both the postage and customs form into the bag then hand the PO worker your package.

Since your package is less than 1kg, postage is likely cheaper if you ship via normal first class. In this case the price will be based off weight. The disadvantage is that you have to go buy your own box which sometimes offsets the amount you'd save shipping this way. IMO it's just easier to ship flat rate, especially if you're just selling an item every now and then.

If you start to get flustered, don't be afraid to ask a PO worker for help. Hope that helps!

Is there a way to paint over a patent leather finish? I have a purple patent leather belt (both the belt and the buckle) that I'd like to make black with a grey buckle.

The belt will be worn against white clothes, so hopefully a paint that won't rub off, and preferably something that would be available at JoAnn or a home improvement store, since I don't have time to order online. My last ditch is making a fabric sheath. Thanks in advance!

To the anon about the printing label, it gave me a general idea of the shipping cost(I figured I'll just use a box I have around the house) which would be $28.47 to ship it.

For a sword that long and thin, you might want to try carving it out of wood (balsa wood is sandable and apparently pretty easy to work with, and I've heard birch wood is a preferred alternative for some people). Otherwise, I'd actually use posterboard on that to get the smoothness and straightness down.
>weird curvy swords
was geared more towards fantasy anime swords and swords that double as modern art sort of shit.

But if you're looking for expanding foam, I went down to a hardware store and grabbed a bottle of crack filler. It's a spray foam that expands as it dries.

Seams and then hems, but I've never used a serger (though I imagine it should still be the same?). I think the goal should be to assemble the garment first, and then go over all the hems and make a nice finish. You're not going to be able to make that elbow and keep it in a metal-looking plating if you want to still be able to bend and move it. Look up "vriska serket arm tutorial" or "winter soldier arm tutorial."

At a glance,
>black close-fitting sleeve
>pattern the armour pieces with newspaper taped to your arm
>trace the newspaper onto craft foam or worbla
>paint, seal, weather
>glue the armour pieces to the sleeve

Another alternative is to sew a sleeve out of silver vinyl and sew/draw the lines onto it (where there are breaks between the plates).

Top-stitching is what professional companies do for stripes on sailor uniform collars, actually, and it looks great as long as alignment doesn't shift and you press it afterwards.
You can also use iron-on adhesive tape (like Heat n' Bond tape) to do away with top stitching, but the trade-offs are that the bonded surface will be stiffer and may peel/curl at corners. There's also the risk that if you mess up and the adhesive shifts from where you want it, the bonded stuff does not come out of the fabric and you may have to start over entirely.

Never use foam for a thin sword like a katana. Wood will always be a better option. Foam only works for big chunky swords. Even with a core like a dowel foam will chip if hit wrong at that thickness. Look up Chioky's bleach zanpakuto tutorials for basics.

OR an easier way is to go to eBay/amazon and look up a prop wooden katana meant for a bleach cosplay in the length you want. Your's is pretty long so "Ichigo bankai wood" should find you one. These things are great because they're so mass produced the usually only cost $25-40 and are kind of crappy so they are easy to disassemble. Sand the finish off and repaint it silver or just paint the silver right on if it's one of those glossy black finishes.

I've tried so many times to make good katana blades from scratch and it's a frustrating shape. with these suckers no only do you get a good shape for the blade but a sheathe as well. I've got a small stock of wood bleach swords meant for characters no one likes that sold for about $10.

These are both great ideas! I'm personally inclined towards WW Link for a starter cosplay. It's mostly simple pieces with one or two complex pieces that will keep you a good blend of interested/boggled and will help you improve at crafting!
>noob tip, if you're looking for cheap wire, don't want to invest in a huge spool, and don't know shit about gauges, floral/wreath wire is a good place to start - I found a few yards at the dollar store for respectable money

Journey is also doable but unless you're a stickler for precision and careful detail, the pattern at the bottom hem will get frustrating. It's something that I find daunting - the design is beautiful and simple and geometric, but proportions have to be carefully matched and everything needs to be clean. Don't let that dissuade you, though; it's certainly possible to pull off a good beginner's Journey cosplay with carefulness and taking your time!

I don't see why it wouldn't work but I'm not very experienced with the subject. Maybe use some sort of rechargeable power source?

I'm worried about the battery life because of those 1/4" plugs. I'm not sure how much the extra resistance matters compared to the wire itself.

I've ben using tea dying a few times to either dull or darken thread or fabric, it worked pretty well for me but I've never tried it on felt.

Anyone have any idea where Dragonsong Forge and SwordsAxe gets their props from? I assume they don't make their products themselves for the most part.

>without making the spear itself quite flimsy?
Wouldn't most conventions not allow something this pointy and rigid, or is this for private photo shoots? Are there exceptions for contests? I wonder if there would be any way to recast the blades with a rigid core blended with soft points. I wonder if you could properly illuminate that thing. Frosted surface? I bet light wouldn't travel down the whole surface without some fancy fiber optics, or someone recently mentioned UV-reactive material and special lighting which might be much easier though would still require powerful lighting, but hopefully easily set up for photo shoots or contest presentation.

It won't matter much of the spears are rigid but they're not rigidly fastened. I think ideally you want an entirely rigid chest piece so that they can't wiggle in relation to each other. Imperfectly would be with a front and back plate, which will break the illusion if you breathe with your rib cage. Ideally you'd at least have each pair connected to each other by a rigid band, though the back view only shows two sticking out the front, and the front view only seems to show one for some reason, I mean protruding, not just showing a glowing wound.

I don't know if there's any point in asking, but is it possible for a depressed NEET guy past his prime to get into cosplay? I don't know. I really just want to play pretend, and learn some practical skills. My main goal is something so obscure I don't think anyone would ever know what it is, but I guess maybe beyond that some generic WoW might be alright.
Is there ever any apprenticing?

if nobody is stopping you do you even need to ask?

as long as you're not morbidly obese you can cosplay fine

requesting pic related to be redrawn as more of a body-suit without the armor. I have someone that can make the suit pattern but i need a better idea of how i'd like the suit to look as a normal suit. Though, i kind of want it to keep a mechanical look and might look in to make the limbs some time in the future

I hope this is the right thread for this.

I'm searching for a basic pair of brown flats that won't fall apart after 2 wears. I just need a nice brown like pic related. I wear flats a lot so I don't really want to spend more than $40 unless they are built to last.

P.S. I'm in the US

Ah, sorry. I guess I'm just being retarded asking people if it's worth doing, since it's such an individual issue.
I wish I'd gotten into girly things ages ago. Now my youth is so far gone. I've got old man hands. Well, if I make any progress maybe I can stave off this recent trend of putting on weight for the first time in like 2 decades before I overshoot the healthy average.

For the hood, is pic related even physically possible?
I tried making a mockup of it once, and it ended up being one piece for the back, one for each side, and then a connecting bit in the front, but I was wondering if there's a better way to do it since I don't know much about pattern-making.

I have a really general question. What brand makes the best lolita blouses for their price? I know it depends on fabric quality, but for example- a blouse from Infanta vs. blouse from Chess Story? I know Bodyline is inexpensive, but a lot of their blouses tend to look very boxy (I know the photos are bad on their site, but sometimes stock images is all I can go by.)

tl;dr - Is there any brand or style that is well known for good blouses, but preferably under $75 a blouse?

Tea is not going to work on felt unless it's wool or made of an organic fiber. Rule of thumb is that organic dyes will dye organic fibers and synthetic fibers take synthetic-specific dyes like iDye Poly.

I'm having a pretty hard time finding the right color and style wig for Mamimi. I found this wig and I don't mind cutting it to the correct length. I'm way more concerned about the color though...
What do you guys think about the color?
