Is anyone else getting sick of Chinese Lolitas driving up the price of secondhand brand?
I remember when it was crazy to see the holy trinity exceeding the $1000 mark, and now there are so many dresses peaking past even PC prices.
I'm not one usually to complain about prices, but I feel like there has been a huge shift in price range of brand from when I first began lolita to now.
Even unpopular prints, now days rarely go under retail.

Yes and No.

Yes, as it makes western girls justify their prices for unpopular pieces. The recent shitstorm with Wonderfinch is a good example.

No, it makes me look at my current wardrobe/ auction items and ask myself do I really need it.

The only areas it's changed is my opinion of trying to get items when they get released first time. However, AP is not a brand I like to wear so I do feel sorry (and annoyed) for the girls by the way AP does their releases.

Looks like chemise a la reine.
I have a similar chiffon blouse from them, I think in cream. It's close to btssb ivory, a bit lighter. I wouldn't describe it as pale yellow unless you would call most ivory that. (I mean I think it's their cream, it certainly is not even close to offwhite)
It's quite sheer by the way, bra colour shows through a bit.
Just chose whatever tone suits you more, I would personally pick the cream for myself.

There's still a fair amount of dresses on yja and mbok under 10k yen, and some of the unpopular dresses have been relisted over and over without buyers. I think it's just an in-between season, spring cleaning season is over and sales season hasn't started, so I guess not many girls have reason to dump their things on the market for cheap.

I wouldn't put the price increases entirely at the chinese lolitas' feet, they seem to go for some very specific prints and totally ignore the rest of the market. You're pretty all right so long as your dream print isn't something they're after, the sellers will eventually realise the price is too high and bring it back down.

And anyhow, I remember when Iron Gate used to go for only double the retail, and then shortly afterwards some European lolita started bidding it up to over $1000. So you could lay the blame for Iron Gate costing that much at the feet of European lolitas, if you need to blame a group of people for price increases.

I didn't even notice the crosses in the print, and it'd not even an architectural print where the focus is on the cathedral architecture - the focus is clearly on the night sky patterns. I agree with the other anons...are you afraid to tell her because you're unsure of her reaction, or you believe from past experiences/things she's said that she will have a negative one?

if you're unsure, maybe try to test the waters like watch rupaul's drag race or some shit or just somehow get onto the topic of drag queens and cross dressing and see how she feels about it. if you think she's going to have a negative reaction, well...what the other anons said are true is that she'll probably find out at some point. i don't know her, but if she ends up finding out her own there's also a million different ways it could go because she might get mad that you didn't just tell her straight-up. i know these things aren't easy but i hope you are able to find a way to tell her because hiding things from your SO like that isn't a great way to live in a relationship. i'm not saying you have to break up with her if her reaction is negative either, but also a really important thing in a relationship is being free of (fear of) judgement from partners for things we like to do.

imo, if your girlfriend really loves you/likes you/enjoys you for who you are, she will do her best to try to learn and understand and accept the things you're into

>> No.8265741

>>8265703

I have no idea how she would react, I'm just afraid it'll be bad . I'm afraid that she could try dealing with it and breaking up with me later when she can't deal with it. I just don't want go through the shame of being into dressing up in Lolita. I'm aware of the drag race show, but I'm not into it. I just really dislike that type of drag queen personality where they think being a girl means being a sassy materialistic bitch. I just like playing dress up, but I don't necessarily want to be a girl. I just think it's cool dressing up and acting like another person or character.

My girlfriend knows I cosplay at conventions. She just doesn't know that I also pack up a dress and go to Lolita meet ups. She doesn't go conventions with me .

I just think she won't like the idea of me crossdressing because she's such a normie with vanilla tastes in everything. I had to explain to her why an adult would be into cosplay. She used to think anime was just Sailor Moon and DBZ stuff.

>> No.8265772

>>8265741
Anon, it sounds like your girlfriend and you might just be incompatible in certain ways.

Just tell her and explain to her why you like it. Maybe she'll think it's weird but she's either going to accept it or not and you'll know, which is better than hiding it and then having her find out by accident or through someone else. *That's* going to make you look like a weirdo.

>> No.8265792

>>8265741
still though, either way you tell her and she hates it and eventually breaks up, or she finds out and gets pissed and breaks up. like I said, if she really loves you, she will take the time to try to understand why you like dressing up.

as for the rupaul, I just meant to say to use that as a gauge for what her reaction will be. if she doesn't care much at all about drag queens and has a positive or neutral reaction then hopefully you should be fine telling her about lolita, or vice versa if she has a negative reaction to the show you could either try to explain why a man would be interested in dressing up like/as a woman in a completely non-sexual manner just like how you had to explain why an adult would be into cosplay. again, if she really does care about you enough to keep being in a relationship with you she will try to be patient and understanding of your interests.

like, she's either going to take it or leave it and tbh from my point of view here on the internet i don't know how worth it it will be for you to go and keep hiding it. the worse that could happen is that she gets the idea that because you're hiding it, that it's something sexual in nature which will may make her 10x more uncomfortable then if you just sat her down and said "hey, i have to be honest with you, this is something i like to do, it's not sexual, i don't want to be a woman, i just like cross dressing in lolita because i like the ____ aspect of the fashion". what the other anon said is definitely true in that her accidentally finding out is what will make you look weird or what will be the most embarrassing for the both of you. i'd rather take a few days to muster up the will to tell someone about a hobby i'm afraid they'll find weird, or be caught off guard and confronted awkwardly about it when i least expect it.

an anon in the last thread was asking about closet child's "new super gorgeous pannier" and I said I was going to be picking it up from the post office today and I'd post pics.
so of course this is just me trying it on, dunno how it holds up with daily wear or repeated usage but some other anon said they liked it I think? it's also made out of a really stiff tulle, so I think it should end up being pretty sturdy? there's also a lining underneath if you're worried about the tulle being rough against your legs.
if you couldn't tell from the pics I'm a fattychan, surprisingly the waistband is pretty fatty friendly, wasn't sure if the measurements were lying or not on the cc website.
anyways sorry for the quick photo I know my skirt is a little messed up, oops. I like it from what I saw though! The poof was nice (I imagine if your waist is much smaller than mine it would look a bit poofier) and it seems like it'll be a durable petti, but I'll have to wait and see. As for adjusting it smaller than the listed measurements, I didn't notice anything where you could pull it tighter? there's a decorative ribbon on the waist band and then two ribbons on the inside that I think are for hanging it up, so.

You can see how different it is from the pure white blouse behind it.

hmm, if you want a longer petti then idk about this one, it's about average length (18 inches which seems typical to me? hits me at my knees). if you have the time to wait, bunny house's pettis at customizable in volume and length. you might also want to check out malco modes or some rockabilly-type pettis? those tend to be a bit longer it seems. (pretty sure I've seen posts on here/elsewhere talking about the type to get cause I know some are better than others)

buy it from a brand that you know you will be interested in. if you don't like sweet or AP, no use in buying an LP from them. a lot of LP's that come out aren't blind packs - I don't think AP has done blind packs for a while, instead they just come out with a few different packs (usually something like a simple dress, a special print made for the LP's, and a special set of a popular print) of varying price points. metamorphose's LP's are either special prints or somewhat blind - for the holidays this past year they had a print called swan garden for the packs, and then the rest were pretty much blind packs though they showed you examples of prints and colors you could get. most of the time the stuff in the pack matched too, so you would get at least a blouse and a skirt that would go together. some LP's are also just old stock.

there's so many varying types honestly I think it just depends on what you're looking for. if you're just looking to put more pieces in your wardrobe, blind LP's would suit you just fine, but if you want an actual coord you can wear you'll want to get a happy pack, so some of the stuff AP does or just any brand with specific items made for the LP.

anyways, I've bought 2 winter LP's from meta. first year I got a fully shirred skirt of some leftover fabric from their sweet poker series, a blouse that surprisingly fit me, and some accessories that weren't a good match but looked okay and some socks I could find use for in my wardrobe. for the most part it all went together nicely. this past year again most of it went together nicely, and I think I got a leftover skirt. blouse didn't fit but I was able to sell it for $50. likewise I've seen people selling the skirt for $50-60, and the LP itself was less than 100 due to the yen/dollar conversion rate being nice. so even though I couldn't wear the blouse I got a skirt I liked, some socks and accessories, and made 50 bucks back on it. both LP's also came with a cute tote bag.

What's cgl's opinion of Qi, anyways? As weeb-y and cringeworthy as Wa? Better, worse?

Qi lolita is super popular in china (duh). Not sure how "weeby" can be applied to qi loli since weebs = ppl obsessed with wapanese stuff. It's just a high-collar dress with oriental print, nothing too different from other dress styles.

I personally think the silhouette of a qipao is easier to mesh with lolita than a kimono (in the same way a hanfu doesn't really work with qi, the kimono is often too flowy and not form fitting enough, particularly at the bodice, to incorporate into a good lolita silhouette).

I'm personally really partial to Qi lolita. They have some great examples on the Chinese forums. I'd recommend getting an indie taobao brand over F+F - if your friend knows what to look for, they have much more flattering designs than F+F hit and miss designing.

I'm honestly a bit curious to know how qi lolita is viewed over there. NNC care to give us the low-down?

qi pao /cheongsam is a fashion inspired by western form fitting clothing merged with some components of asian aesthetic. It emerged in the early 1900's, when a lot of western influence began spreading within China. So technically, yes, it suits the silhoulette because it was originally meant to emulate western style clothing in the first place.
Traditional chinese wear before then is hanfu, as mentioned.

Uhh, the qipao was originally cultural Manchurian clothing before they invaded China and spread their culture to the Chinese. The qipao was then westernised during the 1900s to fit the western silhouette better.

Before the qipao, they wore hanfu. But for a good 500 years, they were wearing qipao before the westerners came because of manchurian influence.

Pic related. Traditional qipao

I only ever see the hanfu in a soap opera or revival-esque context. I'm glad it's making a comeback though.

If it is bait, I'm taking it. Lolita is a niche fashion, so prices of brand items are very high. You might not find stuff that's your style right now, but I promise you, pretty non print jsks come very cheap, lucky for us non print lovers.

I check all the secondhand sites on the days they release stuff - closet child, maiden clothing, usagiyouhinten, fururun, etc. and auctions. You just have to be very patient and very vigilent.

For taobao shops - a lot of them do non print stuff, but most have reservations so you have to watch for the time period of reservation closely. Check out the google doc on the thread - there's honestly too many for me to list here. What comes to mind for me though is surface spell, yolanda, and akane&alois.

Hope that helps.

question is - should I try to join the SF local comm. I mean, since it's the area where the brand stores are located in the u.s. - is it all about owning brand? will they frown upon my handmades and bodyline?

besides that - what can you tell me about the SF lolis?
