Guy who beatdown chainmail bro here
Sorry bout autosage

What's everyone's stance on armour?

What would you normally wear to an event where you have to be on your feet fighting for the majority of the day. (Roleplay or battle royale)

Personally I prefer leather with Pauldrons and vambraces :D

>> No.8254717

>>8254707
depends on how serious are the dangers.
I mean an event is a long one and it's not like you need to wear all the armor all the time. But if there is a reasonable risk for battle I would wear my breastplate and backplate.and have my helemt and gauntlets close by. If there is a chance for shit hit the fan or shit already started hitting the fan then put on the arms too if I have time.

Or if it's a social situation all the time but there are people who might want to backstab you I would wear a shorter sleeveless chainmail under my cloths

If you get used to your armor and its not fantasy armor, you will be able to wear it for a long time without it falling apart or being very shitty to wear.

Aesthetically? I love it. Practically? Very, very much depends on the setting and the rules/benefits of the armor in the system you are playing.

I love full steel plate when it's well made for the person wearing it, and I'd like a set that actually fits me one day (but I would also like a horse to ride into battle, and that's about as likely).

I don't wear armor in the game I play in because the system benefit of it does not offset my loss of speed, when speed is a necessary part of my class.

I think well made leather armor looks nice, but I'm not particularly into it. I also like the idea of chainmaille, and enjoy making it, but I don't actually like how it looks.

>>8254725
I need more photogenic friends now that I'm making more garb for people. I could model menswear if I had a binder on, but I need some variety of faces, and my fiance looks like a blob in photos. What is your friend offering in return for your services? I once did makeup modeling for a friend of mine who was filling her salon portfolio and I got donuts and a bottle of raspberry wine out of the deal.

I asked one of the people at my LARP about armor, and he told me that most players choose to forego armor for the extra mobility.

Personally, I like light armor with leather or metal used to reinforce key parts. Brigandine is my favorite in terms of a balance between aesthetics and comfort, but from a purely aesthetic point of view, a well-made breastplate or chainmail hauberk narrowly beats it out. I just don't like wearing something that hangs from the shoulders like that for a long period of time.

I got no armor right now, unless you count a SPES jacket and a mask.
When I actually get my shit together and roll up my character, I'm going to get a thigh (or knee)-length gambeson with some simple shoulder cops. Maybe greaves, couters, bracers, and knee cops in the future. Maybe a breastplate or a brigandine later. Maybe.

Leather can be cool when it's played to the strengths of the material and not just be a lazy man's steel plate.
Leather scale? Yes
Some kind of leather lamellar? Definitely
A solid leather cuirass? Questionable
Studded leather? No.

Question: Is there a standard language for Eurolarps?

I've been to a few local events in my state but none of reached the quality of the eurolarps I see in this thread. I speak English and fluent German but a lot of the good larps seem to be in Russia/Eastern Europe. Are these events held in their country's native languages?

Something I've wondered about. How does exposing the cloth that connects the plates, such as in a coat of plates or brigandine, compare structurally to armors that use cloth as a backing, such as scale, tatami or kuyaks. The obvious answer is that the cloth would be more easily cut and the plates severed if it was on the outside, but you never know.

Not really. The standard language for international communication is in english, so if you come over here expect to be talked to in english, but the players will generally speak between themselves in their own mother language. Some might be as polite as to speak in english between themselves if you're present.
It's not at bad as it sounds, if you play a foreigner character it even enhances immersion.

1- fair play

All physical contact is forbidden, physical charge is forbidden. the marshals (identified by blue and yellow clothing) represent the autority on the battlefield. they are there to make sure everything is going well. it is your responsability to count the hits you receive , not those you give. everyone on the battlefield can be a target (with the exception of the marshals). it is forbidden to backstab your own front. (but that one changed because of politicals ingame reasons i think)
2- the hitzones

The body is divided into 6 regions with 1HP each, they are : left and rigth arm (from the fingers to the shoulders) , left and rigth legs (from the toes to the hip) torso( front and back) and the head wich include the neck, but exclude the face ( eyebrows, eyes, nose, mouth, jaw , ear and temple)

3 - Death and injuries

When the number of Hitpoints of a body region is down to zero, you cannot use it, if one or two legs are hit, you must get on your knees. and you cannot move(but still figth) for the head or the torso, it means death . a dead player must get on the ground, stop moving and stop talking . it is forbidden to fake death.

4- Armor protect by adding Armor Points. non cummulative. if a region of the body is protected by different type of armor (exemple: plate gauntlet over chainmail shirt). only the part protected by a specific type of armor is protected. in no way possible a region of the body can lose more Armor points than the highest protection value.

a)- O AP : Clothing, suede , fur

b)- 1 AP : Soft leather, bamboo, composite materials , padding. gambisons. leather boots. steel toe boots (does not count as plate)

c)- 2 AP : Leather armor of atleast 3mm . Composite armor, imitation metal. metal rings of more than 3/4 inch of internal diameter.

D)- 3 AP : Chainmail. scalemail. armor with metal ring of less than 3/4 inch of internal diameter. brigandine

E)- 4 AP : Metal plate armor , 18 gage minimum for steel , 16 gage minimum for aluminium

5 - Weapons and combat

It's the hit that count, not the force (watch out for headshots). it is forbidden to throw projectiles or trusth your weapon at the head. all weapons of 112cm(44inches) do 1HP dammage. weaons of more that 112cm(44inches)arrows/bolts and javelins does 2HP dammage . Weapons more than 112cm must be helf with 2 hands. weapons of 152cm(60inches) must have a mark at 50cm of the base and cannot be used if the two hand are on the same side of the mark.

6- Magical weapons and Runic combattant (FUCK MAGIC)

Magical weapons have a brigth color and are easily identifiable (just like big dragqueen of fagness) they kill with one hit, so if a player receive a hit from a magical weapon, even on your armor and shield (FUCK THAT SHIT) , the player who dies with a magical weapon in hand must put it in evidence on his body when dead and free from all entrave (except they dont, they die ON IT or die throwing the weapon backward. (Motherfuckers). they can be looted in combat. and if you ever get your hand on one of those, you must bring it to the Templars who will spend ingame virtual point to destroy it from the game so it is never used again. See...its written in the rulebook.
Only magic weapons and runic combattant can hurt monsters.
Runic combattant must wear a scarf with a specific color given by the organisation and can inflinct damage to monster, the only magical object permited on the field are those in the register of bicolline. against monster the magical weapons does the same damage as a normal weapon.

7 - Healers

Each one of them wear a hourglass of healing homologated by Bicolline, it is forbidden to steal hourglass except those identified by the hippocamp logo. to provide healing. they must turn the hourglass while touching the dead or injured with one hand. a dead or an injured will be healed only after the hourglass is empty (30 seconds for a injured, 1 minute for a dead). healing bring back all of the Hitpoints and armor points. every person healing or being healed cannot figth or move during the processus of healing. if the healing is interupted. it must be started over.

8 - Monsters

Small monsters have 10HP and big monsters 20HP . they are immune to projectiles other than siege weapons and monster can figth another monster (wich i sadly never seen yet...kaijus figth anyone?) small monsters does 2 damage and can be blocked by shields. big monster weapon kill on hit: this mean that a person dies if hit by a big monster by a hit received by a big monster . even on the armor or shiel. the only exception is the weapon wich is destroyed when hit by a monster. it is not permited to entrave the movement of the monster.

9 - Siege Weapons

To destroy a siege weapon you must remove the red fanion on it. only the servant of the siege weapon can use the machine. siege weapon projectiles kill on it : even with armor and shield. you cannot block projectiles with your weapons. they kill monster on hit. Canonballs can destroy other siege weapons. siege weapon projectiles are still deadly if they bounce of the ground.
(if you make a ballista from a normal bow and put it on wheel, you are everything that is wrong with Bicolline and i will probably hit you really hard if i catch you)

10 - Homologation and marshals

All players, weapon , shield. monster, magic weapon, hourglass, siege weapon. must be homologated before entering the battlefield. the processur of homologation and different information on the standart of fabrication for the weapons can be found in the homologation section of...(ah fuck i'll have to translate this too rigth?) marshal have the power of life and death on every figthers and can ask the dead to move .if an accident happen, they are those you must speak to.

A few questions:
>Death
Is there permanent death in Bico, or do you just lie there until a healer gets to you?

>Character factions
What are the character factions I can join? Which ones should I avoid? Would it be easier to just join yours so I have someone to show me the ropes?
I'm assuming garb questions are based on the factions.

>Fighting
Are there faction/PvP fights, or is it mostly staffed/monster fights.

>i am a grill btw
If I want to fight, should I expect to be playing a man (Obviously no problem with that, it would probably be harder for me at this point to play a woman, plus I'd need to get a hairpiece)?

>Quebec
Will I have an opportunity to try poutine for the first time?

>If you have fries in your food i am allowed to steal one under the ''stolen fries taste better'' law.

>Is there permanent death in Bico, or do you just lie there until a healer gets to you?
No permadeath, you stay there until a healer get you or if the scenario have respawn, until all combat is gone near you and you go to your respawn point, combat are only on the battlefield, no combat in the village except for roleplay reason if you feel like it.

>What are the character factions I can join?
the list would be too long. factions could be determined by kingdoms, religions, feud, race...

>Which ones should I avoid?
depends on what kind of person you are, do you hate spending a week with childrens? dont go with some guilds full of them. want to be able to speak english with everybody, join the lions or the templar ....pretty much any true faith group actually or the ordo cervi.

>Would it be easier to just join yours so I have someone to show me the ropes?
I always recomend people to just come how they want and follow me the first days or so, after youve made some friends you'll see you will spend time with many new people and may even want to figth on their side for some skirmish just for fun.

>I'm assuming garb questions are based on the factions.
yeah pretty much, its pretty easy to see who's playing who, the Gaurydrims are playing Gauls, True faith are playing crusaders, the Régular are playing lansquenets... some group dont have a ''theme''tho and are just a bunch of dudes in a group with suit that dont fit together but its okay also.

>Are there faction/PvP fights, or is it mostly staffed/monster fights.
Bico is full pvp, the only staffed and monster figth we get are npc in the virtual wargame, you are always figthing real people who want you dead for the same reason you want them dead.

>i am a grill btw
no youre not, you are a jumping spider

>If I want to fight, should I expect to be playing a man

Continuing on woman/mens

The only reason why true faith woman dress as man its because people have big egos and they did not like being ''beaten by a grill'' so one day we just decided to give them fake mustache for ze lulz.

But yeah...if you want a fonctional armor..you're gonna end up looking manly anyways in it because...armors are not made to be pretty, they are made to be effective.

>Will I have an opportunity to try poutine for the first time?
You will probably eat one or part of one everynigth because its the ultimate drunk food.
you will also taste the Chipoutine wich is a poutine with the fries cut like chips.
you will eat so terribly bad (but good...i mean you will mostly eat meat and past midnigth drunk food) but will lose atleast 3 pound during your week from all the figthing.

>In exchange for a space to crash, a single french fry is pretty much nothing.
That would be 2 Liberty fries then with mayonaise on it. (trust me its good)

Stains just make it more authentic!

Color matching is key to not look ridiculous. Patterns are fine, just make them big (fabric printing isn't a big thing for a little longer. I'd suggest posting your planned patterns so I can get more specific.
Also pick a metal color and stick with it- if your armor is silver, make your belt buckles silver.

Pick a main color, then pick a secondary color, then pick an undercolor (for your base clothing- pants and shirt, typically offwhite and brown).
All the colors can have specific meanings depending on the time period and can represent your own personal wealth so it's always good to be careful.
In general I associate blues and yellows with 'good guys' followed by any jeweltone+white. Just stay away from red and black.

I'm going to be using US$ here. It is best to always assume at least (time x $8.50min wage)+materials = minimum costs.
Obviously these costs can be cut if you know the person who is making it, because they may be willing to cut time costs. The individual skill of the maker also matters because a less experienced seamstress will take longer. Makers will often cut their costs even more because otherwise they can't compete with manufacturers and you get a lot of people going "Weeehhh, why isn't it cheaper???"

I personally charge $120 for fancy appliqued cloaks with heraldry and suchlike on them, and can usually get $80 for one of my latex masks. You can poke through Etsy to see what stuff costs on the more expensive end.

Someone here mentioned dyeing fabric at home a while ago.
I have a white cotton wench blouse that I want to dye light yellow, how would I go about doing that?
I have plenty of turmeric and an onion at my disposal. Looking to get a colour like pic related. I've looked around but most places give you rough instructions as opposed to any kind of a water/onion skins/vinegar/whatever ratio. Here, have some opinions!

Natural dyes are unreliable as hell and never are the same twice (hence no reliable instructions), so no matter what you're going to want to test it repeatedly on swatches of fabric.

My personal preference is to, rather than go by the mixture, go by the amount of time the item is in the bath. Make the dye as strong as you can, test swatch it, if you like the color put your item in- take it out every minute or so and rinse some cold water on it (so you aren't being tricked by extra dye) and examine the fabric, assume the finished product will be two or three shades lighter once it's dry.

I've always done it as 1 cup of vinegar and 1/2 cup salt to 4 cups of water. Since you have a limited quantity of materials to make the color itself I'd recommend putting all your turmeric and onion skins into the pot first and then adding water- a cup or two at a time- to the pot until your test swatches look good. Then add the vinegar and salt (which is mostly there to slightly brighten the color and make it stick in the fibers better).

If you're going for a more brown yellow, put more teabags and onion skins in than tumeric (tumeric is very bright).

Test swatches are your friend, and be prepared to accept something that doesn't look exactly like what you were going for.

Also if your wench blouse is manufactured, be warned- while the fabric may be cotton, the thread it was sewn with may not be, and when you dye it it can leave bright white lines of stitching on it.

Thin latex will be more like what people use to make prosthetics out of normally.

It's up to you, but I would go with the thick just because then you get to control it (and probably get more latex for your money).

Don't try to stir water into it, btw, it really doesn't work. Shaking is the only way I've found that works.

I'm still a little lost on how it's applied to weapons. Is it dipped? Painted on?

>> No.8260395

>>8260381
I'm way more familiar with plastidip, but principle is the same with latex, read this tutorial:

http://www.dagorhir.com/forums/index.php?topic=15445.0

Just do it with latex- make it thick enough to paint on. Also don't bother to make fabric striking surfaces.

Also buy a cheap chip brush or something because latex will ruin your brushes, no joke. You will never be able to clean them.

Oh, also wet latex smells foul- like unwashed vaginas mixed with sulfur and turpentine. I recommend you do your latex work outside.

You'll definitely want to be outside if you plan to Isoflex your weapon. This will make it more durable, but the fumes are rather toxic.

Okay so...

Last saturday i went to the photoshoot for bestarius clothes and i will post me in fantasy stuff eventually huhu.

After that i went to the fundraising gauls party and there was this ticket based lotery for stuff they had.

i said to myself...okay so what if i dont win anything, atleast i'm helping them build a nice building and having fun.

i placed bet on 3 item, an historical set of forged cutlery, a coyote pelt, and a kettle helm.

i won the kettle helm and i was pretty happy.

Category 1 cyclone over my area all day. Power went out a few hours ago but I kept working
I'm cutting leather strip for my weapon from a patchwork leather bag I found in an Op shop on the weekend. De stitched the zipper and the vinyl attached by candle light so it's just the leather now
just doing some strip now
I feel so...crafty

I went to a boffer practice yesterday in the park. No exciting combat techniques used- mostly just cardio from running around.

This ultimate hipster guy stops, asks us what's up. Turns out he plays in a local HEMA group (I didn't think there was a local HEMA group). We let him play with us for a little while
>"And he beat us to death with his extreme combat skills!" Screams Dystopia Rising guy

He was actually pretty cool- and kicked our asses pretty handily as long as he wasn't ganged up on. He was intrigued by this 'roleplaying' we were talking about so I have his email.

My ex girlfriend was there though, and she was trying to say that Alliance does the 'if it touches the weapon it's void' thing. Comeon! I just legitimately hit you like, three times! I didn't even baseball bat your weapon out of the way!
I asked my fiance about it today since he's head of rules, and he says baseballing the other weapon out of the way is okay, but he doesn't think voiding upon contact is the rule. He's going to check with the marshals.

I really hope they don't start doing voiding, that stuff is bullshit.

I can see why baseballing wouldn't be allowed, as you could damage or break weapons that way. Over here that seems to be in the social contract rather than a hard and fast rule, mainly because folks don't want to risk breaking their own weapon.
However, not taking a hit because someone parried then attacked you is a stupid rule.

I'm excited about being able to try HEMA, though. I'm really not a very good fighter, but I still surprised at how handily hipster HEMA guy beat us up.

>>8268210
Oooh, my bad. I'd like to have a ruleset like Bico at the very least, but I also really like having permanent death because I feel it adds to the roleplay.
Though at least when you read the 60 some such page Alliance rulebook, where half of that is flavor text, you can kinda see how it works. There's another local game, RoC, where the rulebook has no flavor text and is, and I'm not kidding here, 124 pages long. I've never played RoC but I've read that rulebook like, 3 times and I still can't understand how the game itself is played.

1 fortunately bicolline has managed to land some interesting subventions from the government and can now do some much needed improvements to the game.
2 there will be a new sanitary facilities with running water and showers. A electronic key system will be put in place for the showers.
3 a new fort will be built in the mage plains at the back. It will be about 128 feet by 256 feet with towers, gates and ramparts. There will also be 2 layers of defense so a outer wall and an inner wall. There will be movable sections to simulate wall breaches. The front wall and the inner wall will be built this year and the remaining 3 walls built next year.

4 the virtual world will become automated. Through good circumstances a third party company as been given the contract of building and maintaining the informatic system the new game that will be running. As much of the old system as possible will be kept in this new game. All the current holdings of guilds and people.stay the same. Some rule will be modified due to having to be compatible with an automated system an some of the rule that were either broken or boring will be changed but over all it should look very much like the old system. The restart should be gradual and hopefully we can start playing next bico and have the full system in 2016.
5 fire hazard . All fire pits will now have to be according to code which mean a concrete foundation and an anti spark screen.
6 combat rules. All magic weapons no longer one hit kill. They now provide runic warrior status which can be stolen. Monsters will get an overhaul will not get into details since there was some confusion and they still want to think on in after we pointed out some serious flaws in their system. Archer will now need a minimum of 6 arrow to enter the battlefield. No more guys showing up with only a bow and reshooting other people's arrows.
7 the grand battle will be named " The times of great trouble". It will be the end of the story arc that has been going on for the past 6 years. We have to expect many changes to the battle mecanics but we will only be given the specific of the battle on the Sunday of the grand battle.

Some new players don't even understand the idea of roleplaying, and we get people who think they're going to be playing D&D, with dice and everything, while also on a camping trip or something? They need all the help they can get.

The moment you step away from nylon plastic wasters, you wear a fucking gambeson, gauntlets, and a gorget. I've taken a hit from a feder on bare skin after a newbie got too excited during bind games. It left a welt for three days and we weren't even anywhere near full intent.
Once you stop playing around with learning the fundamentals of your particular system, you throw on your padding, grab your steel, and actually start sparring.

>>8268353

I'm pretty sure you need to deal with that stuff BEFORE you show them the rules. Also nothing wrong with flavor text but keep it separated from the rules. The rules should be short, easily understandable and very straightforward examples, with no flavor otherwise people will be too focused on the situation on the flavor text.

Real blood is actually a biohazard situation and can get you in EPA trouble if someone complains. So, it's kind of a hassle for a large public event. Plus, depending on where you get it from, there could be drugs in the blood that you would absorb through your skin (anti-parasitic drugs).

There are plenty of varieties. I'm under the impression that platic/wood wasters are most popular in the US though, and you'll have go to slavcountry to find a club that does the 'Real steel, no armor' thing, because they're the only one with enough balls and too little sanity to go full on with steelwasters without armour.

The shit I've seen man, those things are ridiculously dangerous when trying to bind or just doing oberhaus because they bounce fucking everywhere.

The property of flexing of steel wasters is an added bonus, but feders and shit are quite a new addition to the inventory (hanwei need not apply), and some smaller clubs (at least around here) tend to think, "Steel = real swords = super dangerous" even when it comes to feders.

tl;dr: wood/plastic wasters cause more injuries than steel because of attitude reasons and skipping on protection

3: Poultices for effect AND utility

Witch Hazel is an amazing substance: Its an astringent, an anticeptic, fights acne, and leaves skin feeling tingly. Its also cheap as hell and readily available. Why am I mentioning it when we're only playing at medicine? Well, because of that tingly astringent feeling, along with its one downside: It has a VERY strong herbal odor. It dissapates in minutes, but while this makes it less popular for daily use, it really drives home the feeling of an herbal poultice.

A little bottle of witch hazel, with some dabbed on a your linen bandage will have the same feeling as vick's vapor rub or seabreeze astringent on skin, and smell like something an herbalist will use.
