I'm wanting to put together a (bought) Demoman cosplay from Team Fortress 2.

Other than commissioning some random costumer to make the vest, the main part of the costume, how would any particular variation of paint-ball and/or tactical vest work?

And what about the grenade launcher?

And I do have a novice skill and making items, so the grenades should not be a problem.

In case it matters, I will be wearing a Stewart Royal Red tartan kilt in lieu of pants.

If you want to maintain some of the cartoonish look and proportions of the vest, you could make it with EVA foam. Approach it the same way foam armor is done, but give it a matte finish instead of a high shine, and it should work nicely.
I don't think a paintball or tactical vest would work as well, as they aren't as simplistic in design as Demo's vest is.

Ideas on what to make this drill out of?
Using EL wire for the lights through out drill lines.

I am making Flonne from Disgaea and I'm thinking of what shoes to use for her. Most people seem to go with regular red heels, but I always think that makes the cosplay look too top heavy, since her shoes are very bulky in the artwork.

Do you think a pair of shoes like these would work? I have a pair just like these, and it would be nice to be able to reuse them. I know her shoes doesn't have straps but I need straps due to very narrow feet. Or should I just go for regular pumps?

I want to paint an inflatable vinyl pool toy, but not sure how to go about it. What paints and techniques should I use that will be waterproof and wont crack after deflation?

What's the best way to scale up a pattern? I made a pattern for a bag and it looks nice but it's like only 75% the size I'd like it to be.

I'm trying to make a Shinichi Izumi cosplay and have no clue where to being with making the Parasite hand. How would I go about doing such a thing like pic related?

I'm thinking about doing a genderbent cosplay of Upotte!. I'm 6'0, 200lbs /fit/, and Upotte! is already out there in left field, so I was wondering, should I do a male school uniform, or just put the cherry on the cake and do a sailor fuku and skirt?

Hey guys, working with a friend on pic related. She's the one who's experienced with cosplay, not me.
She thinks that making covers for my shoes out of vinyl will be enough to look like the boots in pic related, but I'm not convinced and I'm secretly worried that it'll look like shit if I try to do any poses that show my feet prominently. (It's my first cosplay as well as my first convention, and she assures me that there will be people who will want to photograph me).
What does /cgl/ think? Should I go rogue and attempt to thrift something that looks similar, buy actual boots that'll look like these, or just go with the boot-covers? If I do go rogue, what kind of boots should I be looking for? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Well, making bootcovers isn't a novel idea. You can google images of it if you want to know what it looks like. You can of course also look for boots that resemble the ones in the costume. I personally prefer finding shoes that already resemble the cosplay rather than making bootcovers, but sometimes they (the boots) are hard to find so it's easier to just do bootcovers. If it's made well, it shouldn't look off.

I'm using watered down PVA glue for sealing my foam but the surface does not feel as smooth as I thought. I tried to sans it but it cracked. What so I do?

Plasti-Dipped my EVA foam armor and I'm getting air bubbles on it. Will adding a heavy layer cover this up? Will smoothing the layer while it's still drying help to prevent this from appearing again?

So the bulk of gilgamesh's sword, Ea is a black tube-like construction cut into 3 parts that spin.

I have a long black pvc tube that it about the right thickness, but how do I cut it into an accurate shape? The shape of the black part gradually thins out at the end like a long cone. How should I cut my tube so that it doesn't remain in it's uniform thickness?

You can't really take a hollow tube and taper it to that shape, as the thinner parts will not have enough support and it will collapse.
The best way to go about this is to get a thinner pipe, about the thickness of the handle, and build the cones around that, instead of trying to thin out a larger pipe.

I've got a problem with a fabric that's almost the right color but not quite, and I was wondering if I could get some advice with dye. I'm trying to make pic related's jacket, and I found a 100% cotton twill that's the right blue/green balance but it's not dark enough. Is there a way for me to go about darkening it, like running a black dye with half as much dye as I would usually use, or is that a terrible idea?

I think the color looks fine as it is. If it really bothers you, then yes you can dye it with watered down dyes, but test it before hand. cut some swatches and try out different mixes to see what you like best. And remember that it is not just the concentration of the dye, but also the amount of time you soak it.

You cannot taper a pipe. Imagine this is a cross section of your pipe. If you try to shave or cut it to a cone shape, you will cut through it.
What you should do, is build cone shapes around the center dowel out of foam or something light weight.

Can you still find stuff like this anywhere? Not fashion style with zippers and neon and thin fabric, but actual exercise clothing. Most of what I'm coming up with is real from the 80's vintage items or horrible quality fashion versions.

If you're going for a sailor fuku it will probably be hard to find a premade one to fit you without looking weird. I would go for the male uniform unless you want to sew a fuku to fit you. If you're doing Upotte! though, don't forget the gun!

That looks like a very easy dress to sew if you can find a pattern. If sewing is out of the equation for you I would look through thrift shops first. You can usually find older styled dresses for cheap. Just make sure you wash it before you wear it.

Used plastidip to prime it. Didn't seal it yet. It's made out of eva foam. Using rustoleum that bonds to plastic. I tried patching up the parts that just got fucked up. Should I scrap the entire side and reprime it?

I've found that Plastidip works better as a sealant than a primer. Try a spray primer then paint. Learned the hard way too. The plastidip wouldn't take the paint or if it did it just showed through too much.

Since it looks like the skirt material would be quite thin and not meant for being faced/lined, I'd personally draw the scallops on the fabric and use a soldering iron to slowly precision-cut them all out. The soldering iron has the added bonus of heat-sealing all of the edges in the process by melting the plastic.

I'm not sure if this is the best way to go about it though. Perhaps someone else will have a better idea.

I need to whip up something for a costume. Basically I need some sort of material to make a mask out of, something like a sock i wear around my head, covering everything. Something that's white and not transparent at all, so it'd look like I just have a blank white face

Kinda undecided on what direction to take with Tiki's dress. I'm making horns ouy of expanding foam and the outer bit of my helmet out of expanding foam. i was wondering if it would be best to make it all as one piece and what glue i would go to attaching it to the inner helmet. i've done alot of research but can't find anything like what i'm doing.

I'd suggest Google or Wikipedia for specific Japanese armor terms; that's not an area I'm really familiar with yet. In case the MS Paint text is hard to read, here is the list of terms:

Google will be your friend, as it is mine whenever I try to do anything kimono-related. Immortal Geisha's forums (now defunct, but still searchable) have a lot of information relating to kimono, even if armor won't be covered much. I had an idea for a "I've seen enough hentai" meme costume that will probably be pretty popular late night at cons. You can glue down the boot covers instead of attaching by a strap, though you can still sew elastic bands across the bottom of the covers and they shouldn't show if the covers touch the floor. I've had good luck with E6000 for the gluing method.

Air Dry Clay is very light and can be sanded down. Sculpy would also work, but larger pieces can get a little heavy.

The elastic method will work for flats as well, but if you go that route, consider making a bottom piece on the toe end, and coating it with plastidip, or some sort of rubberizer to keep the fabric from getting chewed up,
You could also make them permanent covers like >>8252898 suggested, but if these shoes are going to be sacrificed, I would instead sew velcro sections around the bottom edge of the shoe. That way, they can be used for several boot covers, you just need to put the other half of the velcro on the inside bottom edge of your covers, stick them into place, and you're all set.

As for the type of fabric, it all depends on the look of the shoes your trying to make.

Stretch fabrics are great, since you can fudge a lot of measurements and still have it perfectly stretch to fit, provided that you know how to sew and work with stretch fabrics. Non-stretch pleather/vinyl is generally difficult to work with due to the curves and hard-to-iron spots. Making the covers out of the same type of canvas will likely make construction easy, since it's stiff cotton-like material, though whether or not it'll look good will depend on how well-fitting they are (no lumps or excessive wrinkling when fitted over the shoe) and how closely they resemble the source material or match the overall flow of the costume.

Anyone have any experience with body paints and can recommend me a brand? First time using them, looking to paint my torso and arms orange (like in pic). Also any general tips when working with body paints like how to prevent it from smudging on cosplay, etc?

I own three wigs and I just got one which is like pic related.
I tried it on and I found the fit way too small; I understand the fit is snugger than regular wigs to keep it from falling back but it is tough getting it to cover my head (and I have short and fine hair, so hair volume is no problem).
Anyone has tips on putting on this kind of wigs?

One way to put it - every Tumblr-famous cosplayer also has a FB page, but not every Facebook-famous cosplayer has a Tumblr.

Facebook seems "higher tier" to me and I think bigger publications/groups think of it as a more legit metric of popularity (since your follower count is visible), but blogging on Tumblr feels more friendly, if that makes sense.

The method that some cosplayers use (and I like) is to use Tumblr as their primary social media format but also maintain a Facebook page -prominently linked to on their Tumblr- and update it with convention information, WIPs, and photoshoots. That way, the FB page is less cluttered and more streamlined.

I'm hoping to make a female Loki costume this year, but I'm not really digging any of the designs I've seen. However, I really love the cross-front of the Dany pattern, and it evokes the feel of MCU Loki's outfit without being a direct translation. Would it be totally obvious if I used the top of the pattern over black pants, done in green/black/leather, with a cape attached? I don't want to look like a stupid Dany/Loki mashup!

What about getting some plastic or aluminum pieces, form them over your shoulders, then cover in fabric (maybe some padding as well) and attach to the inside of the pelt.

This will give you a pelt that hooks over your shoulders

currently I'm trying to make a creamy mami cosplay but am having some issue with making her arm ruffles look good
I'm going to make them as a separate piece as they go around the whole arm and from fan art etc it looks pretty nice as a separate piece
I was thinking of using a nice sheer/semi sheer fabric and using the fishing line hem method to make it sturdy but how would i finish it off? ruffling using elastic looks bulky but surely if i just make it with a band covering the ruffles it'll keep falling off?

With pony tail wigs you often have to take out the pony tail, put in the wig and put it back in a pony tail while wearing it so it will fit you.

Are there any chest binders that work as well as underworks but a little cheaper?

How would I go about making the Kantai carriers' flight decks? I have insulation foam but I wanted to know if would be worth it to have something a bit more sturdy.

Exact yardage will depend on how big/tall the wearer is, but around 2 yards is sufficient if it's a girl shorter than 5'2" and 110lbs.
