These threads are always fun!! What print would you love to see made?

Also starting this thread because I was chatting with an artist friend about commissioning a Spoonflower fabric design for otome. Here are my ideas so far, thoughts?

>Storm/rainy day ( Clouds, lightning, rain, umbrellas at the bottom?) - Border Print

>Gardening (Seeds, waterings cans, ect) - All Over Print

>Shapes in Clouds (Animals, hearts, ect) - All Over Print

>Carousel Print (Assorted Animals not just horses/maybe no horse at all!) - Border Print

>School Supplies (Pencils, push pins, paperclips, ect) - All Over Print

>Lucky Cats (The Japanese waving ones) - Border

I'm in a print design class and I've been working on a few prints that I would adore to make into some cute lolita dresses! I just finished one up that's pink and blue and has some retro starburst shapes as a boarder
it's very cute
I'd love to see more baking related prints like honey cake, but like, not honey cake
and frankly I think we're missing the untapped potential of bee-themed prints

Alright, so here is my print. I'm gonna do some different colourways as that was the actual project that I should have been doing but I may have gone extremely overboard and designed this print and how it would work in a dress.
I've thought about getting this printed with spoonflower but honestly, I'm not impressed with the quality of their prints and their fabric. Like, I imagine its alright for stuff like, bags or quilts or stuff that doesn't need washed that often but for clothes I find the prints fade out super quickly and they're not always the greatest at matching colours.
I've got some other prints I've done if ya'll would like to see those! I love sharing with people who actually know the fashion I'm designing.

I agree that the font looks a little wonky. I hate giving crit, because as a former art student my program only gave positive crit to our special snowflake students and they all graduated thinking they were going to go places. I got told off so many times for critiquing someone's "perfect" work. So I am saying this, but at the same time I am expecting the entire board to tell me off.

I see a few weaknesses in this one. I don't know if it's the text (the kerning, etc just looks a little jumbled) or the gears(you only made a few and repeated them) I think if you put a bit more time into it, it would look a lot better. With something that is more complicated than your pink print, I think you need to be a bit more nit-picky with placement. Right now it almost feels a bit sparse(?) because of the few designs for gears. I would also experiment with the location of the gears as that one gear that is dipping above the brown background might look better in another location.

I like the theme, color scheme and contrast of gears with a script font.
Line up the gear teeth a bit better, use another font, isn't that the freebie Zapfino? Not unique enough for a custom print. Kerning and spacing is off as mentioned. Don't bisect the stripe to brown section exactly with the gear, use 1/3-2/3 proportion. One design trick is to mirror flip it, print the page and look at it in the mirror, checking for flow, proportion and the font legibility. Flaws pop out more easily.

I wasn't going to comment but the meat dress drove me to it. I DEMAND to want to see, more prints by Angelic Pretty and other Lolita Brands featuring VEGAN, VEGETARIAN, PESCETARIAN, GLUTEN FREE AND ALLERGY SENSITIVE OPTIONS!!!
Angelic Pretty is the WORST at this. They consistently release prints with names like "MILKY Cross" "MILKY Berry" "MILKY Chan" and there is even a DRESS WITH A MILK CARTON ON IT!!! Called Honey Cake
WHAT on EARTH is cute or "kawaii" about PUS FILLED cow udder juice? It's digusting and it does NOT belong in Lolita Fashion
I believe Angelic Pretty and other Brands use these milk related prints to cater to their Western Audience so that alone should be offensive enough to get the prints pulled OFF the shelves
Why doesn't this bother Anyone else?!?!?

There is NO REASON why Angelic Pretty's Honey Cake could not have used Soy Milk instead of regular Milk. The pancakes have butter on them but at least you could try and say they are dairy free Butter Pats. The Milk is clearly labelled MILK. There is NO REASON FOR THIS.
And another thing, Berry Prints. Milky Berry is the worst. Not only is milk mentioned again but almost all Berry prints have STRAWBERRIES. Those are the most Allergenic of all the berries. Why not feature cherries, Cranberries, blueberries, raspberries? At least the upcoming Cherry Maguerite attempts this and I commend Angelic Pretty for that in no way does it make up for their past transgressions.
>>8247280
I am glad Angelic Pretty has not yet but out a bread print. But given their insensitivity to those who are Vegan or with food allergies or sensitivities I would not put it past them. The only thing missing on Honey Cake are EGGS.

I'm working on a print I'll probably be releasing in December that's a watercolor print. All I have is an inspiration collage right now, but I'm curious to know what you guys will think since I see people asking for watercolor prints often. I'll post the collage when I get home, but it's themed around wishing, fields of four leaf clover and dandelions with wishing wells along the hem, little ladybugs throughout. The other accents would be lucky pennies, floating dandelions seeds, and possibly wishbones if I can work it in in a way that isn't too macabre. It's going to fade from sky blue with dewy rainbows to a night sky in the bodice with shooting stars.

I had one interesting idea for it but I doubt it will look nice enough to actually pull off, but I was thinking of having an extra inch below the clover and wells that was a soft, watery blue with little piles of coins that have been tossed into the well.

also, you should look into raw milk, unpasteurized, the way we drank it for thousands of years until the last 70 or so. comes from happy, consenting cows that live their lives happy eating grass in the sun, instead of spending a lifetime in a dark, dank hell. when the milk is unpasteurized, it's held to extremely high standards of cleanliness, unlike the pasteurized stuff, when can just be zapped and filtered. i get mine for 10 bucks a gallon at the local farmers' market - it's sold as "pet milk," but it's still god-tier stuff. real milk full of life, unlike the rancid, dead stuff sold at the supermarket. remember, not everything is black and white!

Here we go! It looks so busy in the collage, I know, and I'm considering cutting it down. But imagine it in a cohesive color palette, for staters. Softer colors, with a gentle fade from the misty sky to the night sky. The rainbow would be much, much more faint and the misty sky portion wouldn't be that long because I don't want it breaking the dress up into three chunks. The only other thing in the sky would be a few dandelion seeds floating up. Otherwise, I'm thinking it would be scenes in frames of the well in a garden, the wishbone, and coins strewn about in water, with one or two pennies floating down with a few bubbles. Each of the scenes would be in a frame of clover and dandelions and perhaps a few accent flowers, with small ladybugs on the leaves here and there.
So, am I on a totally wrong path here?

Sorry for the WIP quality, folks.

yeah, kind of a cross between Resplendent Nightmare and Rozen's Romance. I'm a really big fan of hers so that stuff just pops out to me a lot lol Do you have a page or something I could check out? I have very little in the way of artistic skills so I always hire artists for my prints and I really love your style and would like to keep you in mind for the future!

Please let us buy the bread one. Have you had fabric made in the past?

How do people feel about lolita prints made from stock art or vintage art? We all know JetJ and Haenuli do it, but a lot of the focus in this thread seems to be about people drawing their artwork instead of using cliparts. I'm curious if the artist name goes into the decision to purchase a print.

I think something like >>8263891's request would be pretty easy to fill if you bought some stock sunflower images and then filled in the background with something (eg- gingham or stripes are pretty easy backgrounds to make, or another stock of sunflower petals and seeds, or a combo, would work). Then print it via spoonflower or fabricondemand and take it to the local tailor if you can't sew, and wham, your desired print on a dress.

We need a print with vintage seed packets and gardening tools. This needs to happen now.

The issue is that clipart prints rarely turn out all that well. Look at the Violet Fane shit for an example. Just isolating the image and throwing it on a colored background or pattern usually ends up looking very cheap, or not at all as luxurious at what you might originally imagine.

I do, but it hasn't been updated in a while.
That was planned for this week, actually.
But my art tumblr can be seen at 'atelierilluminaire'.
it's mostly illustration stuff, though, I haven't put up many prints.

I haven't, any tips would be much appreciated if you have advice. I've heard to avoid spoonflower cottons because their blacks can turn out a bit wonky? But also I've read somewhere that it depends on which fabric you choose to print on.

Their cotton sateen turned out okay for me. I've only order samples thus far but when I get the whole dress done, I'll let you know. It's a deep navy, and everything else I ordered from them is crap. That bread print is pretty light, though, so it should be fine on spoonflower.

Speaking of bread, captcha knows what's up.

Fabric selection is up to the buyer on Spoonflower, though I guess you can make a recommendation in the description. Cotton Sateen is usually safe, the cheaper cotton is fine for light colors.

So, it's just a question of the source quality? A lot of the problems you mentioned can be eliminated if you look for vector stock art instead of trying to clean up a low res raster image, you'd at least be able to ungroup objects and delete backgrounds more easily. It's not going to be a walk in the park, but it's a lot easier than drawing it from scratch, particularly if you don't need the artwork to be arranged in a scene (so the lighting doesn't matter as much).

The only thing you need to watch out for the licensing, as free vector art is almost always free for non commercial use only, but that shouldn't matter for one dress for yourself, and you have the option of buying vector art with commercial use license.

I'm really more curious if there's a stigma against artwork that was produced this way, because the person "producing" the print is not the person who drew it, although they may have taken a lot of effort in arranging the artwork so that it looks nice on the dress.

I like both ideas and think they could work.

Personally I really like the idea of the whole dress being one large painting. I can picture the dandelions seeds becoming smaller and merging with the stars on top of the dress, and a nice scenic garden with a wishing well at the bottom of the dress. The dandelions and clovers would be in the foreground so they would be much clearer and more detailed and won't get lost in the background. I can't really picture a place for the coins or the wishing bones, though. I don't think the collage is too cluttered, if anything, I think you need to fill the "garden" with a few other things, because if the painting is too small, it's going to look odd when it's repeated and you end up with eight wishing wells and eight rainbows on the dress.

The scenes in frames sound a lot more manageable, and you'd be able to fit the wishing bones and coins in more easily. It doesn't sound as charming as the whole dress being in one painting, though, and you lose the nice effect of dandelion seeds turning into shooting stars.

Either way, quite looking forward to see what you end up painting. Hope you post the dress on here again once you're done drawing it.
