>Cosplay anime characters at comic conventions
People are chill about it or just ignore the fact

>Cosplay comic characters at anime cons
OMG we're being taken over! Why can't they just go away?!

What is up with this double standard?

>> No.8224786

Mostly the age of the attendees.
Comic cons have been around a lot longer, and have a bigger, and often older fanbase. Anime cons are attended by a lot more teenaged fans. Now that is not saying all teenagers complain about shit, but the ones that do, like most teenagers, have a strong sense of entitlement, and compound that with social media hug boxes reinforcing their "I'm so misunderstood and persecuted" thoughts, and you get kids yelling on facebook and tumblr that their super special cons are being taken over by these horrible other kinds of fans.

Narutos, Dramatical Murder, Free!, KH, and all those fat chicks demanding yaoi shit are just as annoying. It's not the content, it's kids getting pissy because it's something they specifically don't like, and they can't have anything around them that isn't catered directly to them.

>> No.8224799

>>8224792

You know, that can go both ways. You're going to a con that celebrates Japanese animation and games dressed as an American-made character and expecting people to think it's great?

That's also entitlement.

>> No.8224802

I always thought it was ok because manga is a type of comics

>> No.8224805

IMO it's because anime is a lot more niche and has less spaces/cons so for comics to take space in an anime con is like being 'invaded' by a larger genre that already has plenty of its own spaces. Anime has gotten bigger over the years, but it's still less common/accepted than American comics, in the US anyway.

>> No.8224808

>>8224799
No one is saying they have to think it's great. Look at what OP is saying. You don't have to love that they are there, but getting pissed off and thinking you are being taken over and persecuted is fucking stupid. If there is something going on at a con that is not one of your interests, then ignore that and go do something that you enjoy and don't freak out because people are wearing costumes from shit you don't like.
It does not change the convention programming, it doesn't change your costume, your interests, or your convention plans, and it doesn't impact you in any way whatsoever.

And also, Marvel and DC have both done anime and manga series that were made and distributed solely in Japan, and have done so for decades. So it is not about origin of content.

As an anime fan, I can understand them a bit. Where I live, there's only one comic con, and 3 anime cons, so comic fans attend anime cons too. But I'm not mad at those fans, I'm mad at the "ohhhh this is how I'm gonna get attention so if I cosplay Elsa at every anime con I'm gonna be popular". Also, the cosplay contests of said anime cons being full of comic/american videogames cosplayers. Yes, I know you like it, but the reason I'm attenting an anime con full of obnoxious kids is to see anime cosplays. Not to listen for the 1000th time in my life to Let it Go.

This. If you go to a convention made for people with an interest you're bound to have an easier time striking up conversations because everyone has a similar interest right?

Wrong. Anime is still a niche hobby, even in anime conventions. In daily life normalfags have the privilege of being able to talk to a random stranger about Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, etc. and reliably connect on the shallow level of enjoying the same entertainment.

I go to an anime con for the privilege of being a normalfag for a weekend only to find that a minority of con goers actually keep up with anime.

D*C has also grown exponentially over the past 5 years, so it is not taking anything away, as there are more resources to spend. If anything, you should be pissed at the Brit track for taking up shit, as that has had a much bigger impact than anime has.
And I have been going there for many years and the anime track has never once taken away from the Comic or Sci-Fi tracks. Now maybe it's taking something away from Lit, but I don't think anyone gives a fuck about that anyway.

The contest getting mobbed by western shit is the fault of the con. Instead of getting mad at fans, you should be getting mad at con leadership for not adhering to their purpose.

Our local anime con is full of western comic cartoon shit but the con gives them no panels and doesn't let them in the masq. It's a good compromise.

You forgot how a million Doctor Who and Supernatural and Sherlock are fine but Batman and Deadpool and Hellboy are not.

Though I have been seeing a ton of comic cosplay at anime cons. Now it's even more than anime cosplay I see at comic cons.

Years ago I thought it would be hilarious to do that. Thought about running around as 66 Batman or Rorschach or The Question. Now it's common as hell.

This is also why Marvel cosplayers in particular are pushing for people not to do stuff like just Stark or SHIELD agents. Because it's just not interesting at all. So people have been trying to drum up interest for stuff like X-Men, where the costumes are a bit more colourful and interesting to look at.

Especially around when AoS started, half of a Marvel groupshot would just be people in black suits.

Non-Japanese cosplay at an Anime con is somewhat out of place. Just like a Lord of the Rings cosplayer would be at a Star Wars convention. It's sort of missing the point.

Whereas something like comic con celebrates "all things" geeky and nerdy, so having a mix of things is actually preferred.

Comic fandom is a lot bigger than anime fandom in the west to begin with and that's a big part of why some anime fans get paranoid. Anime fans aren't going to take over comic cons because there simply aren't enough of us, but I've seen anime cons where homestuck or MLP had the most cosplayers.

In comparison to anime cons there's enough general western nerd/pop culture fans that their niches can be spread out into their own cons - sci-fi only, toys only, horror movies only, etc. Even series only like Harry Potter and MLP. Of course a lot of these are small and not focused on cosplay so you don't hear about them much if ever on cgl. But I think that if you combine these all there'd be more western media based conventions as a whole.

In my country the anime cosplayers are invading everything even though they already have 3+ cons of their own to go to. It's really common to see obnoxious KLK, Vocaloids, Hetaliatards and even Naruto cosplayers with shitty wigs in pictures taken at culture festivals, alt fashion shows, LARP events, Renaissance faires, etc. Imagine a gorgeous group of Orc warriors in full plate with a fat Sasuke in the background. I even saw a bunch of them at a convention for Franco-Belgian comics (i.e. not even a general comic con, mostly Tintin/Asterix and French language indie stuff). They're fucking everywhere and they shit up everything. I suppose it's to be expected since they're mostly teenagers and manchildren who don't know what is and isn't appropriate, but I still wish they'd stick to their own cons.

I find it funny that the MUH PRECIOUS ANIMU squad thinks that a bunch of cosplayers somehow means that the con is being "taken over." Literally what do you think is happening here? Roving bands of fluttershys are booting the anime cosplayers onto the streets? Concerts are changing from jpop to Harry and the Potters? Most anime cons still keep their panels strictly anime-only, and even the ones that don't usually only devote a few panels to the western stuff. How does a bunch of people dressing up as something you don't like affect you at all?

Because comic characters tend to be western superheroes, so they stick out like a sore thumb.

>> No.8231037

Honestly I've heard more people complain about anime cosplayers at comic/western media cons than the other way around.

I feel like it's own preference but I wouldn't wear anime cosplay to a comic con, to me that just feels like you've shown up in the wrong dress code. I also don't think it's appropriate to go as something super western to something very specifically about asian culture, at least try and make it fit a little. I just remember going to a con that was very much about Japanese culture and there was a group of 1950s America AU homestuckers. At least you could've gone for some sort of asian related AU if you really have to go for homestuck. For more general nerd cons though, whatever goes etc.

>> No.8231054

>>8230931
It makes it harder to find people who share your interest. The crowd gets diluted with people who aren't anime fans like you.

Also when the con starts seeing non-anime people about they start approving more non-anime panels and vendors. Eventually everything will move in from the margin into general nerd-con.

>> No.8233257

>>8231054
You're acting as if the anime fans are completely gone. You just gotta be smarter with where you look. Go hit up the artist at the AA drawing anime, or the people in the AA buying anime prints. Talk to the panalists giving anime panels or those in the audience etc.

Also keep in mind that even though someone might dress up from comics they can still like anime. Eventually the non anime fans will just stop coming as there would be nothing for them to do.

Because Anime Cons are more niche.

You dont have to prove to anyone that you know who Poison Ivy is; its so ingrained in our culture you be concidered wierd for not knowing.

On the other hand, 99% of people arent going to know who Madoka is.

Historically, people who have niche interests never like it when normalfags move into their hobby space.

Dressing up as a western character just gives off a "I don't watch anime outside of Toonami" vibe.

I'm guilty of instantly feeling superior to anyone who cosplays something that aired on US television.
